8 Ferris Wheels With Stellar Views

"When the Technological University Tower in Batumi, Georgia was completed in 2012, it was the first building ever to include a Ferris wheel built into the facade. Hanging 330 feet (100 meters) above the ground are eight airconditioned cabins with room for a total of 40 people. It would offer a great view over Batumi, if only it was operational. The ferris wheel—as well as the 280-foot (85-meter) mast with a sail on top of the tower—proved to be a challenge for the architects and engineers designing the building, and required wind tunnel tests. Further complicating the construction, the tower was built in a moderate seismic zone. During an earthquake the soil underneath the tower liquefies, and so strategies to prevent this were also developed. What’s more, the plans to open a technological university in the city fell short, and the building stood empty for two years before it was sold in 2015. The plan was to transform the tower into a hotel since many had criticized the building for not being suitable as an education facility. Still, rebuilding it would require massive investments. Still today the tower stands empty in downtown Batumi. Whether it ends up a hotel or university or something else, it will certainly have something special to offer its visitors in the future." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Close but no cigar! One of Batumi's most remarkable buildings is the tower with the small Ferris wheel. The gold-colored Ferris wheel is the creation of David Gogichaishvili, a young Georgian architect, who made his wildest fantasy come true in 2012. This skyscraper was originally supposed to house the Black Sea Technological University (what a university should do with a Ferris wheel is a mystery to me). but that plan ultimately fell through and in 2015 the tower was sold to a hotel chain and the luxurious Le Méridien Hotel is located there. However, the Ferris wheel was never put into use...

The first skyscraper with an integrated Ferris wheel has been constructed at the Technological University in Batumi. They completed the construction in 2012. Ferris wheel tested in a wind tunnel for safety Inside the Batumi tower are offices, but on the outside, at an altitude of 100 meters, the tower features a ferris wheel with eight air-conditioned cabins that can hold up to 40 people. It is the first of its kind in the world.

It is such an interesting and modern building with a ferris wheel on a high floor. It's not functional, unfortunately. Although, I'm not quite sure id dare to ride the ferris wheel if it was working. Still, it's very beautiful to look at, both during the day and night.

I drove all the way from London to Georgia on Boxing Day 2023 after hearing about this amazing ferris wheel only to be told that it was closed.
