Where to Eat the Spiciest Dishes in Houston - Eater Houston

"The biryani is the marquee offering at this Hillcroft restaurant, and without a scoop of raita with each bite, this dish is definitely spicy enough to induce sweating. Here, there are four different varieties of goat biryani alone, but go for the avakai. It’s heavily spiced on its own, then enhanced with hot and tangy mango pickle." - Alice Levitt

Google
Bawarchi Biriyanis, a well-known Indian restaurant in Houston, provides an extensive range of choices. During our visit for dining in, we relished the delectable Chicken Biriyani, Chicken starters, and a delightful dessert. Although the cost is on the higher side, the experience was definitely worth it. We look forward to returning and exploring more dishes in the future.

Google
Ordered Tandoori Roti and Dhaal for dinner. Roti not cooked properly , dough is sour taste and can’t take a bite. Moreover it tightly wrapped in foil , which resulted in moisture when unwrapped. I hate wasting food but this time I didn’t see any other option than throwing it and prepared home food . Given star rate is for dhal , at least it is good. Disappointed with overall food quality.

Google
It's a descent decor, okie tasting food place. The menu is extensive but lacks few basic dishes like Idli, There was no Dosa on the day I visited which I felt again strange too. Ordered a few appteizers and country chicken was good, Ordered a couple of biriyani's and liked a few and hated a few like the Gongura chicken Biriyani which had too much of tamarind. My verdict is It's a okie place to visit when you are hungry but you can find better food at other Bawarchi Biriyani outlets.

Google
Overall the food is good. It is famous for biryanis. I tried chicken 65 biryani, avakay chicken biryani and karampodi chicken. All re good. They are selling beers 🍻too(TajMahala and Arka). They are having some fresh juices like pineapple and watermelon. The juices are okay okay. They had a party place but it is getting transformed into Desi Pizza store which is yet to open.

Great place have your Indian food cravings 🤣. I don’t notice anything as negative feedback. Friendly people, good ambience. They got breakfast, lunch and dinner. Recommend to go on weekend to try their BIG BUFFET LUNCH $15.99 value for money will not regret 😀😀.. Huge high-five for the entire team.

Google
One of the worst foods I ever had and they call it biryani, Hyderabadi Dum Biryani. It's shameful that they make us call us in this trap. The chicken was so old and it smells so bad. Don't get deceived by the looks of the food presentation. They made it look good but taste horrible. I just threw it away after having a bite.

Went to the buffet. Food is too good. Dosa is like paper toast. And chitti punugulu with tomato and peanut chutney is next level....

Google
We have ordered chilli gobi, vijayawada chicken biryani, chicken lollipops and chettinad egg masala recently. All of these items are not tasty and not worth trying. Quality and taste of food has been degraded a lot over the years at this restaurant. They really need to take actions to avoid loosing customers.

Yelp
This review is based on a dine-in experience around 6-7 PM with my coworkers. Pros: Loved their house biryanis (boneless chicken breast with their house sauce). The rest of the party preferred Hyderabad biryani. Naan bread was just awesome. The apps were great as well, Chicken Lollipops and Guntur Chicken. Guntur Chicken was spicy but pretty tasty. Service was good -- attentive but not bothersome. Cons: Not cheap but not overpriced. I'll probably come back again with my wife and friends.

Yelp
We decided to stop by for lunch with work colleagues. The restaurant is located in a busy street with easy access and adequate parking. The external signage is clear and easily visible As we entered the restaurant, it seemed like a storage cabinet with chairs stacked up. We thought the place was closing as it seemed weird for furniture to be stacked right at the entrance. I ordered Shrimp manchurian noodles. It was very well made and the portion was appropriate. There was Bollywood songs wailing on big flat screen TVs - while nobody was watching it. Overall it's a good place to order food Togo - not for a sit in dining experience. The cooks and food are good!.

Yelp
Their website is undergoing maintenance so you cannot place an online order. They do not answer their phone so you cannot call in an order I called 10 times no answer. Horrible business

Yelp
Ordered a family pack goat biryani to go. It comes with chicken 65 and dessert. Some sort of green halva. The mutton biryani had flavor but didn't taste like it was cooked together. The appetizer was alright. Didn't taste authentic.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered family pack special Biryani.. biryani rice was old and cold. Egg was cold. Chicken was dry and not great. Doesn't live up to bawarchi name.

Yelp
Poor quality, overpriced, no flavor! Houston Bawarchi charges much more than pretty much any other Bawarchi location throughout the nation, while giving much smaller portions compared to their chain counterparts elsewhere. Houston location has taken their old lunch portion biryani and disguised it as a dinner or regular portion - and hence the moral fraud. Regular portion - barely enough for 1 person Family pack - okay for 2 people This is almost half portion compared to other Bawarchi locations. Here is just a small table showing biryani prices from different Bawarchi locations. Same is true for other dishes on the menu. Fake biryani - rice mixed with garam masala. Someone should inform the original Bawarchi how Houston location is driving its name to the mud while ripping off customers. It's clear Houston location is the most greedy location of all, while serving the most mediocre and lowest quality food. Prices in the attached image are current as of 7/15/2022.

Yelp
Wonderful food, wonderful flavors, just what I was looking for. Need I say more? They asked how hot and I descended to them what heat level I was looking for and they delivered, spot ON. DELICIOUS, simply Delicious. They had fun Indian music playing throughout my experience, not too loud. Very comfortable in here. Good experience overall. Thank you.

Yelp
I am an Uber driver. Many Uber-Eater like this restaurant. It made me feel eating here.I didn't have to drive for Uber today.I could EAT!LOL. The restaurant was very clean. It was empty on Thursday around 1pm. I ordered a thali for $9.99. I was impressed by the rice.It was big and looked like Mr.Everest. The curries were great. The servers were nice. I liked it.Please use here if you have an Uber Eat App! I would like to deliver your food! Whenever I visited here.It was hard for me to open the entrance door.Usually, I had to carry the foods to Uber-Eaters.Please fix the door! Namaste.

Yelp
I got cheese instead of chicken but the service was good. There was very quiet in the small restaurant but that can also contribute to making the space more comfy and cozy, so overall I give it 3 stars.

Yelp
Food is always amazing! They never let me down! I've taken food from there to several people and they end up ordering afterwards on their own because it is so flavorful and delicious. It does take a little longer than I would expect for a pick up order, but it is so worth the wait! They are always busy with orders for other people!

Cee Y.

Yelp
The tika masala here is delicious. They also have a weekend brunch buffet. It seems really authentic, too!
google avatar

Ramneek M.

Yelp
My go to biryani place. Spice is perfect. Get the family pack, best bang for your buck as it gives you biryani for a little over two people, an appetizer and a dessert. Unfortunately can't chose the appetizer or dessert (but haven't been disappointed as it was chili paneer and gulag jamun)
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
The food here is pretty good and I loved the garlic naan. We ordered a masala dosa which we finished as it was delicious. The mixed veg pakoras are also good. Butter chicken is worth the order. They took some time to get food out but I believe they must have been receiving lots of to go orders. If you dine in, just keep in mind that with the coronavirus situation many are ordering takeout; you might be the only one in the dining room, but the kitchen is obviously very busy. Another party came some time after us and they got their food pretty quickly. My only complaint was that they serve wine in a very small glass. Otherwise, it's pretty good food and service. If you have had Indian food before (especially home cooked by those with experience) you won't be absolutely elated, but I wouldn't say you'd be disappointed.

Yelp
Great food! I enjoyed the biryanis and mainly the chicken masala lollipops. I dined here just once early this year while visiting Houston but still remember the taste and great flavors in their dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
It was good humble place. I ordered Butter Chicken and it was great. Came with complimentary chai tea (one of my favorite drinks). The staffs were friendly. I recommend this place.

Harischandra P.

Yelp
Recently I was on A Business trip to Houston with My colleagues. We were searching for Hyderabadi Biriyani And Kebabs. We visited Houston Bawarchi for Lunch and really enjoyed the Sumptomous Hyderabadi Biryani. Avakaya Biryani was very Tasty . The Owner and Staff were Polite and Humble Would like to visit again when I am in Houston.

Yelp
Tried the weekend buffet and received 25% off!!! Not only that,, the food was just great too!!! Really enjoyed the buffet and fresh foods. Service was quick. Great to see improvements and much better customer service.

Yelp
Aug 2020 Shrimp Hakka Noodles and Schezwan Chicken Noodles are a perfect 100% Indo-Chinese dishes, like straight outta Mumbai! Lamb Samosa is great for snacking. Chicken Manchurian is tangier(tomatoey) than the classic soy sauce/ginger/garlic base. Kaarampodi Kodi is a South Indian chicken appetizer with curry leaf tadka.

Yelp
I ordered chicken tikka masala with garlic naan and oh my freakin' goodness was I impressed! Great portion, great flavor, and came with white rice. What I thought would be enough for leftovers was DEVOURED! :) Definitely, portion size is good enough for a normal person to have leftovers, I was just starving! I can tell this place is going on my list of go-to spots for the best food!

Katy N.

Yelp
I recently tried their buffet (available Fri - Sun, $12.99/person). Good value and wait staff were helpful. There are some tasty vegetarian options - it would have been helpful if the veg items were clearly indicated. Note: If you request for water, you may be given bottled, which was an unexpected $1+ charge. There is chai included with the buffet.

Cristal M.

Yelp
The service is horrible nobody acknowledges you and there doing nothing just on there phone while people wait

Katie G.

Yelp
Ok. This place is BEYOND awkward. I walked in there and was greeted with a guy holding a baby asking me 'yea?' I was a party of one looking for good butter chicken. He gestured to the empty dinning room. The wine they first gave me was bad and I had to tell the server. He opened a new bottle and that was appreciated. However, the service was so weird. Someone was sweeping and mopping during lunch hours. I saw more people taking out meals than eating in and I understand why. They don't want to eat in that environment. When it was time to get my check I had to get up and ask them the total. It's was 21. Something lol. I gave them 2 $20s He asked me if I wanted change, and I said YES. He asked me if I had $4 and I gave it to him, they gave me the $20 back but didn't give me the chance to make my own tip. I would have tipped LESS due to the odd service. I don't know what's going on in this place but they SUCK at customer service and act like you owe them something for eating there. I regret spending my money here. The food was NOT worth the weird environment. It's not even good. Trust me,you DONT want to stop here for good Indian food. Look down the street. If I could give 0 stars I would. Very bad food.

Yelp
I freaking LOVE Bawarchi Biryani. It's one of my go to spots in Houston for awesome desi food. From their Biryanis to their chicken curries, their food is simply amazing! Their servings are generous, they don't skimp on food and their service is really good. I've dined in there about twice now and literally the manager came to serve the food. I think his name was Amit. Bawarchi biryani is definitely food that is very close to authentic Indian food. Most of the people talking shit on Yelp obviously don't know what Indian food is supposed to taste like which is why they don't have good reviews. As someone who's lived in India for 13 years, knows how to cook Indian food, I can whole heartedly support their kitchen. Y'all need to try Bawarchi. For real.
google avatar

Kuleen L.

Yelp
Wasn't to impressed with the chicken tikka masala today. That's about it. For some reason it didn't taste the same as before.
google avatar

Meenakshi R.

Yelp
I always like Bawarchi. But I don't prefer biryani here, I use to order from biryani pot and fish & kothu parotta from Bawarchi. Today I happen to order Hyderabad chicken biryani to use the coupon online, I was quite surprise to taste the biryani and it was totally yum. I personally loved it than the biryani pot now. I think they changed the chef. Whatever, I totally recommend this biryani as it is full of masala and spice. For spice lovers, plz go for it rather than blunt biryani. I finished my biryani than I realize I missed taking the photo. Whenever I have fish craving, I only visit Bawarchi and order for tawa fish - so beautifully they fry it and u love the masala unlike any other restaurant they do not use bread flour for coating which is too good to taste.

Yelp
We ordered the food to be delivered as stated within 30 minutes. It took an hour and 10 minutes. We called prior to ordering and asked if the mixed kabob order came with rice they stated it does....it doesn't. Or it didn't. The food quality was bad. The garlic bird was stale and my order was supposed to have 2 lamb chops it came with one lamp chop and one bone with no meat on it. Overall this was the worst order ever. The only thing that was worth it was the vegetable Samboosa. That's it.

Cruz C.

Yelp
Food coloring in palak paneer! Shameful! Overpriced food and small portions to go! First and last time ordering from here!
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and it has always been very good. I love Indian food. Biryani Pot on Westheimer used to be my favorite, but the quality of the food bas gone down hill for me. Now, this place is my new favorite Indian resturant. In the past, I've had the thali and Sunday buffet for lunch. Each visit was extremely delicious. Also, the place was very clean and the service was great. My husband also goes here for lunch, and we've never had any issues. I guess other reviewers were unfortunate.
google avatar

Thejaswi R.

Yelp
We went in for a Sunday buffet and were hugely disappointed. The whole place smelled of food, not very hygienic and not at all tasty food. Curries were cold Chicken biryani had no chicken Rice was dry No waiters Food had no taste I would totally skip this place if I wanted Indian buffet next time.
google avatar

Ashwani C.

Yelp
They need to stop using frozen meat gone bad. The chicken has the distinct flavor of old frozen meat. They have a variety of flavors in their dishes but its all ruined with the quality of meat. For vegetarian dishes its a good choice.
google avatar

Romeo M.

Yelp
Great service. Clean place. Great food. I don't usually like Indian food but that changed with this place. Big portion. Fresh ingredients. Friendly people and like the ambiance. Would return in near future.
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed a quick weekday lunch here with a friend of mine. The dosa is huge! Comes out crispy, hot, and delicious and you can order it with your choice of curry. We also enjoyed our chicken biryani. Reasonable prices ($10.50 each dish). The interior has a lot of space and is pretty clean, would be great both for groups or just you and a friend. The service was good, but we were the only customers at the time so can't say much for when the place is busy. Only issue we had was the huge waft of incense? sandalwood? right when coming in the door. And the inside smells like cleaning supplies. A little confusing for my stomach to process while eating tasty food but otherwise no complaints! Would love to come back and try more dishes. Tips: Get 5% off if you pay cash only and 10% for students! Can only use one of the discounts though!

Yelp
I am updating my review to 1 star. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY HAVE NERVES TO MAKE MY DAL MAKHANI SO COLD, ITS LIKE SAYING FUCK YOU CUSTOMER I DONT CARE about serving you a warm Dal . Indian restaurants in America are falling apart and they are taking out their faliures on customers like I and other Indian food lovers. Folks this has to stop, it will take voices of paying customers like me and y'all to end this cruelty. Stay away from : BAWARCHI BIRYANI, BIRYANI POT, HYDERABADI BIRYANI and more to come ... Please read my reviews on these Restaurants above. I am working on making YouTube channel where I am going to expose their name worldwide !!!!!!! Join me and please do not give your HARD EARN MONEY TO ANY RESTAURANTS WHO ARE UNWILLING TO PROVIDE BETTER QUALITY FOOD AND SERVICE !

Yelp
I came to this restaurant and was very disappointed with the service. The waiter brought out one dish and we waited five minutes before he brought out the second. We waited a long time before someone came out to ask if we need water or anything to drink. I also felt like there was a language barrier as no one spoke clearly. It was not a good experience.
google avatar

Maya M.

Yelp
Spicy food! Real spicy food. Ordered their chicken tikka dosa, chilli chicken and garlic naan! I regret not ordering a sweet to cut down the spice!!! Try this place if you want real spicy food and if you can handle heat.
google avatar

Alexandra T.

Yelp
It was good and the price isn't bad. Taste was good they gave me weird pieces of chicken that barely had meat on it and that's why I am giving 4/5. Samosa was very tasty but honestly some were fried better than the others. Overall good. Haven't tried their buffet but so far their menu is good.

Karthik R.

Yelp
We have been at this place along with my family for long weekend . Food quality & service not appreciative , took 45 minutes for refill the food. # Worst experience.
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
I think this place is new or I just never really noticed because it is in a weird location. This is one of the better Indian cuisine places but it is also not one of the cheaper ones. The staff is pretty welcoming considering they are quite young. They did come by multiple times to make sure that we were good throughout our meal. They have an expansive menu and I always tend to get Briyani, Naan, and some veggie plate. This time we ordered all of the above mentioned and also a fish plate. I cant recall the name but once you smother fish with indian stew and spices, you simply cant go wrong. Its about time Houston focus on other Indian restaurants other than Himmalayas. Places like Bawarchi Biryani totally surpass this place. I truly enjoyed this dining experience. However, they still did not surpass my favorite indian place therefore a 4 star is given.

Yelp
I went for a working lunch and I appreciated the very fast service. I noted that the supervisor directed the waiters to immediately greet customers at the tables. The decor is artistic and clean, but not too fancy. I had the vegetarian thali. I really don't know if it is all-you-can-eat like it is in some thali restaurants. But, there was a perfect balance all the 6 different flavors of sweet, salt, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy on one single plate. I don't usually eat dessert, but the fruit dish was really delicious. For under $10 it is quite a deal.

Mack H.

Yelp
They have the best special chicken biryani in the city of Houston! There's never a long wait and you won't be disappointed in the food.

Topacio A.

Yelp
I just placed an order on line, paid and head over to pick up my food. Once at the restaurant, the woman dispatching orders did no care to review my order, she was busy on the phone. I didn't get 2 sauces that normally come with the samosas, the prices are considerably higher now, I ordered 2 mango lassis and they did not have that, but instead the woman offered to replace it with 2 desserts since the order was already paid online. The desserts were okay but not what I wanted. The portions are very small for the price. I will never come back to this place and do not recommend it to anyone.
google avatar

Nate Z.

Yelp
Fantastic food and friendly, attentive staff! Highly recommended! The Kheema Biryani was great and so was everything else!
google avatar

Salil O.

Yelp
Definitely thought it was good Indian food. The modern take on it makes the atmosphere very clean and vibrant. The ordering process can be a little confusing but once you understand how to start off, you really can't go wrong with any of them. Hope to be back soon at some point.
google avatar

Yelp
Sometimes, if I'm really craving some good Indian food, I'll venture all the way out to Hillcroft. So, one day I took my short lunch break to drive all the way across town to try this place out, but alas, it was all done in vain. I'm giving this place a solid 2.5 stars because I've experienced better but it was okay. Let me start off by saying I probably played it way too safe and I ordered the chicken tikka masala when I should've gotten a Biryani. And for that, I might give this place another go in the future. Also, I'm a wimp when it comes to spicy foods and so I ordered this without any spiciness and apparently India food is best enjoy when your mouth is on fire. The flavor was meh (as the 2 stars would imply), but the portion was huge and the rice was good. I had a lot of left overs, making the cheap price worth the trip alone. Overall, there's definitely better Indian food on Hillcroft, so maybe get the Biryani??
google avatar

Rishab S.

Yelp
There have a new team of servers and that too not enough of them. I was there last night with friends and our order wasn't completely delivered and the ones which were delivered wasn't served in the correct order and food quality wasn't as it should be. Imagine they serve you your food (just the naan)without bringing in plates. Then they bring you plates without the vegetables ordered and all of this after you waited 50mins for your food to arrive. The manager apologized and acknowledged but the food quality and service provided was enough to ruin our dinner. Try other restaurants which offer better food and service across SW Fwy.
google avatar

Sreyashree B.

Yelp
Recently I had picked up egg biryani and keema biryani from bawarchi. I am a huge fan of their food but this time around I was gravely disappointed. The biryani was very dry and extremely dull. It was difficult to find any flavor without adding loads of salan. I don't know what happened that their quality went so bad. So I don't think I'm coming back for their biryani.
google avatar

Yelp
Great quality and good taste always! Biryani abd vegetable chettinad curry was delicious!

Yelp
Recommended to me by a friend. This place has some of the best Indian food that I've had in a long time. You know you're at an authentic Indian restaurant when the patrons are almost all Indian. There's a massive war and peace style menu which can be a bit intimidating, but they have a bit of everything from northern curries to dosas in the south. We ordered the fried cauliflower appetizer, which could have converted me to vegetarianism if I could have it everyday. If you've only had chicken tikka from a buffet, you're missing out. The chicken was super juicy and the spice mixture was perfect. The best thing by far was the dum biryani though. So many different layers and textures all cooked in one magnificent biryani. There's so many restaurants in Hillcroft, but if you're around, definitely give Bawarchi a try.
