Remote Hotels That Reward a Long Journey

"We know that New Zealand is home to almost 5 million people, and that many of them live within hours of Bay of Many Coves. But for the other 7,595,000,000 of us, it’s a bit of a trek, so it’s fitting they’d have a hotel on this list. Especially this particular hotel, which requires a few final exciting steps to reach its scenic, serene expanse — there are no roads in, so your arrival comes via helicopter, seaplane or ferry." - The MICHELIN Guide

Truly an amazing experience from start to finish. Helen and Thompson ( chef) were amazing and made our short stay a memorable experience. Our 5 course dinner was like a 3 star Michelin experience. The location is only accessible via helicopter or ferry.. The ferry is a short ride over from Picton and is a beautiful trip. The room was absolutely gorgeous, the views and sounds were spectacular. One of the best places we have stayed at. I would highly recommend.

An absolute gem of a place to stay, relax and indulge! We stayed here for 4 nights on our travels through New Zealand and it exceeded expectations from the room (comfy and well appointed), location and ambiance, food and service. Helen and her full team provided us with an amazing few days and a morning dolphin treat that was much appreciated!! The staff were exceptional and the hike to the look out well worth it. Thanks so much!!

We stayed for two nights in our tour of New Zealand. This was our rest and relaxation in our tour and the resort didn’t disappoint.|The trip from Picton through the sound is amazing and the view from and resort setting is stunning.|The little cabins are very well designed with all the facilities you need and you can sit on the balcony and soak up the view.|The small number of cabins makes for a personal service and experience. We didn’t do too much in our stay apart from relax, but did walk up behind the resort - very hilly and found the glow worms at night.|Only mild criticism was the evening meal - tried to be very up market menu which didn’t really work with the inexperienced serving staff - would have preferred a more basic menu.|Would thoroughly recommend the resort.

This was the first time we'd returned to BoMC since we got married here ten years ago. I have no idea why we waited so long, and I'm sure we will not make that mistake again. It is a beautiful setting (and we were lucky to have some unseasonably fine weather) away from the world. We enjoyed the walks to the waterfall and the lookout ... constantly followed/pestered by flirting fantails. The only real sound was bell birds, Tui, and possibly a ruru/morepork. It makes it so relaxing. The staff/service was uniformly excellent (but big shout out to Amy & Nina (& I hope I got the names correct)), and the food was better than we remember. Overall, we loved our stay and which it had been longer.

We stayed at this beautiful location with a fantastic view from our apartment. We arrived here by water taxi and sailed for about an hour from Picton. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member, shown around, and given our apartment. We thought the apartment was nicely decorated, but the entire resort is starting to need maintenance. It’s in no way a 5-star experience. The food at their evening restaurant was nothing special – definitely not close to 5 stars. The food was very average and really expensive for the quality. The pictures on social media are highly misleading and don’t reflect what we experienced. It’s not something we would recommend to others. The waiters also didn’t seem to be properly trained, more like young people working to fund their travels in New Zealand. While that’s fine, it’s just not what you’d expect from a restaurant that describes itself as 5-star. So, the food didn’t meet our expectations. The breakfast buffet was never replenished and often had nearly empty trays. You’d have to be there early to have more options. However, the egg dishes that were ordered were good. The coffee was definitely a highlight of the breakfast. In-room dining was very limited and didn’t meet the expected standard for what this resort is trying to present itself as. Actually, we would suggest that guests buy groceries before arriving for a light lunch, as there are utensils and plates in the apartment. We didn’t know this until we had already sailed there and had no alternatives. Our overall feeling after staying at the resort for 3 nights is that they lack quality given their excessively high prices. On our trip to New Zealand, we’ve experienced much higher quality for significantly less money than what we got at this resort.

I was beginning to regret booking a couple of nights here as it felt such a hassle having to catch the ferry and we were loving our stay at our hotel in the Marlborough region and desperately wanted to stay longer. Reluctantly we drove to Picton, unloaded our car and under overcast skies walked to the ferry terminal.|The ferry left right on time and as we commenced our journey the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. The views along the Queen Charlotte Sound were amazing and we arrived at the Bay of Many Coves in glorious sunshine.|The view from our apartment was spectacular and made us so very glad that we had chosen to stay here.|The whole stay was incredibly relaxing and listening to the birds and the sounds over the water was wonderful.|All the staff were young and friendly, which gave off a very relaxed vibe.|Food in the restaurant was very good but on the second night we wanted something light having eaten lunch rather late in the day, and so we ordered a charcuterie board and a bottle of wine and sat on our balcony watching the sun go down.|Breakfast was very good , a lovely selection of fresh food buffet style but also a menu to order a variety of dishes.|Home made cake was on offer during the afternoon, along with coffee and tea.|Although activities were available, we just enjoyed a couple of days of pure relaxation.

Fabulous accommodations in absolutely beautiful setting! Employees were all extremely helpful and focused on us having a great time. Food was very good. It is remote and requires a water taxi to reach but once you get there you don’t want to leave!
