"Born in a refugee camp in Thailand after her parents fled the Cambodian genocide, Nite Yun and her family moved to Stockton, California when she was two, and it was there that she grew up pounding lemongrass in the kitchen with her mom. “My parents didn’t talk much about Cambodia or the Khmer Rouge—those memories are too painful,” she says. “But when they do mention it, they talk about the golden era, the ’60s and early ’70s. It was a carefree time where there was music and life around them and art was celebrated.” It was this spirit that Yun found when she visited Cambodia the first time. “I wanted to bring that back, to have my parent’s generation and the younger generations celebrate this time, and hopefully heal as well.” So she quit her job as a nurse and started hosting dinners at her house, cooking the dishes she grew up eating, like rice noodle soup and prahok ktiss, a pork belly dip with fermented fish paste. “When I heard about La Cocina, I had no knowledge of operating a business, so I thought I’d never get in,” she says. But the organization saw her potential and kept reaching out until she agreed to cater a board meeting—which turned out to be an informal interview. She was accepted. “It was the abundance of resources I found at La Cocina that allowed me to openNyum Bai,” says Yun. “I’m still learning, but having a good team really helps.”" - ByHilary Cadigan

Have been going here since I was a kid. A big part of my childhood. Didn’t really change much but the food always has been the same. It’s so good, the pho is phenomenal and number 58 with the pork and the fried rice just hits.

Google
We came here to eat before our trip to Cambodia to get a feel for Cambodian food. This is locally owned and the owners are such a kind and very friendly couple. The prices were affordable and their food was extremely delicious. We are definitely returning back here to dine again.

Google
Ordered takeout on Sunday 7/7/24, fried rice, with the crispy chicken and shrimp rolls. Not sure if maybe Sunday being the end of the week and the food is getting old or whoever’s cooking was just having a bad day? Even the spring rolls were terrible. The wrap was thin and split all over. The fried rice was dry and not tasty as usual. The chicken also was not tasting right. Not going back for a while. Maybe try earlier in the week next time.

Google
Atmosphere is a little on the dingy side but the food is so good. Our favorite is the oh so good #59. Bbq pork, fried rice, over easy egg and shrimp. Large portions and realistic prices. 2 people can eat for around $25, which is tough to stay under these days.

Google
Ordered $27 worth of food because usually portion are small for me, but this time I got more than I bargained for, I could feed a family of 20. Food is great, portions are plenty, taste like home food fry rice.

Michelle Weiler

Google
The food was good but the table was dirty and the floors were sticky (and it's carpet). The lady who took our order wiped down the table when we asked and was friendly enough. It took forever to get our bill so we walked up to the register and rang the bell. It still took a few minutes before someone came out to ring us up. If it wasn't for the cleanliness factor and the wait for the bill, I'd be inclined to give a 4 or 5 star rating.

Google
The first 2 times I ordered beef pho from here was good. But the 3rd time the pho tasted way off. Like straight up artificial pho broth powder mixed in hot water. Even the color of the broth looked different. It was so salty. And the beef balls had a funky taste to it.

Dry Rain

Google
Noodle soups are NOT PHO flavored. We ordered the house special beef noodle and the chicken noodle, broth tasted the same. Broth is not bad per se, its sweet. If you come here you best order their vermecilli and plates because thats what they are good at. Very generous portions too.

Sandra K.

Yelp
Authentic Khmer food presented in a clean and modern manner. Very happy this place exists as I'm Khmer and had more restaurant options out in the west coast. Not only is the food made by Cambodian cooks, the flavor profiles are very accurate and delicious! Anything with the curry sauce will be amazing. The owner is also VERY sweet, she always checks up on each table and is there to make sure each guest is treated well. Prices are mid-range, but it's easy to spend quite a bit if you want to try new things (like I did with the lamb dumplings and frog legs). $$ is well worth spent tho and I'm happy to make a trip out here every time :)

Marianna A.

Yelp
Not sure why this restaurant only has 3.6 stars. This restaurant was such a great hole in the wall spot! My mom is Cambodian and I thought the flavors were so authentic and tasty, the cooks were Cambodian too, and the prices were very reasonable. My spicy shrimp curry was so aromatic and packed with flavor and spice. My friends ordered Vietnamese iced coffee, beef sticks, and spicy basil chicken, and they all loved their meals.

Alexandra B.

Yelp
This restaurant is located very close to I five in Stockton. We had a very tasty pho soup, It came with a small container of spicy peppers that made the broth deliciously spicy! The prices were reasonable and there was plenty of parking outside of the restaurant. They accept credit cards and you can get your food to go or eat inside the restaurant.

Denny N.

Yelp
This place was pretty good and nice portions but the food I just posted wasn't what I originally was going after. What I wanted they said they didn't have which I was a bit disappointed since if they don't make it anymore then why still have it on the menu. Also the food that I did want was called Mi Quang or yellow noodle soup with crispy rice and some egg soup. Overall the food that I did get was very tasty and was a bigger portion than I was expecting which I was happy with that. Lots of pork in it which was nice.

Eric S.

Yelp
The best pho and rice plates in the valley! Can't wait to return to Bayon and destroy a number 58.

Zin M.

Yelp
Went w family and family friends. Affordable food. Quality was ok. They made a mistake on an order but I think they gave us a discount to make up for it. Husband was really into bird's nest crunchy noodles at a Chinese restaurant so we tried it here and no... not good. Just wasn't what we were looking for. Service wasn't bad. Overall... we wouldn't come back

Sothy K.

Yelp
Pho is alright, sometimes it's too cinnamon'y or sometimes it would be too sweet, it's very inconsistent. For the seafood pho dish, it does not have a lot of variety, seafood meat wise. Other than all of that the rice plates are delicious. Be careful with their hot oil, it's straight up peppers only.

Joshua L.

Yelp
This place has amazing food, and it's so affordable! I paid $14 for enough food for two people to get stuffed. We bought their spring rolls, which came as an order of four and they were each large enough to fill the to-go box from end to end. The peanut sauce that came with it was so good, and just thick enough to stick to the rolls. The chicken noodle soup was delicious, and the small was big enough for two people to share. The broth was already tasty but then when you add the limes, basil, cilantro and their spicy sauce it was incredible! The spicy sauce was exactly that, but it wasn't too much, and it seemed to be a great mix of hoisin, chili oil, sriracha, and fresh cut green peppers. The sweetness of the hoisin really helps cut the spice. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Tania A.

Yelp
I have tried about 8 places for chicken pho here in Stockton, Ca. My partner and I were looking for a new place to try and Bayon Restaurant came up, needless to say it the best pho I have tried so far. #hidden gem. Definitely recommend trying.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Tucked away hidden gem of Stockton! With the way inflation is going its nice to find a affordable meal that's not cutting corners. For the price the portions are massive and the food is delicious. I usually order the #3 pork egg rolls and #59 pork, shrimp, and fried rice and out the door the price 17 flat (be sure to call the order in don't use grubhub or the website , you'll save a few bucks).

Amber M.

Yelp
Nice portions, friendly staff, and delicious food. We come here every time we're in town.

Maxwell F.

Yelp
Bayon is probably my favorite restaurant in Stockton. It's consistently delicious every time I eat there, the portion sizes are great, and honestly I would pay more than they ask for the meal they give me. The staff are very friendly and the service is very quick. If you're thinking about not eating here just sit down and order something, you'll be amazed. The #24 is my go-to, I order it every time and it's always the best think I've ever had.

Raymond W.

Yelp
My wife and I have been coming here for a few years after going shopping at Marshall's across the way. We came back post pandemic and were pleasantly surprised that the food was as delicious as ever Our go to item #35 is grilled pork vermicelli w shrimp egg roll. It is really good and huge portion. The pork was tasty and grilled in marinade that is pretty mouth watering. Great price too. g

Bruce T.

Yelp
I was shopping across and decided to get some food to go and for $8.50 this plate was packed with enough food for now and later. Very underrated and hidden restaurant.

Mark A.

Yelp
When We Meal Was Opened Upon Arrival at Home, a Closer inspection of the Shrimp in the shrimp fried Rice , We Found That The Shit Vein Was Not Properly Removed/Cleaned !!! Yea Gross !! Sick and Disgusting all Roll into One . Miss this Miss , Opt out for a Cold Coffee ( from the gas station)

Joseph J.

Yelp
First time here and I order vermicelli and dry noddles with soup on the side was bad I would probably come back, this seems like a hole in the wall but this is some home authentic food cooking

Solina C.

Yelp
The best pan fried egg noodles I've ever had in life! Not the best location n very hidden but no wonder it's a hidden gem!

Jessica T.

Yelp
Literally one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I've had in Stockton... I can't believe I didn't find this sooner. I originally thought it was just Cambodian food but there were a lot of Vietnamese dishes as well and coming from SoCal, this restaurant was closest to home in authentic Viet food. I got theirs spring rolls which I definitely recommend - the rice paper they use is softer and more authentic and even though they didn't use mint leaves, it still tasted just as good. The fish sauce was the best I've had in Stockton so far (I've only been to a few Vietnamese restaurants here), but I think you can tell a restaurant's authenticity through their fish sauce. Their pork chops were soft and tasty. AND THEIR THAI ICED TEA. BOMB. Usually they're so sweet, but this place makes it just enough sweetness to mix in with the tea. Definitely coming here as my to go Vietnamese food.

Clairee G.

Yelp
Their price points are niceeee & their kathew is everything . Their downfall is that they're almost always out of half of their menu items. It gets frustrating when I want to explore into a different of dish & it ends up being unavailable.

Judy N.

Yelp
This restaurant is located in a hidden plaza but I'm glad I found it. I Love their bbq pork, it always taste the same!

D L.

Yelp
This is my second time at this little hole in the wall restaurant and I have to say, both times has been delicious! The owners are nice and the both times I've ordered to go, it comes out super fast. I ordered the grilled chicken over rice w/mini prawns served with fish sauce on the side. A pretty good portion of food that was only $7.50! Such a good deal! A good go to spot if you're looking for something fast.

C U.

Yelp
Walked in and was pleasantly surprised. Price is right and so many tasty options to choose from. We enjoyed the deep fried prawns with pork. Never had this before. Was so yummy that we ate them all. We could barely finish when our meal came. Will definitely come back to try something else new here. I had no idea this spot has been here 15 years. What a hidden gem of a treat!

Kenny L.

Yelp
Great meal at a really good price, I don't know exactly I ordered, but it was #36 on the menu. Grilled pork, egg roll, noodles, and a good amount of veggies yum! All of this was only 7 bucks pre tip. However the best parts ended at the food. Now maybe I had set my expectations too high for here regarding service. I was slowly seated at my table, waited longer than I would thought I would have in a mostly empty restaurant. Again, after I finished my meal, I was waited a couple of minutes before just going up to pay for my bill. Service was mediocre and kind of left a bad opinion of this place. My final thoughts giving this place a 3 out of 5

Emily T.

Yelp
Did you know they give you $1 off if you're a student? Amazing since a bowl of pho would be less than $5! Great deal, good pho, fast service.

Anysia H.

Yelp
The Pho here was the worst Ive ever had. This review is for food quality not service. The broth tasted odd with a strong aroma of cinnamon sticks and other spices that was sweetened down. Service was ok. Not the greatest.

Eric S.

Yelp
If I was stuck on an island and only had 5 different meals available to me for the rest of time, a bowl of pho and a number 58 rice plate would be 2 of those 5 meals. This place is next level and will hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life.

Mike S.

Yelp
The food is descent and affordable. The marinade grill pork is always tasty. Goes well with the chilli paste.

Perry S.

Yelp
Don't come here unless you're willing to wait an hour for your food to arrive ps I ordered a noodle salad!! (Not many customers) poor service! Place was unclean, not sanitary at all, tables were filthy. chairs were old/dingy. The food was ok. The long wait made me a very unsatisfied customer! . Would not recommend.

Em T.

Yelp
When you enter a restaurant, and see half of the tables still not cleaned, it should be a good sign for you to leave. But we were desperate for a good bowl of noodle soup, so we sat down. BIG MISTAKE. We found someone, who happens to be a cashier, the waiter, and also the cook!!! She took our order and apologized for the wait because one the workers there had an appointment and hadn't shown up. Again, we were desperate, so we waited. 25 minutes later, I start to get annoyed - no water, and no sign of food showing up. I almost went to the kitchen to asked if we could cancel the order. The lady (the cook, the waiter, and the cashier) came out and said our food would be ready in minutes. And so we waited. Finally our food came... By golly, I can deal with the non-existent service, but when it comes to food that I have to pay for, please at least make it decent. We (4 of us) each ordered soup noodles and they all came out salty as heck. Not only so, the noodles were not fully cooked. 1) I am not a picky eater. 2) I hate to waste food. 3) I was hungry at that point I'll eat anything. All of the above couldn't get me to finish that bowl of noodles. Sadly, I had to let it go to waste. I only took 3 sips, and it was 3 sips too much. I even told my boys stop eating it because the sodium in that bowl was enough to kill them!! I just can't imagine a place like this can sustain any businesses. Aside from the service, the food that they serve was just totally unacceptable. If it was just one bowl, then it's bad luck, but if it's 4 bowls, then it's just bad food. For sure, we won't be coming back here again (even if I'm getting paid to come), and advise those skip it if you can. After paying for the terrible meal, we ended up at Jack-in-the-box.

Deondra S.

Yelp
Great food love the tofu pho an vegetable fried rice! The egg rolls were also amazing

Vincent D.

Yelp
Bayon Restuurant on Grand Canal Blvd in Stockton, California. Yelp Challenge 29/100 I came here recently with my youngest Hime-Chan to bring her to try out Bayon for her first time. She's slowly coming along in liking South East Asian food. I wanted her to try something different besides her favorites meat on a stick, sticky rice and sweet sausage. I always try something out first before I knock it. So showing my three children different types of food from different cultures, is what I like to do. Note: They do take credit. Tip: They do have a restroom. MLB tip: They have WiFi, just ask for the password. Daddy loves his daughters tip: Hime is Japanese for Princess. We arrived it was pretty slow and we got to pick anywhere we wanted. My daughter found us a table and note: we're very territorial when it comes to seating. When the kids pick a table, that's our table every time we dine in. We looked over the menu, quickly she saw they have milkshakes. So she my Hime ordered one and I just had water with lime. Pro tip: Water is available upon request. The waitress came back with my water and milkshake and we put in our orders. My Hime picked out the closest thing to meat on a stick with rice, it also comes with a chicken broth soup. I chose tofu pho. My Hime was loving the shredded pieces of meat. She ended getting full from her meal and didn't finish her milkshake and she ended up taking it with us. This was the first I had Tofu Pho before, I wanted to try something different. If you like tofu then this is for you. They give a generous, I mean generous amount of tofu chunks. I'm not the biggest tofu fan, but I loved the tofu pho. Service was on point this evening and everything was perfect. From my glass of water to our spoons, it was top notch. My Hime and I had a wonderful time here at Bayon. That's the only thing that matters to us. Doing what this Daddy does best, spending time with my children. My three children are my world and everything else in life is a bonus. Sincerely Vincent D aka VD aka Vebola aka Vincent Vega. Always, Enjoying the simple things in life.

Dick R.

Yelp
Dont judge the book by its cover, ambiance is not that great, food is good, simple with decent price. 3 person cost me $23.00 with tax, cheaper than buying @ a fast food restaurant will come again..if son is happy then im happy

Dale N.

Yelp
I had this place bookmarked for a long time but never tried it. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers for their yummy suggestions. This place is hidden. It is downstairs in front of Marshall's. You can park upstairs and then walk east to the stairs. I ordered the #35 today which several Yelpers had suggested. Consisted of vermicelli noodles, barbecued pork and veggies. I poured the vinegary sauce (good stuff) over the mixture and added a few squirts of plum sauce. I was in heaven! Also comes with three shrimp rolls. All of that for around seven dollars. This is the real deal. I think mama does the cooking...tastes homemade It was so yummy, I might go back tonight for seconds. lol If you're into this type of food at all or want to try something different, I highly recommend this place.

Jerline H.

Yelp
I should probably have a disclaimer saying I only order pho noodles with soup (that's it). There is your disclaimer. It is $3! At other restaurants I get charged all over the place for my pho noodles + soup, but if you're just trying to get some delicious Asian carbs for cheap I recommend Bayon. Their soup base is pretty solid and they have all the right chili spices. I don't think very many people know about this place because it is hidden behind Ross, down the hill from Lollicup.. This place is more of a word-of-mouth kind of a restaurant, but I think that's also pretty cool. Only real Stocktonians know of this place!

AJ B.

Yelp
Just recently I took my brother out for dinner. We arrived, got a table, and ordered. Usually water is already served along with the mint leaves, bean sprouts, and lime but we got none of that. By the time we got our food we still haven't gotten any water. My brother got up and had to request it himself. After the terrible meal that left our stomachs aching we tried to wash it off with Lollicup. It's been a long time I haven't been here (since I was 18? Now that I'm 25) but it is upsetting to visit a pho spot my family and I would go to all the time after church growing up. We always got Mama's Pho and Saigon Bay as another option. At least we'll get water and the other shit need for our pho

Stacey P.

Yelp
OMG. Great place for vermicelli!! So light yet so filling.... and I always get another meal out of it. Anything with the pork is a good choice :) They're only $6.50 a bowl and $1 off for students! If you're looking for a place to beat the crowd, come here. Whenever I go, it's pretty empty and you can always call your order in so your food can just be waiting for you when you enter. Also got complimentary egg drop soup today! What's not to love?

Tg N.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Had ordered a bun bo hue and this is what I was served with. It's as disgusting as it looks. Took a sip and I was pretty much done. Oh and I had ordered a side of egg rolls, and that too was yuck.

Carolina L.

Yelp
This is probably one of the WORST PLACES I have eaten in my LIFE, not only they gave me the wrong order but also the food WAS FLAVORLESS! the rice was old. Only $21 for 2 people. Cheap but not worth it at all.

Skott H.

Yelp
(+4) Pros - Very reasonably priced!! - Food comes out very quickly - Perfect for to-go orders if you need to study/work - UOP discount with student ID - Always friendly staff - I've never had to wait to be seated - Great Vermicelli dishes & Rice dishes - Did I mention it's very reasonably priced? (+0) Cons - Pho is not the best in Stockton & broth could be hotter Bottom Line: I've been going here about once a month and what make this place perfect for me is that I can get in and get out quickly while still getting my fix without breaking the bank. I would recommend this place to a friend - thanks Bayon!

Abner A.

Yelp
People may complain about the availability and it is true that they tend to be out of a lot of food, but that is because they make everything fresh and they buy ingredients that day. I know it may be frustrating, but I would prefer having fresh ingredients than a whole menu with days old ingredients

Donna F.

Yelp
Had lunch here on a recommendation from a friend. It's a hole in the wall place, tucked in a strip mall and the entrance is right across from Marshall's. My coworker and I noticed the prices of their items were way cheaper than what we're used to living in the Bay Area. I ordered a rice plate with 1/4 chicken and my coworker had a noodle bowl (can't recall exactly what it was). We also shared an order of spring rolls. My eyes were bigger than my stomach as I could not finish what I ordered...their portions were huge!! If I'm in the area again, and craving Vietnamese food, this would definitely be a place I would come back to.

Donovan T.

Yelp
I love the food here. It's not the best in the world, but it totally reminds me of my mom's cooking. So when I'm feeling like I need some love, I would eat here. Everytime I'm in Stockton, this is always the last stop before I hit the road and leave town. Bayon is a small family owned business that offers a mix of Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisine. In my opinion, it leans more towards the Vietnamese side, but they offer a good amount of dishes from both cultures. Portions are pretty big, and is extremely cheap. The most expensive dishes are around $7.50, with most rice plates costing about $6 and some change. Pho is $5.50 for a large bowl, and only $5 for a small. Service is good, they don't come out and talk to you alot of anything, but there was also hot tea when I need it. My only complaints are that the food is somewhat oily. I'm pretty sure they use MSG as well (but then again, what Asian place doesn't !?) because I always get super thirsty after I eat here. Bayon is a solid restaurant for some cheap and good homestyle Vietnamese/Cambodian food.

Alex L.

Yelp
I heard of Black Irish, French Canadian, Chinese/Japanese/dirty knees.....but what is Vietnamese/Cambodian? To me, Bayon sounds totally Filipino--like Balikbayan. You know....the boxes you see at the airports that's overstuffed with shit like vitamins, gummy bears, nuts, toys, and other crap that's sent to relatives in the Phillipines. It's what you say when it's late on a Sunday night and your choices for grub is limited. We were kinda in the mood for some soup, but not in Pho form. I decided to order the spicy soup, and decided to pick up some fried rice, and a grilled BBQ chicken and shrimp rice plate as well and have it to go. By the time we got home, the soup was still amazingly hot, but I decided to nuke it a min anyways so the raw ingredients would cook well. There's just something about raw meat wrapped in a plastic bag that gives me an uneasy feeling about salmonella. I scarfed all the noodles down in like 4 min and then realized the food wasn't half bad. I tasted the BBQ grilled pork and it was quite good. The fried rice was not bad either considering I'm not a big fan of Chinese sausage (as much as my gf). Ok get your sick mind out of the gutter that's not what I mean. Ok maybe for a sec but I thought I was the only perv here.

Rhodel D.

Yelp
Walked in and not too many people, we seated ourselves. Seated for 10 minutes, I ended up walking to the counter to get lady's attention to take our order. We ordered the spring rolls for appetizers and was denied because lady said they were too busy, not enough employees, and prioritized other to-go orders. Ordered two bowls of soup. The couple sitting behind us complained to the lady they've been there for over 35 minutes and have yet to receive their bowls. Big sign for my wife and I to leave. We really wanted to like this place but first impression was no good. We walked out, sorry Bayon, too many red flags...too bad.

Stephanie F.

Yelp
WTF, restaurant ran out of cups! Didn't offer or notified. Gave Order and went to the back and never returned. Cup doesn't fit half the soup! Will not be going back!

Mai M.

Yelp
The lady who works there was very nice. The restaurant was very empty during lunch hour and it is pretty beat down there. I asked for a few items (spring rolls, quang nam soup, & rice plate with egg rolls) and they were all unavailable. I ended up getting a rice plate with chicken, shrimp, and eggs. The food tasted decent but wish I could eat what I wanted and not eat what was available. I won't be back again.

Thao D.

Yelp
Always great to go eat here love that the food tastes the same ( #55) on hit every time. Prices are great and gots that mom and pop feel to the place !!!!

Michael E.

Yelp
After a recent visit, a tasteful atmosphere, and home style food along with comfortable pricing, the pho, and the home cooked style plates are great for meals during lunch or dinner. A lot of customers take their orders togo, whixh makes dining feel personal, and the TV is in view in one room, as well as larger tables in another. The restroom is consistently clean, and the kitchen is slightly visible from the outside.

Christian P.

Yelp
The food is great. I always order number 37 , because I love my friend ride with a. Sunny side up egg. I even order their pho which had a lot of flavor in it. I would definitely recommend this spot for you local eaters.

Cassandra D.

Yelp
The food was good but when I went to order I had to get up to order bc the guy at the front desk wouldn't get out of his chair (wasn't a order get your food than sit. It's a restaurant). And he kept telling the poor girl in the back to check on the other tables while she was cooking and cleaning in the back.
