The 21 Best Restaurants in Memphis, Tennessee | Eater Nashville

"Perhaps the most famous establishment in all of Memphis, the homes of blues music, B.B. King’s Blues Club continues to offer high-quality life music every evening with a booming sound system and towering stage. Tables and counter seats are littered about the two-floor club, offering plenty of views of the music acts, which change every evening. Surprisingly, the food is very solid, especially the gumbo, which offers a burly dark roux base, heavy spices, solid chunks of Andouille sausage, and a scoop of a plump rice to bring it all together. Other bites are well-made, too, including fried catfish and French fries. Don’t expect the food to wow you, but that’s not why you’re here anyway. The tunes are dance-worthy and plenty of fun, especially with a huge ice cream sundae to finish." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

First time visiting Memphis and I wanted to check out BB Kings based on their reviews. I ordered fried okra, side of Mac n cheese, and a combined shrimp and catfish platter. Pros: the portions are a decent size, so I was able to order one platter and share with my 12 years old. The platter only came with one piece of fish but since we had the okra as a starter and Mac n cheese as a side (upcharge) it was more than enough. The Mac n cheese was good, very creamy and flavorful. The food was also hot and the service was great. The okra was very good as well, mostly because the sauce really kicks it up a notch. I also really enjoyed the hush puppies that came with the platter. Cons: in terms of the flavor of the fish and shrimp, it was okay but not great. For me, it wasn’t stand out or unique in any type of way. Would I recommend. Yes. The restaurant does play music so it can get kind of noisy and it was kid friendly (We went earlier in the evening).

So fun!!! Walked in for dinner and also enjoyed a great band. (There is a cover charge for adults.) Ron was a fantastic waiter!! Took very good care of us - my delicious sweet tea was never empty! Ribs were fall off the bone delicious and the shrimp and grits were so good!! We added hush puppies - a very good idea on our part. It was all so good!!! Service, food, atmosphere... perfect!! Only negative - the men's bathroom attendant was rude to my 15 year old (no reason, uncalled for!)

Google
Great experience. Very loud with the band playing but you need to expect that. Amazing ribs, chicken was good, loved the coleslaw and beans too. Great family experience at lunch

Google
Where do I start!!! Service was brilliant, Nate made both our visits so much fun, really made you feel valued, not as a customer but as a person. Food was excellent, first visit (yes we went there twice) we had chicken wings, gumbo and shrimp poh-boy and the second visit we had the BB King salad with grilled chicken and also the pork tacos. Great flavor and huge portion sizes. The live music was excellent, made for a great experience. Highly recommend a visit.

Oh my goodness - YUM!!! We stopped in Memphis while on vacation. And, of course, you can't skip getting bbq while here! I'm so glad this is where we decided to eat because there was zero disappointment! We ate here for dinner on a Sunday evening and the place was packed. Be prepared for a cover charge if there is live music ($10 per adult, free for kids), but it is completely worth it! Luckily, there was no wait - so, we were seated right away, grabbing one of the last few open tables. We ordered a couple of cocktails as well as the mac & cheese, fried pickles, pig platter, and ribs. Some of the best bbq we have ever had! The ribs were fall off the bone - literally. Everything was favorable and tender. Our ONLY complaint that the pickles were not really breaded and crispy, but more slightly soft, though not mushy. Such a fun experience. I highly recommend visiting.

Google
We were was able to get in without a cover because we only wanted to order food to go. The atmosphere was increase and there were even people there from overseas. While waiting through a couple of live songs from the AMAZING band, my wife was able to hit the dance floor. After we got our food, I felt like I should have been charged a cover 🤣🤣. (The chicken tenders were HUGE and some of the best I have ever had!!)

Google
Bbq ribs were wonderful, as were the chicken wings. The Cole slaw was average, not outstanding. Baked beans were very nice with smokey flavor. My server was there when I needed him. The music was outstanding. I wanted both classic Memphis food and quality music. Food was as good as advertised, atmosphere was comfortable, friendly and fun. Prices were fair. I was not disappointed and stayed for 2 hours without feeling rushed to leave. I also bought 2 bottles of sauce to later share my taste experience with friends and family.

Happy we chose here! The food was so delicious with flavorful food and big portions. All the staff was very helpful and kind, felt the southern charm. The entertainment was surreal to witness, we had the pleasure of listening 2 jazz/blue bands and really enjoyed both performances. We had such a great time! We came around 6:30/7pm and there was a $10 cover charge per person that goes toward the performers. Visiting from Houston, TX I definitely had my fill of Memphis coming here and would recommend to anyone visiting!

Yelp
Staff was super friendly and cared how we felt food was delicious as well! I got the seafood platter and everything was perfect

Greg P.

Yelp
The food was good and the Memphis Jones Band was excellent. The service was great with Eldridge the server.

Yelp
I had such a great experience here. BB's was pretty busy although Beale St wasn't. We were able to get a seat and arrived in time to catch a wonderful blues trio. Note that there is a cover charge to help with the cost of the performance but it's minimal and worth it. The front desk and wait service staff were all friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is very spacious and has many levels for seating. The stage is central along a wall offering a good view no matter where you sit. We ordered a couple of cocktails of which names I have forgotten. They were okay tasting but strong. We ordered barbecue plates with different meats but the ribs were my favorite. They were tasty and very tender. I also really loved their macaroni and cheese and their coleslaw. Listening to live blues while dining is so amazing. I highly recommend checking this place out.

Yelp
Came on a Sunday at 5pm. Beale street was pretty dead. There were people walking around and in the stores, but for the most part, nobody was out hanging out on the street. But BB Kings was quite full with every table taken. So its a good thing it was quieter because it was easier for my friend and I to get a table. The music was fantastic! Great space to experience some blues music! Make sure to tip the musicians ! $10 cover per person - they take credit card. Fried okra was really good. The Memphis whiskey was great as well.

Yelp
The shrimp and grits are TO DIE FOR!!! I've never had it the way they made it and it's delicious!!! I highly recommend! We sat upstairs and live music was about to come on- the house band was amazing- they are super talented and it was cool to hear them interact with the crowd while everyone was enjoying dinner and drinks. The vibe was chill and feel good, you can't help but tap or groove to the music in your seat! My boys loved the music and we knew all the songs. You don't have to like blues music to enjoy coming here! If you enjoy music, you'll enjoy the mood and entertainment! Plus people watching and seeing others enjoy the music and tap to the beat etc etc is awesome and you can't help but smile. As you leave you go through the gift shop where I got a $35 hat. :) Happy we stopped here along our cross country family trip! Thank you for good food, entertainment and service!

Yelp
The ambiance was excellant! The food was lip smacking delicious (the best we had on our trip there) and the service was spot on! Now I can't remember if that man's name was Ron or Don BUT I did take a photo with him. He was amazing and suggested very amazing things to drink and eat. We was so pleased with his service that my man asked him what bills he had due and the guy thought about it for a minute and told us. We gave him the money for it. He was so good to us and he deserved it. The live music was amazing. I loved it. The food outstanding I wish we would have gone back there Saturday night to have dinner. Next time I'm in Memphis this place is my go to spot.!!!

Yelp
Our team was in town for a week and really enjoyed a great team dinner with live music the atmosphere was just fantastic! We had 2 lovely servers who took excellent care of each of our players meeting everyone's needs with a big smile and positive energy. Our water glasses were never empty and those enjoying a drink were all satisfied. As to my dinner, I saw the wings on someone else's plate when I walked in and they looked good so, I had two types of wings and they were delicious. They were not small little nibble the bone wings they were full meaty wings and perfectly seasoned both the dry rub and the buffalo sauce. All my athletes food looked great. I snagged a few of their nachos and I'd do those for sure again! If we're ever back in Memphis we're going back for sure.

Yelp
This was an awesome place to have dinner and listen to live music. The music was off the hook, and you could tell the the people eating here were really digging it. They played some really good blues and R&B. Food was good. I had the Fried Okra, which I couldn't stop eating (although I wish that they were more crispy). For my entree, I had the BB's Famous Lip Smacking Ribs. I thought they were excellent and the meat was truly falling off the bones. The side of beans were also very good. The restaurant is located right on Beale Street. It's pretty large, and we came prior to a snow storm, so it wasn't hard to find a table. I thought service was okay. Although the restaurant is pretty commercialized, as a tourist, I thought this was a cool place to listen to music and have some Memphis BBQ.
google avatar

Yelp
Wasn't expecting good food. But the ribs were top notch. Very pleased with this spot for sure.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The music is great. The atmosphere is fun and lively. The food is really good. Good enough for three visits in four days! Shrimp and grits are addictive. The pulled pork sandwich was the best I've ever had, but maybe could use a tad more sauce, which they happily bring. Don't worry about the side of sautéed vegetables being too healthy. They are sautéed in enough tasty fat goodness to make you want a plateful. The Tennessee Buffalo Chicken Sandwich was perfectly spicy and perfectly crisp. And I'm pretty sure those tater tots are tossed in crack because you can't stop eating them. I think we're going back again tonight.

Yelp
Absolutely loved it here! We were visiting from Houston, TX so we were looking to feel the authentic blues feel of Memphis and I'm just so happy we chose here! The food was so delicious with a lot if flavor and big portions. All the staff was very helpful and kind, felt the southern charm. The entertainment was surreal to witness, we had the pleasure of listening to 2 jazz/blue bands and really enjoyed both performances. We had such a great time! We came around 6:30/7pm and there was a $10 cover charge per person that goes toward the performers. I definitely had my fill of Memphis coming here and would recommend to anyone visiting!

Yelp
We were just passing through Memphis on way home to Chicago from Austin Texas. Stopped here for dinner. The food was excellent. Better BBQ than we had in Texas. We were seated right next to the house band. Couldn't ask for better seats. The band was very good. Enjoyed the experience. Wish we could have stayed longer but had an early start in the morning so left after the first set. So sad.

Yelp
Food was delicious.. I got the marinated chicken breast sandwich and it was very flavorful I highly recommend... service was on point and they were busy .. I enjoyed sitting on the patio while listening to live music .. patio is amazing .. they were pumping out the tunes on a Friday afternoon
google avatar

Whitney A.

Yelp
This was one of the highlights of our visit! There was a $10 entertainment fee per person but the band was great so I didn't complain. The wings were very flavorful and they were fresh. We had a larger group so we ordered a bunch of appetizers and food. I had the blackberry smash to drink and it was tasty but a little weak. Our best appetizer had to be either the wings or the fried okra. It was fried perfectly. I had fried fish, it was seasoned well. Do not get the Cole slaw, it was trash ready....no flavor at all. The bbq chicken was smoked really well and the Mac and cheese was really good for commercial Mac and cheese. I took one star off because our server had a very nasty disposition starting off but she did get better as time went on. The place was packed but if you have time try to check out the pics around the place which is hard with so many people. They also don't take reservations after 5:30 pm.

Yelp
Had a great time, music was exceptional. The jambalaya pasta was sensational, the flavor with the perfect amount of spice is next level. I highly recommend that you try the ribs also literally fall off the bone.
google avatar

Cecile A.

Yelp
Really fun evening listening to some great bands while eating good bbqed chicken. Super friendly and efficient service. Seems to be the best spot on Beale St.
google avatar

Carl C.

Yelp
If you need a spot for live music, this is the location. This is Memphis. I recommend you dress casually so you can bar hop on Beale Street. The food is excellent; you can't get more Southern than that. You can dance while the band plays live music. It's a good time. The service was good, with no complaints. She was able to help us navigate through the menu and drinks.
google avatar

Jami W.

Yelp
What a great time with entertainment and food!! I was told there would be a long wait but we were seated quickly. It was also raining and a Tuesday night. There was a $10 cover charge that mentioned it was for the band. We were seated upstairs with a great view of the restaurant and band. I will mention that it was quite loud but I didn't mind it as the music was very good! The waiter came for our drinks fairly quickly. I ordered the strong island tea and it was just that. For food I ordered crawfish bites and the nachos with pork. The place was packed and the food took a long time to come out. The waiter was also bartending and was slammed so I understood. He was very apologetic. Now the food was well worth the wait because it was all delicious! The crawfish bites had a lemon bite to them and the nachos were a large portion with plenty of cheese and meat. I ended up with food leftover to take home even after sharing. The music or should I say entertainment was on point! The vocals were amazing and the band was talented! We had a great time and I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Juliane D.

Yelp
Great service. Wild ambiance but the music was truly fantastic. We highly recommend the Pork bbq plate. It was enough for 2 of us to share. Finger liking good. The ribs melted off the bone. True Memphis BBQ!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
The BBQ was good but the music was way too loud. Two of us shared a dinner with pork ribs and grilled chicken with sides. It was very good and a lot of food. Unfortunately, the music was just too loud to relax and hang out. I mean ear-splitting. We left as soon as we ate. I was also disappointed in the bands. They were good but not much blues, more R&B and rock. We found better blues down true street.
google avatar

Komal K.

Yelp
Yes it's touristy but it's also fabulous. I can't believe it took me so long to review this place. I visited twice during my 3 day trip to Memphis. Food is typical pub food with Memphis local barbecue mixed in, drinks are good but the best part is the atmosphere. Music, ambience and energy is amazing. I went there early evening and late at night and it was electric both times. It is a must visit for all the tourists coming to Bealy street

Robbin P.

Yelp
We are from out of town and my husband noticed that you had bands tonight. We came in early and caught Memphis Jones in three sets and had a great dinner upstairs. Kam was our server and she was great, attentive and sweet as can be. We shared the jambalaya pasta and wings. Both were delicious. Afterwards we came down and sat at the bar up to the band. Amazing music from Memphis Jones. Can't wait for the next band! Thank you for making our first visit to Memphis amazing!

Janice R.

Yelp
Awesome band. Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Music Great. Will be back!
google avatar

Anisa D.

Yelp
A little touristy, but SO worth it. The band was great, talented, and funny. I tried the Ribs, Hushpuppies, and the chicken & waffles and all were amazing! Some of THE BEST ribs I've ever had, I can't wait to go back! Even though it's a popular place, I didn't experience a wait. If you're sensitive to loud noise, I'd maybe skip it, because it can get pretty loud in there, but we're talking about the city of music here. Restaurant is pretty spacious. Inside has a dimly lit and casual bar feel. There is a $10 entrance fee to get in because of the live band, but again, very worth it, especially if you're a blues lover or just love this kind of ambiance. A Memphis must!
google avatar

Yelp
Speechless. Food was on point. My hubby grabbed the rack of ribs and roll, I had the bbq chicken dinner with Mac and cheese and beans gumbo to start and strawberry shortcake to finish off the most amazing Valentine's Day dinner. Our server was engaging and all smiles every time he walked by. Live entertainment made this packed club vibe until the sun came up. It was like a family reunion. 10/10 for me.
google avatar

Cole K.

Yelp
Visiting from NC on a Sunday. The restaurant was not busy. Our server Kay was the absolute best. She gave us suggestions based on our taste and preferences. The ribs are sooooooo goood. Wow! Best ribs I ever had. We had crispy fries and catfish bites as well as the delicious baked beans. If we ever come back to TN, this is the place we will go for lunch and dinner. We wish we could stay to listen to the band and continue eating. What an amazing restaurant. It's a very nice restaurant. Also, the bathrooms were very clean.

Yelp
Nashvillians on our annual visit to Memphis, got free admission post a Grizzlies game & had a blast. The energy and jazz club vibes take you back in time. We loved the house band and musicians, the service was kind & prompt even on a busy Friday night, and we enjoyed an app (loaded tots) and some great drinks!!
google avatar

Shelley C.

Yelp
Service was excellent, and the staff was very patient with my tired and hungry 7 YO. The music was excellent and well worth the cover charge. The ribs were the best we had in Memphis, especially compared to other highly recommended restaurants. The ribs were tender and well seasoned. The sides were also excellent as well as the bread pudding dessert. We will be back.

Mrs Sausage Gravy B.

Yelp
Oh my way to Roanoke, VA from Nevada and I HAD to stop by B.B Kings to get their famous ribs etc. I have never been more disappointed. My first bite all it tasted like was burnt, for $24.99 a half rack, it was terrible. The mac and cheese looked like it was leftover for the day, and chef looks like they changed the recipe again, use to be a white sauce now it's cheddar. Cole slaw tastes different as well. The only good thing was the pulled pork. Won't be going back for a long time. I Drove from Nevada, and i was so happy they were serving food, but i guess it wasn't for me this time around Sorry B.B but you've lost a valued customer. Afternoon testing your food I was everyone sick, I had major GI issues and your ribs were bad...I should sue you for sending that food out to a customer...I know you can rid of your crappy food to to go customers, but they can still report you! Another update, i threw ALL the food i ate, it was ALL BAD.. YOU WILL BE KEARNING FROM MY lawyer....never again...foodbpousoningbis NOT right

Yelp
A great nightcap for the evening. The live band was on point and played a decent variety of music.

Yelp
This is the place to eat and enjoy alittle music. We went during day so was not too busy. Service good and food really good.I ordered the tatertots dish and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Very crisp with pork , cheese, bbq ! We will always eat here first choice. I'm sure everything on menu is good. Music was very good!

Beverly R.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Most of my family got fried fish, shrimp, and ribs and grilled veggies. I ordered "blackened catfish & shrimp" and grilled veggies, and received blackened fish and "fried shrimp." The female staffer at the bar was awesome. I called after eating lunch to inform staff that my order was incorrect. The female staffer planned to inform other workers. Thanks, Beverly
google avatar

Yelp
Food, service, and ambiance were exceptional! The chicken fried chicken entree was delicious...every component of it was seasoned so well. Everyone was friendly and the live music was great!! Great experience for my first time in Memphis.

Yelp
Passing through Memphis and had to stop and check out the B.B. King's Blues Club. Walked down Beale Street and enjoyed the festive atmosphere with the music and people watching. Hands down we had to stop in at B.B. King's Club. $10.00 cover charge for the live bands that were playing. Cover charge goes towards the band fees, at least that's what we were told. Payed our cover and we were seated upstairs. Ordered SOUTHERN FRIED PLATTER Our marinated catfish and shrimp are cornmeal breaded, served golden and crispy with sweet onion hushpuppies, French fries, coleslaw, comeback sauce, cocktail sauce and lemon. Catfish and Shrimp 24.99 Fries and coleslaw were good. Catfish and shrimp were flavorful and well seasoned. I would have preferred it fried a bit longer for a golden brown crunchy texture. Overall it was pretty tasty. PULLED PORK PLATTER Our pork is dry rubbed and slow-cooked until it is fork tender. Pulled and topped with BB's BBQ sauce, served with baked beans and coleslaw $19.99 Beans and coleslaw were good. Pulled pork was cooked to perfection well seasoned and Hawaiian bread complemented it perfectly. Made some sliders with the pork and coleslaw and the did not disappoint. Really enjoyed our stop here and the food was good and filling. lol very bands were great to listen to and added a cool vibe to the place.

Yelp
Ribs are PHENOMENAL! I was really impressed. Gumbo also really good. Music is incredible. Service is great. It's a must stop!

Yelp
Great music, good food, and an awesome vibe - definitely worth checking out if you're in Memphis!

Yelp
I stopped in Memphis while on a road trip and my dad told me to get BBQ because he said Memphis has the best bbq and HE WAS RIGHT! This place was awesome, not only were they the best ribs I've ever had but the whole place was a vibe. Unfortunately we were in kind of a hurry and only stopped for lunch so we didn't get to experience the live music but I loved all the blues memorabilia and history of the place. The staff were also extremely friendly and helpful. Whenever I get to come back to Tennessee, I will be coming back to check out the night life!

Roxana E.

Yelp
We recently moved to Tennessee from Illinois and, like many newcomers, heard some concerns from locals about visiting downtown Memphis--especially after dark. But we decided to check out the famous BB King's during the day with friends visiting from Los Angeles, and we are so glad we did! From the moment we walked in, we felt safe and welcomed. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere was vibrant yet laid-back. The food absolutely blew us away--highly recommend the mac & cheese, baked beans, meatloaf, and fried catfish. Every bite was full of flavor and felt like true Southern comfort. The live music really brought everything together, creating an experience that was both authentic and unforgettable. We'll definitely be back, and we're so happy we didn't let the local warnings stop us from enjoying this Memphis gem.

Yelp
Amazing music and a great vibe at this place I would love to visit again. I didn't try the food, next time I will.
google avatar

Kathryn J.

Yelp
I came here to listen to some live music, and BB King's Blues Club delivered! I stopped by around 8pm on a Tuesday, and almost every seat was full. I paid the $10 cover charge (cash or card) and then found a spot at the bar. The band was amazing! They have some extremely talented musicians, especially the two vocalists that performed. They played some familiar songs but then would riff, play solos, and mess around a little bit (the pianist somehow snuck the Simpsons theme song into a Tina Turner song). They were really phenomenal. I got a drink as well, and the bartenders are busy so it took a while to get someone's attention. I ordered the Lucille and it was amazing! Well balanced, without tasting too strongly of alcohol, it was gone in a second. Overall it was a great evening of blues on Beale Street.
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Beale Street was mostly dead when we were wandering around 5-6 PM on a weekday, but we had heard that B.B. King's was the place to be for a blues experience and stopped in. We got in early enough to have to avoid paying an entrance fee, and we still got to hear a few fantastic performances. Vibes are great here! A few folks were dancing, and everyone was chatty and friendly. We ordered the gumbo and pork BBQ nachos. The gumbo was not the most impressive - honestly, the gumbo at Disneyland is much better - but the nachos were loaded with cheese and pork and were a great value.
google avatar

Katrena H.

Yelp
The food and drinks left much too be desired. The music was great. Which is what we came for the live band. Service was ok. The drinks no! We had the nachos and chicken wings . A total of 8 drinks for 4 people (2 a piece) .

Tanya B.

Yelp
Drinks were good and affordable. BB King's All Stars were fantastic. It was one the only place on Beale St that allowed our young adults to listen to live music.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Was on a road trip with my BFF had to stop by BB and try the food. Of course it did not disappoint. It was delicious point on salad was excellent and fresh as well as the ribs the mac & cheese and the coleslaw. Our server was the bartender and our server. She was excellent served everybody. Thank you. Nicki. She's the best Nikki.

Yelp
Great ribs - fall off the bone with great seasoning and BBQ sauce! Music also is amazing. When in Memphis - you can't miss this!

Mary W.

Yelp
My husband and I were enjoying the night and preparing for The Camp Corrall Ride Accross Arkansas. We had the best time at B.B. Kings Blues Club! The food was DELICIOUS! The ribs literally fell off the bone. Pulled pork was tender and seasoned perfectly! The live music was AMAZING! Nicole, our server, did a fabulous job of keeping the drinks coming, brought out the food in a timely manner, and although short staffed, she did not let that stop her positivity. She was taking care of the balcony and bottom floor! She is a super employee and deserves more than a free meal. She deserves a raise! I spoke with the GM and gave Nicole the review and he suggested I also share in Yelp. Lastly, we accidentally left our hoodie and long sleeve shirt at the restaurant. I called the next morning and the GM found them and had them waiting for us. If you're in Memphis and are looking for delicious food, good drinks, amazing live music, and the most excellent server/employee, Nicole, and helpful GM. Head on over to B.B. King's Blues Cafe!
google avatar

Jordon B.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to try B.B King's after we finished the St. Jude Walk/Run on September 28, 2024. We were quickly seated when we enter the restaurant. When I sat down there was a weird smell that distracted me for a minute. Our waitress quickly got our food order. My friend ordered the Beale Street Burger. I ordered the Blues Burger with fries. The fries were nothing special. The fries needed more seasoning to standout. The Blues Burger on the other hand was amazing. The Blue cheese crumble, mushrooms, and onions combine for an amazing tasteful experience.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Music, Food, Service and Ambience are an amazing Memphis blues Beale Street vibe. Ribs & Mac n cheese were on point! Tender sticky sweet ribs and that rich sauce. Enjoyed the music and the dance floor with hubby. Going back before we leave!

Yelp
Fantastic time at B.B. King's on Beale Street. Great food, service, atmosphere, musicians! We shared the Pig Platter and all the meats and sides were delicious. Plus, we ordered hush puppies and Mac and cheese which were both yummy, too. The beers on tap were good and the Beale Street lemonade was super refreshing.
