Layne’s Chicken Fingers Will Open in Katy This Weekend | Eater Houston

"A minimalist Asian comfort-food restaurant from the family behind the former Matt’s Fast Food has opened with a focused menu designed to highlight ingredients and quality. Offerings include bun bo, pan-fried pork dumplings and Vietnamese-style coffee; the co-owner says the goal is to perfect a small set of dishes and deliver flavors that stand out. Open daily for dine-in and to-go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m." - Brittanie Shey

Google
Pros: huge portions, friendly service, pleasant atmosphere, plenty of seating Cons: meh bun bo hue, meh dumplings, takes a long time to get your food All they do is Bun Bo Hue (and dumplings), so you just pick your bowl size, noodle type, and protein. They have a few drinks too, like coffee jelly and Cafe sua da. Their small bowls are still huge, and I kinda wish they had an extra small for when I don't want to eat an entire day's worth of food all at once. Service is friendly, and they never get your order wrong. Now for the meh: even when I'm the only person here it always takes a really long time to get my food and drinks. Plus the flavor of the food is just meh. There's better noodle places out there, and while they aren't bad, I don't think it's worth it. They're great people, so it kills me to say it, but I've tried them several times hoping the food would be better, but it's always just meh so I don't think I'll come back 😥

Everyone makes BBH differently and has different broth preferences. So I will say that the broth is sweet +++, not a strong kick of lemongrass--- and not spicy ---. You MUST add a big spoonful of the side seasoned lemongrass chili oil to enhance the broth and make a "hot Jane" or else the broth is "plain Jane". The chili seasoned lemongrass oil is awesome. I'm Vietnamese Hue. Where I came from, they describe the broth as "mặn mè" and "thấm tháp" which I feel the BBH here has room to improve. The BBH here is good and pleasant for the general taste buds. The thigh sliced meat is not cooked to fall apart tender and therefore wasn't soaked in BBH spices. The "chả" is not the "Chả lụa Huế". English music is played. Non Vietnamese staff in the both front and back. No Vietnamese staff here. They only serve BBH, Chinese dumplings, drink options (has Vietnamese coffee for $5.95). So if you are going with someone who doesn't like BBH and you think they offer other options, keep in mind they have a straight forward BBH menu only.

I am on my vacation trip and a couple friends recommend this place. It was a cozy and modern set up Vietnamese restaurant. Very clean and organized. We met the owner and shared the experiences. Pros: the food was tastefull & unique flavor compares to others Vietnam restaurant nearby. The food presentation is detail and well prepared Cons: the noodle is a little overcooked, we asked and know that they just change the noodles brand. Overall, we are satisfed with the new experience. Definitely we will come back.

Google
Bun Bo Hue heaven! Outside of dumplings, the Bun Bo Hue is the only thing on the menu here. It's customizable by noodle, meat options and toppings. The broth was incredibly flavorful. One of the best Bun Bo Hue's I've ever had. They do have a few drink options too. They also make an in house chili oil that has some solid kick! I definitely bought a jar to take home. Definitely recommend checking this place out!

Google
Staff was so nice and explained to me what I was ordering, since it was my first time there. The food was amazing and the coffee jelly was soooo delicious. I'm definitely gonna go back.

Google
Im a bun bo hue fan and Im always looking for a good place to eat my bun bo and I will say this is the best bun bo place. Very flavorful and i’ve a chance to talk to the owner son and know that their chili paste is homemade and I love it. Will definitely recommend to anyone want to try this place.

Google

Google
Well, they pretty much only have one thing on the menu, so you know, it’s damn good. I had the special with some coffee. Amazing. Will be back.

Yelp
Customer service was great when walked in, worker helped with how to order and the choices that we can get. Broth was good, and noodles were nice and soft.

Yelp
Quán sạch sẽ, phục vị rất tận tình và tâm lý. Rau sạch và nhiều bún bò ngon và nước lèo nóng tới cuối cùng. Mình gọi tô nhỏ mà rất nhiều thịt.

Yelp
I really love BBH Noodle House. I came here last year and never got around to writing a review, but it is still just as good as I had it the first time. They specialize in only bun bo hue. Bun bo hue is a beef noodle soup with lemongrass and shrimp paste and pork blood and is just amazing! So different from pho and equally as flavorful! If the thought of blood and shrimp paste is too pungent and scares you, then you're missing out. It's good to try new things. Their dumplings are pretty good too, but a bit pricey so I'd save room for the soup. I come here every time I visit Houston.

Yelp
This place was referred to me by a friend but I've also been looking to go to this place but just haven't had time. I'm so glad I finally did because it's so good! My fiance and I came here to try it on a Sunday and they were fairly busy with 5 tables occupied, families and mom and children's. We ordered at the counter and both got the regular special which was $17/ bowl. Now this is a very expensive price for a bowl because it's typically $10-12 at other places so I was hoping it'd be worth it. And I was not wrong! Service was great and food was brought out within 10 minutes of ordering. The bowls were HUGE! BUT there was alot of meat, 2 pieces of pork blood and 2 hog joints (typically only 1 of each because it's such an acquired taste) and lots of slices of tender beef and tendons and noodles. The soup by itself was already flavorful so I didn't have to add much but I added chili oil and alittle shrimp paste. Their chili oil was so flavorful I bought a whole jar for $15. It was so good!! I'll definitely come back but probably just share a bowl with someone because I felt stuffed finishing my whole bowl. 1/2 would be just right for both my fiance and I!

Yelp
This was our first time here and we are blown away! Amazing food! Great service! Clean restaurant!

Yelp
My family comes here when we crave for Bun Bo Hue. I think it's the best place up north. The menu is very limited, mainly bun bo hue and dumplings. You can order BBH different ways: - Special (dac biet) Comes with beef, ham, pork hock, blood cakes with noodles. - Beef & Ham - Just Beef or Just Ham - Tofu - Pork - pork hock, blood cakes & ham Our family usually order the special since it comes with everything. Small bowl is $14.95 Regular bowl $17.95 Large bowl $21.95 Dumplings: chicken, pork and chives and veggie option. Extra veggies $2.75 The prices went up since I first started coming here, but inflation happened so I'm not really surprised. I always order iced coffee with jelly when I come here, definitely worth trying. Water and tea is .50 cents. They have filtered water and if you don't want to be charge .50 cents, you can asks for tap water.

Yelp
I stopped by for a quick lunch and absolutely love the food and atmosphere alot. Restaurant has a big picture to show what includes in BBH bowl so if you are allergic to a certain food, you can request to remove it. Food tasted great and also the wait time was short.

Yelp
The BEST Bun Bo hue in Houston! The broth is sooooo flavorful and such fresh ingredients. You can tell the beef and cha is high quality! And very clean and trendy restaurant. Definitely will come back :)

Yelp
I was in town for the weekend and was craving bun bo hue and found this place on Google Maps. The gentleman that took our order walked us through their menu. They offer only bun Bo hue and dumplings. You know when a place offers only a select few offerings that it's going to be good. They have 3 sizes - small, regular and large. I got the small and my boyfriend got the regular. Food came out quick and they gave us plenty of veggies, chili oil, shrimp paste and fish sauce. For Vietnamese noodle soups, you know it's good when you try the soup and don't feel the need to add any more fish sauce or shrimp paste. The chili oil is so delicious. It has a nice spiciness. Everything was *chefs kiss*. The icing on the cake to my dining experience was the music they were playing - can't go wrong with some R&B while eating some yummy Viet food!

Yelp
Hate that I'm having to update a review based on multiple disappointing occasions. I don't live nearby and commute a long ways to hit up my favorite bbh spot. This is the ONLY spot I prefer getting my bbh. On multiple occasions I have stopped by during their listed operating hours and they were closed. Although the hours and on their social media states from 10-6:30 or until sold out, it's frustrating having these cravings and they just simply operate on a PRN status. More recently I arrived at 10:20am to order drinks for my husband and family before I start my day. They were not opened. I messaged them on Instagram in which they responded, "Hey! Thanks for checking! We had a supplier not show up at 10a! But we will have someone be back by 10:45a!" So I don't understand, do they just simply not prepare or start anything regardless if their suppliers didn't show up on time? This is so frustrating, and often times I call just to make sure if they're open. They don't even answer but when I arrive the sign says they're open. On another note, their prices for regular bowls went way up! I get inflation okay... but good lord, 2 reg size bowls for $40? I mean... AND to skimp out on the meats... I can't justify. This isn't even a high end fancy restaurant and the price of $17.95 for one bowl regardless if it's a special or not, is just insane! And a $2 sub charge for to-go. Anything else you wanna charge?

Yelp
Yesterday we stopped in for the first time. They were incredibly patient and explained the menu thoroughly for us. We ordered two bowls and a round of dumplings. They had outdoor seating so we took advantage of that since the weather was so nice. They brought everything out to us and it was so delicious! The chili oil was heaven! I was so excited about the food I forgot to get pics lol. The portions are spot on! And again another rave about the staff, a little boy was outside crying and they brought him treats, it's rare to see that level of kindness out in the world. We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
We enjoyed our dinner here a lot! We all got the special and it didn't disappoint. I was too scared to try the chili oil but my family said that it was very spicy and good! We also tried the jelly tea drink which was my favorite - not too sweet but filled with yums. Highly recommend!

Maocir R.

Yelp
Amazing place!! Great service! They were so happy and helpful with ordering. I had the ramen and beef, sooo good. That tap out oil ain't no joke

Yelp
Walked in and sat down but didn't realize you had to order at the counter first. I heard about this restaurant from tik tok and they did not disappoint. The inside was very modern. They specialize in only Bun Bo Hue and had a few drinks on the menu. I loved that you could change the type of noodles to ramen or udon. Their portions are huge too, I got the medium but should've ordered the small. I also went with original noodles and dac biet (which has everything). I ordered a thai tea and it was probably one of the best i've tried. They had just made it fresh too when I got there. The person who made it told me if I wanted more ice in it to let her know and she'll reseal it for me too. The customer service was great. The BBH came out and I tried it without adding anything. The broth was sweet and did not have enough lemon grass flavor. Once I added the shrimp paste and chili oil, it tasted exactly how I imagined. All the flavors came together and created some of the best, probably top 3 BBH.

Breann H.

Yelp
The girls in the front are super friendly and helpful! They check on you constantly and the food was 10/10 !! The flavors really "wake your mouth up" quoting my girlfriend lol CHEFS KISS !! Also the chicken dumplings are AMAZING especially in the broth !!

Kristine L.

Yelp
It is GOOD! The beef was cooking right (not well done, dry, nor broken), soft blood cake, tasty pork, and pepper ham. Fresh veggie and great sate. Nice service. I don't like the .50 for water Will come back

Luis A.

Yelp
Great service. Great folks! Highly recommend! The food is authentic and flavorful. Come with friends and family, plenty of room for all.

This is one of the best Bun Bo Hue restaurants I've ever tried. Highly recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
This place is legit. Very clean establishment and friendly service. The Bun Bo Hue was the best ever!!! Better than any I've had in California. May have to move to Texas for this great food!!!

Yelp
This place is definitely a MUST whenever I visit Houston. My friend introduced me to this place and ever since I can't find better BBH anywhere. My go to order is the Dat Biet BBH and a Coffee Jelly.

Tommy N.

Yelp
Broth is great, chili oil was spicy, overall an awesome bowl of Bun Bo Hue. 100% would recommend to anyone.

Gina N.

Yelp
My mom always raved about this restaurant and I now know why. We had been trying to find a place with Bún bò Huế for the longest but did not have much luck. Until I tried, it took me back to my childhood. The Bún bò Huế had so much flavor and so much food in one portion. The service was amazing and everyone was very attentive. We will definitely coming in more!!

Vinson N.

Yelp
One of the best BBH places in houston. Great portions, meat is tender, plenty of noodles.

Yelp
We went here a few times. At the opening they were super friendly trying to get customers but now it's getting bad. When we ordered the guy at the cashier kept stumbling on taking order. We repeated several times when ordering . When come time to serve our orders got messed up. Then we asked the server if that was the special noodles which clearly stated on their menu board. She looked at us confused by not knowing her own menu. Plus they ripped us off by charging 50 cents more per glass of tap water. Really!!!! WTH??? When I asked the cashier why we've been charged for tap water, she said oh bcoz our water is filter. What's a lame excuse. I told her since you already charged I wouldn't cancel it but I surely will not be back. What's the point to overcharge the customer of 50 cents and loosing a business. Yeah it was 10 of us so they can make another $5 but that's a useless way to make business. This would be my last time coming there. I don't mind paying but just can not tolerate the way the business try to over charge customers.

Lloyd M.

Yelp
The food is fantastic and the ambiance is amazing the only issue I really have is that I wish it was more spacious

Victoria C.

Yelp
They have the freshest dumplings!! And I just love the jelly coffee!! And I've never had pho that tastes so good!!

Jayson N.

Yelp
Tried this new place today. Bun Bo Hue was authentic and very good. Service was great and kind. Restaurant was very well kept and clean. Portions were plenty. Much better than some of the places on Bellaire. Will definitely come back!

Jae P.

Yelp
Clean, good service, delicious food Would definately come again. I've tried many Bun Bo Hue around Houston this one is definitely one of my favorites
google avatar

Jake P.

Yelp
Great service! Excited for the food! She made sure we got what we normally get like... peppers and dipping bowls.

Ruby P.

Yelp
The service was super helpful giving food recommendations. The broth was so flavorful, would recommend getting a bowl of soup here

Silvia L.

Yelp
I came here spontaneously and it was a very nice restaurant. The place was clean and so was the restroom. The staff was kind and super helpful. I got a thai tea for the second time ever and it was delicious, not too sweet either! I also got pork dumplings and they were freshly made and hot and juicy. I would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Sharleen W.

Yelp
The BBH is as good as home made. Everything is fresh to made upon order. I will be coming back. Also, yelp them and get a free ice cold drink before you leave.

Cameron H.

Yelp
First time trying this place and it was amazing. Their Thai Tea was great too. Welcoming and roomy dining area. Simple menu to choose from and quick to serve. I will be coming back.
google avatar

Thieu N.

Yelp
Give this a try after my sis recommended, but it didn't taste good for the price. Paid $19 for a regular side including tax but no chân giò. I walked in around 10:30 on Sunday morning but only 4 people were eating. So that will tell you. I will stick with Cố Đô

Stanley T.

Yelp
I liked the food, service was very welcoming nice hospitality, the overall layout of the place looks nice.
google avatar

Matthew N.

Yelp
A revamp of the previous Duc Chuong with new management and improved BBH (Bún bò huế). Food Menu and food is catering to people who have never tried a bbh and to people who have experience eating it. If you don't know what to order or how to order, the staff will kindly help you. The BBH is actually really tasty! We each got a large bowl, piled a bunch of veggies/chilli/and lime into the bowl. We were not prepared for the heat because the previous chilli wasn't spicy. Overall, quality and tastiness of the food was very enjoyable. Presentation of the food was also well done. Environment The interior is is simple and modern. A mix of old and new..this works really well. Will definitely be coming back soon.

Dylan N.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere, server is very attentive and patient, and food was top notch. This food is a staple for my family and I and we visit weekly!! Highly recommend

Nathan S.

Yelp
The food is delicious and staff are marvelous, my favorite noodle place to eat . Highly recommend for anyone in the area to eat here .
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
It had been 5+ years since I dined here. Back then it was "Duc Chuong No. 2" It has changed hands recently and I guess that explains why I did not get what I'd hoped for. I had been there several times and it became my idea of authentic bbh. But here everything in today's bowl was meager: less beef, bland blood cube, and just a small thin slice fish cake instead of the larger traditional size. It was good enough to finish. But I'll be searching for my new fave.
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
stopped by for my last meal in texas before heading back home. we were all in the mood for BBH and thankfully they were able to seat our big group. The soup totally hit the spot and was super flavorful and delicious! Tons of parking available in the lot. I also tried their cafe sua da and it was so good!
