Fried chicken.
For a lot of people, when you ask them about fried chicken, they conjure up images of fast food-style chicken, which can often be hit or miss. It's too greasy, it's too dry, it's not fresh, the pieces are mostly coating and not meat, and so on. Needless to say, it's quite the controversial subject. I'm not here for that; I'm here to tell you about some of the juiciest, crispiest, most flavorful chicken I've had -- and more!
BB.Q Chicken is one of the most recent additions to the fried chicken scene here in Las Vegas and Henderson, and in a twist, their specialty is Korean-style fried chicken. Compared to American fried chicken, Korean fried chicken usually has a much thinner, almost glass-like crust, and is much less greasier. They're also typically slathered in sauces that cover the range of sweet, savory, and spicy; I've been told that Korean fried chicken is a lot more ubiquitous to Korean cuisine than Korean BBQ, and more popular as a result! The restaurant itself can be found on Silverado Ranch and Maryland Parkway, along a stretch of Silverado Ranch that is fast becoming a destination for foodies from all over.
In short, it was something that I just had to try for myself. My review actually covers two separate visits; my initial visit, and today's visit, both of which took place within days of each other. The restaurant itself is quite clean and spacious for those who want to sit down and eat, but they also have to-go options as well. Of course, I just had to try their chicken; both sauced and unsauced, but I did also order something else to try, their fried dumplings.
One of the first things that struck me was how crisp the chicken was! It wasn't greasy at all; the chicken was juicy and tender, and it was even surprisingly fluffy, something I wouldn't have expected out of chicken! Even their sauced chicken retained its crunch even after being dipped in sauce. In fact, even when I took the chicken home and ate it after a few days, the chicken was still crispy, despite the sauce having enough time to soak into the chicken. And even their "spicy" chicken wasn't that spicy -- there's enough spice to let you know it's there, but it's not overwhelming. The sensation would be akin to a pleasant tingling in the back of your throat.
Needless to say, it was easily one of the best fried chicken experiences that I've had in a while, and they give you plenty, too! I had enough leftovers to take home, and it even made a convert out of my mother, who's very picky when it comes to her fried chicken!
One of the things to keep in mind when you come here is the wait time -- depending on how busy they are, you could be waiting anywhere from 15-30 minutes for your chicken. They make everything fresh, so there's no warmed-over heat lamp chicken here, but I've seen so many people in the reviews complain and ding them for the wait. Really, if you want it that fast, go elsewhere, but don't complain if the chicken quality is substandard as a result. ( Alternatively, order ahead of time so that way you're not waiting in line. I personally don't mind the wait, but they do have that option if you've got less free time. )
Regardless, their fried chicken is unlike anything else that I've ever had -- they've got themselves a new regular customer now! I'm ready to tackle everything else on the menu, it was just that good. Do yourself a favor, if you're in this part of town and craving fried chicken, come here. You'll thank me later.
