The Best Korean Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"While bb.q Chicken may be a global chain, it’s local franchise owner Emily Krouse’s personal touch that gives Saint Paul’s location its magic. Come with a group and order a few varieties of chicken to share. Don’t miss the “K Food” section, whose featured Rose’ Ddeok-Bokki — a less spicy, creamier take on the popular Korean street food — is such a favorite among regulars that it sometimes sells out before the restaurant’s eponymous chicken." - Julie Yu

The Best Restaurants in St. Paul’s Mac-Groveland Neighborhood | Eater Twin Cities

"At this counter-service chicken shop, you can pick from a dozen different flavors of sauces and toppings. For purists, the Golden Original boasts a shatteringly crisp skin encasing tender and juicy chicken. For those seeking something saucier, order the Gangnam Style wings, fragrant with black pepper and topped with slivers of pepper and onion. Don’t forget to add on a few sides to break up the richness: crunchy cubes of pickled daikon; kimchi, fizzy and sour; tubular rice cakes grilled on skewers and draped in a savory-sweet sauce." - Julie Yu

The Best Fried Chicken in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"After chef John Gleason’s beloved Bap and Chicken closed on Grand Avenue in March, a new Korean fried chicken franchise, Bb.q Chicken, took its place. This global chain originated in South Korea, known for an impressive range of sauces, from a “Gagnam-style” black pepper, to Galbi, a smoky Korean classic topped with green onions, to Cheesling, a dry sweet cheese coating." - Joy Summers

Google
Highly recommend checking out this place for their delicious fried chicken. The cheesy corn was wonderful too. My son and I stopped by and somehow the owner remembered us - we visited her Uptown location maybe a year ago.

Google
Their chicken was pretty good. I had the Gang-Jeong Wings and they were decently spicy and had a great tastes. Atmosphere was also nice and I liked how they kept the doors open to let in the fresh air. One thing I do need to complain about is that there is always someone parked at the bus stop that I take to get here. Not just is it inconvenient for me, but it’s also outright dangerous because I have to end up waiting for the bus in the middle of the street so that my bus driver sees me because people decide to block the bus stop with their car and if I don’t wait in the street, my bus driver won’t see me and he won’t stop for me. Now I don’t know that it is this restaurant, it could also be em que Viet or Green Mill that has customers blocking the bus stop, but it is likely that some of those people are going to this restaurant. So to the owner of this restaurant, please tell your other customers who do drive here, not to park in the bus stop. It’s very frustrating that I have to risk my life just so that my bus driver can see me.

Google
Was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. We really enjoyed every dish- best fast casual experience I’ve had in years. Highly recommend! The owner is also very friendly and takes a lot of pride in her restaurant. We have bumped this to our #1 neighborhood spot for chicken.

Google
The food is pretty good. Besides them bringing the food, the rest is self serving and you get what you need. To be honest the only thing I didn’t like was the atmosphere of the place it’s not very well designed and I feel like I’m in middle of an under development place.

Google
Amazing food and the owner is so helpful and nice! Was my first time trying k bbq and she explained everything to me wonderfully! Highly recommend trying this!!! We spent 100$ on many multiple dishes to try and everything was a 10!

No Thanks

Google
Absolutely fantastic Woman owned business. I couldn't help but overhear her talking about her business and she's the real deal, a wonderful asset to the Grand community! The food is to die for. Gangnam style and spicy galbi for life!

Google
Crispy on the outside, chewy in the inside, for chicken wings BB.Q Chicken is definitely the place. We have been going to bb.q many times before and tried different flavor, each gives you the flavorful you can expect from them. We tried their bulgogi poutine and it is very good and plentiful in size as well.

The first time I ate here a Korean mother and her child and husband helped me. The mother explained the sauces and difference between “Gangnam” sauce and “Gangjeong” sauce and offered to do a half half. It was really good for Korean fried chicken in MN! Unfortunately, the recent experience wasn’t so great. The cashier wouldn’t do half-half for wings, only whole birds. The rose tteokbokki missed critical ingredient portions. (There wasn’t enough cream, no cabbage.) The gangjeong wings were served with sliced jalapeño and tasted like sweet and sour fried chicken, often found in American Chinese restaurants. (It should have more soy sauce and garlic. The version we had was straight up sweet and sour. No spiciness except for the fresh jalapeño. No garlic. Lots of sweet and a little sour.) I wouldn’t recommend eating here again based on the sauces being adjusted to a very different flavor profile and the service (not) provided. For din in experiences, it’s a bit dimly lit, some cracks near the window, but tables are wiped down. Very distinct oil smell, but fortunately no grease on the floors. There’s a large bar area but it doesn’t look like they are selling any alcohol. (Not sure what’s happening there.) **Korean food franchises in the twin cities may modify the core flavor elements of Korean dishes and call it fusion. However, this place modified the dishes so much that the dish is no longer Korean except in menu name and brand…I’m not sure what this means, but it wasn’t what I was expecting at a Korean fried chicken restaurant. If you like Chinese American flavors, random jalapeños, and fried food/French fries/rice bowls, then I’d say this location is ok. (The Szechuan Chinese wouldn’t do this to fried chicken though. Pretty disappointing…)

Yelp
Great food! Even better staff! We were confused and the nice lady at the front did a great job explaining the dishes. Girlfriend approved

Yelp
Food was so good and the lady working was so nice and helpful. She recommended things to try off of the menu which was awesome because it was my first time there. Will be back!

Yelp
## bb.q chicken ### take-away order, 6-October-2024 The Ddeok-Bokki is super spicy, next time I will order something less spicy, the Rosé Ddeok-Bokki is probably more my American/Minnesotan speed. All the same, every bite of this spicier version is absolutely 100% delicious -- WOW!! The kimchi is tasty, pungent, and a welcome bite with the other things on my order. Super big call out for the radish pickles!! -- just yummy additions to the meal. Finally, the Galbi Wings are unquestionably some of the best wings I've had. These are not spicy, but they are super sticky and crunchy, an excellent delight. BB.Q chicken is a super restaurant, I hope to be able to go in person sometime, but meanwhile, they are on top of my loves for take away

Yelp
Food is good; but service and policy is horrendous. Literally has a sign that says sauce is based on order size of 8. Order of 8 = 1 sauce, Order of 16 = 2 sauce, etc. Went up to order two L wings (48 pieces) with some different sauces and the guy said it'll be $2.50 for each additional sauce despite what the sign displays! Even worse, half way through the order; the guy walked up and angrily pulled down the sign and ripped it up to shreds. The kind of service everyone looks forward to... Bbq Chicken, Get your people and policies under control. This man was literally raging over a sign that was posted by your own establishment mid-order.

Yelp
I loveeeed the food! I got the spicy chicken wings and it was juicy. The outside was crispy. The rice was filling. Once you order at the entrance you sit down with your number and you can grab a variety of cutlery. Even gloves which is a perspective shift that is quite welcome. I would come back again. There is great lighting, the air is fresh, and there is friendly customers here too.

Yelp
The owner was very nice and shared her story with us. The food was amazing and always fresh and hot. The set up was cute with kpop and kdramas on each tv. It had a nice vibe while we ate our food

Yelp
I discovered this place on Yelp and found the galbi and plain wings to be really good. I always think that food tastes worse when it's take out (as it's cold when you get it home), but the wings were spot on for a catered dinner party. I tried using the website to order, but it was a PIA... I just called in and the customer service was amazing. Really good for korean wings! I'd definitely go back. :)

Yelp
Stopped by mid-day on a Friday and enjoyed a great meal and service that will bringing us back again. Only downside is that with where it is located on Grand Ave, it is street parking which we expected. We lucked out after finding a spot right across the street.. Upon walking in, we were greeting by a really welcoming gentleman. We told him it was our first time and he did a great job explaining the menu and providing suggestions. Food came out quickly and everything was fresh, hot, and so yummy. Of the sauces we ordered - our favorite was the honey garlic. Of the items we ordered - there was lots of love for the fries, honey garlic wings, and bulgogi rice bowl. Food is slightly on the sweeter side IMO so having a side of the pickled radish helped to break it up a bit.

Briauna W.

Yelp
Amazing lunch today, awesome hospitality, owner was so helpful, nice and welcoming. Clean space, great location and food was delicious. She recommended the Gangnam Style wings they were 10/10 cant wait to come back and try all the menu items and a lil birdie told me Ramen is coming a must try and true gem.

Yelp
My husband and I visited bb.q chicken on Grand Ave. Parking was somewhat difficult to find on a Saturday early evening. The establishment looks clean and small. The cashier was helpful by offering us menus to go sit down as we decide on what to order. Both my husband and I ordered a small, 8 wings for $15/each. My husband was glad that he did a small size because the wings are a decent size. As for flavor, the golden original was juicy and tender. I thought it was better than KFC! My husband liked his Gangnam-style wings. We also shared a Rose' Ddeok-Bokki, which we were offered to have cheese, but if we were going to order this again, I think I'd order without cheese. (It was simply shredded cheddar cheese.) They carry Coke products. Overall, we would come again to try more wings.

Yelp
This will become my new go to for Korean fried chicken. My spouse and I have said that this is comparable to a place we love in Chicago. This place is a little small but it's enough space if you want to dine in. They need to do some clean of the corners since it's a little messy. I would say the space is better in the Minneapolis location. Ordering for food was easy and simple. Go up to the counter and order. Bring your number to an open table and it will get delivered. Drinks and utensils are self serve. My spouse and I love only their whole chicken cuts. There are 3 flavors and I wish there was more. The wings are only okay but if you want juicy and mouthwatering, get the whole chicken. We ordered the secret sauce and it was good but a little too sweet for my tasting. I do like the spicy sauce though. As for their rose rice cake dish, it's okay so thought the portion would be bigger. I like my rice cake dish to be spicer but it wasn't. I will try the traditional kind next time. Definitely a place to try.

Yelp
I love Korean food. Yelp knows this, and even notified me that I hit the achievement for Korean Food Fan which entails leaving 3 reviews for Korean food places. I get it Yelp. I'm a koreaboo. I can't help it that the food is delicious! bb.q Chicken is a fantastic Korean fried chicken franchise from Korea, that decided to make its way east side of the river. Onto the fantastic chicken - we opted for a small order of the Golden Original to see just how crispy these guys were. Our server and the owner (truly hustling) said the Gangnam Style was also popular, so we decided to order a small order of that too. They both came with pickled radish, which is a must to cleanse your palette and lighten up the meal but you can buy more if you need it. The Golden Original was perfectly fried and came out steaming - the wings had that perfect crunch into a moist, juicy wing. The Gangnam Style, being coated with a sauce, was less crispy, but still great to bite into and just as tender as the OG inside. It is also advertised as spicy, and it did have a little heat that lingered on your lips after finishing a wing, which was delicious. The only thing - THE ONLY THING - that would have made this experience even better would be beer. And much to my delight, they are working on getting a liquor license to sell, because chicken without beer? It hurts. Can't wait until they get all the pieces together, but in the meantime, their chicken can't be beat. Even if I didn't just love Korean food in general, I'd still love the chicken here.

Yelp
I tried bb.q Chicken one Tuesday evening by myself. I arrived before 6pm and glad I did as there was a steady line there after. Only one person running the front of house and she did great but boy was she busy! I ordered boneless chicken - 1 order with Secret Spicy Sauce and 1 order with Kalbi Sauce. They also offered a free side of sweet pickled Daikon. Each order is made fresh so there is a bit of a wait time. This could be challenging moving forward as their dining space isn't very big to allow for a long period before turning tables. I hope they will improve timing with more experience. My order arrived piping hot and delicious. My favorite of the two sauces was the Secret Spicy sauce. It was generously coated and not too spicy. The crunch factor of the batter was on point and the quality of the chicken was excellent. The Kalbi sauce was fine but rather run of the mill and a bit lacking in quantity. I would definitely recommend BB.Q and look forward to going back.

Yelp
Had the original wings and honey garlic boneless wings. A little peppery but very tasty. My husband and I enjoyed our first visit. We were met with a friendly smile and willingness to help since this is our first visit. We also had the bulbogi bowl which was very delicious. I love the radish that they included. Will be back!

Yelp
Some of the fried chicken was a bit bland not too many flavor. They could step up a little bit more of a flavor and the fried chicken burger was a bit more spicy than normal. The environment, the place is very clean. They provide good customer service, which I like. Price wise it is above a little bit above normal. Do

Yelp
What a great first experience here! Sad to see the old place go but this is a wonderful new addition to this stretch on Grand. We were greeted with the glowing friendly smile of the owner who was a one women show this evening running orders, clearing tables, and checking on everyone. She gave us and every customer who walked in the rundown of the menu. Lots of great options for different tastes. We ordered a couple boneless wings and sides. The Gangnam style was my favorite- the right amount of spice. Can't wait until the bar opens here. They had a very steady flow of dine in customers. Glad they're doing well just after opening. So lucky to have this excellent wing place in my neighborhood. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
You know as much as I don't want to admit it (being one of two Asian, maybe the only Korean in the entire building) I thought it just wouldn't work. I don't know if it was my low expectations but it has met it. The prices are fair, matches what I would pay for it anywhere else, even in Korea. It's spot on flavor profile but the place is still new, working on getting its alcohol license so it doesn't look the best inside but it does not disappoint. I will return with my family again!!

Yelp
Got it on DD takeout. My FIL loves them more than Bonchon (we are Bonchon fans at home) so we had to get some takeout Omg. Nummmmmmmmm We ordered original spicy wings and garlic soy wings. Both crunchy and moist meat inside. The spice level was mild. We also ordered kimchi fried rice and fries as the side The fries were crispy and portion was nice for $7. The kimchi fried rice was heavenly! Gooey and crunchy and spicy. I did not opt to have cheese in it. The sour and spicy rice were perfect Will be back for seconds and thirds and fourths....

Soni L.

Yelp
It was okay. Nothing that really jumped out at us. Service was fine. No one else in the building, so I don't know if it was the time of day, or....

Yelp
Had an awesome time with family at this Korean BBQ chicken place! We got both original and hot spicy sauce whole chicken, 3 sets 8 wings with the Honey Garlic was sweet and smelled amazing, Galbi Chicken wings are flavorful, and the Hot Spicy and Wing of Fired were spicy but not too crazy. The chicken was super crunchy outside and juicy inside. Both ddeok bokki and Rose ddeok bokki were tasty, but I liked the rose one more. The kimchi fried rice is really good, definitely try it! The place isn't huge, but the staff is friendly, and we can refill our soda and water which is great for fried chicken. Parking is a bit limited on the street. Loved the real utensils, a nice touch. I'm definitely coming back for more Korean fried chicken!

Dominick H.

Yelp
So I just moved to St Paul this week and was driving up grand ave looking for a place to have lunch. This place caught my eye so I decided to go in. I was greeted by an extremely friendly lady at the register who could not have been nicer. Good vibes immediately. Then the food came out and holy cow it was incredible. This is the first review I've ever given, that's how much I enjoyed this place. I'll be back. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
This is the real deal. I lived in South Korea for two years, and this is a popular chain even there. Amazing chicken, awesome and authentic tteokbokki, and really good kimchi fried rice. This is a must try.
google avatar

Rod S.

Yelp
Four of us, so we decided to try a few things out. Got an eight pack of secret sauce, galbi, plain and a sweet one I cannot recall name of. All great. I and we did not care for the cheeseling fries. Were okay just nothing special.
google avatar

Lewis ..

Yelp
This place is absolutely a scrumptious restaurant with a delightfully delectable variety of all sorts of mesmerizing delicacies on their fabulous menu! I will definitely plan on making a journey back to this well-acquainted establishment in the near future!
google avatar

M V.

Yelp
Overall my husband and I enjoy all of the food - all very tasty & flavorful. Mala Ddeoki-Bokki was my husband favorite because the spice builds up as you eat more. I like the Rosa as it's not as spicy and more creamy. The cheesling wings was my son (age 3) favorite and he's pretty picky on his chicken. So it's a thumbs up for kid food as well! Food was still hot & crispy when we got home (20 mins drive). Definitely will go here again and recommend to others.

Yelp
This was our first time visiting this restaurant and it will be our last. The sign out front states "bb.q Chicken & Pub" and a big neon sign inside says Chicken and Beer, however upon entering, there is clearly no pub and no communication about why not. The place looks like it's still in build-out stage. There's more work to do to get this to a great place to eat in. As we were waiting to order, there were a number of other guests all picking up take-out. This made sense after our experience. The ambiance is lackluster and the service goes with it. Other than dropping off our food, no one came to check on us to see if we needed anything or how the food was. The drinks are self-service but it almost feels as if you're entering a staff area to do so. And finally the food. We ordered golden boneless wings which were subpar. The chicken tasted extremely odd and they were flat strips of chicken, nowhere near a boneless wing. The regular Galbi chicken wings were the best thing we ordered. Nice and crispy and flavorful sauce. We tipped 20% when we ordered which was extremely generous. The only service we received was someone taking our order at the front counter and someone delivering our food from the kitchen. I hope they can turn things around as we are big fans of supporting local restaurants. #disappointed

Katie A.

Yelp
The food is always hot, fresh, and of high quality. This location is always consistent in the product they put out. The owners and staff are delightful! We drive a further distance just to go to this location.

Gee S.

Yelp
Did their cheesling fries change? I feel like I got robbed from the cheese they would normally put on the fries. Ordered on 2/18/24

Merrick P.

Yelp
Ordered online, food was ready when expected, host was nowhere to be seen. Barely got a grunt when they reappeared... OK, so I guess my 20% tip wasn't appreciated. Ambiance is echoing loud techno music. Chicken was sub par: could have been good, but the hot sauce poured on it was a sickly sweet gloop. They only sell whole chicken or wings from small birds. The kicker was the coleslaw I paid extra for: literally two tablespoons in an oversized styrofoam tub for $5. When this location was bap and chicken, it was great. Now that it is just one of 100,000 franchise locations, it is just really shit. At least I know 100,000 restaurants not to eat at.
google avatar

Megen L.

Yelp
Wings are great, I have tried 4-5 sauces and found the original to be the best honestly. The size and quality of the wings are great also, and the price also reflect the quality. I would highly recommend as a treat!
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
YUM, thats what I'm saying when I'm eating this chicken. I'm already a wing fan but I've transitioned from wing stop and BWW to bb.q. The wings are always fresh, thick, juicy, and crispy. I've tried their hottest flavors and they are delicious! Can't wait to try out the rest of the wing dips. I have yet to eat in store but the ambiance is nice. And the service people have always tried their best to be helpful.

Matthew M.

Yelp
I live nearby and have stopped in to eat multiple times. The chicken is awesome: juicy and tender, the coating crispy and not heavy. The sauces are awesome. Only drawback is that the restaurant is *constantly* blaring an endless loop of K-pop at *very* loud levels, even if no one is there and the place is otherwise very quiet. It's so loud that it's annoying. Otherwise tbh its better chicken than BWW.

Kathy S.

Yelp
I had the original wings today, and they are the best I've had. Crispy, light withe a little kick of spice

Aye M.

Yelp
scamming ass prices. like? then they tried to tell us we were actually saving money. the food was bad and salty.
