I must have been in a really good mood this day because for me to purposely eat Korean/Mexican fusion food is unheard of. I like Korean food and I like Mexican food but not combined. I don't like "sweet" foods and it just seems to me that "fusion" almost always means "sweet" food. That was the case here.
Of all the food trucks that were lined up at Moveable Feast Willow Glen, BBQ Kalbi had the shortest line. I'm not into hype so I decided to give the underdog a try.
The gals that helped me out were friendly enough. Food popped out pretty quickly. Alright, good so far. They had 3 types of sauces (spicy mayo, wasabi, chili) and jalapeños so I helped myself to each. I like variety.
Korean BBQ Spicy Pork Burrito $8.50 - I was shocked to see the size of my burrito when it was handed to me. Easily the smallest burrito for the price I've ever paid for. I thought to myself, it's not about quantity but about quality. I opened it up and found the meat ratio was low (pork is cheap!) and plopped onto one part of the burrito instead of evenly, no bueno. First bite had no meat. Second bite had some meat. Third bite, sweet meat, aaaak! My nightmare, I immediately added the spicy mayo and wasabi sauce to cover it up. The burrito wasn't "bad" but it definitely needed those side sauces to "liven" it up. It's all about those sauces.
Korean BBQ Beef Nachos $8.50 - Another shocker, at this price the smallest Nachos I've ever had. It's apparent they use the same BBQ sauce on their meats because this tasted exactly like the Pork. We poured jalapeños over the top to make it edible.
Coke - I rarely drink soda but I was pleased to see they sell them for $1.
I decided to stick with 3 stars because even though I don't like "sweet/fusion" foods, I know many people do. It's unfair to rate them strictly on me not liking sweet food. Or as the great John "Profesor de Yelp" D. would say, the kinder & gentler Räv, or softie. I can see the appeal of fusion style because I know peeps that LOVE their Panda Express, yuck! I'm just not one of them.
For me, I'll just stick to Korean or Mexican on their own. As for Mexican food, there are far too many larger, tastier and cheaper burritos to be had. If I want Korean BBQ, there are plenty of all you can eat places that cost just a few bucks more.
Side Note, Food Truck Rant (not a factor in rating): The popularity of these food trucks has taken a turn for the worse. They no longer provide cheap eats. Their prices are just as high or higher than actual restaurants. What's the point in that? No good.
