The Best Restaurants and Bars in Carlsbad, California | Eater San Diego

"Opened by East Coast transplants more than a decade years ago, this longstanding brunch restaurant operates until 2 p.m. daily. Must-have dishes include the mushroom and spinach hash, strawberry shortcake pancakes, and a claw-packed lobster roll. Each month features new espresso or hot drinks, like Mexican hot chocolate or the raspberry white mocha, that are absolutely worth trying." - Candice Woo

Great experience. Normally there is a wait to get a seat, but not today. We ordered the Chilaquiles, 2 egg breakfast, chicken biscuits and gravy, Salted Brown Sugar Bliss. Wasn't a fan of the Chilaquiles, although normally that's my go to at restaurants. Loved the Chicken biscuits and gravy. The salted brown sugar Bliss was wonderful and I would order it again.

When I entered the restaurant, the staff greeted me warmly with friendly smiles, making me feel welcome immediately. My server, Omar, distinguished himself with his respectful demeanor and genuine willingness to accommodate my requests. For breakfast, I chose the Southwestern Bowl, which was packed with nutritious ingredients and bursting with flavor, making it a healthy way to start my day. I also treated myself to a delightful, fluffy, and sweet Lemon Ricotta Pancake. The atmosphere was inviting, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal while sharing the experience with my furry friend, Moana. To top it off, I loved the Motown music playing today; it really added to the great vibes.

We hosted a bridal shower here and it was the perfect venue for our group. The staff was so helpful and the whole process was seamless. We rented the private room and it was set up so beautifully. I highly recommend getting the white table linens, greenery, and cake as well. Thank you for making our day extra special!

Google
The breakfast burrito was solid — one of the better ones I’ve had lately. The French toast, not so much… still soggy and undercooked. But the real letdown was the service. We sat forever before anyone brought water or coffee, and once our food arrived, it was radio silence. No check-in, no refills, no chance to ask for extra salsa. Meanwhile, half the staff looked like they were on a break at a family BBQ — just hanging out in groups, chatting it up while we sat there trying to flag someone down. Customer service clearly wasn’t on the menu.

Wonderful breakfast here on a Monday morning. Had the omelet with jalepenos, Pablo’s, cheddar and ham! Breakfast potatoes were awesome too! Great restaurant! Highly recommend. They sell jams as well!

The food at Blum Kitchen was absolutely amazing! Everything was cooked to perfection, full of flavor, and made with care. You can really tell they put love into their dishes. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious and satisfying meal!

Five stars in all areas this is an amazing place wonderful clean layout big outdoor seating area with heat lamps. And the food was above excellent. Came here for breakfast and really enjoyed fresh baked local bread, homemade jams. Amazing omelette.

Google
Very good local breakfast/lunch place in lovely Carlsbad, California. Impressed by the wonderful and delicious healthy options in addition to the usual traditional breakfast foods. The lavender latte made my morning along with the honey granola. There is a filling "build your own omelet" area and did I mention they bake their own coffee cake, muffins and breads served with homemade jams. I tried the Pear and Ginger with my multigrain toast. Yum!

Yelp
My favorite place to go! Food is delicious and service is always amazing!! The Lemon Ricotta pancake is so good. This is my birthday and Mother's Day "place" !!

Yelp
Service was great. We were able to walk Right in and be seated. Food came out pretty quick. I just had simple 2 eggs and pork links. It also came with a huge piece of coffee cake. It was filling. I had to take coffee cake. My son had chorizo hash he really liked it. It also came with coffee cake. Unfortunately, I failed to take pics. But this place must get busy because looked like they had a waiting cue for line It was good. Go try it

Yelp
We love Beach Plum! Great food, good service, pleasant atmosphere. The white bean chili is one of my favorites, especially in cooler months. Coffee cake, eggs, pancakes...you really can't go wrong! The owners (same owners at Tin Leaf and Black Rail) bring that New England charm to their establishments!

Yelp
Beach Plum Kitchen is a delightful spot that offers a warm and inviting dining experience. Known for its cozy atmosphere and fresh, high-quality food, this is a place that leaves a lasting impression. The avocado toast here is a standout, perfectly prepared with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor--definitely a must-try. Pair it with their super hot coffee, which is rich, aromatic, and a perfect way to kickstart your day. The attention to detail in their food and presentation truly elevates the experience. One of the highlights is the charming outdoor seating area, ideal for soaking up the sunshine while enjoying your meal. Whether you're looking for a relaxed breakfast or a laid-back lunch, the ambiance adds an extra layer of comfort to your visit. Beach Plum Kitchen combines friendly service, delicious food, and a lovely setting, making it a fantastic choice for a casual yet satisfying meal.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Banana coconut shaving . It was very filling I could not finish it. The service was fine and knowledgeable. It is a very cute place. A little pricey for breakfast but worth it for the specialty type menu. I'm going home today so when I'm back I will try again. I may get the lighter faire menu next time ,

Yelp
This is in my opinion the BEST breakfast I can get in San Diego. I'm a big foody and have tried a lot of breakfast and brunch joints around here so I feel that's saying a lot. The fact that this restaurant has 4.3 stars in beyond me. For starters I got the braised beef hash and my husband got the chorizo hash; the flavor was TO DIE FOR. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Then for dessert we shared a lemon ricotta pancake and WOW. The pancake was so good and the combination of flavors in the pancake was very impressive. But my most favorite part of this place was their jam and bread. Safe to say I took home some Strawberry Basil jam because WOW. Kayla B was our server and she was super attentive and gave us a great experience. Ambiance is so cute too. Overall THE BEST AND I STAND BY THAT.

Yelp
I found this restaurant today! Hannah was my waitress.... works her tail off! My food was in front of me within 10 mins of sitting at the bar. Great menu selections. I enjoyed my food immensely and observed my bar mates orders - all looked delicious. The only thing that I tried that I didn't truly love was the coffee cake - it was very dry. I will be back!

Yelp
Short version ~ just go it never disappoints This was our 2nd visit to Beach Plum as we were in town for the weekend. We visited on a Sunday, Labor Day weekend, around noon. I love that they have the online waitlist feature. When we checked in with the hostess she offered the counter if we did not want to wait. I appreciate that the counter seating is spaced well enough to not feel like you are encroaching on your neighbor. The service was excellent and drinks were quickly served. This visit I opted for two specials; the peach and blackberry toast and a horchata latte. My husband ordered the braised beef machaca hash. The toast was a flavorful change from avocado toast and the ricotta was creamy and a nice contrast to the fruit and multigrain bread. It looked sweet but was not overly so and nicely balanced. The machaca is full of flavor and the portion looked deceivingly small but was filling for my husband. The horchata latte was sweet and good and by my observation at the counter in front of the barista, very popular. The restaurant has a good selection of Monin syrups, so they can customize coffee orders well.

Yelp
The service was accommodating and attentive. Very large place that's convenient for a solid breakfast. I wasn't too impressed with the food. Ordered the build your own omelette and was given an entirely different omelette when served. The avocado that came on top was also horrendous and looked like it had gone bad a week prior. Eventhough I was put off by this initially, I eventually got my omelette and it was decent but nothing to rave about. I would maybe come back here and try something else on the menu!

Yelp
Tip: DEFINITELY leverage the Yelp wait list to put your name in before getting to the restaurant, especially during weekends! We arrived after a bachelorette weekend celebration and had a large party. The number in our group changed a couple times because people needed to leave to catch flights, etc. and the staff here were SO accommodating. The hostess was most gracious with updating our requested seating and keeping us in the loop about the wait time. The food here is phenomenal! Highly recommend the jam sampler with fresh bread. They make all the jams in house and it's fun tasting a bit of every one. Our waitress was awesome at introducing things on the menu and making recommendations. We ordered a whole feast (some pictures included here) and left with bellies super satisfied. A great brunch spot!

Yelp
Any restaurant that allows me to get coffee cake as a side instead of toast is my kind of jam. Beach Plum offers up a variety of breakfasty magic, including but not limited to: omelettes, pancakes, waffles, a couple Mexican dishes and some Benedicts. Yours truly opted for the 3-egg omelette that comes with 5 ingredients of your choice. I went with smoked andouille sausage, mushrooms, avocado, cheddar and smoked mozzarella. Super tasty and it was giant. Perhaps even better than the omelette, the potatoes were amazing. When I die, I want to be buried in those potatoes. Oh, and it came with coffee cake on the side because why not? I went home with SO many leftovers. Service was quick and friendly, ample indoor and outdoor seating and a good amount of lot parking. Cheers!

Yelp
Every time I come here I have great service. The staff is always attentive and the food comes quickly. The restaurant is clean and bright. I usually come by myself and sit at the bar or a table. I know they can get busy and have a wait but I must pick the right times because I never have to wait. I like the option to waitlist yourself on Yelp too. There were quite a few groups there both inside and out. Parking can be a bit challenging normally but it's a little harder now because there is construction next to La costa coffee. This visit I ordered traditional eggs Benedict with my eggs poached medium and potatoes (you also have a choice of fruit). It came out quickly and was perfectly done. The muffin was a bit challenging to cut through, even with a serrated knife but it wasn't hard to chew. The food here is always consistent which I don't find with most breakfast spots and I enjoy coming here. I never feel awkward coming by myself either. I wish it was warm enough to sit on the patio but May gray is keeping it cool.

Yelp
Food was delicious and everything tasted very fresh. The almond coconut French toast was very good as was their chili. The service was great we got seated very fast and the server was nice and quick on refills. The setting is cute it is in a shopping plaza.

Yelp
I had hands down the best breakfast i have had in the last 10 years . This restaurant is hands down a 5 star dining experience. The decor is absolutely lovely and relaxing. I really enjoy the ambiance here . Our server was very friendly, attentive and answered all of our menu questions, making her very helpful. The food is outstanding. It is served hot , fresh and most importantly delicious. The New England lobster roll is incredible. Served on homemade bread and a choice of a side . You must try the lemon ricotta pancakes. They are to die for . All of their pasties are well above average . I also really enjoyed the pistachio latte. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
I really hate I can't give this establishment 5 stars. The people were nice. The ambiance was perfect. The tables and floor were clean. Maybe me receiving an undercooked raw in the middle pancake was just a once in a lifetime thing.

Yelp
Simply amazing food and service! Thank you chefs and entire team for a great experience every time!

Yelp
Beach plum remains a family favorite because of the amount of options and the quality of all the food! We love being able to build our own omelets and the different sides. Be sure to try the coffee cake and the sourdough bread WITH their jam selection. Also this place has really good drip coffee, I occasionally opt for their matcha!
google avatar

Yelp
Came for a team breakfast. Food was great and portion big. Very nice atmosphere as well. My colleagues enjoyed their meal

Laurie t.

Yelp
You HAVE to get the jam sampler with bread! Homemade and amazing! My iced chai tea latte was very good but it would have been nice to be notified that subbing coconut milk would add a dollar. I had the 3-egg omelette. If I had known that asking for egg whites would add almost $3, I wouldn't have ordered it. I was a big omelette and the only disappointment was that the onions were not caramelized as described. My husband had the breakfast sandwich. He thought it was tasty but a little messy to eat. Service was very good. I'd come back and would like to try some other things.

Yelp
Beach Plum Kitchen is a weekend staple to get away from the long work week. My usual is the Two Egg Breakfast but last weekend I ordered the House Roasted Turkey Club Sandwich on Sourdough. It was delicious. Our table service was good and patio ambiance was pleasant. The patio is dog friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute diner with nice ambiance. Great selections on their menu. Decent prices and good portions. Their coconut almond French toast was really good! Great customer service as well. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Our breakfast experience here was very good. We were a table of 15 I believe and our server handled everyone's orders really well. Everyone got different things to share and we all enjoyed what we got. We especially liked the French toast! We sat outside and it was nice to feel the sun and enjoy the ambiance.

Yelp
Came here for brunch on a Saturday and it was busy! Luckily our wait was short. Great food and ambiance.. we had a BLT & Chicken Fried Chicken. The gravy was delicious.. and their house made potatoe chips are super crunchy. They charge an automatic 5% surcharge.
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
First time here and was not disappointed. Staff was beyond friendly and our waitress was super sweet. Mom is picky and she loved everything she ordered. I felt good knowing everything here is clean and they have vegan, gluten and dairy free options. Will be coming back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
We LOVE this place. They have a great location with plenty of parking, indoor AND outdoor seating and a DELICIOUS menu (everything was great). Service was ok - after we got our food, we hardly saw our server and had to flag someone down for to go boxes. We wanted to try the lemon ricotta pancake so we ordered a side which was one pancake and were surprised to be charged $7.50 for it which seemed expensive since that is half of the full entree price. The place has great vibe with plenty of seating. Highly recommend

Yelp
Had a pretty good experience here! Parking - in a shared shopping center. You could get lucky with front parking, but if during brunch hours, may need to park near the other shops and walk a little. Not too bad though Service - For brunch time on a Saturday, we had a party of 6 with a dog, so had to do outdoor patio seating. VERY surprised that we only had to wait 5 min or so after putting in our name. I felt like I won the lottery. The waitress was very kind too, thinking of the sun beaming on us and thinking of how to provide us more shade. She was very nice and professional. Ambiance - Seems like almost every other brunch place in San Diego/North County area. Nothing spectacular or unique when it comes to decor or ambiance. Nothing to complain about, but also nothing to boast about. Food - Overall, everyone was pleased with their food. You have a lot of the same brunch offerings that the other places have. Typical breakfast stuff. I got the smoked salmon and potato cakes. It was very good! I also liked that they had Soju Baby Driver (mimosa with Soju instead of champagne). Although it didn't taste like Soju, nor did it taste like orange juice. Price - Some of the items were fairly priced. But I feel like my meal alone (smoked salmon with potato cakes and Soju driver) were very highly priced. It is in the part of Carlsbad with the higher incomes, so makes sense this may seem average to them.

Yelp
Great place for a Sunday Brunch! My friend and I both got the Chorizo Hash and it tasted amazing! They had homemade jam that went with their selection of breads that came with the dish. Great portions, we both left with leftovers for the next day.

Cherie B.

Yelp
Have been regular customers here since they opened. Breakfast this am poor - machaca dish. Inedible. Spoke to manager- would not take it off the bill, her attitude was you made a bad menu selection. Won't be back.

Yelp
Well what didn't go well.. The entire experience was fantastic. Food- A+ (see attached photos) Service- Good not Great but good Ambiance- fantastic we sat on the patio and it was so nice 75 degrees and beautiful day Tip- join the waitlist on Yelp.. popular place, promise you will thank me

Yelp
The food was delicious. I had the buttermilk fried chicken salad and my dining partner had the breakfast sandwich. Both items were prepared with fresh ingredients. The salad was dressed with a nice, light green goddess and the serving size were decent. The breakfast sandwich was complimented by my friend. The service was stellar. Our server, Hannah, was attentive and very familiar with the menu. They have a nice selection of beer, sparkling wine and kombucha. The ambience was what you would expect in a cute town like Carlsbad. Nice decorations and very clean. A nice place for a weekday or weekend breakfast or lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
1st time here and we enjoy our breakfast Food was okay - freshly made to order Service was okay - shout out to our server Juan T - he's friendly and accommodating Ambiance is nice and clean decor is cute clean space and friendly staff

Yelp
So we made it here twice during our trip to the San Diego area; first time was awesome with service and food. The second time was pretty horrible with level of service and my sandwich was missing cheese which was a little annoying. I'm going to blame it on a bad day since I saw how great it was the initial time. Would've loved to have had management come by and check in on tables but didn't happen either time. First time was on a Sunday and the second time was on a Wednesday so you might very expected the weekend experience to be a little worse or less attentive but it was reversed strangely. Hope management can focus more on guests and less on hanging with staff at the bartop area.

Yelp
Food was delicious very eclectic menu bright and cheery inside. Our server was Hannah and she was amazing at offering suggestions since this was the first time we had dined there. Definitely will go back when we are in the area.
google avatar

Vanessa V.

Yelp
I love the breakfast here. Had a vanilla latte with traditional egg Benedict. Very yummy and highly recommend.
google avatar

Jillian N.

Yelp
Visiting the area on vacation. Found this place online and saw they had appetizing options. Seated right away. Cute cafe style. Started with the coffee cake: personal opinion, warming this up would make it a 10/10. The flavor is there but it's lacking softness. I ordered the traditional Benedict: muffin was quite hard, but it was good enough that I would order it again. Potatoes were the star of the show: amazing flavor and portion. Pancake was traditional, safe choice. Total bill came out to $46 after the 5% surcharge. Suggested tips start at 20% on the kiosk. Server was nice, but I think they could be better at offering refills before suggesting to start there.
google avatar

G B.

Yelp
The chilequilles had outstanding flavor and freshly made tortilla chips. The Lemon Ricotta pancakes (opted for gluten free) were really good especially for being gluten free! There are so many menu options that sounds so good that we definitely have to come back to try them all. The service is great and fast. We dined on the patio with our fur baby where they provided blankets and heaters.
google avatar

Kayla W.

Yelp
The food was delicious and there were so many great options. Plus we loved that their patio was pet friendly for our pup. I would recommend!
google avatar

Allie L.

Yelp
This place is so cute! And the food is great! It has a modern diner vibe with counter and booth seating but updated decor. It had plenty of booth seating and patio seating with shade. The menu had enough breakfast classics like eggs Benedict's, French toasts, pancakes, waffles, and sides but with gluten-free options as well. Got the classic eggs Benedict which comes with a side of potatoes or fruit. Potatoes were so amazing! The egg on the Benny was perfect...all about that LEAK! Also ordered the coconut almond waffles (we asked to substitute French toast for waffles). We really enjoyed this as it was not too sweet. The shredded toasted coconut and bananas complemented each other well. Waffles were fluffy inside, a bit crispy on the outside. Our server Lauren was so sweet and attentive. We thought she looked like a younger brunette Blake Lively (maybe a little?).
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
Always delicious and fantastic service! The coffee cake is the best. Always ask for this as your side when offered and if you are too full, take it home for a treat to enjoy later!
google avatar

Yelp
Swung by for a quick breakfast away from the Omni resort and it was slow around 8 am. The staff are so kind a friendly here! They seated us and checked on us from time to time, but not too much. I ordered the steak and eggs with biscuits and steak was medium rare, just the way I like it. Food came out to perfection for the 3 of us. Service, food, nice weather, I highly recommend!
google avatar

Bruce M.

Yelp
Fast service, friendly staff, moderately loud, tasty ingredient combos, delicious and innovative house-made delicacies, surrounding customers ordered every type of meal and all looked amazing. Ours was delicious. Recommend highly.
google avatar

Alexa B.

Yelp
This was worse than a Denny's. My matcha latte was just a huge mug of milk, and my mom's chai latte was cold and flavorless. We got the kids gluten free pancakes at the suggestion of the waitress because they were dairy-free (my kids can't have dairy), but she said nothing about an extra $2 charge to make them gluten-free or I would've ordered them eggs instead! My mom and I both got the traditional eggs Benedict. It was just okay, except the potatoes were dry and tasteless and mealy and way too big of a portion (who needs that much of a bad thing?!)...like I said, the same quality as a low-end chain breakfast place. My husband got the breakfast burrito and said it was "nothing special." All in all I would NOT recommend this place, and would NOT go back. Not to mention this place had a 30 minute wait (it was more like 15 in reality). I'm not sure how it could have a wait with how horrible it was! What a waste of $70.
google avatar

Allyson D.

Yelp
Nice outdoor patio dining and awesome menu. It was hard to choose what to get! I ended up with the veggie hash with scrambled eggs and the homemade angel biscuit. The biscuit with homemade raspberry rhubarb was soooo worth eating. The hash had a great amount of spinach, red bellpepper, and poblano. Would've been nice if the potato was a little crispy since the spinach is wet. My bf ordered the lemon ricotta buttermilk pancakes with homemade blueberry lemon jam. They were delicious as well. Our waiter was quick. We were given waters without ice, but did not hesitate when we asked for ice in a cup.

Yelp
Was down in San Diego for the weekend and felt like going out to brunch with my wife. Beach Plum Kitchen was on the way to the horse races, so we put ourselves on the Yelp waitlist and went by. It worked perfect. i had the Machaca hash, and it was delicious. My wife had the carnitas, and she really liked them as well. Happy to come back in the future when we are in the area, and it was a very convenient brunch spot. Glad we did it and Yelp didn't steer us wrong!
google avatar

Maren B.

Yelp
Our first time here and it was a fabulous experience. Arrived early and didn't have to wait. Always a plus, but this is a popular breakfast spot, and as we were leaving, noticed there was a wait. The coffee was delicious and they have real, fresh half and half. Not the little creamer cups with preservatives. I had a mimosa with pineapple juice and they gave me just the right amount of juice. My wife got the quinoa & coconut porridge and that was soooo good. It was giving tropical and the texture was sooo creamy. It definitely satisfied the sweet tooth that you'd look for in pancakes or french toast. I got the huevos rancheros with chorizo and loved it. Everything was fresh and I I really enjoyed the tomatillo salsa. I wish I could remember the server's name because she was so kind and attentive. We will 100% be back. I already have my eye on the coconut & almond crusted french toast!!!
google avatar

Tina T.

Yelp
Cute breakfast spot with indoor and outdoor seating. The area we sat in was not very comfy but not a big deal. Server was polite but not attentive. Bloody Mary was not very good. My eggs Benedict was awesome. Wonderful hollandaise sauce and perfectly poached eggs. Potatoes were not my favorite. Needed some crisp. Very bland. Had to wait forever for the check.

Yelp
I'm so sad that the last few experiences I've had at BP have just been so bad! I used to love this place, and I go quite often (5-7 times a year) with groups of girlfriends for brunch and birthdays. It was our go-to place! I've spent so much money here over the years, but it has gone downhill for sure in quality and service. To start with, the service has been terrible. We are either super rushed by the servers to order, and then before our food if even done the bill is brought out. No refilling of waters/drinks, no asking how our meals were... borderline rude to us every time, like they couldn't give a rip about us being there. Secondly, the actual food has been only ok at best. The potatoes taste old mushy and reheated 10 times, the muffins and coffee cake were dry and no way fresh....for the cost of food here, it's quite embarrassing for it to be so bad lately! My most recent visit, when all of us clearly hadn't eaten most of our breakfasts, the server didn't ask if it was ok, just gave me the bill. When I said it didn't taste fresh, (again, we maybe ate 1/4 of the meal), she said she could take off $5. I spent $87 on 4 breakfasts, all were pretty bad and most uneaten. I never asked to be comped, but $5? I simply will now be taking my business elsewhere. But for the sake of the community and regulars, I hope Beach Plum can get their service and food back up to par.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of taking my nephew here for breakfast. We were luckily enough to not have to wait by sitting at the counters. The food was delicious and the staff was amazingly friendly. The portion size was perfect and one of the best pancake I've ever tasted. Definitely great place to bring the family.
