Wicker Park Gets Gator Sausage Po-Boys and Beignets on Friday at the Former Beachwood | Eater Chicago

"For 65 years the Beachwood Inn occupied the corner of Beach and Wood in Wicker Park and was remembered as an iconic dive before being gutted and replaced by Ina Mae Tavern & Packaged Goods." - Ashok Selvam

The location is absolutely amazing but the rooms and service are absolutely horrible! The room smelled like mixture of pee and cigarettes. The curtains didn’t even block out any lights which blaze outside your window all night long. I paid $135 for one night. We were kept up all night long with some idiot revving his engine in the parking lot which nothing was done about. Through all this I asked to stay a second night and then wanted to charge me $165. Just crazy absolutely do not recommend. It’s not worth the price even being that close to the beach!

Google
Safest place within miles of any beach, and it’s only one block away. If priority is not walking a tight rope of rules and regulations while having oneself and property left alone from the usual threats of tow trucks/thieves, the is the spot. The staff is hyper vigilant enough that the urban campers actually behave, without nosiness or drama either; Leaving door literally opened to other wall for a day, (unattended), of a room stacked with holiday shopping without a single person entering from noon to 10pm proves the staff efficiency at maintaining security. Train track is one block east, beach boardwalk one block west, so it’s not quiet, and rooms exude a memorable je ne sais quoi->this is the ultimate lowkey, no tow, youdoyou, reprieve from the urban sea of rules/heat/drama of coastal cities.

We booked for Thursday-Sunday but ended up moving to a new hotel on Friday. The women in the front office was very nice when I explained why we needed to move. This motel has no AC and is really close to the train tracks so my daughter had a hard time sleeping. It’s not the owners fault they’re so close to the tracks so I still gave them 3/5. They gave us a refund for the days that we didn’t stay which I thought was very nice of them. The location is very close to the beach which makes it a very convenient place to stay.

Cheap, but smelled like mold. No bedbugs, a nice strong fan, and soft bedding. The woman made a deal with me about the payment, so that was good too. Overall, it was better than no hotel, but, really smelled like mold... However, I didn't have an allergic reaction, so it's just a smell.

Our service was terrible. Granite we only booked it to sleep at night but even at night it was super sketchy, loud and hot. We aren’t provided with no A/c but a small useless fan. On top of that we were told water is turned off by 4pm by one lady and 5pm by the gentleman, they hadn’t told us this until we already had gotten the room. The rooms didn’t look like anything in the picture provided. I’m reading other reviews and no other review saying anything about their water being turned off.

This is a budget motel. The owner Iva is as nice as can be. This is a clean motel and in a great location!||One block from the beach. They do have trains that go by and it can be a bit loud. Not that bad. I did not see one roach or insect in my room. They loan out boogie boards and chairs.||Coffee every morning in the office and fruit and Danishes on the weekend. I would stay here again. Great for families and couples. My overall experience was excellent. No complaints! If u want a beach getaway . I would definitely recommend.

Google
I liked it. Cozy lived in retreat from a day of adventuring. Conveniently placed close to beach and roomy. Older building and small parking lot so may not be for everyone. Definitely for smaller short vehicles. Some electrical plugs may not have grounding socket (two holes not three).

Google
I went to Oceanside with my family for a little 4 day getaway. There was a huge convention so all the hotels were either booked or outrageously priced. When we found this one, I read the reviews, was a little nervous, but booked it anyway. ||||This adorable beach-side (literally beach-side) motel was perfect for what we were there for...the beach and to relax.||||There were NO Cockroaches and the owners were completely hospitable. They had Boogie boards and beach chairs they let us use on the beach which the kids just loved. Although there is no AC, they have fans available and it really isn't even necessary since you are on the beach and the temperature drops so quickly.

Yelp
If I could do zero star, I would the rooms are disgusting. The bathroom door was a curtain and a top it all off. They double charged my card and the owner or receptionist won't refund my money stay far away from this place.

Yelp
My family and I have stayed in the motel suite many times in the past years. Motel is right next to the beach and we have always felt safe staying there. So We had reservations for this weekend and on the way there, we had a family emergency. I had to cancel 30 minutes before check-in. The owner was very understanding and did not charge me anything!! May they be blessed abundantly for their kindness. Thank you!!

Yelp
some may beg to differ, however the Beachwood in Motel has been nothing but good to my wife and I. Yes there is sketchy people around the corner yes there's a train, but that's all over Oceanside. The staff is excellent I am in fact ended up doing a long-term stay here and never had one problem from the staff as long as I paid my rent on time... We're talking six months here people!Anyway Miss Melanie and Mr. Sam are the caretakers/owners and they are awesome they'll let you know when they have a problem and leave you alone when there's not. And the beach is less than 60 second walk from my front door! What more could you want. If you're trying to get away from somebody or some thing this might be a good place to consider!

Yelp
Is this the Ritz Carlton? No. Does Beachwood deserve 5-stars for what it is? YES!!! It's a little run down and could use a few upgrades like new windows, but for the price point and thoughtfulness Beachwood would be hard to beat. We actually stayed at the nearby Motel 6 our first night in the area because we wanted to have a look at this place before committing (the call placed was a little challenging due to accents). We moved the next day and never looked back! The rooms are each different and we had the big end unit, but for about the same cost as Motel 6 we had the equivalent of a small one bedroom apartment...a block and a half from the beach! Melody and Sam, the owners, are very sweet, delightfully attentive - and still manage to leave guests alone until something's needed. They strike a great balance between service and facilitating relaxation... Not easy! The *only* negatives are the nearby train ( but that's a hazard of the entire area and faded into the background pretty quickly) and a lack of air conditioning (between fans and windows we weren't ever too hot even in August). There was initial uncertainty about the Service Dog, but mostly it was just unfamiliarity. A smidge of educating and assuring Melody that there wouldn't be dog-damage was all it took. Oddly enough, I think it was a first for them! Sam turned out to be a dog-lover. Lol!

Yelp
Just to be clear , this is 5 stars for old motel that got new manager and working very hard to make things better. I wanted to get some time off to get back into surfing again with out freez in San Francisco water so I drove to San Diego and stop on the way at Ocean side. I found this place on the way and had hard time to decide if I want to spend the night here and I m glad I did . It's old building with old windows, blue carpet, the bathroom need to be remodel and the old TV remind me of my grand mother house and on top of that , there is a train sound every once of a while so you are probably wondering , this is all bad stuff , why should we come here? Well , this is why The place is super clean You can't bit the location , one minute from the beach, great restaurants close by and walking on the pear is awesome ( u can get a coffee in the end ) Safe to stay Under $100 a night in the weekend And the owner is super sweet, warm and make you feel at home. Highly recommended

Yelp
The Man on the property is rude AF!!! The minute we pulled up he was up in our business. First thing out of his mouth was "too much Comar", during our one night stay he also told us we smoke too much and right before we left (we weren't even on his property anymore) he said "pinche madre" motioning at me. The front office lady is very nice. The room was clean, but there is no AC and the WiFi connects but you can't actually use it. The refrigerator barely worked (my husband takes insulin that needs to be refrigerated), the TV had mostly Spanish channels, towel rack in bathroom fell off 3 times, toilet didnt flush right, warm but no hot water, no hangers to hang clothes, no ice machine and buckets, vending machines only take credit cards. We will spend our money elsewhere next time. Best thing was it was a block and half from beach.

Yelp
The place is very inexpensive. No ac but they have fans and ocean breez. The property managers are kind and helpfull. They do have units with refrigerator and microwave. Over all it nice and very close to the beach

Yelp
Giving two stars because the receptionist was atleast friendly.. My experience was horrendous here. Paid almost $100 for a room and couldn't sleep at all because the train blew by all night honking it's horn. There were people that loitered outside this motel that appeared to be on meth. You know, giant dilated pupils, skinny, pacing, chain smoking, and super unkempt. My window didn't even have a curtain so after getting out of the shower I'm sure these people saw me. My room was small with no ac (just a beat up box fan) and I just feel plain ripped off.

Yelp
Scanky motel with more than half the rooms being occupied by welfare recipients. I am embarrassed that I recommended it to friends who wanted a 1960's older motel. Room rug was filthy! Everything old and threadbare. It smells like cheap sanitizer, marijuana (from the local residents), and also - dare I say it(?!) Desperation. Not a deal at any price!

Yelp
Bed was very old and the room was not tidy. The few furnishing in the room was very outdated. The main door was not secured and looked rundown. Small room for the price with limited/lack of amenities. Parking is limited. I will never use their services. The lady at the front was very nice though.

Yelp
$96 for a queen bed (firm/hard bed, on wheels), microwave, small flat screen with cable and a mini fridge. It is next to the beach and train tracks. The train did pass a few times during my visit but the noise didnt bother me. The walls are thin but my neighbors werent loud. The bathroom was clean but the curtains had stains. The security of the front door was low. The parking lot is small so we had to pay $2 to park in the lot behind it. The motel could use some TLC but overall i enjoyed my stay. I would recommend this place if you dont have high expectaions.

Yelp
Priced right. Elderly couple managing was very accommodating. Clean room. Ocean is a 1minute walk away.

Yelp
This isn't the fanciest hotel you'll ever stay, but I challenge you to get anything nicer for the money in Oceanside. On a spur-of-the-moment trip to Oceanside, we were looking at paying $180+ for a room at the Holiday Inn, which is nice, but hardly worth the money. Instead, we wound up with a full suite here for less than $100. Our room had a full-size fridge and stove, the bed was comfy, and the shower was nice. None of it was fancy, but it's way more than we would have gotten anywhere else. We were in stumbling distance of downtown and the beach, and the manager was the single nicest person I've ever found working at a hotel. Seriously, it's worth going just to meet a human being that friendly here in SoCal. There was a cute cat, too. Downsides: You're right by the train tracks, so if you plan to sleep late or are sensitive to noise, this isn't the place for you. There's no online booking. The water pressure isn't impressive. If those things don't bother you, you're going to have a great time here.

Yelp
Easily the dirtiest, most broken down place I've ever seen. A solid step down from the worst Motel 6 you could find. Extra amenities such as a bathroom door and working window would have gone a long way. I was forced to rent a room because of lack of vacancy at other, much nicer hotels.

Yelp
i booked the room for a Soccer Tournament in La Jolla with my grand daughters. It's a older Motel, the price is right and the place is super clean. It's right next to the train tracks, it's a pleasant sound but once your alseep you don't hear a thing. We had a full kitchen, stove, microwave, coffee maker it had everything we needed to enjoy our stay, I really like the fact that it was cozy. I think what I liked best was the old windows you push up, you could smell the ocean. Fancy Hotels are nice, but being at the Beach was the best and I know I'll be back again. If your a Beach lover, this is the place to be. The bedding was clean & fresh and we slept like babies. You can't beat the location , one minute from the beach, you can park your car for the weekend, great restaurants close by and walking on the pier is awesome, we enjoyed dinner at Ruby's at the end of the pier. The weather was great! Safe place to stay and the owner is super sweet & very warm she makes you feel right at home.

Yelp
great price and super close to the beach. The owner is friendly and extremely nice and had a wonderful time staying there. There is no AC but they have box fans and the moderate cool climate of Oceanside, CA you hardly even notice. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an inexpensive place close to the beach.

Yelp
old motel, but it was what i expected for the price. This place seems to be under new management as the two old ladys there were gone and a new couple is currently there. Went back this october and i could see that the outside had been repainted and the room walls were repainted. I didnt see any bugs or stuff like that and it looked clean to me. They dont got the best accessories but if the room is clean and bug free and has a working tv im cool with it.

Amberlee M.

Yelp
This place is NASTY!!! They have BEDBUGS. We didn't even stay there, we walked in to change and we went to the beach, we came back and there was a bed bug on a sock we had. Never coming back to this place ever.

JC B.

Yelp
$89 seemed reasonable for being right on the beach, till I found out the TV and shower didn't work!! Two things I was most wanting. However, when I told the manager the next morning she immediately offered me a free night in a different room. She was very apologetic.

Justine R.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place, it's old yes, but very clean. The owners are very nice and welcoming. There's no central air but if you need a fan all you have to do is ask and they bring you one. It's within walking distance to everything, the beach, tap room, breweries, food, everything. The price is low and the value is extremely high. I WILL be returning to the beachwood. Good job to the owners, they really have something there.

Yelp
motel is one block from Oceanside beach and pier. also close to metrolink train station walking distance. motel us poor quality but I stayed there one night due to circumstances bring your sheets to sleep. room smells paid 70 plus tax for Saturday.

Jessica L.

Yelp
The hotel is very loud with the train tracks behind it. There seems to be residents there up at all hours of the night. I heard a mentally ill man outside my door at 3am talking how he got attacked by an octopus, the room across from me had there TV on all night which was very loud through the paper thin walls. The people above me were arguing and the people next to me seemed to be meth addicts from their appearance and conversations. Overall I was scared to even spend the night there alone. Especially since the door doesn't even adequately lock.

Billy K.

Yelp
If you're looking for a five star resort, you'll probably be disappointed. That being said, I consider it a great value. A block from the beach and for that price, it's hard to complain

Melanie V.

Yelp
Yes this is an older motel but very clean and you cant beat the location one block from the beach and one block from the center of downtown Oceanside the train is only a bother till you fall asleep and the owners and management are the best

Sheryl G.

Yelp
I love this place. I have stayed there a number of times and always got treated with respect. I just think they need another house keeper. There's a lot of rooms to clean for one person. I use to clean the rooms a lot of years back when the old managers were there. And I would do it again. I haven't meet the new manager but I plan to soon.

Tom F.

Yelp
MY WORST NIGHTMARE COME TO LIFE!!! I relocated to San Diego County from Montecito (santa barbara) for a fresh start this place will leave you wanting to jump in front of a train. I was robbed , my car was damaged on several different occasions and my life threatened by the onsite live in drug dealers and prostitutes. They took all of my cash and personal belongings, charged my mothers credit card up w over $7000 in room charges. On more than one occasion i was threatened by Bill the husband of the management team...married to Iva. I brought the above issues to their attention and they ignored and looked the other way ultimately forcibly removing me after 7 months occupancy with only a few days notice...this was because i spoke up for myself also heard from neighbor because of my sexual orientation...tgey did not want my faggot money as it was not drug kickback as that is primarily the clientele they cater to. If you value your life or well being...RUN DONT WALK FROM THE BEACHWOOD MOTEL

Hannah K.

Yelp
This had to be the worst motel I have ever experienced in my life. My friend and I had planned to get away last minute and this was literally the only place in San Diego that had a room available. I go to the "lobby" and the woman was the most unfriendly even thigu I had just paid her a very heavy penny for one of her rooms. We show up at the room and the lights are all broken and the tv barely worked, the freezer melted our ice cream and the microwave was dirty. That is just the beginning. From 10:30pm to 4:30am there was a mentally ill man staying in the room next to ours and he was screaming on the phone about how he wanted to I quote "bomb the United States of america" I was soo scared so I went downstairs at 3am to speak with whomever was in charge. The door was locked and I rang the bell for about 4 minutes, no answer. I went back upstairs and woke back up again and went downstairs at around 7am, after the man had stopped screaming. I go to the "lobby" and the man at the desk was there. I told him I would like a refund because of all the inconveniences and he said they didn't do refunds. He said I should have came downstairs and told him the problem earlier. Then he began to argue with me that I did not ring the bell during the night because he sleeps there. Which is a huge lie as I rang the bell at least 10 times. I then said I would call a lawyer and have my money refunded if he didn't already do it then he said to me "that is your choice, but if you do that then I will sue you for your attitude" no one should ever come back here, I am disgusted in this establishment and I hope the owners of it see this review
