"Ask any in-the-know New Yorker where you might score the best vintage in the city and you’ll likely get this answer: Beacon’s Closet. A goldmine of sorts, Carrie Peterson’s legendary consignment store has a little bit of everything—from au courant pieces by Proenza Schouler, Isabel Marant, and Acne to one-of-a-kind finds that walked straight out of 1970 (where do you think all those epic Hawaiian shirts Zoë Kravitz wears in High Fidelity came from?). Now with four locations (Greenpoint, Park Slope, Bushwick, and Greenwich Village), this vintage mecca continues to reign supreme. (Also see: the recent mass upcycling following the Kondo craze). Give yourself ample time to dig around—who knows what you might end up walking away with. Images courtesy of Carly Rabalais."

More vintage. Stop in Spritzenhause if you need a pretzel, fries and root beer/beer.

Google
Great go-to and cheaper than other vintage stores in the area. If you search thoroughly through the fast fashion, you can find great vintage pieces. The atmosphere and layout are a vibe and easy to navigate. Perfect place to pick a colorful piece, also great for shoes. And they have colored tag sales most days!

I am not into secondhand clothing. But this store got me interested. The space was huge, collection was unique and most importantly, the place was packed with decent-shaped merchandises. I left the store empty-handed because finding the right size was a task, but I will return to the store and surely go through each items next time I am in the neighborhood.

Google
This location is extremely biased. After hearing similar accounts from my community, I intentionally packed my items in a large suitcase to see if they would be examined. I dropped off my suitcase and was told it would be ready in 3 hours. However, when I picked it up, my suitcase was basically untouched! AND they had only taken THREE items out of the 29 I had packed. Keep in mind that these items included vintage brands like STIZZOLA and Elliot Lauren, as well as current mid-to-high-end brands such as PIINK and BCBG—some even brand new with tags. Yet they only purchased 2 bags and ONE shirt! Shame on you, Beacon’s Closet.

Daniel Baker

Google
Don’t waste your time trying to sell here. I only brought three items- all new with tags- and they will make you wait three and a half hours to tell you they’re not taking 2/3 of it. Also to make you wait so long it’s crazy to expect people to be back 5 minutes after getting the text notification. If your wait time is over an hour you need to stop accepting drop offs…or maybe assign one more person to reviewing clothes instead of having a bouncer at the door. Seeing the clothes they do buy is WILD.

Google
Absolutely love this place. Hidden gems and worth looking into. You can also sell some used items. Items they purchase is base on seasons and demand. They’re pretty fair. Weekends are super busy so I recommend trying to sell your items during the week when they’re not bombarded with people. The staff is really sweet and cool.

Miranda

Google
didn’t get anything but this place is beautiful! very organized and eclectic in terms of styles. color coding means that you have to sort through your size urself tho. the price is also reasonable. would recommend it a lot better than buffalo exchange or crossroads 10mins away.

I went to Beacon’s Closet (Greenpoint) on June 8th at 7:40 pm, expecting them to be open until 8pm as advertised. A staff member wearing glasses and braids rudely told us the store was closed, despite others still shopping and another customer being let in before us. When we questioned this, he followed us around, pressured us to leave, and threatened to take our photo and ban us from the store. Totally inappropriate and unprofessional behavior. Disappointed and felt very intimidated. From other reviews I’m reading on Yelp and some on Google, I see this is a trend with rude staff. Definitely won’t return.

Evelyn

Google
Beacon’s is absolutely my favorite clothing store. The prices are so reasonable (50s dresses for $25!) and there’s always such a great selection. I get most of my clothes here at this point!

Yelp
Pretty decent selection and store for thrifting. You're able to also come in and sell your clothes if needed. This is also a rather sizable location which is about the size of a Trader Joe's! Thrifting is a big cultural trend in Brooklyn, and Beacon's Closet here is a formidable choice to do so amongst other stores.i was able to find two winter coats here and was happy with my selection. Thrifting definitely takes time and you have to have the energy to do so in order to dig through racks. However, the prices of thrifting and consignment stores have unfortunately gone up, so I give Beacon's Closet a solid 3.5 stars.

Yelp
This is a large thrift store with tons of women's clothes. They make you check your bags at the door if you have a backpack or large bag but I believe it's in small lockers with locks, so seemed very secure. There was also a lot of shoes at this location which was nice, I noticed a few cute pairs and some nice Nike sneakers. The clothes were surprising to me as I felt they were grossly overpriced. T-shirts were $15, I saw skirts for $30, jackets for $55 and $70, these are new clothing prices to me not thrift prices. The style of clothing was vintage, quirky fashions, nothing caught my eye but there was a line for the fitting room so obviously other people found good things. Overall I was very put off by the pricing and will not be returning. There was nothing at this store worth $30 or more. The maximum anything should has cost in there was $20 I'd say. I even found a purple sweater that was ripped and tagged for $44.

Yelp
I love this location, the have an extensive inventory, they are super friendly staff, always smiling, very diverse, i love it here... only bad thing is i which the percentage for cash was better but overall 5/5 stars

Yelp
What an unpleasant experience. Went there today to sell my clothes. Upon arrival I was met with rudeness from the stuff, who took my suitcase and carelessly tossed it aside. When I received the remaining items back, they were thrown into a stinky bag and my suitcase was returned empty. My clothes were neatly folded when I brought them in etc. they could've at least put them back in. While waiting from my text message from them I was searching through the racks. I noticed many items with stains and holes so I was pretty sure that they would accept most of my clothes. My clothes were in perfect condition ( I decided to sell them because my style has changed since I bought them etc ). They were well taken care and quite expensive but mostly European brands so I assume the staff wasn't familiar with them . Unfortunately, maybe 3 out of 50 items were accepted. I live nearby but still the hassle of dragging my clothes to the store was not worth those 25$ and rude treatment from the staff.

Yelp
There's literally nothing you could say to me to convince me that the staff isn't running through the "donation" section every night for their depop accounts.

Yelp
The Beacon's location in Greenpoint is a lot larger than their other locations - allowing for an expansive array of clothing to sift through. I haven't had luck to find as much Designer here, more so Streetwear or Vintage-style classics. Prices are quite good - so it could be great for costume shopping.

Yelp
I'm sorry but I just can't deal with this place anymore. As someone who lives in the neighborhood, I have tried to sell my *very gently* used or new items multiple times. Today, I brought about 40 pieces of clothing. Again, new & gently used stuff. Up to date fashions and in season garments. Not only does it take 3 hours to have them assess the garments, but they also didn't want one single piece. Mind you, I'm a common size and I brought in both men and women's clothing. To add insult to injury, they text me that they are abruptly closing early due to "inclement weather" ... a thunderstorm already happened and is over. The sun is out. How is that okay? I have plans tomorrow and now I have to rearrange said plans to pick up my clothes. I will probably donate them, but I don't trust Beacon's closet that they will actually donate my stuff as they claim. Also, from my experience- some people that work there are very pretentious and rude. Sorry, I'm over it and going to Buffalo exchange from now on. Byeee

Yelp
I know thrifting has become more popularized with Instagram influencers and tik tok, so maybe that is why these thrift stores in Brooklyn are so pricey. If the quality for the clothes and shoes were better, I could understand the stores having a higher price but you are better off getting new clothe from reg. stores when they have sales. Too many items I picked up had holes, tears etc. and they sell most items as is and won't budge on price. Also, I noted people saying the customer service is poor, that is also unfortunately true, everyone that works there is unhelpful and looks like they hate their life.

Sinead O.

Yelp
Great location for buying and selling. Love all the staff and the great items they carry

Yelp
Sad place . Workers always rude and lack of charisma ( style doesn't give u charisma ) . Clothing selection is bad, overrated and average . Trifling is dead, it's 2023 . Wake up beacons closet ,

Juliette S.

Yelp
Easy to sell, and a really good selection of items to buy! Nice people at the register and counter where you sell.

Yelp
Organized with hidden gems all around the store. I found a gray Oscar de la Renta suit jacket within minutes of walking in. Just what I wanted on my vintage shopping mecca to BK. Fast, prompt checkout process too and trying things on in the fitting room didn't take more than 5 minutes. Just wish there were mirrors around for a quick glance.

Anna J.

Yelp
Beacon's Closet is one of my favorite thrift / vintage shops in the city. I've had luck finding unique pieces at all of their locations, from vintage tee's to super lightly used designer pieces at great prices. Definitely can be a bit of a hunt, but if you're willing to spend some time sorting through the racks you're likely going to find something great. All locations can get super crowded, so that's the only thing that can be challenging, especially if going on the weekends...makes it tricky to sift through the racks.

Liana B.

Yelp
Beacon's Closet is the best thrift shop! The lettering is unique, guy at the front door is friendly. They have an incredible selection, the prices are just right! So much to choose from!

Mayra Q.

Yelp
Scored a bag I had my eye on for a fraction of the original price. It still had the original tags on. Ordering was easy and shipped the next day Great experience and love my bag

Saud B.

Yelp
Purchased a clean, reasonably priced Tee. Shipping was fast, can't wait to see future stock

Yelp
Great deals! It's organized by color though, which threw me for a loop. I think I'll have to come back to actually comb through everything. The people who work here are really helpful and it was very convenient to have access to their locked lockers. Dressing room line goes quickly and is clean. Got some good stuff!

G L.

Yelp
I found it difficult to browse. Organization is by color, not size. My thrift focus is sweaters, but the ones that interested me had holes; and not small ones.

Jazz P.

Yelp
I guess the clothing I bring in suck, cause they never want it. Yet it's sold at Bergdorf's , Sak's and Intermix! Their loss!!!! All colors were black & grey that I brought in. Very cool pieces. Apparently cool cargos and other cool pieces don't work in Park Slope. Yet whenever I wear clothes like this, my friends and neighbors always ask me where I got them. Well, I can't say Beacon's Closet cause they didn't buy a single one I personally don't shop there as I think their clothes are freaking ugly, so I guess it makes sense why they didn't want my clothes! Also, the staff should lose the snooty attitude! They wouldn't know Rick Owens if it slammed them in the face! And they DIDN'T FYI!!!!!
google avatar

Olesya Z.

Yelp
I'm bringing in a lot of stuff! Most of them are brand new! If I leave it to buy without my supervision they take 15-20 items for 50$!!! If I ask the make it under my supervision they refuse to take any!! Also my stuff disappeared!!! They didn't buy anything but few items were missing and I had no proofs

Yelp
Decent thrifting for the brand-conscious but frugal shopper. Mostly lower-mid tier brands (J Crew, Banana Republic, White House Black Market) with a good mix of upper-mid tier (Vince, Opening Ceremony, Allsaints, Helmut Lang, Theory) and some nice designer finds peppered in. Things are generally priced well, but sometimes I'll come across something egregious, like a stained/ripped ugly vintage designer sweater from the late 80s for like $80...uh uh honey. With that said, it's a far cry from many of the ludicrous NYC vintage stores that try to get away with selling a moth ball ridden Armani blazer from someone's late grandma's estate sale for $350+. Always a lot of Joe's, Acne, Citizens of Humanity, etc in the pants/denim section. Store could definitely be organized better. I hate the whole sorted-by-color thing; it's way too difficult to find things in my size. Lots of damaged/poor quality merchandise. Generally pretty reliable about marking it as such ("as is" on the tag) but definitely worth a check before buying something. I've been burned before where I'll find a hole once I get home. All in all, some great finds if you have the time and patience to spend hours sifting through the racks. If not, you can always try The Real Real (SoHo) but you'll be paying a hefty premium.

Sofia Z.

Yelp
Sold clothes here. They lost my slip and gave me someone else's when I corrected them they just wrote the totals from the other persons ticket on a new ticket with my name on it ? Took coat two pairs of shoes and that amounted to $10 to me? Literal theft lol

Sasha B.

Yelp
This location used to be good but they've gone downhill. Selection isn't what it used to be. Not to mention they quoted an hour wait time that ended up being 3 hours and I couldn't wait that long so they wasted my time. Went out of my way to come sell and portion out hours of my day and I couldn't even sell anything. Better off going to Manhattan.

Lily P.

Yelp
I have been going into their stores for years now, they always have great clothes at great prices. Their employees are also very lovely. If you can't get to them I'd check out their website!

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I have been a Beacon's Closet customer for almost 10 years now and I have always found great and unique items at their stores. I only recently placed my first online order with them and now I am hooked. I got a beautiful beaded 1940s evening bag for a great price and a sweater that still had the tags on it. Shipping was quick and I they honestly exceeded my expectations. I just placed my second order!

Nico R.

Yelp
Cool vintage spot. Selection is gears more towards women's clothing. More on the side of wired items you might never see again. Could use more men's clothes.
google avatar

Sonaiya K.

Yelp
I used to live in New York and would make the long distance Bronx Brooklyn pilgrimage to the Greenpoint location to sell/browse. Comparable to Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange, Beacon's is always well-curated and fairly priced. I never leave without spending at least $100
google avatar

E. M.

Yelp
I haven't shopped in-store in very very long, but their online shop is great! I've ordered a few times in the past year or so and have always been pleased with my pickups. Just like in-store there are some good deals on vintage and designer pieces, and they ship everywhere which is a huge plus for me.
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
Enormous inventory with lots of good stuff! We were there for a few hours. Reasonable prices for cute vintage. Staff was very Covid cautious and friendly!

Yelp
The worst Closet of Beacons to shop at. Literally all of the people who work there are either pretentious (acting way too cool for school then they really are) and/or are awfully awkward (and not the social anxiety type). They are terrible at communicating and even worse at communicating. I literally hate coming here unfortunately its the closest one to me and I really do appreciate getting a little coin for my goods but dear heaven I wish someone could give this place an attitude check, customer service 101. and some damn tree to help loosen them up. Go at your own risk. Honestly way better options throughout the city and BK. Yes you'll find some cool vibes but I'm the type of person that vibe matters. I wish they had a better online market to avoid the damn workers.

Emily S.

Yelp
At first you think it's a vibe. But it's overwhelming and security don't even look. ALSO, they steal your clothes when you sell. I can't even argue because I'm a small 5 foot girl against 10 hipster team members like tf. It's my word against there's and an hour half wait just for them to take my MARC JACOBS pants god damn that's a new low. ANYWAYS GO HERE WITH CAUTION.
google avatar

Erica W.

Yelp
I just want to thank the employee who ran out the store to give me my wallet I thought I had dropped in my tote, but it actually fell on the ground which I didn't hear with my headphones on. It was thick with cash as I had just sold a bunch of stuff. Thank you to the blonde haired (I think) guy who worked at the Greenpoint location on Sat 7/11 around 6-7pm-ish. Faith in humanity restored
google avatar

Yelp
Love the indoor decor and their quarantine procedures: provides hand sanitizer and has glass window for the protection! Surprised that the fitting rooms opens! P

Yelp
REVIEW AS A FIRST-TIME SELLER. writing this post to hopefully ease the minds/anxiety of people who have never sold to thrift/vintage/resell stores before. your pool of clothing may have a lot of different items compared to the items I brought in, just keep that in mind. SUMMARY: **Staff: 10/10 super kind folks willing to answer all your questions, patient **Inventory for customers on shelves: 7/10 it's unique that they separate the clothes by color, but sucks because I am a bigger girl that usually wears XL and it was really hard to scout for some good finds for bigger girls. **Return rate: 30% cash or 50% store credit of the price they choose to mark to sell. **Atmosphere: super colorful, great music, brightly lit The process: I came in through the selling door with my items and was informed that at the very moment because we're in the month of August-- it is a transitioning month in the sense that they are leaning off summer and making way into fall. The staff member specifically said that they are only taking the "best of summer" and the "best of fall" at the moment-- which is understandable. I was then checked in by the employee through the tablet and was informed that it would be a 2-hour wait and there would be a chance that nothing would be taken. I would be notified by text when to pick up my items. There are a lot of things to do in the area so if you're just having a self-care fun day the 2 hours will pass by really fast if you're browsing the stores and grabbing lunch. I would say they are very picky with what they are looking for-- so just beware. They took none of my items, that's fair because if one store won't take it you can always go to others such as Buffalo Exchange or Crossroads! Best of luck to everyone decluttering and trying to get some coin before donating their old, but still new clothes!

Billie Z.

Yelp
These stores have such great finds! I prefer going earlier in the day before it gets busy!!
google avatar

Rishi R.

Yelp
Pretty cool place to find some unique clothing items. Haven't bought anything for myself yet, but will be back to browse the collection again.

Irving L.

Yelp
Based on my experience, I believe this store sells counterfeit merchandise. They may not do that intentionally, but my purchase makes me wonder. I bought a t-shirt here from a well-known Japanese label. It was priced below $20, which surprised me. I asked the cashier if she thought it might be fake. She said the store can't vouch for authenticity of anything it sells. Took a chance anyway. Sure enough, Grailed removed the item, declaring it fake. Grailed's experts determined the t-shirt was a counterfeit item. Did the Beacon's Closet buyers know it was a fake when they brought it in? The low price makes me think they knew it was counterfeit in the first place. As consumers, shouldn't we shop with the assurance that a merchant, in good faith, is not selling counterfeit merchandise? Is it our responsibility to determine whether something's fake, or is it the merchant's? Thanks.

Johnny S.

Yelp
Great customer service and friendly employees. Prices were also very good would definitely recommend people check this place out.
google avatar

Colin M.

Yelp
This location, at least, does not have a ton of men's inventory. Mostly eclectic T-shirts, and minimal pants. I liked the jewelry and accessories section, and they have some seemingly very nice women's jackets. They should fix the one dressing room whose door does not fully latch closed instead of just forewarning customers about this problem - they were, however, open to me wanting a different one. The service was good, not great. I think they could try to reduce crowding around the dressing room entrance by not having as many clothing racks clustered there.

J G.

Yelp
From two full bags of around 50 good condition, in season, brand name clothing items (Urban Outfitters, Rag & Bone, Lucky Brand, ASOS, etc.), my pay out was $10.77. Pretty abysmal. Don't bother selling here. The staff person helping me was friendly though.
google avatar

Chunjai K.

Yelp
Very nice, vintage and stylish second hand cloth store. It was fun looking around for many nice stuff. The clothes are separate by color and type and the store also has shoes and accessories. The highlight is you can sell your cloth that you don't like it anymore and get cash or store credit!
google avatar

Melissa Z.

Yelp
If you're visiting NYC and you want to go shopping like a local without maxing our your cards, then come here. I'm going with the Elite Tonja J on this one because she is 100% right - awesome selection, high end & unique designers and REASONABLE prices! People who are poo-pooing this place complain about service or the people working there - who cares?!? I don't! There's a TON of clothes at great places. I went thrift shopping and went to 5 stores; this was the best clothing store in Brooklyn. Why? Quantity. The other Brooklyn stores I visited had a small insignificant amount of clothes that it's not worth the time. Clothes are arranged by colors and types of clothes (dresses, shirts, etc) so that's helpful. There's a men's and women's section and a decent shoe section along the back wall. Lots of boots, some hats, belts, sunglasses and other accessories. A security guy in front offered to take my large bag and securely store it and I thought that was helpful. There are several dressing room stalls so I didn't have to wait to try on clothing. I saw everything from high end designer to small town designers to brands like Ann Taylor. A ton of variety. The prices are higher than other thrift stores in the country BUT for NY prices and compared to other thrift shops I visited, this place has the best prices. I'm talking $12-$30 for dresses. If you're visiting Brooklyn and wondering if this store is worth the hike north - it is.
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
This place is packed full of stuff, so you could probably get lost for hours. Lots of nice items for reasonable prices. The staff wasn't so friendly, but who is these day. I'm on a mission to find the best thrift stores in town, and I'd definitely go back here.

David B.

Yelp
Very dissapointed in this place. Went with my wife and two teenage girls. They only found one item to buy among them in an hour of shopping, which is highly unusual. They told me that many of the clothes they looked at closely had holes or were dirty. I spent 10 minutes or so in the men's section before abandoning it, after noticing that the prices were, in my subjective opinion, way too high. I literally saw used clothes being sold for more than the same item would cost brand new (and not only brand new, but returnable unlike at BC). We're not coming back.
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
My daughter loves to buy vintage clothing so we stopped here for the first time. Neatly organized clothes by color. But kinda pricey. Some clothes had holes. Left with nothing, but was worth checking it out.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Went in with a friend to sell clothing and the lady rudely asked if I was selling, I said I was with a friend. And the lady literally said "well I'm sorry, I'm going to have to send you back outside into the hot sun". She was rude af for literally no reason. I'm never coming back here again. Horrible customer service. Go support a local owned thrift store instead of this pretentious nonsense. Bye
google avatar

Rocio M.

Yelp
Have been going here in the summer and they have sooo many amazing pieces for good prices! I love it. Definitely recommend u to check it out

Jessica B.

Yelp
My happy place -- and probably the best consignment store I've been to anywhere. Some of my favorite garments in my closet found here. And the hunt is v fun.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
We came here to sell on Saturday afternoon. It's very easy and smooth. The security guard at front will stop you but just say you are going to sell so he will ask u to go to the back end. You show your ID to the staff. They will put your name on the list. You can choose to drop off or to stay while the go over the items you want to sale. In the end, you can get cash or store credit. The good thing about this place is they have a lot of stuff to choose from. So I always go for store credit :)
