Had a two night weekend stay. This is an attractive hotel in a good location. Our room was nice, though very small for what we paid. ||The bar area and separate side room are both very nicely decorated - but we definitely felt they lacked a little in atmosphere - mainly due to the overly bright, cold lighting. Adding in low lighting lamps, dotted around and softer overhead dropped lighting generally, would totally transform both spaces. We've been in several hotels and pubs where they have retro style record player sitting on the end of the bar playing older music in the background (such as Crown Posada, Newcastle) and it's amazing what a difference that makes to ambience, as opposed to piped in music. This is a nicely decorated set of rooms (although drinks v expensive) however a few lighting tweaks would make it so much more welcoming and inclined to stay (and spend money!) longer. Both nights we were there it was pretty much deserted of customers/guests by 9.30pm and this was a weekend! ||The bar staff were friendly and efficient, the restaurant staff less so (and also brightly lit). We found the manager Nikki to be both very pleasant and efficient. We would definitely return regularly if bar/snug room lighting/ambience were improved.
