This place has changed a LOT…. It used to be my favorite bagel shop, I would visit whenever going to the Udistrict. They would make the best salmon lox bagel with tons of toppings! But the past 3-4 times I’ve gone, my bagel is tiny with barely anything on it… I am not sure if it’s new staff making them smaller without knowing, or just cutting costs, but either way $11 for basically no toppings is ridiculous. During this particular visit, I was told AFTER I paid that they didn’t have any tomatoes, and the employee asked if I’d like lettuce instead, which was okay with me. But when I got home and opened it, it didn’t have any lettuce and pretty much no onion or capers or anything. This is how they’ve been making them lately. Was it still tasty? Yes, but I would recommend going to Rubenstein on Cap Hill or SLU if you want literally the same lox bagel (order the “Double Down”) that is twice the size as Bean & Bagel, and very generous on toppings.

What a wonderful atmosphere this bagel shop has! Service is so kind and the workspace is open with natural light. Come early morning for fresh bagels!

this place is absolutely revolting. they should have a serious visit from both the health inspector and the state. there is black mold everywhere, and food prep stations are not being properly cleaned. there are health code violations all around this establishment. from an ice cream machine that has never been cleaned or sanitized, to cutting boards that are used as stepping stools, to sanitization buckets that have never had any actual sanitizer in them. this place needs to be shut down. these are all photos that an employee has shared with the internet. this is absolutely disgusting.

We needed an early morning pick me up, and this place was amazing. The staff was very friendly and helpful, I will definitely be coming back again!

I accidentally came in about ten minutes before the shop opened (google says open at 7, it’s actually 7:30). From the moment I walked in, Mina and Sue were so warm and welcoming which matches the warmth of their cozy shop. They made me a drink, had a nice chat with me and sent me on my way. It’s nice to find a place where you can have a genuine, human to human experience. Breakfast sandwiches are enormous for the price.

They never open on time and their hours are unclear. Google says they open at 7am, the sign on their door says 6:30, and I was told by an employee they open at 7:30. Regardless, three times now I’ve waited outside from 7:25-7:40 for them to open. The one time I have successfully gotten food from here (came back in the afternoon) it was mediocre at best. Dry bagel and sparse toppings on my sandwich. The only reason I keep trying is that I just want a damn bagel sandwich before my 8am class. Waiting for them to open just renders me with no time to go anywhere else before my class starts.

Bean & Bagel Haven is a delightful small business that offers a fantastic bagel and coffee experience. The bagels are perfectly balanced, with a variety of delicious flavors. Great service, food, and drink!!! Highly recommend!!! Heard good things about these guys on npr, and was in the mood for a bagel with cream cheese. So I decided to give these folks a try. I forgot to ask for extra cream cheese, was willing to pay for the extra condiment, and they really took great care of me!!!

bagel was literally the best i've ever had- like, blessed by gods good. service was so tight. all the dudes were awesome and sooo funny. one of them did really cool yo-yo tricks while they waited for the bagel to toast! ambiance is chill. the moped really adds a lot to the vibe of the place and if you tip well enough, they even let you take it for a spin!

They have beans and bagels but not much more. Terrible service. Door locked, so couldn't use seats. Average bagels at best.

As an east coast native, I've been on the hunt for a normal breakfast sandwich. The simple yet delicious sausage egg and cheddar bagel. And this was it. I'm so down for non traditional breakfast sandwiches, but sometimes you just want a classic. The service was great and the environment was so nice!

Bean & Bagel is such a cute name for this cafe and it lives up to its name because that's all this cafe serves- coffee and bagels! With a multitude of different bagels, spreads, and toppings, the combinations are endless! I'm a classic lox and cream cheese type of girl and so that's my go-to order. Sometimes I'll order a coffee as well- they have a La Marazocco machine so you know the coffee is quality. I have had the Ursula sandwich before too, which was good, but not something I'd get on the regular basis. My favorite bagel is the whole wheat bagel, but the other bagels are good too. Bean & Bagel is very generous with the cream cheese, but they could be more generous with the toppings. Service can be slow depending on the time of day, but the longest I've waited is probably around 15 minutes. This is good place for catching up with a friend or for ordering to go since it is a very tight cafe with little seating area. Overall: 4/5 for food, 4/5 for service, 4/5 for ambiance

Extremely long wait times. Twice I saw people leave a 3 person long line while waiting to order because it took so long. It took 10 minutes for one person to get a latte, with no orders in front of them. That said, the bagels are okay. The egg and cheese sandwich has quite a lot of cheese though, but that's probably just personal preference. It was also barely toasted and cold inside.

Used to be one of my favorite places before they reopened. I think they have new management or something- the menu is totally different now, there's not really anything special about their bagels, and service is a bit disappointing :/

They only had cinnamon raisin bagels. Then it wasn't toasted. And they're were four dudes working and no one said hi for a good 2 mins. And I was the only customer. Kinda weird. Just go to blazing.

High-quality bagels for a pretty respectable price, and kind staff. Nice little area to sit too, a perfect choice if you need to chill by the Pop Health building. Would highly reccommend.

I came here in the morning to get a bagel because I had forgotten my breakfast in the morning. I got there at 10AM, ordered my Ursula bagel at about 10:10AM, and was given my bagel at 10:25AM. At one point I was worried that, even though I had already paid, I would have to leave and run to class without my bagel. Not only did it take 25 minutes to get my bagel (I was nearly late to class...), the bagel was hard and difficult to eat. Admittedly, I will say that I think the store was understaffed. At one point there was a line of about 7 people and only 2 employees to make coffee and bagels, along with taking orders. However, I will definitely not be coming back when I'm under any kind of time limit less than 30min.

Venturing around the Ave, I stumbled upon Bean & Bagel with an empty belly for some simple breakfast options. The inside is relatively spacious in the back with one or two tables considering how small it looked from the outside. There is also a little coffee stand opening at the front of the store for when it gets too packed in the store or for coffee pick up! The service was a bit iffy; the ladies there seemed a bit reserved, agitated and rushed. It left me feeling a little like the same. I decided on an Ursula, which consisted of the Everything bagel with turkey, cream cheese, marionberry, swiss and lettuce. It didn't take long at all for me to receive my breakfast bagel, which is always nice; nobody wants to talk to a hangry gal! The Ursula bagel was quite delicious! I really enjoyed the combination of the sweetness of the jam with cream cheese along with the saltiness of the turkey and cheese! I would recommend trying the Ursula above anything else if you, like me, have trouble deciding on what to eat 99% of the time. It definitely filled me up! Case of hangry syndrome successfully closed. Cheers to the weekend!

The only good thing about this place is that their 12 oz. Americano is only about $2.50 which is a good deal these days, albeit it's far from the best espresso/coffee around. The service was abysmal though. I've never had to stand there and wait so long for somebody to even start making my drink. I took about 5 minutes from order before the girl even started to think about making my drink despite there being no line ahead of me, only regulars coming in after. In fact 3 bagel orders were finished from the time I ordered before I got my drink. Also immediately after I ordered my drink the prep guy asked the girl at the counter if he should make my drink to get it out of the way quickly as she was still busy making a bagel, she told him "No, I got this" and I had to honor of waiting another 8 minutes because she didn't want him to put down his lettuce for 30 seconds. This is what drove me nuts and made me a bit late for work because I only went in since I saw that there wasn't a line figuring it would be a quick stop. That they could have done the correct thing and expedite my order quickly but chose make me wait instead is pretty unacceptable to me. Especially considering how many years I've spent working in customer service myself. Here's a tip for your baristas: customers should come before lettuce... especially during the morning commuting hours. Also the bagels aren't made there, so I'm guessing that they're just purchased from Blazing bagels or a decent local spot and then marked up. Save some $$ and just buy em that the grocery store.

Just okay. I've had better bagels before for about the same price. Yelp wants me to write more than this, but I'm not sure what else to say. So I'm just continuing to write. Bagels are just not that great tasting, at least the bagel that goes with the veggie sandwich wasn't that good.

Bean & Bagel has some of the best espresso on the Ave. It just rocks the socks off Cafe Solistice. I just cannot put into words how awesome this place is and how good their espresso tastes. I tried my best italian soda here yesterday and boy was it gooood. The baristas are friendly, the prices are low, and it's right across the street from the UW campus. Just remember to explicitly ask for whipped cream if you want it.

The owners are local and have owned and operated the shop for decades, giving students and locals a relaxing and consistant place to start their morning or refuel during the day. Best bagel shop in all of Seattle!!!!. Amazing coffee. I have only had the best experiences with the staff here and I love the flow and energy of this place. I always either get the Veggie or Ursula bagel. I went into bean and bagel about 6 months ago for the first time. Got the Ursula with ham. And came back again a couple months later and they remembered my previous order!! I was blown away. All of the staff are extremely intelligent and I can tell they are up to big things in life. I'll be back!!!

Love the coffee, love the food, but the staff seem really unhappy. The person who made my breakfast sandwich threw it on the counter so hard that it slide apart all over in the bag, and the person who gave me my change just dropped it on the counter coins and all, then looked past me and said "next." I'd get it if I was the issue, but all I said was "hi!" No interaction after that, then watched others be treated the same. I get if people are having a bad day or if its something like a work environment problem, but it was just a bit too uncomfortable for me. I hope things improve, I'll try the place out again down the road maybe.

Good food, fast service, but terrible hours. I feel like weekend morning bagels are the best bagels, but Bean & Bagel is closed weekends. In general, their bagels are good, especially when toasted. Note, I am a bagel snob from the east coast, so I will be disappointed by any bagel here in Seattle. These are no New York bagels, but they're decent. Coffee is pretty gross, nearly undrinkable. I cannot speak to their espresso drinks, as I have never tried one. Warning: the place gets a little crazy mornings during rush hour. Thankfully, they turn the bagels out really fast.

Wow, have things changed here, and not for the better. I have been coming to Bean and Bagel for three years while in graduate school, and the amount of staff turnover (many of whom have worked here the entire time I've been a patron) in the past few months is not only appalling, but indicative that something is terribly wrong with the way management and oversight is being conducted here. While picking up my bagel today, I noticed a security camera pointed directly down at the employees. This is a new installation, and it's VERY evident that it is being used for employee surveillance instead of security. Having worked in an environment like this for 4 years, I am not at all surprised the staff is leaving in droves. Both Cinzia and Mikayla breathed so much life into this place, and made BnB the UW Anthropology Departments chosen coffee and lunch spot. My colleagues and I were in here sometimes every day, doing work, studying, and getting to know the staff well. With the amount of staff turnover here, I doubt that same level of community will be attainable. The obvious cameras also make me less willing to stay. I feel bad for the employees honestly; we all know what it's like having someone looking over your shoulder constantly. It's not a healthy way to work, even for a couple hours, let alone the entirety of every shift. All of the old managers have left, and from what I can tell, will not be replaced. Having managed a fleet of entry-level employees myself and having dealt with facilities management and scheduling oversight, I can attest to the toxicity of micromanagement. I can attest to the fact that trusting your employees with autonomy, paying them what they are worth, and respecting their work ethic makes for loyal employees who stay for years. We don't leave jobs, we leave managers, and I'm so very sorry to see so many of BnB's friendliest and personable staff leaving theirs. I hope management realizes that BnB's long time patrons who come here for community and who have bonded with these wonderful individuals will likely leave with them.

This is my favorite cafe in the U district! It has great, reasonably priced coffee and bagel sandwiches, and their vanilla chai is delicious. I've heard good things about the scones as well though I've never tried one. The staff is very friendly and helpful which makes for a pleasant atmosphere.

I absolutely love their bagels, but out of principle I do not want to visit them again. I was turned away in the morning just before they opened. I totally understand, but I was treated with utter disrespect by a woman with short black hair. Not happy.

Based on bagels alone I would have given this place 4 stars. The coffee is good, location good and the bagels are usually fresh and quality ingredients. My problem is with the little girl who on weekdays is the one toasting, spreading cream cheese, and otherwise preparing the bagels for customers. No only does she have s**t look on her face and refuses to smile, but when I say "thank you" and look her in the eye she replies "yeah". She doesn't even look up. This has happened twice now while this little stuck up girl means nothing to me, a little curtesy goes a long way with customer service. If you are the nice lady, who I assume is the owner, I recommend thinking twice about who you hire. Ever watch the show Portlandia? This place reminds me of the shop " Women and Women First". Too much estrogen, basic b**ch wear, and wool for me.

I've stopped in a bunch of times for coffee and bagels. I always think they are pretty delicious, but am inspired to review this morning based on the "basil and walnut" spread I ordered on my bagel this morning. It's so yummy . . . if a little messy, and I can't really work and eat it, but who cares. So I have to take an actual break rather than wolfing something down while answering 100 emails. Tragic! Service is sometimes a complaint here, and to tell you the truth, service is not that great anywhere on the Ave, but I don't really care that much about service as long as I get what I ordered. It's not the kind of place you'd want to sit down and enjoy yourself anyway. Just a grab and go kind of place. Re: the reviewers who said it's cash only -- that's sort of right, but they also take checks. I was low on cash, and it's the first time I have written a check for anything but my rent for YEARS!!! haha

It's close to my building on campus, so I come here pretty often for coffee. The coffee is decent- definitely a step up from the Tully's fare on campus. The service ranges from friendly to unprofessional. In particular, there are a couple of baristas who would have very detailed conversations about their personal lives in front of me, which was a bit uncomfortable. If you are a frequent customer, they offer 12 for the price of 10 prepay cards, which can be a pretty good deal. Also, all of the espresso drinks are the same price hot or cold, which makes the iced americanos an awesome deal.

This is a nice place to get a cheap breakfast or lunch in the u-district. I used to work close to Bean and Bagel and found myself frequently enjoying either the peanut butter and jelly bagel or a bagel with avocado. In addition, the coffee here is excellent, especially the iced vanilla latte. Bring cash with you though! They don't accept credit cards and the closest ATM is in the convenience store one door over. You have to pay a charge for that one.

The bagel-like product they offer was as fresh and tasty as if someone in a bad bagel shop in New York decided to ship the left over bagels to Seattle in a sail boat, first to Europe, then on a carriage to Turkey and over the silk road to China to be loaded on a ship and sent to, say Long Beach, where it was put on a bicycle and brought to Seattle a couple of years later. Haven't tried the coffee though. Maybe that's what keeps them in business.

I was scared away from B&B years ago when I received some attitude from the baristas. With so many places to get coffee, I didn't need to put up with that. I only started going back this past year or so. My coworkers and I get coffee every day and when the h-Bar is closed on campus, we pick the nearest place..so my earlier comment about "so many places to get coffee" is rather contradictory now, hmm? Anyhow, it was going pretty well, revisiting B&B. I even branched out and bought a tomato and cream cheese bagel (nom nom) a few times. But I mostly went in the morning to get my americano (I did get a chai once, but it was that sickly sweet Oregon Chai stuff, and not chai from a tea bag). Except the last time, I placed my order at the register and waited for the girl at the machine to actually make the drink (this is the order of things). Three people came in after us who knew the machine girl and she made their drinks ahead of me. Their "usuals"..snort. My coworkers already received their drinks and after waiting for several minutes were like: WTF did you order? I said: an americano, like always! I eventually got my drink and I haven't been back since. I refer back to my initial reaction of "there are so many other places for coffee" but now add "I don't NEED the coffee" and actually did w/o coffee all of spring break. :P I lived. Plus, the cash only thing is really inconvenient.

They will make your coffee the way you like it. They will make your bagel the way you like it (with peanut butter. With hummus. With sprouts. With lox... many many bagel accoutrements here). They will not charge you too much money, and you can now use your credit or debit card to pay them that money ($5 minimum). My favored darn-it-not-enough-time-to-eat-breakfast-at-home, light lunch and afternoon don't-want-to-do-work-so-I'll-procrastinate-by-getting-coffee place.

I don't know what people have against this place! The bagel was delicious, the coffee good, the service totally fine. I had a bagel with cream cheese and egg, which was yummy, and a coffee that came in a cute mug j picked out myself since it wasn't to go. I'll be back here- thought it was great!

The bean and bagels crushes it everyday. Their staff is super cool and fun, they've got great bagels / bagel sandwiches (try the Ursula) and awesome coffee and espresso. Definitely the place to go for breakfast, lunch or a caffeine boost! Also there's no b.s. It's just the real deal, basic coffee spot that everyone wants. Good prices, friendly staff, and amazing product!!

I tried to give B&B six stars but Yelp is broken so I will have to settle for five. First of all, if someone is so damn stupid they can't use a menu of toppings to construct their own sandwich they probably need to head down to Noah's Bagel for a premade sandwich. Second of all, the bagel scene in Seattle is terrible to begin with. The people complaining here about the food taste/quality are the same ones who microwave frozen Lender's (egg flavor, no doubt) and spritz on a generous portion of I Can't Believe Its Not Butter for a treat. People: THESE. ARE. LEGIT. BAGELS. If you don't like them, that's fine, but don't complain about a quality product. Just walk your ass down the street to Starbucks and open your cake hole for a 6 oz portion of carbohydrates (hold the flavor). The staff at B&B are amazing. Their current manager does an excellent job and deserves a raise. True, we all miss Zeke and Emily, but the management has done bang-up job replacing them. The coffee is superb. The temperature of an Americano is a bit hot, but at least it lasts all afternoon. In short: Stop by B&B if you want a good breakfast/lunch and a great coffee.

I feel torn on this one. I really like the bagels so I would give them a 4 (or even a 5 if using the rest of Seattle bagels as a comparison). But the service...more like a 3. Or a 2.5 depending on the day. They now accept credit cards although I actually liked that they were a holdout. Now it's just Aladdin's that won't take your card. Pretty soon there will be no need for cash at all...except wait, then how will be pay for hookers and blow? Just sayin'...think about it. But I digress. This is basically a fast, cheap place to get a bagel and some caffeine before bolting off to class or a meeting at UW. Not worth it's own trip but definitely convenient for us locals.

I have been having classes near the Bean and Bagel in Gould, so I go fairly often. First, I really like the people that work there. They are all super friendly and funny, and it's a huge plus that they have an outdoor window thing because it is really small inside and can get cramped. I usually get the cinnamon raisin bagel. One time I got a plain bagel with cream cheese to go and ended up taking off over half of the cheese because there was an ungodly amount. And I hate to waste-but I could not force myself to eat that much cream cheese. So that was no good. But I suppose you could ask them to take it easy on the cream cheese. Or you could just get the cinnamon raisin bagel because it is delicious. PS-good coffee too!

If you like service when you're ordering food, you might want to avoid this place. Both times I've been here, the people at the cashier were less than friendly. They seem like they really don't like their jobs, or are just tired of the same shit day in and day out. Either way, you're not getting any smiles with your order. Previously, I ordered an Americano which, although way hotter than it should have been, lasted me through the afternoon (and was still better than Starbucks, yay!). Today, I ordered an Onion bagel with Hummus & Lox. First, it came out to $6 -- which is totally not worth the cost. Fortunately, all their other bagels are in the $3-4 range, which isn't so bad. The lox was a peach color, and if you know anything about great lox it should be a bright reddish orange. So that was disappointing. And despite my bagel coming out a little burnt, it was perfect. And the hummus was amazing (I like mine to have a strong garlic-y taste)! It's great as a snack between classes, but honestly? I would've rather spent my money on something a little better on the Ave. It's not a total disappointment, however. TL;DR: 4/5 for the bagel , 2/5 for the service.

This place used to be great, the quality has significantly decreased in the past 6 months. Bad staffing, inefficiency, sloppily constructed bagels. Used to be my favorite but I've stopped going because it got so expensive.

Blueberry bagel was okay. Nothing bad, but nothing amazing. Soy lattes have been burnt all 3 times and too hot to hold or sip without burning my tongue. Service is hit or miss. Some people have been friendly. Others have ignored me while chatting to each other / friends, then taken my order and forgotten what it was.

Bean and Bagel is awesome. Best place to get a hot breakfast FAST - my favorite is a toasted plain bagel with cheddar cheese and ham, hot. This takes like 2min to make and it's amazeballs. Wash it down with coffee, and that's an instantly great start to the day, all for $5.66. Also the girls that work here are cute. :)

Very good bagels and the chai latte was great. We had the bagel with cream cheese and Lox. Fast service but not a place to sit and eat. Pretty busy and very small.

They have amazing coffee and great bagels! I would say that they do take a little long to get your stuff done but so worth the wait!

Hey, I like this place! My first time I here, I stumbled in around 2pm, dizzy from skipping lunch. I had a bagel with sundried tomato cream cheese, and it felt like fluffy, creamy heaven in my mouth. Then, I went before my class, held right across the street. Realizing that the cream cheese that I had before got its fluffy creamy goodness from gobules of fat, I went for the plain, low-fat cream cheese. Still tasty. Still probably fatty. Oh the fat. The bagels are probably some of the better ones I've had in Seattle, and the coffee is just strong enough for me. I wish that they had a little more selection of cream cheese - they have plain, low fat plain, and three savory cream cheeses, but no sweetness. Maybe get some plain with honey? Also, the music is super.

I realize I'm breaking all of the rules of journalism by writing a review of this place since one of my really good friends from college worked here for a while which means I became friends with most of the other staff and generally got the hook-ups if you know what I mean. But, no one called yelping journalism so rules be damned! Even if you didn't know someone that worked here, it wouldn't take too long before you would get to know them as well as all of the regulars. This place is pretty much a UW student's Cheers. The music is always good, they always have interesting art on the walls. Oh, the bagels. These sandwiches are some of the best in the city no matter what the dough. My fav would have to be the ham and Swiss with stone ground mustard on a toasted sesame bagel with lettuce and tomatoes. Yum.

Only two things bug me about B&B: 1. Cash only 2. The woman who I believe is the owner is a dick sometimes. Any bad attitudes I've ever had are from her, and the employees seem to not deal well either. EDIT: Credit card is now taken They make such better espresso than starbucks it aint funny, great lattes too. I have never cared for the bagels, to be honest. I had the onion bagel with jalepeno cream cheese and it was NOT good. On the whole, its a great coffee shop near the Phys/Astro building where I work. I get a doppio nearly every day after lunch, and have the honor of being in one of the polaroids on the coffee machine

Good bagels but be specific on how toasted and how much cream cheese, can be excessive on both. Drinks are good but service can be hit or miss. Please make your drinks as they are ordered!!! It sucks ordering first and having 5 other people get their drinks before you when you have the easiest drink!

Still waiting for the bagel gift order I placed December 13 to be sent to the recipient. The order was processed and paid for the same day and yet, I never got an email confirmation nor do they respond to my emails. I have emailed twice and now I have no other choice but to open an investigation via PayPal which is how this was paid for. My advice is to NOT order bagels from these folks. I always shop locally but I will not shop this local business again. Thanks for listening.

Once I found out they buy their bagels from the scrumptious Bagel Oasis, this place lost a lot of its appeal. I went to the source and let me tell you, Bagel Oasis is a lot better and worth the trip to Ravenna. The staff at Bean & Bagel can be downright rude or just neglectful. I once waited 5 minutes just to have someone acknowledge me. The only reason they do so well is their location. There is no reason to treat your customers badly!!!!!!

I decided to try the Bean and Bagel because it is near the University. I wanted to expand the selection of coffee shops I visit in the area, but maybe that isn't such a good idea. The mocha wasn't very good. The maple scone seemed to be at least a day old. There is not much seating, it's really meant as a kiosk, to grab coffee and go. Lastly, here's a hint for the staff, don't make fun of your customers - especially not in front of them like they aren't even standing there.
