12 Great Spots For Iced Coffee

"We’ve searched far and wide for the best iced Vietnamese coffee in the Bay, and The Beanery’s comes pretty damn close to perfection. It strikes just the right balance - it’s sweet but still strong - and a small will only cost you $2.90 (although we’d order it by the gallon if we could). Order ahead here or stop by to grab one to-go." - julia chen 1, lani conway

Stepping into the Beanery of Alameda is always a delight. From the moment you walk in, the aroma of superior coffee fills the air, promising a perfect cup every time. What truly sets this place apart, however, is not just the exceptional coffee. The service here is impressively fast, ensuring that even during the busiest hours, you're not kept waiting. The staff are genuinely friendly, making each visit feel personal and welcoming. It's the kind of place where the baristas remember your order after a few visits, which adds a lovely personal touch. The environment is another highlight – clean, cozy, and perfectly conducive to either a quick coffee stop or a longer, leisurely visit with friends or a good book. It's this combination of superb coffee, swift service, warm hospitality, and a spotless setting that makes the Beanery of Alameda a standout. A well-deserved five-star experience that I can't recommend highly enough!

There are several excellent coffee shops in Alameda, and the Beanery is certainly high up on the list! Their espresso drinks are great and consistent, food & pastry selections are varied, and the staff are some of the most sincere folks around. They are my go-to spot for a nice morning brew and occasional fresh beans ☕️

Google
The Beanery is one of my go-to spots for coffee! The coffee here is always smooth and delicious. I really enjoy their iced and hot oatmilk lattes. Great value for the quality and staff are friendly and efficient.

Google
Coleyworld approved! 💜 Best coffee in Alameda for sure! Been coming here for years for the Raspberry White Chocolate Mocha! They also have delicious and freshly made sandwiches! Love walking around the market to pick up a few things after a quick coffee and snack break!

François Rodigari

Google
One of the best coffe places in Alameda. The coffee is roasted on the premises. Also features a very good selection of pastries and made on the premises sandwiches. Try the Mediterranean sampler featuring house made hummus. Big enough to share.

Google
Best coffee spot in Alameda.Consistent quality even if they are busy. Great service and delicious food ❤️Iced vietnamese for the occ treat! ❤️Breakfast sandwiches ❤️Medium roast blend 👎the desserts are a skip for me

Google
Breakfast panini is made to order and hot, not always the case so appreciated. The order taker was slightly impatient as this is my first time here and I don’t know this is customizable and didn’t see the options posted. I just said yea to the first 3 things she listed to make it easy: egg, bacon, spinach. It came with provolone cheese.bread was fresh and crusty but no taste and sandwich is fine. Large drip coffee is $3.25 for 20oz and I got dark toast - good. Fine option if you are in the area. Lots of locals here.

Google
This is a popular place and it’s no wonder! I have been buy their medium roast house blend coffee by the pound for years. It robust, smooth and delicious. I make my coffee in a percolator and it’s the best. Everything I’ve tried from their baked goods sandwiches has been very good. I mostly go there just for the coffee, however. The staff and service has always been consistent and courteous. I always recommend The Beanery coffee to all my friends.

Yelp
Somehow everything is good here. The coffee, the smoothies, the pastries, the sandwiches... These may actually be some of the best sandwiches in Alameda. Remember those delicious turkey sandwiches the Costco food court used to have? Well, The Beanery's turkey panini is almost exactly that, and just as good.

Yelp
The SF bagel on everything. The seasoning on the everything bagel was a little off and a little bit. It was burn a bit. Good amount of cream cheese (plain) Tomatoes and bacon. I enjoyed the touch of the pepper seasoning. Tomatoes were very fresh and cold. Overall it blended well and tasted great for a snack. Vibe is a bit off since it's inside a grocery store. Complimentary water.

Yelp
Great cafe nestled in the Alameda Marketplace. I like to work here from time to time since they have a nice amount of tables Does get a little noisy but I just pop in headphones. They close at 3 but I left about 20 minutes after so it was nice they didn't kick everyone out

Yelp
My family loves coming to The Beanery, especially for their spicy chicken panini! It's such a perfect lunch (or anytime) meal. The spicy sauce is really flavorful and not too spicy. The chicken is well cooked and not too dry. And the panini is perfectly toasted. I've gotten coffee from here as well and have never been disappointed. Most recently I also got an Italian soda. It was a little sweet for me so next time I'll ask for less syrup. But I still really liked it! They have SO many flavors available, I almost didn't know which to go with. If you need somewhere to start, you can't go wrong with orange (it's basically just an orange soda). Parking in the lot can be tough - there are plenty of spaces but it is shared with all the other businesses and restaurants. I would recommend parking on the street or in the neighborhood nearby as The Beanery is on the farther end of the market, away from the lot. They've got lots of tables, both inside and outside, if you plan to stay awhile. I even noticed a lot of people with their laptops, getting some work done. The cafe is accessible on its own from the outside but you can also get there by going through the market.

Yelp
The Matcha iced latte with strawberry is very good my co worker recommended it to me. And the people at the show are really nice, great customer service

Yelp
We typically hit this place when we are heading out of town and I didn't get my fix at home. (Tap the arm). There have been a few times we hung out and got some food but mostly a grab and go. The service is quick. The other plus point for us grab and goers is the parking. Easily can get street parking for a quick in and out. (Not going there). As a coffee place total 4.

Yelp
Service was ok. The cashier was very nice but the barista could've actually filled my latte, or at least offered . Pecan bar is delicious Crème brûlée bar is ok , the crust was soggy and something in it was grainy. Tasted like flour? My latte was very light when i picked it up, I told the barista and she assured me it was full... it had about 1in of foam... sooo NO, it was not full. However it was a very good Latte. They have good espresso. They offer breakfast and lunch options. Would definitely come back to try other menu favorites.

Yelp
Walked by and saw the cafe. It was a Friday morning at 8 am. Staff seems mute, not overly friendly. Ordered a black coffee, tasted dirty and too hot and a ham & cheese croissant, a little salty. Got my coffee right away, waited for my # to be called, after 10 mins I walked up and they pointed to the left side entrance for me to pick it up. A couple of fly's in the cafe area, not really impressing.
google avatar

Pauline C.

Yelp
I had the vietnamese coffee and lox bagel. The vietnamese coffee didn't taste as strong compared to the usual. It was still good and kept me awake for a while. As for the bagel, I found it a bit too firm. This place isn't big, but there's a good amount of outlets which make it nice for studying.
google avatar

Darlene E.

Yelp
I've been going here for years and have ordered everything on the menu at one time or another. My go-to's are the lox bagel, petite egg sandwich, organic veggie sandwich, or the sampler with hummus. To drink, I usually get a double latte with oat milk and vanilla. Today I had the Thai iced tea with oat milk. I have never, ever had a bad drink or incomplete food here, and that is quite impressive since I have also worked as a barista and sandwich maker. No matter who makes your drink or food, it will always come out perfect. I love spending my money here.

Yelp
Cute little spit inside a food hall. People love their coffee cause the line was quite long! We also got food which were some bagels and they were pretty yummy after our little morning walk over the bridge. Nice area so definitely take the food on the go and explore the city or just have a nice little sidewalk patio meal!

Yelp
Nice community cafe, people of all ages come to this cafe to hang out or work (there are lots of outlets). It's your classic American cafe, with coffee beans incorporated in the table, dark wood furniture, warm colors, and cozy art on the walls. You can tell it's been around for a while. My friend and I had the Vietnamese coffee, which was sweet and although I agree with other reviews that it's not as strong as other Vietnamese coffees I'm used to having it's still a good amount of caffeine especially since we ordered a large! I was very pleasantly surprised to see that this cafe is able to keep their prices down. Come here for an affordable latte! Plus they've got plenty of sandwich items too! It's inside of a market area so is a lot of other eateries and grocery shopping you can do while you're there. We saw the tea shop next door start to set up for their anniversary celebration, so it was cute to see the tight knit community here.

Yelp
First Time Visit/Review: I liked my iced Chai Latte with Oat milk but I would've liked it spicier even if I specified with the order taker. The Bacon Brie Egg Bite Sandwich was delicious -- must get. Crispy English Muffin with fresh egg & bacon baked together. The decor in the cafe was like a donut shop with glass display cases showing the pastries, bagels, scones etc that they had to offer with a menu board posted up in the back. I loved that there were enough individual tables and chairs for studying with electrical plugs for laptops. The tables were wooden glass framed with fresh coffee beans encased in for appropriate decor which was cute. Definitely will revisit! Please try out the Beanery!

Yelp
Coffee good enough. Not High Wire but more seating and food offers. Staff helpful. Adjacent to complete market that has everything orgaanic.

Yelp
This review is long overdue! My husband and I have been customers of the Beanery since they opened their doors in Alameda, and when we were residents on the island. We eventually relocated to Oakland five years ago, yet still find ourselves going to Alameda just for our coffee. That's how good they are. The taste is hard to replace or replicate, whether it's in the Bay Area or elsewhere. The Beanery is more than coffee for us - it is a weekly ritual of quality time, great coffee, a delicious bite to eat, and community. We sit and have our breakfast once a week and get to see other regulars gather as well. The staff is friendly and kind and I love seeing the various art pieces on the wall! Thank you, Beanery!

Leo S.

Yelp
Driving to Alameda feels like walking through all seven layers of Dante's Inferno; however, seeing the Beanery is like a beacon of hope on the horizon. The entire drive, I feel surrounded with off brand coffee places. Starbucks, Peet's, Joe's coffee, all secondhand dilapidated temples that serve coffee in a false name. The Beanery is a pillar of light that shines through the darkness of the Island and I would recommend this temple for any weary travelers. Thank you The Beanery, I will come again. Sincerely yours.

Yelp
I made an impromptu stop at The Market Place and decided to give The Beanery a try for my morning coffee. The Beanery roast their own coffee and has long been established in the Bay Area. My Cortado was done well, roast was medium on the coffee which made for a great flavor. My husband got the Spicy chicken panini and was sorely disappointed, he called it a "sloppy Joe." I ordered the Avocado bagel in an everything bagel. Overall, things were good- nothing that stood out as unique or special. The baristas were full of early morning smiles and friendly, so that was nice service. There were tables inside and outside and the market store was wonderful.

Yelp
Hubby has been telling me about The Beanery for such a long time and he was finally able to take me to go try it! I was so excited to finally get to go try this place as I see it every time we drive by. Upon arriving there wasn't many customers, so we were able to get our order in and waited. Everything on their menu looked amazing! I ended up getting a small iced mocha and Hubby got a medium Vietnamese iced coffee. He also ordered me a croissant since I have been craving for it for quite a long time. I was a bit afraid of how my drink would taste, as I have had mocha that tasted disgusting, but the iced mocha here was delicious! The Vietnamese iced coffee was a bit on the sweeter side, but it wasn't bad. I was a little disappointed with the croissant, as it was hard, and even after I had heated it up, it wasn't what I was craving for. Overall, I enjoyed my drink and will be looking forward to coming back to try other items!

Yelp
Friendly neighborhood spot that is usually busy but speedy! Sandwiches are great and I do enjoy an occasional matcha chai latte. Good coffee too!

Yelp
I've been eating at The Beanery for years now. They deserve a good quality review for all the effort the owner puts into ensuring we get high quality food, coffee and service. They make coffee any way you like; rich and delicious. They make tasty breakfast sandwiches and have a verity of fresh pastries. They have always been happy to make our order just the way we prefer. The Beanery has become my reliable go-to cafe for relaxing, working on the old laptop or meeting with a friend. Keep those standards high!

Yelp
I love everything about this place from its eclectic clientele, to the drinks that never let you down, the super pleasant and efficient staff and the delicious pastry and other cakes on offer. My go to is a 20oz London Fog which is always perfectly proportioned and the apricot oat cake that is just perfect. Seating is back to being of plenty indoor , outdoor street side and even a few tables within the market place. The music is there but never too much just enough to hum along.

Yelp
Very upsetting this morning. I spend a lot of money at this place on a weekly basis. But today they got it very wrong and I'm quite upset!!! I usually order my coffee and sometimes a sandwich online through GrubHub. I'm rushing for work and I pick up my drink and my sandwich. As I'm exiting the door, I realize there is whipped cream on my drink. I start to double back, but I do not have time. Figured I just go ahead and scrape it off when I get to the office. That was upsetting. As hungry as I was, I wanted to take a bite of my sandwich. And realized there was an off taste. There was some sort of dressing on my sandwich! As you can see in my order, I requested no whip cream, an extra shot of espresso, no dressing, aïoli, or mayo on my sandwich. I got some dressing up some sort! Totally inedible. I don't like dressing on my sandwiches. Someone else may like it, but I don't! I get to the office to scrape off the melting whip cream. I taste my coffee. There's no extra shot of espresso that I ordered! Reading is fundamenta!. I can't believe everything is blatantly instructed and everything was wrong at the same time. Not the best way to start a Monday morning. Now I'm hungry and can I get my coffee. I had to give this away. I didn't have a heart to throw it away. please do better Beanery!!

Yelp
I wanted to write a special post about the Spicy Chicken Panini. In general, sandwiches are my favorite thing to eat, so I have a high bar. I never thought I would steer far from my traditional east coast Italian bias, but Beanery has totally blown my mind. The Spicy Chicken Sandwich at Beanery is my favorite sandwich in the Bay Area. Period. I usually get it with an add-on of avocado, but it is great straight up. I have now had it about a dozen times and have been researching how to replicate something similar at home. Anyone would love this sandwich. Though it is probably simple and common to the family that runs the Beanery, I was completely ignorant of Lebanese/Palestinian 7 Spice and have since learned a lot about it. I am grateful to have discovered it. I finally found somewhere online to get it. The sandwich is pretty simple - I'm guessing they slow cook the chicken with a lot of 7 spice, onions, garlic, tomato and peppers. Perhaps they separate the peppers etc at the end to make a sorta pepper spread pesto. Then it seems to be blended in a mayo and cheese before melted in the panini press. In some sense it is actually similar to a a sandwich based around a good Mexican chipotle mayo. There is just something about the 7 spice that gives it a distinctive kick - strong, but not quite too much. I have yet to find a place that does a sandwich quite like this. It is the perfect simple spicy chicken. I really think most anyone would love it. If you have not tried it, please do.

Yelp
I don't come here much but I enjoy the variety of beverages and the fresh baked goods. My go to is their London Fog latte and their blueberry bagel. Plenty of seating since it's part of the Marketplace and I always feel good about supporting a local coffee shop.

Susanne L.

Yelp
Never happened before, but was served bitter decaf coffee and cold pumpkin bread wrapped in plastic. Really needed some love today. No smile from this server!
google avatar

Kristi W.

Yelp
Such a great spot for coffee, ice cream and a cool drink in the summer! So friendly and tasty every time! My kids love the sorbet and the Huckleberry ice cream is delish!

Leina N.

Yelp
I wouldn't go here for coffee since a lot of their drinks seem watered down and not as strong as the Vietnamese coffee I'm used to drinking daily lol. But their sandwiches always hit and this is why this place is usually my go to when I crave a good breakfast sandwich. Also, their customer service could be a bit better.
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
I always come here when I need coffee and don't feel like talking to anyone. They do online ordering, you can customize your drink however you want, there's so many options to do so. Plus you can get a breakfast sandwich. Fast and convenient for me, I like.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
The Beanery makes me want to live in Alameda. The service is consistently good. I'm in love with the Lavender Latte. When I want to break my diet, I order the spinach feta croissant. I try to go any time I'm in Alameda.
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
Absolutely the business! Went here on break today and got a Pumpkin Spiced Latte and an Avocado Turkey sandwich! First off the coffee was definitely organic in the best way imaginable! The coffee was absolutely delicious. The Pumpkin flavor was great and the coffee beans used were flavorful. Definitely one of the best coffees I've had in a while. The sandwich was one of the best Avocado Turkey sandwiches I've had. And I've had many! It was perfect with the fresh creamy Avocado and the crisp mixed greens, sprouts and organic tomatoes. The whole wheat bread was great and was toasted perfectly where it didn't get soggy and held it's integrity. It was a great meal to say the least. Would I come here from the South Bay? Absofrigginlutely! A solid 5 stars and am definitely going to be a regular here!
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
I found myself at The Beanery one early morning before heading to a long work shift. I really appreciate that it opens quite early and has a set space for people to work at and enjoy their morning coffee. The drinks here come at a fair price for high quality. While there isn't a lot designated to park at, you can find parking along the streets when it isn't a big commute hour. For those who enjoy things with a little kick, I'd recommend trying the Mayan mocha, which has a some spiciness to it. My current seasonal favorite is the peppermint mocha, mainly because it's not as sweet as most places make. Food wise, I LOVE their spicy chicken panini. It's so flavorful! Whenever I'm on the go though, I usually get their almond croissant, which is soft and tasty and best served heated!
google avatar

Wilmer A.

Yelp
Scrumptious breakfast sandwiches plus a large variety of pastries & bagels. You can even pre-order via phone . Friendly staff always smiling and having fun. And if you're looking for a place to work... they have plenty of USB chargers and 120VAC outlets along the wall seating! Highly recommended if you're in Alameda or stopping by. Try their Pirates Matcha Chai Latte - HELLA GOOD!
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places on the island: -for a cup of drip coffee -organic fair trade options -quick breakfast/midday options -easy Eat24 pick up -efficient and friendly service -frequent buyer program -great spot for a chat, meeting or work There's a reason why there are lines all morning here.
google avatar

Anya H.

Yelp
What does The Beanery NOT have. I love this place and wish it was closer to me. I love their breakfast goods, pastries, and coffee. I recently got a breakfast sandwich with ham, egg, on a croissant and added tomato. SO good. And Vietnamese coffee. Iced mocha. Banana Bread, Zuchini bread! They have so much more I haven't tried and want. There are a few spots to sit outside (socially distant) and enjoy yourself. Next time I want to try and order ahead to avoid the lines.

Miriam C.

Yelp
They're always very kind and respectful. Their coffee is very tasty and they have organic water based beans. Unfortunately they have no organic oat milk, despite being next to the organic public market, so we go to high wire more.
google avatar

Mel C.

Yelp
Wow. My mom and I ordered two sandwiches (veggie on baguette and turkey avocado on italian roll). They were so delicious we had to write a review. We also ordered two yummy thai teas with oat mylk and a carrot cake. We will definitely be back. :)

Maribel J.

Yelp
Poor customer service! Avoid this place! Over priced and staff is rude. Will not be coming back!
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
My favorite coffee, great food, and very friendly service. Long lines that move very quickly.

Benessa F.

Yelp
Love this place! My breakfast sandwich was a bit weird to eat this time though. Flavor was good it's just the clump of eggs that threw me off
google avatar

Rana A.

Yelp
Iv'e been coming here off and on for the last 10 years. Over the course of the pandemic not as much (for obvious reasons). Not sure if there was a change in ownership (as the staff are all very new to me) but the customer service is completely lacking now. All in all the quality of food has stayed the same but just general niceties, patience and overall friendly attitude has gone away. Which is sad, as that's what adds to the islands charm.
google avatar

Yelp
The Beanery Coffee House is conveniently located in the Alameda Marketplace right next to Alameda Natural Grocery. They use Organic Fair Trade Certified Coffee. For herbal teas they have an assortment of Numi teas & Stash teas. I have enjoyed Rooibos here by the cup or even shared a pot w/ a friend before. Besides hot drinks they have bagels, cold sandwiches, & hot sandwiches. They also have a Mediterranean Sampler that is vegan for $8.25 that my friend once ordered that looked good. I have enjoyed their Vegan Zucchini Carrot Bread that is $2.50. They also have Gluten-free/vegan Chocolate Chip & Oatmeal Raisin Klippy's cookies for $3 each. The tables indoors feature coffee beans below the glass that add a nice touch. The Beanery is a popular place & inside can get crowded yet luckily there is also outdoor seating. One of the greatest things about the Beanery is that it is connected to the lovely Alameda Natural Grocery store you can conveniently pick up some groceries after enjoying tea or coffee. The Beanery hours are: M-F 5:45am to 7pm Sat 6:30am to 7pm Sun 7am to 5pm

Hannah B.

Yelp
A classic Alameda coffee and food joint. Great coffee drinks, assortment of desserts/ pastries as well as savory sandwiches for breakfast/ lunch. Counter service with some cafe tables and a few seats outdoors.

Yelp
I tried this place 3 days ago and I haven't stopped coming back since. I enjoy the morning walk with my dogs a lot more after a rewarding latte . It gets busy so go earlier in the morning if you're in a rush . Amazing breakfast sandwiches , awesome espresso, and attentive staff who are super friendly! Thanks for my cup of Joe
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
Great little place to go for a morning latte! The staff were kind and very quick. I ordered a white mocha with oat milk. It was the perfect temperature and had a nice foam on top. They had so many syrups to choose from which was cool to see!
google avatar

Lisa O.

Yelp
I really love the food here (special mention for the breakfast sandwiches and the jambon beurre sandwiches). The staff has always been very lovely, but the coffee is a bit inconsistent in quality, and it's not the speediest operation. A leisurely pace and an emphasize on quality prep can be a beautiful thing in a nice coffee place, so I have mixed feelings about this, but I sometimes just want to grab a latte on my way off the island, and The Beanery can sometimes take a while. Overall, I'm a fan, but it's a little uneven sometimes.

G C.

Yelp
The barista made this beautiful design on my oatmilk, 1/2 sweet mocha today. What an artist. I love their coffee drinks and their prices are so competitive.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
Their house espresso is fantastic!! Every person I have steered to The Beanery for espresso based drinks have been hooked. I've been so disappointed with all these fancy hipster overpriced coffee joints in the Bay Area like blue bottle, four barrel, and saint franks, etc...usually the milk seems to overpower the espresso and you don't get that aroma and rich espresso taste...all you taste is milk and the drink turns out lukewarm. I say to myself "wow, that small lackluster gulp was $6.75?!" Well, after ordering 30 times here, I can confidently say that if you like coffee, you will appreciate what they do so well here and you'll also be pleasantly surprised that their prices are reasonable. Their iced oat milk or soy milk lattes actually have foam that lingers to the last sip. It's an ACTUAL iced latte, not just cold milk with espresso poured on top. Their extra hot lattes are so aromatic and smooth for a cold day. Their sandwiches are also great. Get the Veggie organic on the Italian roll or Baguette. If you get it on the Italian roll you'll notice they pack in sooooo much veggies, avocado, along with cheese and that delicious house dressing it's like having a bowl of mixed green salad on the side. I love it! It is so great to see a business take their coffee and food offerings so seriously and producing better than high end restaurant quality for such a reasonable cost. Really, how many "fancy" Bay Area/SF places have I ordered sandwiches and coffee at only to receive vending machine quality skimpy and messy food orders for $14 and stale tasting poor quality roasts for $6+ small cup?? No more. Thank you Beanery team , please keep up the good hard work!! I'll see you tomorrow :)
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
Coffee is great! They serve both hot and cold coffee. The beauty of this café is it's right near a market store that has food available like soups, Mediterranean style salads, and sushi if you're not in the mood for pastries/sandwiches/bagel-bagel sandwiches. I ordered a caramel latte, it was a beauty!! Both with taste and the visuals were amazing! The indoor seating area is great, but the outdoor seating area is a slight bummer. Tables are outside, and there is no form of heat if you choose to sit out on a cold day, while the indoor area is packed. Outdoor seating area is available, but looks neglected.(reason for one star deduction) I say this café is more grab-and-go; the neighborhood is also safe, the employees at this café are amazing, and take pride for their quality of service.

Yelp
My favorite cafe in Alameda! The food is delicious, I love their breakfast sandwiches, paninis, and lunch plates. Their beverages are high quality and the service is really friendly. There is always a long line in the morning, but that can be bypassed by ordering through Yelp. My husband and I place and pay for our orders after we drop our kids off at school and then walk right in to pick up our order which is always ready when we arrive. Easy peasy!
