Bear Flag Fish Co. - Review - Newport Beach - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"As the sailboat out front flying a string of nautical flags suggests, Bear Flag takes seafood seriously. This casual spot has two locations in Newport Beach—one by Lido Marina Village, another in Crystal Cove. Both serve stellar fish that tastes like it was swimming just a few hours ago (and honestly, probably was). The fresh poke here pops, so grab a pound of it from the counter with some chips to start. The tacos and burritos are our go-to for something more substantial, with a long list of fillings to pick from, like black cod, halibut, snapper, octopus, and shrimp." - Cathy Park

9 Best Day Trips from Los Angeles | Condé Nast Traveler

"This delightfully nautical modern fish shack is the fast casual concept every beach town should have. It's a mix of families enjoying an after school special, surfers grinding after a paddle out, and beachcombers looking for a taste of chef-fisherman Thomas Carson's catch of the day. This is definitely some of the best poke on the mainland. Don't skip the ahi or salmon. They have some excellent margs on menu too, making for the perfect pairing for your fish taco or burrito." - Maxwell Williams, Krista Simmons

Google
Delicious food! And reasonable prices with large portions. It’s not a traditional restaurant atmosphere — more of a fish market vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. Counter service, with food brought to your table. I got the large fish plate and my wife got the small. We also shared a calamari plate. We both were stuffed. Personally, I did not feel like the portion size for the calamari was large enough for the price, but the main courses we ordered more than made up for it. I highly recommend this spot for delicious seafood with a great selection at reasonable prices. If I were local, I’d definitely be back.

Google
I had the bear flag taco which was ok (plain), the yellowtail taco which was good, caterpillar roll which was good and Smokey bear cocktail which was good. I didn’t taste anything excellent, but staff are friendly. Prices are what you expect for seafood. Very popular place so crowded but surprisingly the wait in line is not too long and there’s usually a few tables open, even on Sat afternoon. There’s an outdoor patio area with umbrellas.

Chris Black

Google
10/10 would recommend, but you knew that already. We got guac with the poke and that was a great combo. Also upgraded to the premium fish in the burrito and I’d highly recommend that if you can.

Veronika Hong

Google
The food is amazing! It is also a fish market so you can get fresh seafood. They have great food and drinks. I highly recommend getting the calamari.

Google
Good, not great. The side of veggies was very bland and obviously not sautéed, which is what I asked for. I got the bluefin tuna, which was good, but again not great. However the poke and chips were fantastic. Also fun having Asahi on tap

Google
Wow... disappointing. We went here for my husbands birthday and this could be the worst sushi we've eaten and we even ate sushi in grand junction Colorado so we've had bad sushi. Obviously this is a fish restaurant but I just figured the sushi would be edible?! The roll was the only thing we got that was good (la bamba roll). Everything else (salmon plate, ono burrito, salmon nigiri and the bluefin tuna) was plain, nothing above standard and the sushi was almost inedible. Would highly NOT recommend. Oh also it took an hour to get our food.

Lianna Rodriguez

Google
Best poke I ever had. Absolutely delicious and fresh. Love the ambiance too.

Google
Personally didn’t have a bad experience for it being my first visit here. Everything ordered tasted very good, especially that bear flag burrito. Spot on. The way the fish was cooked was very delicious, prob the only kind of way im only going to eat fish now. However, the salmon wasn’t as tender or smooth tasting as I hoped. It was still good nonetheless. Service was efficient. Atmosphere was semi spacious. Only down side here is parking. Though they do have a lot where it’s free for customers who’s spending in the same mall.

Yelp
Food is always insanely good! It is a little expensive but you're getting fish/sushi on the beach, so it's kind of expected. Their sauce they give you with every meal is amazing. We have to come here every time we're in HB! The seating has awesome views of the ocean. You just have to pray there's actually a table available. It's always super crowded but 100% worth it.

Yelp
I've been eating at Bear Flag for years. I love their fish tacos. During my last visit last night, the restaurant was busy, and they accidentally left the Tommy sauce off our tacos. No big deal, but when I asked for the missing sauce, I was told I'd need to purchase it, even after explaining it had been mistakenly left off of our tacos to begin with. I asked them to take a look themselves, and they said, "That's okay, we believe you," but still refused to provide it. They said it is against their policy. It took speaking with a kind and helpful server (the only reason this isn't a one-star review) to finally get what should have been there in the first place. I don't mind spending $75 for my wife and I to get two tacos and a drink each, but I shouldn't have to argue over a missing component of the dish. I hope management reconsiders this rigid "no exceptions" policy--it just doesn't match the quality of food or the prices they charge.

Yelp
We have been coming here for nearly 8 years and have always enjoyed their famous seafood and poke. Honestly, one of the best gems of Newport and it had always been a great place to bring friends and family from out of town. Unfortunately help and employees these days with good customer service come few and far in between. We were there this past weekend, again, taking out of town family to one of our favorite spots and let's just say there were more strikes than wins. I went up to the counter to order a to go burrito for my wife because this is her absolute favorite place. I stood there, with 2 front cashiers, open, just staring back at me. No "how can I help you" or "I got you" or "over here I can take your order." They two cashiers simply stared at my blankly and expected me to pick one of them. I guess I choose the wrong one, because I went over to the cashier to my left and it was a young guy with curly brown hair and no smile for days. Welp, still no "how can I help you" or anything close. I went up and had an awkward 5 seconds of silence before he blurted out "so...what do you want?" At this point I just wanted my burrito and go so I ordered a MIXED POKE BURRITO AND A SIDE OF CHIPS TO GO. Didn't confirm my order, just punched in the buttons and then told me how much I owed and said "They'll call out your name when it's ready." Seriously, no smile, no thank you for coming, just a bothered, angsty young gun who really seemed like he doesn't care for his job. Well, I guess I know now why he didn't repeat my order...he didn't even get it right. Mind you, we live a good 40 minutes away from Bear Flag, and it is a huge treat for us and the family to stop in. I brought home the burrito for my wife....and lo behold, NOT a mixed poke burrito, just a grilled fish burrito that he punched in. This is unacceptable; this is actually pretty maddening because we paid for a service and it definitely did not deliver. This tracks with multiple recent reviews. TERRIBLE SERVICE. RUDE WORKERS. So I guess I am not surprised this happend to me. The latest 3 reviews say the same thing. For reference, we were there on Sunday, July 7th, and I ordered my burrito at around 2pm; employee was manning the cashier, young 20 something guy with brown curly hair. So managers/pr/social media do whatever you please, but please teach your staff to DO BETTER.

Yelp
Good spot to get your poke fix. The line was out the door, it took about 15 minutes after placing my order. The place was pretty packed, but they have lots of seating outside. Ordered the Bear Flag Burrito. It was light and could have used more sauce and seasoning, honestly prefer chipotle but overall a decent burrito. Got half pound of salmon poke for about $12 - they also see 1/4 for about $6. Large cuts of fish! The sauce was very simple, personally prefer a spicy mayo but I really loved the quality and would definitely come back and order this again. I liked how they gave chips too!

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for a while now so I'm glad I finally tried it. We got 1/2lb of both salmon and ahi tuna poke. Both were fresh and delicious but I preferred the tuna poke. Tortilla chips are already included with poke orders but we decided to also get a side of white rice. The rice added flavor and texture to the chip with poke. Also, our first impression after seeing the container portion was to doubt whether it would be filling but it definitely was! There was a long line we got there but it moved quickly and we received our order even quicker. The dine in ambience also looks amazing. We decided to place our order to go but will be back for dine in.

Yelp
I am so confused by the amount of hype this place has. There is simply a lack of salt in all of our dishes. So very bland! We came at open, so we were one of the first ones there. It took about 20-30 minutes to get us poke, two tacos, and a guppy plate. There is minimal inside seating and more seating outside. Thank goodness I only got a quarter pound of the ahi poke and salmon poke to try. BTW it comes with a bag of chips each. I was so disappointed by this, as this was the one I was looking forward to the most. The only thing that was salted was the chips. The fish itself was fine? But the seasoning was nonexistent. The two fish tacos that we got were so bland as well. I mean sure, add more of their many sauces to add flavor. But why do we have to do that to enjoy the tacos? Lastly, the guppy plate. Hey, the vegetables were really seasoned, but the fish was super bland (which is fine in this case for a kids plate)! To preface: at the time of eating it fresh my toddler was already fussy. So even eating this he had some sort of VISCERAL reaction to the fish. I didn't think much of it, so I boxed it up to eat at home. Upon reheating it again, he had the SAME reaction. Wondering why, I tried his section of the fish and WOW it was SO SPICY. Like... REALLY SPICY, but only a small section of the fish. I had my husband double check this to make sure and he agreed. Yeah so, no thanks. I have had so much better poke elsewhere.

Raul L.

Yelp
Was craving poke and stopped by this spot with my friend. I got half & half tuna and salmon. The spicy sauce was 10/10. It's a little bit on the higher end $$$ price wise for poke but worth every cent
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
This place has the best poke bowls. The parking can be a little tricky if it's a busy Saturday, but other than that, it's fairly easy to get to. This is the type of place that you order at the front and go sit down. They keep it relatively clean with a kind of casual beachy sailor vibe indoors.
google avatar

Narla L.

Yelp
Fresh poke, fast service, and friendly staff! I ordered half a pound of salmon poke with a side of rice, and everything tasted incredibly fresh and flavorful. The portion was just right. I also tried their fish taco, and it was absolutely delicious -- crisp, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Great spot for a quick and satisfying meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Suuuuuuuuper long line, but i was in the mood to wander, so thought id do something i NEVER do, and wait. The prices are fair and the decor very cute. Light beachy vibe. Fun spot with fresh fish and great mexican and sushi menu. Soooo California! I just ordered the poke which was premade (so/so). Still took 20 min from ordering to delivery at the table. I had to go up and ask. They lost my order. Oye. Thank goodness i had a skinny margarita

Yelp
I am in love with Bear flag's food, always fresh and delicious. Ive been going to both locations for years and the food doesn't disappoint! I love their salmon bear flag burritos, and I substitute cucumbers for beans. Their ceviche and ahi tuna is a great choice for take out! This time we took our dog and sat in the patio which is very nice and dog friendly, although the restaurant (inside) only allows service dogs.
google avatar

Karlee B.

Yelp
Their fish plates are one of my favorites now! The red snapper always has the best bite and flavor and cooked to perfection. Their sides are always fresh and substantial. The service is quick and I appreciate them delivering your plates to your table.

Yelp
Came here yesterday to order food to go. We ordered the Ahi and salmon poke, two burritos and grilled artichoke. Cashier said the grilled artichoke was popular and was very good. When I opened up the container for the artichoke it smelled great, but unfortunately it was quite undercooked and was completely inedible. As I was peeling off some leaves, I found a dead bug that looked like a green worm. Gross!! There goes my $11.00. What a waste of money!! The poke was good and the burritos were ok. I don't think I will be returning anytime soon.

Yelp
Simple, fresh, efficient, and fast. That describes everything at Bear Flag Fish. Great restaurant to go to for a leisurely day around Lido Village.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
In a beautiful location with great seafood offerings, Bear Flag doesn't miss. The line can get long but definitely serves a testament to their popularity. We waited about 10-15 minutes for lunch this past Sunday. My go-to is their poke bowl, where the cucumbers and watermelon radish are neatly sliced. My fave topping that you don't see at many poke places is the pickled carrot. The spicy sauce on the fish is a great choice along with the chili crunch! Parking wasn't terrible either - we were able to find a spot in the adjacent lot. If you park in the structure I believe they will validate! This is a summer must.
google avatar

Shiny C.

Yelp
Got a 1/2 lb of tuna and 1/2 lb of salmon poke after a day of walking around Lido Marina Village and it was such a great meal. The poke comes with chips and the crunchiness pairs with the fresh fish so well. The poke is so flavorful and I could probably finish one pound by myself if I wanted to. The area where this restaurant is located is so nice and the vibes are so much better when the weather is warm and sunny.
google avatar

Stephanie E.

Yelp
Probably one of the best poke spots I've had. My husband said this was one of the best fish burritos he's ever eaten. Clean interior. Beautiful exterior to sit outside and enjoy the food. The staff was very, very helpful and the service was really quick. They even sell fish for you to take home which we also wanted to do but we had a long day so we didn't want the fish to sit in the car. Definitely going back.
google avatar

Alysa C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to get fresh poke! Ordering is quick and convenient, making it an ideal stop for any beach day. I always enjoy coming here with friends and family to enjoy their food. I definitely prefer their poke and chips over their poke bowls, but still recommend everyone try their stuff out to see what they like. Service is always friendly and helpful!
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Bear Flag is one of my go-to spots. We love the Ahi poke. We always get a poke bowl (1/2 lb ahi), 1/2 lb ahi poke, and a 12 oz clam chowder. Poke bowl - they use the same ahi as when you buy it a la carts. Decent portion size, fresh toppings. We like 1/2 rice, 1/2 greens. Ahi poke - good flavor, not fishy, comes with chips 12 oz clam chowder - consistent, hot bowl of soup, good flavor.

Yelp
One of my fav places to eat when I'm near Newport or Huntington also has a location This is a spot where everything on the menu is delicious! Perfect when you're going to the beach Chips and guac by the beach with either some sushi or fish burrito. Delicious!!
google avatar

Angela Marie M.

Yelp
A 1/2 pound of the salmon poke is the perfect amount to satisfy my craving. I love the poke from here!

Yelp
Fresh seafood, quality ingredients, Nice ambiance with indoor & outdoor dining. Busy place. Order at the front counter, so it's helpful to check out the expansive menu in advance. Be sure to view the special fish for the day. They also offer fresh raw oysters on the half shell which are not on the menu. We ordered a poke bowl with half ahi tuna & half salmon on salad greens with 4 ingredients they let you pick. We picked for the poke, edamame, pickled carrots, seaweed salad & cucumber. They neglected to included the cucumber but while we were not happy because the bowl was something like $20 and it's not like it was a ton of ingredients to remember, we just call it as oversight on the part of the staff. Speaking of oversight, when the staff brought our food, they only gave us eating intensive for one person but there were clearly two of us sitting there. Hello? We had the salad with fish and choose blackened walu which was good. It was very firm but perhaps that it how it's supposed to be. We also ordered 4 oysters on the half shell which were good. Nice alcoholic selections. We had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio which were perfect for the meal. Overall a good meal but some little misses on details and service. They were quick to clear our table while we were still drinking our wine. Just wished they were that quick to notice the other things overlooked. Expensive lunch at about $90 including tax and tip for a casual place.

Gracie J.

Yelp
Fresh fish. Good poke. Gets busy quickly. Had open air seating in the back. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, pay for parking and wait in line but definitely would order here again if I was already in the area.
google avatar

Jeannie M.

Yelp
Great place for a mid-day snack. Friendly staff and open seating. Sat outside and enjoyed the weather! Absolutely will come again!
google avatar

Erikaaa S.

Yelp
It was delicious! I got 1/2 lb ahi tuna, 1lb of salmon, 1/2 of their ceviche , their chips in a bag , and order of their artichokes! Everything tasted fresh! Took me a hour to drive here and would definitely come back again! Also a plus that all the staffs are nice and friendly!
google avatar

Will P.

Yelp
The ahi tuna was delicious and I would come back solely for that. The bowl I ordered was good, but I didn't love the salmon. I'm not sure if it lacked flavor or if the ahi tuna was just so much better but next time I will get all tuna. I also enjoyed the chili garlic flakes and I recommend for anyone who gets a poke bowl. My fiancée ordered the La bamba roll, which was solid but nothing special. It is on the expensive side ($58 total for about 4 items) but definitely high quality, delicious fresh fish
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
My favorite seafood in OC. I recommend the tuna poke, guac, seaweed salad. It makes a great bite on a chip, trust me, and add a little Tommy sauce. The tacos and burritos are also solid but a bit heavy, depends what you're looking for a in a meal. Everyone there is super friendly and can help you with the menu. I love the vibe, and seating (you order and sit down). I'd like to try the sushi too sometime soon.
google avatar

Rianne A.

Yelp
Still as good and fresh as always! I've been coming here for almost a decade now and quality never disappoints. It's definitely become a lot busier over the years but I will always stop by to get my poke fix if I'm in the area!
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh poke- the poke bowl menu is separate from their main menu though, you'll see it on the side of the cash registers, although it was a little confusing since it's not on their main menu. Casual spot with quick service. Parking might be tricky, but there is free 30 minute street parking nearby if you wanted to order to-go.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
Very nice service and helpful when I was ordering. I got the 1/4 lb salmon poke bowl. I heard this place was the best poke place in OC. I thought it was good but not anything phenomenal. The fish was pretty fresh and not fishy tasting. However the rice in both mine and my friend's poke bowls was super undercooked bc it was crunchy and hard. I wouldn't get the bowl again but there were a lot of other things on the menu, and we plan to try more things in the future like their burrito and poke nachos
google avatar

Elise B.

Yelp
I came for dinner on a Sunday night, it was busy with a line out the door, but it moved quickly. You order at the counter and get a number, then the food is brought to the table. They have indoor and outdoor seating with heaters. I ordered the hurricane roll & bear flag roll. The fish was fresh & I loved the sauce on it. Parking- shared parking lot with other businesses
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
The freshness of the food, the location of the restaurant with the sea breeze coming at your face, it's so relaxing. Food is always good here.
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
Poke bowls To Go. First time here - fast and efficient counter service. The issue is they don't post their poke bowl menu online and they only had one copy of the paper menu at the register. So we were left scrambling to figure out what to order while at the register, people in line behind us. Lots of regulars here so they probably already know what to order. Huge Thank You to past Yelpers who posted the Poke menu in the pictures!! It alleviated some of my pre-order stress. *Suggestion to management - if you don't want to post your poke bowl prices online, at least can you list what the base and topping options are? Or have paper copies available by the front door. Besides the ordering anxiety, everything else was great. Minimal wait for our order, cold ice water while we waited, lots of napkins, chopsticks and condiments by the door. Tuna and salmon were both really fresh and they put A LOT of avocado. My bowl was so packed I couldn't mix it around to blend the base with the fish and toppings. If I was at home I probably would have dumped it in a bigger bowl to toss. 1/2 pound Poke Bowl with 1/2 Ahi Tuna and 1/2 Salmon was $21.00. For just 1/2 pound Tuna $19.50. There's a really nice patio outside. Parking isn't too bad in the lot nearby.

Yelp
I moved out of the area a few years ago and was back in town and had to get my Bear Flag fix ! I ordered a small side of sautéed mixed vegetables and the specialty burrito with Salmon/white rice (Tommy sauce on the side) please! If you get a burrito they are delicious and STUFFED, so in terms of sauce to burrito ratio I recommend asking for 2 sides of the Tommy sauce. Customer service is great and plenty of seating options. Great casual spot to grab dinner. My friends got poke and shrimp and loved theirs as well. I was too hungry to take photos...so sorry the phone did not eat first today
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
Came back next day to try some different dishes. The calamari salad is to die for. In fact, we are swinging by on our way out of town to pick up more for the ride home. The thinly sliced ginger is the secret ingredient of this delicious dish. Had the calamari fries too, which was also very very good. The fish sandwich (we chose ahi which was very lightly seared). The fish was good but the sandwich was bland - kinda like the burrito we had yesterday. Just not a good mix. Lastly we had a side of ahi poke again just to round out our meal and sadly today's ahi poke was old. The fish was mushy and dissolved in your mouth. We didn't finish it, nor did most of the people around us, and none of us brought what was left home. We still love this place - love the informality of their ordering and relaxed seating choices; and love the large selection of food in various forms.
google avatar

Madison C.

Yelp
The quality is beyond great and will never disappoint! Very busy and have a lot of seating. They are generous w the fish portions as well! However it's kinda hard to understand the menu and what you are able to get
google avatar

Jenny C.

Yelp
Bear Flag has the most fresh, high quality poke I tried in OC. I ordered the chips, guac, 1/2 salmon and 1/2 pound ahi poke with some bear flag tacos. Everything was so good and the guacamole was really creamy and flavorful as well. The food came out fast and there was plenty of of seating inside and outside. I highly recommend coming on Tuesday because it's $3 for taco Tuesday! The service was great since the cashier helped us understand the menu more and the ambiance is spacious and casual.
google avatar

Paula H.

Yelp
I haven't been here for a while and decided to visit on my day off work! It's still as great as I remembered it. There's a parking lot in the back, which is nice. A short line when we got there but it moved pretty quickly. They're pretty fast at taking orders. There was some seating both inside and outside. However, we wanted to take our food down to the beach and eat it! I really like the bear flag burrito. It's packed with beans, greens, tomatoes, and yummy sauce. It was perfect to go with the poke bowl. We got the larger size. My only note is I wish they gave us more rice to go along with the fish. It felt like the proportions were off. A lot of fish, which I'm so thankful for, but not enough rice for me to balance it out. I think I also prefer the salmon. The ahi was a little more saucy than I would have liked. Overall, still an awesome lunch visit for a beach day! Can't wait to come back again.
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
Ugh love love LOVE their tuna. always so fresh, i'm usually a salmon girl but their tuna is on a different level. I've tried their poké bowl but i think i prefer the poke nachos better! clam chowder was also good but feel like ive had better clam chowder elsewhere. guac also amazing, but still need to try so much more of their menu. restaurant location is also super cute with both indoor and outdoor seating, and right by the beach!! one of my fav poké spots in oc
google avatar

Ella W.

Yelp
The most amazing poke bowl I have ever had. Could eat this every single day!!! Absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
Came in on a moderately busy sunny Sunday afternoon and was able to find outside seating overlooking the beach, which is all anyone could ask for in a seafood restaurant. Being able to eat while looking out to the wide-open ocean is enough to make a man shiver his timbers. I had a Poke Salmon Bowl along and the ordering process was incredibly simple. Using a checklist, you just check off the ingredients you want and hand it over to the front. It also has space on the bottom to add any sensitivities you might have to other food. I was a little too hungry and put that I was allergic to sushi instead of shrimp, haha. Staff was understanding enough about it, but I will never live that down. I was able to get my food within 5-7 minutes. My party also decided to order the Calamari Fries. First off, the Calamari was the best I've had in recent memory. It was the right amount of crunchy, salty, and seasoned. I wouldn't be surprised if I came back solely for the it. The salmon that came with the Poke Bowl was no doubt fresh and I finished it within minutes. Quick and efficient service, amazing outdoor views, and delicious food abound in Bear Flag Fish, what more could one ask for?

Yelp
Great spot to get something to eat and drink. Environment is excellent and is a great place to sit outside. Food is fantastic.

Yelp
TL;DR - delicious poke and great service, would recommend and come back again! FOOD: *my poke order: -white rice/mixed greens -1/4 ahi tuna (they were not offering salmon this day) -cucumber, crunchy chili garlic, furikake, green onion (+), kale (+), seaweed salad, and avocado (+) + is extra -all 3 sauces 5/5, so fresh & delicious. u can't compare this to anything. SERVICE: the people here are amazing!! so friendly and welcoming. 5/5 OTHER THINGS TO NOTE: *parking is free for ppl that are going into the plaza. many open spots but this is a popular area *there's plenty of seating inside & outside but the line does get long but ordering was very easy and quick *we dined in & it took 5-15 mins to get our orders *the restroom is for only 1 person at a time & you can see inside thru the frosted window on the door of the restroom so be mindful about that.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Very nice but crowded spot for seafood. There is free parking in the plaza. You are provided a number and self seat, then the waiters bring you your order. It's near Newport Beach so it's the best spot to grub at after chilling at the beach. Came with my wife and mother in law. We ordered poke bowls and a large seafood plate to share. The poke bowl was good, especially with their Tommy sauce -- very rich! Though, I think their highlight is in the fish itself. The poke bowls are about $21 each. Next time, I'd opt to just purchase the fish on its own (it comes with chips as well). This seems to have been what everyone was ordering. The burrito from the people sitting next to me looked bomb, portion size was pretty big too. The blackened mahi mahi that was recommended to me by the cashier was delicious. Sauteed veggies were perfect and mixed greens were fresh. Great flavor in the fish and they provided some vinegarette mixture and their signature Tommy sauce to dip in. I can't wait to come back and try everything else!

Honestly, I think about this place at least once a week. The chips and ahi poke haunt my dreams because they are just that good. It tastes incredibly fresh. They really hit the spot for me. The other things we've had there are also great, including the cioppino, ceviche, and tacos. The line goes by fast as the workers there are great. The place itself is quite cute and has a lot of outdoor seating that is dog friendly. We enjoyed walking around the area after because it was so cute.

Yelp
The wait time to get in on a Saturday afternoon was about 20 minutes, so don't let the line out the door fool you. Since the poke is already cut up and the Ceviche as well, we got our food pretty quickly. The person taking our order was so nice when I told her it was my first time here and she guided me through how to order the poke, which if you get, I recommend getting the chili crisp oil - delicious. The weakest item we ordered was the cucumber salad, it wasn't anything special and the sauce on the side they bring isn't enough flavor to really enjoy it all. It tasted like a regular cucumber but cut in a fun way. The fish was fresh for sure and they gave us plenty of chips to enjoy it with. Outdoor seating can be pretty limited, but we snagged a bar stool section which was great. Parking is also pretty easy if you're eating at the plaza. We managed to park for free, so I would try to go that route before doing the street pay parking.

Yelp
Decent seafood spot! I might have overhyped myself about this place after hearing so many good things. We got their large seafood plate and their specialty burrito. Don't get me wrong, their pokes were fresh! But nothing special? And their burrito was just filled with rice and beans and hardly any fish. I was a little disappointed but maybe I need to change my order

Yelp
*Where's the Fish??* Been going to Bear Flag ever since their Opening Day long before they jumped ship to dock their new stadium on the other side of Lido Peninsula and has always been my favorite spot for a fresh & tasty ahi, yellowtail or mahi mahi burrito. You'll see how much I love & recommend Bear Flag when you read my previous review. But some things in life change and sadly, Bear Flag continues to skimp on the fish with burritos & tacos...and serves partially stale corn chips with ceviche. My fish burrito (again) had the wimpiest sliver of fish...as did wifey's fish taco too. The LARGE ceviche was excellent and filled with fish...but one of the two bags of chips was not having a good day. Even my stepmom said something voluntarily, after sampling each bag. Then Dad agreed. The last two times I've been to Bear Flag, what was once my favorite fish burrito (with Tommy Sauce on the side) was more like a rice & bean burrito accented with a sliver of fish. I'll give them one more chance of redemption to find out if it's 3-strikes you're out. No high-fives ~~ Go grab some bench. Game Over {{{Stay Tuned}}}

Yelp
I come here all the time! Yes, they catch all their fish (except salmon) and have fresh ingredients on hand daily! My issue is with some of the staff that don't smile or don't include everything that I pay for in my meal. I often place online orders as the lines are long and the restaurant can get very crowded. 90% of the time, my bag will be missing items (side of beans or sauces) that I pay for. It's only when I get home that I realize I don't have everything. It's really frustrating! Besides that, the food is great. I get the burritos all the time and I just tried the Hurricane roll (pictured below). Loved it! Tasted like a roll I love from Kauai. I'll be back for more sushi.
