"There’s something comforting about shopping center barbecue, especially in Sacramento, which is where some of the best comfort food can be found across different cuisines. Bear West, which shares space with an electronic store and a halal shop on Watt Avenue in North Highlands, has some of the most reliable barbecue in town; their classic menu keep things simple with three- and four-way meals with a selection of sides (the macaroni and cheese is non-negotiable, as are the candied yams cut daily by hand), as well as rib platters and link sandwiches. Their popularity and dedication to the low, slow art of barbecue means they rarely end a day with inventory, so it really is imperative to seize the moment where Bear West is concerned." - Tamerra Griffin

I’ve been to this place twice so far and this is probably the best soul food place I’ve been to EVER. Hot links and tri tip were nice and flavorful. I’m very picky when it comes to mac n cheese, but I was genuinely impressed and it’s definitely my go-to now if I get any extra sides. I’ve been to a lot of restaurants where they make their collard greens WAY too salty but these were perfect. Yams were sweet and delicious. I’m not a big cornbread person but this place made it pretty good. Banana pudding is pretty solid too if you’re craving a sweet tooth right after. Would 💯% recommend this place to friends and family.

This has to be the best BBQ that I’ve had since coming to Sacramento 6years ago. The ribs are not skimpy at all meaty and flavorful. The brisket is full of flavor and melt in your mouth tender. This place is a little out of the way for my family but it’s worth the trip. This is a go to place for my family for BBQ. They also have delicious desserts. I had the 7up pound cake and my wife had the German chocolate cake, delicious.

What an absolutely surprising Gem of Soul Food located in one of the most stressed out parts of town. They tend to make single batches of their food, so it pays to get there before they run out. We tried the pepper chicken, Mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Everything was amazing.

If you like southern style St Louis BBQ you are going to love this place! Doesn't matter what you order, everything tastes great. Today I ordered the three way dinner. 3 meats and two sides plate. I wanted the half rack of ribs and the lady at the register recommended the three way plate as a good way to save money as well as get two sides. I did sample the side that they call cabbage which is sauteed cabbage and chopped mild link and it was really good. The next time I go I'll probably get that as a side instead of the coleslaw. Although coleslaw is always my favorite with barbecue ribs. The beans are to die for good. The atmosphere feels like New Orleans and the people are super friendly and helpful. There are a few tables, so don't go during the busy times if you plan on eating in. I was there about 5:00 today and it was starting to fill up. No table service but it doesn't matter. Next time you want good barbecue make sure you check out Bear West BBQ and Soul Food in North Highlands on Watt at Karl. You won't be disappointed 👍🏼👍🏼

So good! We got 2 4-ways and 1 3-way and all 5 of us were satisfied and full! Even had to grab some desert after we finished. Banana Pudding was perfection! Will definitely return! Had chicken, ribs, tritip, pulled pork, hot links, Cabbage, beans, Mac, yams and potato salad! All delicious!

Today was the first time I’ve ever been there. I saw the good reviews so I drove extra far to try this place out. Pros: - Hard working people. I see their hard work. - Price was not too bad Cons: - The place is tightly narrow and not in a good area. - They forgot about me… yeah… they forgot about me and my order so I waited 2.5 hours outside in my car until they had time to talk to me. The place was so packed and busy so I had to wait in the car. - The ribs and “hotlinks” was mediocre. Pretty much the same as store-bought Walmart ribs and hotdogs. Not kidding. I noticed they served me the same ones. - The shrimp and grits were just microwaved hotdogs and 3 shrimps. I do feel bad for giving this place a bad review but dam man, I really had high hopes for this place and was shot down immediately.

This is the best food. I had ribs and tri tip. They were amazing. Their cabbage is the best side they have. Best cabbage I ever had. Of course cornbread was so tasty. I am definitely going to back there for cabbage again.

Wifey wanted to try out this bbq spot we saw on Instagram before an event. We got there like and hour before closing. They were pretty packed and had a lot of to go orders. Unfortunately, they ran out of a lot of stuff by the time we got to order but they had good recommendations for other items. Everything we had was on point! I don't really even eat BBQ like that unless it's from home. Got the links, green beans and potato salad. All seasoned well and had great flavors. You usually do get that when people do soul food in bulk. I'll definitely return to try the Mac and cheese and some other sides they were out of. I'd definitely recommend.
