Where to Try King Cake by the Slice in New Orleans

"Bearcat Baked offers a creative take on king cake with a flower-shaped version that includes almond, orange marmalade, and a white chocolate cream cheese glaze. It's garnished with shaved almond, pearl sugars, and a candied orange slice, and comes with a tiny cat trinket." - Ashley Day

Once we discovered Bearcat Baked on the third day of our weeklong trip, we went back every day, until the staff remembered our names 🤪 Their coffee is delicious, as are their pastries. Our favourites include the croissant with ham and cheese and the strawberry danish, but everything we got was incredible! Definitely go here if you appreciate stuff baked from scratch and high quality coffee!

The food here is amazing. The courtyard is the perfect place for brunch. All the staff was very nice. I recommend the potatoes and the strawberry ricotta pancakes. Drinks were good, as well. The tip is added to the bill, along with a “healthcare for our employees” service charge. They do circle that on the bill so it’s clear that you don’t have to tip anything extra.

What a dope little spot! Fast service space that is an absolute vibe. We went for breakfast and got some coffee alongside some breakfast burritos. Would definitely go back again to try some different things on the menu. Everything was delicious and priced great. Loved it.

Wow, let me say that again ... WOW ! This place was awesome! To properly laminate dough and shape into a French pastry is a real art and they have it down. The lamination was perfect. The butter croissant was flaky and delicious. It's the real test of lamination in my opinion. We shared a variety of pastries and all were delicious. Pain au Chocolat was great. Again perfect lamination and high quality chocolate. My wife's favorite was the Orange marmalade filled Kouign Amann. It was small but bursting with flavor from the orange and sweetened laminated dough. My favorite was the Key lime Cheesecake filled Danish. It was a complete flavor bomb! Not a single negative in the half dozen or so different pastries that we tried. Most definitely will go back on our next visit and would highly recommend.

Our breakfast was FANTASTIC! My husband and I are dairy free and they had so many delicious options! I highly recommend the vegan biscuit with a breakfast sandwhich! The crispy potatoes were sooo good and seasoned well! The freshly squeezed orange juice was out of this world! 10/10 on everything! By far one of our favorite breakfast places!

Google
Omg this place is delicious! We were going to order from the menu and then the baked goods caught our eye. We got: Sausage roll and brisket and cheddar bun for savory and cinnamon roll and Blueberry koigan ananin for sweet every single bite was heaven. If you have to get only one thing, make it the cinnamon roll.

Google
Their baked goods are just average. I got the coffee cake and the Mexican hot chocolate cookie, and neither were anything special. Coffee cake: It was nicely crunchy on the sides, but the cake itself was like store-bought coffee cake. Nothing memorable in flavor or texture. Mexican hot chocolate cookie: The chocolate flavor was great, and the outside was nicely crisp, but the inside was dry, like a cakey brownie. I wasn't really a fan. Prices were reasonable, so I might try some of their baked goods. Would skip the coffee cake and hot chocolate cookie though.

Google
I stopped in this coffee shop for a quick coffee on my walk back to my hotel. I wish I had more time to hang out because the place had great vibes and a delicious looking hot menu (they have a full kitchen) It’s a ways from the touristy core of the city but it’s worth the walk if you’re looking for a place to hang out for an hour or so. Coffee was great! Give them a try!

Yelp
I had a great experience at Bearcat Baked! The bakery was a few minutes from our hotel and still had plenty of goods within closing hour. My party tried an iced vanilla latte and maple latte with sage. Their espresso is excellent and the drinks were tasty and well crafted--it takes a few minutes to get your drink order, but it's worth the wait! We also tried the coffee cake and bearclaw. While both items were a tad dry, they were full of flavor and served in large, shareable portions. They had many other pastries that looked good and their sandwiches smelled amazing too. I highly recommended this spot if you're looking for a quick coffee/snack break in the downtown area!

Yelp
Bearcat Cafe was jam packed with a long line and wait list for lunch, so we walked a block to their sister branch Bearcat Baked. So glad we did! Ample empty tables and a chiller vibe. They serve a similar menu, along with fresh baked goodies. Service was quick. Staff were friendlier and less harried. I loved BC's shrimp & grits and it was available here. Shrimp were plump, juicy and cooked just right, although the sauce tasted a bit different than the cafe's. Grits were oddly cold in one spot in the bowl. Also had an Americano and a slice of coffee cake -- a lovely finish to the meal. Bearcat Baked only had blueberry muffins and coffee cake in the pastry display case by early afternoon. Go early for better selection!

Yelp
Couldn't get a seat at Bearcat Cafe? In a hurry and need a quick pick me up?? I recommend stopping in to Bearcat Baked! They are a small cafe offering the baked goodies from the restaurant, plus a little more if you need something a little heavier. They offer counter service. Place your order, get a number, and take a seat. The breakfast menu boasts sandwiches, burritos, and scrambles. They also offer a smaller lunch menu including wraps and sandwiches. The pastry menu is just amazing! And honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the offerings. I plan to make either the restaurant or the cafe part of my regular rotation when I'm in town.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you're looking for a pastry or want to stop for a lil' treat. We initially stopped since it was within walking distance of where we were staying, but we'd absolutely go back for the pastries and coffee. It can get a bit hectic and crowded depending on time of day so try hitting it early to avoid a wait. The sausage rolls and quiche were particularly divine. I recommend stopping in if you're close by!

Yelp
Came here on two occassions because of how quick the service is. If the line is too long at CBD, this location is only a few minutes away - more of a bakery and quick service. Loved the brisket hash and couyon daddy. Lattes are on the sweeter side. Black sesame chai was really delicious, the hint of black sesame made the drink a bit more savory but it was too sweet for me to finish once it cooled down. I enjoyed the salted maple latte but would probably ask for less sweetener if possible. If you are a matcha nut, you will be quite disappointed in their matcha drinks, the color isn't there and it just taste like milk. The strawberry matcha taste like strawberry milk with a sprinkle of matcha.

Yelp
Easily a 5 star bakery. Visiting from San Diego and even though we have many cafes and bakeries there, everything I had at Bearcat was PHENOMENAL! They have interesting latte flavors where the flavors work very well with each other. I tried the smoked maple sage and the black sesame chai. Each latte comes with a double espresso shot. Service was great, everyone is friendly and there is plenty of seating. I believe parking is $4 an hour down that street, beware that parking tickets are about $30 as well. I would gladly come back whenever I'm visiting NOLA! Check them out

Yelp
The line at Bearcat CBD was down the street, so I stopped by the bakery instead. I thought it would be a quick visit but we waited 15-20 minutes for a biscuit sandwich and coffee. I also got a vegan strawberry pistachio muffin that was very good. Would definitely go back, but would probably choose the line at Bearcat CBD first.

Yelp
Are you in the CBD and are looking for a great coffee and pastry? Well do I have the place for you. I visited this location multiple times during my 2 week stay. I recommend getting here earlier as this lave can get quite a line and they will run out of their popular pastries. They pull a very good shot of espresso. My favorite series were the monkey bread (which is as big as a baby's head) and the sausage roll (rich but absolutely delicious). I will definitely return here.

Yelp
Came from "MoMo's Mongolian Grill & Sushi" (which was on 852 Carondelet St but closed in early 2024 -- and the receipt showing an address for this bakery). Not sure if it is the same owner, the food presentation does not seem comparable.

Yelp
Very tasty baked goods! Especially the Pan au Chocolat. Their breakfast croissant sandwich was also good. I'd love to go back and try one of their fun selections of canned drinks! One thing to note is that this isn't a cozy sit-down bakery cafe. The bakers were playing heavy metal and having a good time, which is a not a problem at all! But if you're looking to do some work, take the tasty baked goods to-go!

Yelp
I'm such a huge fan of Bearcat for brunch, so just had to try their bakery spot in CBD. The bakery is tucked away in a quieter area of the CBD, but not far from the trolley / bus stops and walking distance from the French Quarter. Other than Cafe du Monde, there's really limited spots in the Quarter / CBD for quality baked goods at reasonable prices. Love that they don't try to gouge you here with tourist mark-ups. It's a great option to add to the FQ / CBD rotation. Everything is super reasonably priced - especially the pastries. I tried the S'mores croissant, sausage roll, and sourdough bread. The prices were on par with the local bakeries in New Orleans. Super reasonable too considering the location and the size of the pastries. The S'mores croissant was huge - reminded me of the massive croissants in Houston from Common Bond. If you know Common Bond, you know what I'm talking about. The croissant was double the size of a traditional croissant. Amazingly it was not too sweet and was a light bite surprisingly - I decided to cut mine in half so I could enjoy the rest of the baked goods that I bought that day. The sweetness of the marshmallow top / ganache filling were balanced by the plain croissant. My favorite of the bunch though was the sausage roll - it was perfect balance and size. The super buttery flaky pastry against the dense rich sausage. It was surprisingly super moist. There were so many options to choose from that next time will take more pictures of. Next visit - I definitely want to try the bear claw and seasonal danishes.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. Their coffee selection is great. The staff is quick and friendly. Ambiance is the perfect place to go have a quick bite and get on with your day. Their breakfast burrito was delicious!

Yelp
I took a quick trip here with a friend on this rainy Saturday morning. We tried the blueberry muffin, which was good warmed up, and the mushroom quiche, which was deliciously creamy and seasoned well. I also got a side of the grits because they are my favorite ever. Service was really quick compared to Bearcat CBD, as it's more of a bakery/quick bite atmosphere. It was super cute inside with limited seating, perfect for a group of four or less. If you're craving Bearcat on the run or a beautiful pastry, check it out!

Yelp
I've only tried their Sourdough Boule..and it was so good! I had to stop myself from eating the entire loaf.
google avatar

Alexa S.

Yelp
The restaurant is small but has a lot of seating available. The staff was knowledgeable and helped to answer any questions. I got the roasted cauliflower wrap. It had so much flavor I couldn't put it down. The cauliflower had the perfect amount of char, the crispy chickpeas added the right crunch, and tahini dressing coated everything evenly. I also got the hot chicken sandwich. It was cooked well with a crunchy coating outside well the chicken stayed moist. It came with a large side of potatoes that were crispy and had so much flavor.
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
Tried the chocolate croissant and the thai chai drink. The croissant was solid and very big and filling. The thai chai was a little too sweet; very interesting flavor to try but I probably wouldn't get again. The cafe is not suitable for sitting down and studying (no wifi and very loud music).

Yelp
Best sourdough place in the area. It's self serving kind of cafe. The line runs pretty fast. Croissant is decent. It's good to relax with a piece of bread, sandwich or pastry. They have homemade lemonade and cold pressed OJ in the fridge. Manager works hard to keep the space clean and neat. Must order sourdough bread.

Yelp
After going to Bearcat Cafe and being told they couldn't do a take out order (at 9am Sunday), we were referred to the Bearcat Bakery. There was a minimal line. I ordered an egg and cheese biscuit, a side of potatoes and a lavender latte with soy milk for a whopping $26. I still can't even figure out how that amount of food could be that expensive. The biscuit was overly salty; it was not finished. The potatoes were worth the hype but not whatever the price was and the lavender latte was one of the worst drinks I've ever had. Its taste was unpleasant and it was barely lukewarm. We went back and asked for the coffee to be remade. Over all very disappointing as the reason I wanted to try Bearcat was for the vegan and gluten free scramble option.

Yelp
Nice place for lunch. . I like the freshly baked pastries at the counter. Helpful employee answerd my question about the sugar context of an item. As I try to have less sugar in my diet. The crispy potatoes are pretty good. There were some hard burnt pieces but the good outweighed the bad there. The sausage roll had great flavor. It was pork sausage in the middle just an fyi. Flaky is how I like my outer layers. I'll be back to try the coffee drinks.

Yelp
Hit this place every morning on my latest visit. High quality baked goods in a kick back setting.. music choices not my taste though. Food was stellar though
google avatar

Yelp
We were staying at a hotel a block away. Thanks to YELP we discovered Bearcat Baked. One of us walked over every morning to pick up a fresh, hot loaf of bred. Laura, who bakes bread, became fast baking buddies with the baker. A question: ofr Bearcat Baked: you bake such great bread. Why do you put in a plastic bag when it's purchased? The plastic bag makes the crust less crunchy.

Shari D.

Yelp
I don't usually care for either brisket or hash, but theirs was amazing!! Pastry case was beautiful too.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick service and good quality food and drink options. The peach tea with vanilla is really delicious! Nice clean and quaint spot for a bakery.
google avatar

Gretchen F.

Yelp
Cute bakery with eating area serving all sorts of food. Open kitchen vibe. Delicious matcha latte perfectly barista-ed. Prices are a tad high. I travel for living and look for bakeries in every city I go to in San Francisco LA and New York have better priced baked goods. Seven dollars for a ham and cheese croissant is steep.
google avatar

Alana G.

Yelp
The food/bakery and coffee are amazing! We spent 5 days in New Orleans and every day we had something here or at the restaurant. The quiche was balanced perfectly for a nice onion taste, the crossiantdonuts is good.. I also fell in love with there coffees, and I don't like coffee. There's has lots of chocolate flavors. The only compliment is the women at the front counter. She was very rude, and don't know or acted like she did not know there selection and that we were bothering her.
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
A little bit pricy, but the food is worth the cost. The bakery is like a quick stop versus the main restaurant. The food was served quickly and made fresh. They offer to warm all the bakery items and have some quick grab and go options as well. The cauliflower wrap was delicious with a nice crunch and good flavor. The chicken sandwich was just larger than expected and had the perfect texture. It was a bit hard to eat because of the size and the cheese was oozing out. The potatoes were so nicely seasoned too. The restaurant had a hipster vibe with plants on the walls and a disco ball up top. The music playing fit the vibe of the restaurant. We went near closing but they served us and let us sit and finish our meal after they closed. Would def go back for another visit

Yelp
So good, I forgot to take photos ‍ I can't believe how many awesome, flavorful, and beautiful things can come out of a such a tiny place. Our group came in on a rainy Friday morning for takeout. We had: 1. Bacon, egg, and cheese bun 2. The Bearcat breakfast with bacon 3. Ham and cheese croissant Not a bad haul for ~$30. The eggs were fluffy, creamy, and full of flavor. The bacon was perfectly crispy. And the croissant had that nearly impossible balance of light and fluffy, while also being flaky and crusty. An exceptional experience!

Yelp
Stopped by here while checking out a few other cafes in the area. Somewhat small, and true to the name, it seems to act mainly as a bakery which is right behind the counter in full view. The actual dining area is nothing special. Part of it feel sort of function over form so to speak. My current review is only reflective of today's visit, and might change. I got the egg + cheese bun (plain). Put simply, it was a bit salty. Enough to have me not appreciate it as much as i'd like. The brioche is a bit dry and salty itself. A good brioche in my experience should be soft and slightly sweet if anything.

C M.

Yelp
2 out of 3 of us loved our food! Wait wasn't too long (get there before 10:30 even on weekdays.). The good : butterfly matcha, hot chicken and egg on biscuit (biscuit nice and flaky, one of the better I've had in NOLA, brisket hash brown, side of crispy potatoes). The diner who didn't like sandwich had avocado egg sandwich, but regretted not ordering pancakes.

Elías Weetjens W.

Yelp
Good food. Breakfast sandwich was amazing. Service was very nice, they even accepted us when they were technically closed.

Yelp
Good looking pricey pastries. TERRIBLE COFFEE.....!!!!! TOO LOUD music for a Sunday morning. Tried to make it an after Mass stop. Will keep looking.

Michael O.

Yelp
This place got rave reviews and was pretty disappointing. The baked goods were solid but the breakfast sucked. Cold eggs and bacon, microwaved quiche, and the potatoes were way too salty (and somehow cold too).

Terra S.

Yelp
Excellent food and fun vibe. Had the mushroom scramble and potatoes and they were both incredible. Also, Mardi Gras donuts, sausage roll, tomato croissant all some of the best I've ever had. Love this place!
google avatar

Christine O.

Yelp
Salted maple iced latte is the best latte I've ever had!! 1000/10 so so good. Quick and cute place to grab a coffee while waiting to be seated at bearcat.
google avatar

Brittney G.

Yelp
Best bakery in Nola imo. I've tried them all. This place has the best croissant in town! Super flakey, exceptionally fresh and the staff is absolutely wonderful. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Went to the soft opening. They don't have a menu up but they had paper menus. Hopefully they will have one up soon. They had loafs of bread and a few pastries. Again it was a soft opening lol. Same friendly atmosphere, saw one familiar face. Ordered a hot mocha with was as good as the cafe"s. Ordered a chocolate croissant and a sausage pastry. Both were good and tasted fresh obviously. Hopefully they will add more items once they fully open. Well definitely be back.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
unprofessional staff member ruins lunch date-first time coming in and I was greeted by a unfriendly face with a cold attitude. I'm not sure what set her off unfortunately she couldn't hear my order a few times, but that shouldn't mean you become irritated and nasty with the customer. Don't know why she would treat customers like crap. I wouldn't recommend coming to this bakery.

Abigail W.

Yelp
Super cute place! Came in at 8am and it sounded like an EDM concert. My type of vibes

Nicole S.

Yelp
Salted Caramel coffee to die for. The monkey bread amazing. Just go, you won't regret it
google avatar

Caitlin P.

Yelp
Love this spot. The service is always great. Everyone is very friendly and informative. I can vouch for the croissants, bear claws, and various lattes. The citrus flavored baked goods have all, unfortunately, been misses for me! Way too bitter! But I stop by at least once a week and will continue to do so for the rest of the baked goods!
google avatar

Kimberly A.

Yelp
Absolute perfection. If you love the original restaurant, you're going to adore the bakery. Best gingersnap cookies ever. And the pastries are divine.

Pamela Janine K.

Yelp
Ugh, always reconsider rating these things because the tourists flock and the lines get long...but if you don't want the full she-bang of a 1.5 hour wait around the corner at Bearcat (one of our t local places I actually WOULD consider waiting that long for) then the food quality / pastries and sandwiches / salads are fresh but limited and just terrific. Recommended the smoked tuna salad. Yum.

Jackson R.

Yelp
bad they are babys when it was raining the lock the door but kept it open on the app so now we are soacked
