Chef Michael Schlow Returns to Boston’s Fine Dining Scene - Eater Boston

"Beard Papa’s, a Japanese cream puff chain with locations across the U.S., made a splashy debut at 232 Newbury Street, in Back Bay, this past weekend. Lines snaked down the block as customers waited for their chance to grab a handful of the chain’s colorful cream puffs in flavors like green tea and Oreo cookie crumble. While this is Beard Papa’s only current location in Massachusetts, it’s actually a return to Boston for the brand: The cream puff chain once ran several Boston locations, including in Chinatown and Allston, but all have since closed." - Erika Adams

I highly recommend Beard Papa's vanilla bean cream-filled original crust puff. The sweetness is perfect, and the crust offers a satisfying crunch. It's definitely worth trying if you have a sweet tooth. You can enjoy it for takeout or in their seating area.

Great place for a tasty snack during your Newbury shopping! Food: My first creme puff here was great! It had a light fluffy cream, flaky pastry, and a flavorful frosting topping. The frosting was a great addition to the mild sweetness of the base cream puff and really made it a proper sweet treat. Service: The employees were very pleasant nothing to complain about. Atmosphere: It’s a pretty small space shared with another food vendor and the seating area is interesting to say the least. Beside that the mascot and decoration is very inviting.

Beard papa’s make the fluffiest, lightest cream puffs that just melt in your mouth. I’ve been buying their puffs for almost 10 years and the consistency in quality & taste is so commendable. My favorite is actually their seasonal flavors - the strawberry cheesecake is to die for.

Great cream puffs! They have two size options - one is huge and one is pretty small. If you get the small one, it comes with 6 and is plenty for two people to share.

I am a big fan of Beard Papa's -- I always make a point to get a box of mini cream puffs when I'm in LA. When I visited in June, it seemed like their menu was pretty limited -- they only have full-sized cream puffs. I've never really been a fan of their full-sized cream puffs, but I decided to give it a try. It's in the space space as Teazzi so there's just a counter of space for its operations. We got the matcha cream puff with matcha filling. I thought that the matcha topping was good, and the cream puff was pretty good as well. The matcha filling was interestingly very liquidy. Rather than being a cream that held its own shape, it felt more like a drink. The cream puff exterior was definitely better than the filling. The main thing I liked about Beard Papa's was the mini cream puffs which have a lot of crunchy cream puff in addition to the cream inside. I probably won't be returning to this location because I'm just not a fan of the surface area to volume ratio of full-sized cream puffs, and the filling left something to be desired.

Tasty puff . Several glazing choices. Choice of ice cream filling, which is delicious. Reasonable prices. Joyful atmosphere. Friendly staff. Recommended.

Beard Papa's is finally back in Boston! It is now located on Newbury Street, in a shared space with Teazzi. The grand opening was on February 24, 2024, and the line was expectedly insane. I queued up an hour early at 10 AM and was the ~60th person in line (a lot of people let their friends cut, so the line kept getting pushed back; I didn't mind that much, but it was a bit anxiety-inducing because I only chose to bear the cold in hopes of making the cut-off for the exclusive freebies). It took 1.5 hours to make it to the entrance and another 0.5 hours to receive my order (so 2 hours total). The inside was much larger than I expected. Beard Papa's is located to the left when you walk in, and Teazzi is in the back. There are bleachers but no tables (aside from a glass plant structure in the middle which could be used as a table if it were emptier, but it seems more like a decoration). I was impressed by how organized the grand opening was. The manager controlled the incoming traffic, directing people to Teazzi if desired and delivering their drinks once they got back in line for Beard Papa's. This person also managed handing out the Beard Papa's orders to those waiting on the bleachers. There were several people preparing the cream puffs, so the wait was not that bad once you ordered (~10 minutes). The exclusive freebies that were handed out to the first 100 customers were a tote bag, a water bottle, and two coupons. Tbh, I don't think these freebies were worth waiting 2 hours for (maybe if they gave out their merch instead), but I was also going for the experience/excitement of being there on grand opening day. Teazzi also had a BOGO promotion. I ordered two matcha (green tea) eclairs and one chocolate eclair and received a free original using my grand opening voucher. All came with vanilla filling. I liked the original the most because it was the flakiest. The matcha and chocolate frosting had a taste and texture similar to the frosting on Pocky. The filling was lightly sweetened and very smooth. Although you could see the cream puffs being baked, they were made in huge batches at a time to accommodate the grand opening. I feel like the batch I got had already been sitting out for a bit, as it did not taste the freshest (I also think the cream puffs should be kept behind some sort of glass for sanitary reasons). However, I still liked it, and it still tasted good the next day. I came back a few weeks later to use my grand opening vouchers and because they added new shells (strawberry and Oreo) and fillings (matcha) that I was excited to try. However, much to my disappointment, they don't start making the new flavors until around noon, and it was only 11 AM when I went. Although I did not have to wait in a two-hour line this time, only the manager was manning both Beard Papa's and Teazzi, so service was still very slow. I am not deducting any stars for this because the manager is very sweet, and I am chocking this up to new business woes.

Nice and warm place. You can drink milk tea and have cream puff. A little disappointed in the mini puff. Some of them not really fill up but still delicious.

Yelp
Got to stop in here on newbury and it's a great place to grab a boba and some cream puffs and run! I personally enjoyed the ube topped puff with vanilla filling! The creamy and buttery texture was great! The matcha def brings the full body of the green tea out earthy and all. The frozen mango is cold cold and actually frozen haha. I was expecting more of an ice cream consistency, that was a tough eat for me in contrast to the puff pastry it's put into. I would personally stick to the normal cream fillings those were bomb! Thats just my taste tho i have sensitive teeth haha. Thank you Beard papa's will be back!

Yelp
I grew up eating Beard Papa in San Francisco and was so happy when they decided to open up a location here. There's additional flavors that I haven't had before, like the frozen mango (which was great!), but you can never go wrong with the original or chocolate cream puffs. It shares a store with Teazzi so the seating area can be kind of small/awkward

Yelp
Great to have beard papas back in Boston, and with it good cream puffs - not many other places to get tasty, large cream puffs in this city. Matcha and ube eclairs were both great, as were both the matcha and standard fillings. Price is pretty standard for cream puffs of this size, which is still a little expensive but worth the occasional treat. Doesn't hurt that it opened in shared space with Teazzi, which has been one of my favorite bubble tea shops in Chinatown - just gives me more reasons to stop by :)

Yelp
I have not been to Beard Papa since they closed the Chinatown location. My friend brought me the original cream puff; the cream was light and not too sweet, and the pastry was flaky. I will try other flavors when I can, especially vanilla.

Yelp
The cream puffs are amazing. Although today the staff did not understand the concept of wearing gloves. He had the glove on, took my money. Put in the till and used the same gloved hand to grab me a cream puff. I told him no no no you touched money with that. He looked annoyed. Put on a new glove and got me another cream puff. Store owners. Please explain to your staff the point of the gloves. Especially after covid, you would think they are more aware of hygiene

Yelp
Beard Papa's has made a much-anticipated comeback to the Boston area after closing its previous locations in Chinatown and Allston. Location: This new spot is situated beneath MoreFun and also shares space with Teazzi. The puffs here are slightly cheaper than their New York counterparts, but they still feel a bit pricey for the size. Food Quality: I tried both the Mini Puffs and the original cream puffs. As expected, the puffs had that signature Beard Papa's taste, with shells perfectly cooked to have a soft bite and a slight crunch. Service: The service was quick and efficient, with the staff preparing our puffs in no time. Atmosphere: The atmosphere is okay, though it can get crowded on busier days. One downside is the ventilation, which is a bit poor, making the shop feel humid and potentially fogging up glasses. Overall: Beard Papa's is a delightful spot for a quick dessert. Despite the minor drawbacks, the quality of the puffs and the efficient service make it worth a visit.

Yelp
The best cream puffs I ever had! I got the matcha puff and an original puff that comes with the grand opening coupon. They only have the vanilla bean custard right now and it is so light and perfectly sweetened. The custard is a perfect ratio to the puff pastry and it is such a light and fluffy treat. I had the matcha puff right away and I really enjoyed the matcha chocolate on top of the pastry, I think it makes such a good combo with the custard. I saved the original puff for the next day and I ate it right out the fridge. It was still so delicious and the puff pastry was still good! My only critique is that when I went they laid out all the puffs right next to the customers with no plastic or glass or any barrier. So we were literally standing right over the puffs which doesn't seem sanitary at all.

Yelp
The pastry is crunchy. The matcha glaze on top is a bit too sweet for my taste but the matcha filling balances it out. Worth the try but I'm not sure if I would get it again. The store houses both Beard Papa's and Teazzi. There are a couple of tables but it's small place. There was no wait when I went on a Monday afternoon.

Yelp
I am so happy Beard Papa's is back in Boston (RIP the Chinatown location that closed during the pandemic). Beard Papa's is the best!!! When I learned about this location, I drove 20 minutes to get my fix and have been a few times since. My favorite it the crème brûlée flavor. I'm hoping they'll bring back the dulce de leche that they had at the Chinatown location previously.

Yelp
I hadn't heard of this brand before it opened up this location in Boston. I waited in line with some friends for the grand opening and received a tote bag, water bottle, and two coupons. On the opening day I ordered an original filling with a chocolate outside and one with a matcha outside. The chocolate outside was great, however, the matcha one tasted more like a white chocolate than a matcha flavor. The matcha outside had a very sweet taste that didn't quite pair as I would have liked best with the original filling. I know that the opening day menu is a bit different and didn't have all of the options, so I also returned for another day and ordered a matcha filling with an original outside. The matcha filling was great and had a light and airy quality to it. I was somewhat surprised to find that there was a spending minimum to use the coupons I had been given on the opening day...other than this I look forward to returning and trying any of the other flavors they come out with!

Yelp
I'm pleasantly surprised! Puff pastries are made in house and have a choice of vanilla or matcha cream. I make cream puffs at home and wanted to compare, so I got plain stuffed with vanilla. The vanilla cream was too sweet for me, but the pastry part was perfect. I'd definitely come back to try the matcha cream, but I think the other puff toppings (strawberry glaze, Oreo, etc) would be too overwhelming. The inside doesn't have traditional tables to sit at, rather a raised platform with block seats. We just opted to eat standing which wasn't the most comfortable. Also there was a lack of napkins- the cream easily gets all over your fingers so I'd suggest to have more napkins in the space. Overall, happy to see a unique desert spot on newbury. Will come back :)

Yelp
I like Beard Papa's. I am glad it became more accessible for me back again on Newbury street. I was sad when I lost Beard Papa's in Allston when I lived close there. I usually go regular but I tried seasonal menu this time; Frozen Mango Yogurt. The taste is EXACTLY what's on the name! Tastes like frozen mango yogurt . If that is what you are looking for and want to try new flavor and texture with puff, go for it! Worth to try it one time but I will definitely go back to regular with vanilla or green tea filling for the next time! Also they have cute seating space which was great but the indoor space is very limited when you place an order, pick up and to eat in because they also share the space with Teazzi. Also, there is a kiosk to order but not all menus are available at the kiosk, so make share to look at the menu at the board or seasonal menu board if you are looking for something special.

Yelp
I've tried a lot of cream puff options here, but honestly, I wouldn't strongly recommend the mango ice cream-filled one. It just doesn't capture that signature crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside texture that makes this place special. If you ask me, stick to the original cream-filled ones--they're truly delicious. So today, I'm sorry, but I'm only giving them four stars. Better luck next time with the mango!

Yelp
Really exciting to have beard papa's nearby! They were still in their opening phase so they only offer a few flavors. The cream puffs had a TON of cream inside and had a light and crisp exterior. I would also echo others in that I'd prefer the pastries were not out in the open though. Looking forward to coming back next time!

Yelp
I've been such a fan of them since I graduated high school and entered college. When I felt lonely at college, I'd take a bus back home and before my dad would pick me up at the station, I'd always stop at the Chinatown Beard Papa's to grab a cream puff! It became a sweet tradition for me as I gained confidence and found my place in college. Although the Chinatown location closed, I think we all can agree it's so exciting to have Beard Papa's back and on Newbury St. The store has such cute decorations throughout and a nice seating area to enjoy your cream puffs or boba tea from Teazzi (also recommend)! You can't go wrong with any of their cream puff options, but my favorite are the eclair cream puffs with vanilla filling. The eclair options are chocolate, strawberry, ube, matcha, cookie crumble, and s'mores! I'm super excited to come back and try them all!

Yelp
Looking for a unique tasty treat on Newbury St? Beard Papa's might fit the bill! I've heard about this place being big in Japan, so I was excited to hear that they added a Boston location. It also interestingly shares a location with a boba shop, so if you're in the mood for both you can kill two birds with one stone. When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, there was only one employee working at the counter and she didn't seem very eager to take our order. She also accidentally charged us for two cream puffs instead of one, and when we corrected her it took several minutes to fix the issue on the register. Clearly a lot of the staff here are new and learning, but I wish the customer service was a bit better. Still, the food itself was good. We ordered the chocolate covered cream puff with their original vanilla cream and it hit the spot. They have a lot of other flavor varieties I'd be curious to try at some point! I'd also mention that the seating arrangements inside the store are a bit strange.. I'd recommend eating this on the go, as it's not a peaceful environment to chat/hangout unfortunately.

Yelp
This place is so cute! I got the Oreo cream puff with vanilla filling and it was so pretty and so tasty. I just wish there was more seating so I could have eaten this sitting down. This place was pretty packed 7pm on Thursday!

Yelp
Fantastic cream puff and stuff, highly recommend the original with vanilla! They also have the special flavor of the mouth which the frozen yogurt mango, taste like ice cream, amazing!

Yelp
Yay, always my favorite custard pastry. I used to eat this a lot from the Chinatown location which closed down. Very happy that this popped up in Newbury Street. I ordered two matchas and two chocolate covered pastries. I absolutely devoured them when I got home. What I love about the pastry puff is that isn't too heavy on the cream, I believe is Japanese so they do a good job in making the creams not so heavy . Place popular with local residence and visitors.
google avatar

Yu Y.

Yelp
I got a cream puff with strawberry chocolate and matcha filling. The matcha filling is nice and creamy. The strawberry chocolate was a little too sweet. I would probably go with a plain shell next time
google avatar

Naomi L.

Yelp
This place really how to make a cream puff. The filling is really silky and not too sweet. If you've ever tried to make pastry cream before, you know how finicky it can be to get the texture right. The cream to puff ratio is perfect and the service is fast and courteous. There isn't much seating so it's kind of a grab and go kind of place. They share the space with another vendor , which I haven't tried but looks good
google avatar

Sophia M.

Yelp
interesting seating area. we tried their ube frosted with vanilla filling. so good! light and crispy shell with sweet custard(?). ube frosting was good too. a little messy to share. staff and service was quick and friendly

Yelp
Happy I found Beard Papa! Inside small since a lot of people waiting for boba tea- Beard Papa shares the space. Cream puffs fresh and tasted great on the train ride back home.

Selena L.

Yelp
Nice addition to Newbury St. Had the matcha and matcha filling. The combo was a bit sweet for my liking but overall place is a must try. Next time I'll try the plain to balance out the sweetness.

Spilled T.

Yelp
I'm a wimp, so I skipped the opening day line lol. I'm glad I did too because they have more flavors now! The strawberry cream puff is my favorite by far. The strawberry shell is mixed with white chocolate, but you don't get that overly sweetness from normal white chocolates. I'm also a fan of how light and creamy their fillings are. You don't feel that familiar regret after desserts with Beard Papa. Like my Asian mom would say- "good. Not too sweet."
