Beard Papa’s opens in Chicago after eight years away - Eater Chicago

"Long lines formed in late August in Bucktown when Beard Papa’s resumed selling Japanese cream puffs in Chicago. After an eight-year hiatus, demand for these delicate and adorable delights was high. Ownership says it sold more than 2,000 cream puffs on day one. These puffs aren’t massive Wisconsin State Fair-style submissions or traditional French profiteroles, but rather, a precious creation unique to the brand that has become a global hit with 250 stores in Japan and 300 worldwide. Chicagoans last saw Beard Papa’s in 2012 before it closed its sole city location at Block 37 in the Pedway in the Loop. But it left an impression on Hassan Jaffrani, the co-owner of local Mediterranean fast-casual chain I Dream of Falafel (IDOF). He also believes Beard Papa’s will remain popular even during cold winter temperatures." - Naomi Waxman

I can't say enough good things about this dessert shop! The eklers are simply out of this world – perfectly light, fluffy, and filled with the most delicious cream. They have so many different flavors to choose from, each one better than the last. And don't even get me started on the shakes! They're rich, creamy, and loaded with flavor, making them the perfect treat to pair with the ekler. The staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy, making it the perfect spot to indulge. If you love desserts, this place is a must-visit!

If you’re a fan of eclairs, look no further than Sweet Temptations! This dessert shop is a true gem for anyone with a sweet tooth. Their eclairs are nothing short of perfection—crispy, golden-brown pastry filled with a creamy, rich custard that’s just the right amount of sweetness. The chocolate glaze on top is glossy and smooth, adding an extra layer of indulgence. The shop itself is charming and inviting, with a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes every visit a delightful experience. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to offer recommendations or share the story behind their delicious creations.

Google
Service was great. Concept was great. Would I go again? Yeah….. product was just okay. Like it was hyped and then was like it gave just enough effort to just to be enough to be labeled good. The staff were very friendly and story behind the company is cute.

Fun little stop while shopping. Huge cream puffs with choices of filling. We tried cookies and cream, honey, and original. All were really good. Kids didn't care for the filling, but I thought it was great!

This is a classic Japanese bakery that is in major cities. I didn’t know there was one in Chicago and they’ve been here for two years because I’ve been to the ones in New York City. I love how the cream is so fresh and light with a lot of cream inside and there are lots of different types of puff pastries with Matcha or Ube or pineapple. Great location in the heart of Wicker Park with lots of eateries and stores like Lululemon. In fact this beer, papa is sharing the space with Salt burgers. So you can eat food and have dessert afterwards. Most pastries are $4.25 so it’s very reasonable.

Google
cream puffs with an assortment of flavors and different fillings you can choose from. for the actual puffs, there wasn’t any major difference in taste other than the oreos. the fillings had a pretty good flavor to them. most of them were really sweet other than the matcha which had some bitterness to it. the puffs were kinda dry and hard, but we did get them right before they closed which could be why

Had a terrible experience here, including the guy who extremely rude and the only one working at Beard Papa's that evening. The food was inedible: we came in the evening and was told by the guy working there that he couldn't sell the eclairs because "there was no vanilla cream filling left" (which was an obvious lie as he wanted to close the store) even though there were plenty of eclairs ready to be sold on display. We ordered a bubble tea, which the bobas were inedible and too warm (as if they were microwaved too long) that they were gooey/mushy, and we also ordered an ice cream scoop in a cup and it was all freezer burnt. When we received the bubble tea he then told us that he couldn't seal the drink because (here's another lie) that the "bubble tea lid machine was broken". Can you imagine a cup with no lid in your car with kids? Terrible service, not attentive to the customers waiting and coming into this Beard Papa's location. Avoid and the location was extremely dirty.

Google
Beard Papas have the BEST cream puffs filled with creams of different flavors. They have a wonderful selection from original to something crazy good like the Creme Brûlée. The idea of customizing your dessert is fantastic! You pick the shell and also the filling to create exactly what you want. I tried four flavor combinations and loved all of them. They are crunchy and chewy. They are sweet but not too sweet. And they aren't huge so you can try more than one. They also have mini ones. My order: Creme Brûlée w/ Vanilla filling Oreo Cookie Crumble Eclair w/ Chocolate filling Coconut Eclair w/ Ube filling Strawberry Eclair w/ Matcha filling Check it out and enjoy the best cream puffs.

Yelp
It's located inside the same building as SALT Burger & Fries. There's two separate ordering lines, one for burgers and then another one for Beard Papas. SALT has their own self serve ordering computer. Bears Papas has a different set up. You can actually place your order with a real person. But that real person was hiding in back. She approached the front when she probably heard me asking the SALT staff where do I order my damn puffs from? They make the puffs to order. But they weren't anything special. I've had some pretty bomb ass puffs before and was excited to try Beard Papas puffs but they just didn't do it for me. Fortunately for them, the burgers at SALT were phenomenal and I will definitely be back for a burger, and I might pick up some cream puffs again, but definitely wouldn't come here for just some puffs.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
I came here with a girl friend after work. I thought the desserts were alright and nothing too special. I got an original puff with matcha ice cream in the middle. My friend got a chocolate eclair puff with custard filling. I liked hers more though! Service was quick and knowledgeable. There's also a burger/fries joint within the establishment too. Lots of seating. Not too busy on a Thursday night.

Yelp
These were really good. The larger sized ones were my favorite. The strawberry and green tea were delicious and filled with lots of filling. The small ones are filled to order. Decent amount of inside seating. The staff was nice and answered any questions we had.

Yelp
I went in not really knowing what to expect from a modern day looking diner. However, this was pretty good especially for a different taste. You get the feeling of a doughnut by looks, as far as taste it was more breading than expected but the filling made up for it. The taste was very good and with all natural ingredients you can't complain. The service was great and pretty fast. Definitely coming again to give them another try and taste more varieties, but if you're up for something different don't be afraid to give them a try.
google avatar

Yelp
I love beard papa! One of the best croissants I have had. I love how flakey it is on the inside even with the filling. Also being able to pick your own shell and filling is a great option! The location could be kept cleaner.

Yelp
Bearded Papa's sells delicious cream puffs that is customizable. There are plenty of combinations in conjunction with filling flavors! I ordered the smores cream puff with cream filling. It was roughly around $5. It was great but I'm personally not the biggest cream puff person. Still a very great bakery and would recommend anyone to try it! I believe they are also selling new mochi ice cream which I have been dying to try if they weren't sold out of the best flavors. Come to Bearded Papa's and try for yourself!

Yelp
I have heard about Beard Papa's before so I have been super excited to check out this place. While the location is not in the best place (no parking nearby), it has plenty of sunlight which is great for photos. However, that does mean the place feels a bit warmer and not too pleasant. They share a space with The Salt which is a burger and fries storefront. There was not many people working there so I had to wait a bit to order. They were out of many selections so I were limited in what I could order which was unfortunate. I ended up ordering the mini cream puffs with 3 different flavors. I got the horchata, green tea, and peach passion. The green tea was absolutely spot on with the flavoring. The peach passion tasted a bit too artificial for my liking. The horchata had a nice taste to it. I would want to try them out again and hopefully next time they'll have more selections.

Yelp
Crème brûlée was DELICIOUS. Flavor was very similar to a traditional crème brûlée. For the typical puffs, I like how you can choose your puff flavor and filling. Also the employee that prepared our cream puffs had EXCELLENT food safety handling procedures. (Put on gloves to prepare food, wrapped puffs in paper, removed gloves before going back to the register, etc). Will be going back :)
google avatar

Yelp
Checked this place out to have a little sweet nosh post-burger at Salt next door. It was pretty clean and straight forward! You can order a plan original and get a filling and a topping, or opt for one already done up from their selection. The s'mores was delicious and my partner enjoyed his chocolate and strawberry one. As a bonus they also have a boba tea vending machine which is super adorable. We didn't indulge in that this time around, but good to know it's there.

Yelp
Three visits to Beard Papa with the kids and three injuries. Each injury from these chairs tipping and sliding with kids getting in and out. Fist time i reached to catch the child/chair and sliced my finger open and was comped a cream puff. I pointed out the chairs were unstable and the feet were coming off. Thinking it a fluke i returned months later and my daughter tipped and fell. Again pointed out the issue. I went again yesterday and the big joke was that someone was going to fall and hurt themselves. Even KNOWING this was a possibility my 5yo daughter still tipped the chair over and smacked her elbow hard on the ground. They need to replace these chairs. The cream puffs aren't good enough to be worth the risk

Yelp
Beard Papa's sells delicious cream puffs (or are they mini eclairs?), and now they have a location in Wicker Park which they share with Salt Burger + Fries. What a nice two-fer, eat a burger and then eat a cream puff! First you choose the cream puff shell, then you select your filling. I recently had the green tea puff with green tea filling (natural combo, right?) and the filling is actually a bit bitter while the green tea frosting counteracts that by being sweeter. The Oreo puff with vanilla cream is very rich and sweet. Same goes for the S'mores with banana filling.

Yelp
I am a lifelong fan of Beard Papas cream puffs and was so excited to see that they had opened up a branch in Chicago. I usually order the original cream puff with the vanilla custard cream inside. What I love most about beard papa cream puffs is that they are delicious without being overly sweet. I recently found out that this location also sells other desserts such as milkshakes! The Oreo milkshake that I tried was pretty standard but good. Also! This location is conveniently located in the same space as a new up and coming burger shop, which makes this a great stop if you're looking to eat a meal and get dessert afterwards.

Yelp
From LA here, my family was craving for beard papa, so my friend who's also our tour guide brought us here after touring downtown. Menu is the same in LA. Our order included 1 dozen of mini with vanilla and ube filling, 10 regular assorted ones with vanilla, strawberry, ube, matcha and chocolate. They were all equally good!! What I like about this place is they put in more fillings inside so you get to really enjoy it! My kids loved it! Staff are really nice too, place is clean. Also inside beard papa there is a burger place called salt and that one is also worth trying!

Yelp
Tried this on a whim, so glad we did!! Great creme puffs. My favorite was the creme brulee. A great late night treat!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered: Chocolate / S'mores / Strawberry / Green Tea / Creme Brulee / Cookies N Creme. I didn't try everything but the co-workers enjoyed the ones they tried. I liked my strawberry coated puff with green. The pastry has a solid, almost biscuit like texture. If you have a sweet tooth, this is a fun dessert to get! It's conveniently located in a shared space with a good burger shop - salt burger. Employees were very helpful with explaining how to order the cream puffs. They are very pricey at $4 per puff with no combo deal except for the minis.

Yelp
Good little pick me up dessert! The space was extremely clean and bright. I loved the connected business "salt burger and fries." they had deals on coffee for a 1$ which seems like a steal!
google avatar

Halie G.

Yelp
Love this place! It's a quick service set up and they have the options all in a clear case for you to easily see. Everything tastes very fresh and yummy if you have a sweet tooth. It's located inside of SALT so you're able to sit and eat a burger from there and grab dessert also. I also saw they have a boba vending machine in there too so lots of options .

Yelp
Went here after a lunch nearby. The cashier was friendly and it was easy to order. The puff was a surprise for me! I expected to only want to eat half of it, but ended up eating the whole thing! The frosting had a nice taste - not too sweet but still have the fruity taste, the dough crumbled nicely, and the vanilla filling was perfect. At one point there was too much filling, which wasn't bad just not my personal preference, but when having the perfect bite of all 3 combined it was amazing! I loved the combination as it just mixed so well together. 8.5/10 The shake felt like it was just horchata flavoring with ice cream and milk. It fulfilled what I wanted as I missed horchata, but it was nothing amazing. It got too sweet for me at the end. 7.1/10

Yelp
For those who love eclairs and pastry puffs!!! Food: Delicious cream puffs and eclairs - 5/5 - love the variety of flavors of shells and the cream fillings Shells include original, chocolate, green tea, strawberry, ube, s'mores, Oreo cookie crumble, etc. Fillings include vanilla, chocolate, green tea, strawberry (with real fruit chunks), ube (sweet purple yam), horchata (sweet rice), etc. Other dessert pastries available including creme brûlée, cheesecake and chocolate Ambience: Shared/split space between this dessert venue and SALT burgers + fries Service: Fast / efficient, yet patient

Yelp
I love it taste sooooo good I never that had such tasty flavors in my mouth and the service is really good

Yelp
My friend and I came here after dinner at Barraco's, and she was raving about it. I had heard good things but never been. It's like an eclair except you can choose what filling you want to be inside of it, and the outer shell may not be chocolate. My friend ordered a chocolate and the Oreo one with both chocolate filling. I picked the chocolate with vanilla filling. She shared her Oreo one with me, and both were delicious, but it can be a bit much. I could barely finish a whole one by myself. I should probably do the minis next time, only down side is it's plain on the outside. There's many flavors to choose from for the outer shell and the inner filling. There's plenty of seats and tables for those who want to enjoy it there. They have a boba vending machine called Mycha, and they share the place with Salt Burger and Fries. The guy behind the counter is really friendly and made great recommendation. I'd totally come back to try more flavors and would probably share a whole one or get the minis.
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
Fun little spot for dessert. The cream puffs are good and creative (it's sort of a build-your-own; you choose the outside flavor and then the inner filling). The horchata and crème brûlée are my favorites. My only complaint is that if you come late, they have limited options; basically they make what they make and sell out of certain things by the end of the night. In an area full of bars, coming in late is sort of the whole thing, so it would be nice if they had an endless supply, but I can't complain that they're making things fresh, so it's a meaningless gripe. I guess if I really want to try every flavor, I have to haul myself out of bed and get there early : ) Thanks Papa!

Yelp
Overall: A great spot if you're in the mood for something sweet. The good: They stuff the pastries full of cream and the pastry itself is baked well. The flavors they have to choose from are simple but tasty, and not overwhelming. The pastries are well-sized and more than enough for one person, and the staff was friendly and quick. The not-so-good: A little pricey for what you get, and it's not exactly a mind-blowing experience. It's still really good, but seems to be a little overhyped. Food: 8/10 Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 9/10

Yelp
The first time I had Beard Papa's was in an airport in Asia and it was pretty unique. I'm glad to see it in Chicago!! My friend and I were really interested in trying the original with brown sugar boba and the churro with horchata filling. The brown sugar boba barely had any flavor and I think it could've use some more brown sugar. It didn't really match the eclair at all. The horchata churro was like diabetes in a puff. The cinnamon sugar coating was good but sweet, and then the horchata filling was creamy and extremely sweet. I do not recommend getting them together. After we tried the 2, I bought my family some more and myself and another friend an original with matcha and a matcha filling with vanilla filling. The original with matcha was perfect. It wasn't overly sweet and it had a good earthy taste to it. The matcha with vanilla was a little sweeter, but it was so tasty too! The flavors worked very well with each other, so I highly recommend it. My family liked their eclairs! They said they weren't too sweet and we're even better refrigerated. I agree! I would go back to get these as a treat or a unique gift for someone.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
Place: This place is an open space and have some seatings against the wall. I would consider this place a grab and go. Service: The service was good! There was a lot of options and they are known for their like OG boba balls. Food/price: We got the original normal standard boba balls. I was expecting the boba to be more chewy but if it filled with a custard so it is naturally soft. I would say it is a good snack. Audience: It is great for kids, couples, and friends. We all shared a boba ball and it is pretty filling. Recommend/tips? I would recommend if you haven't tried it. It is a new experience.

Yelp
Nice creative little concept in a shared space with a burger spot. Filled the cream puffs to order to insure freshness. Helpful friendly staff. My favorite was the Churro Cream Puff.

Yelp
I had dinner nearby and was in the mood for dessert and there were some awesome ice cream stores available like Jeni's but when I saw Beard Papa's I had long since been near one so I really had to do it. I'm so glad! It was slow but it could have been because it was July 3rd and there may be parties at home instead of going out since it was a great day to barbecue. I loved the idea of a s'mores cream puff and it was delicious with fresh semisweet chocolate covered cream puff stuffed with so much good custard vanilla cream (you get your choice of flavors) custard topped with a roasted marshmallow to boot. I was in dessert heaven down to the last bite. They have one non-gender restroom but too bad it was out of order. They also have another side to this spacious area called "Salt" that serves burgers like the burgers at Oberweiss at some of their stores. I may try it next time.

Yelp
I stopped by here accidentally (was picking up pizza from across the street) and saw Beard Papa's. Last time I had it, it was in LA many years ago. I remembered it being mediocre. So I was pleasantly surprised that this was really good. The shells were crispy on the outside and had a lighter softer crunch inside. I got a variety to try with my sister. I really liked the vanilla filling. Brown sugar boba was good too but it didn't really scream BROWN SUGAR BOBA to me so that's a pass. My favorite was the crispy almond shell and the original. I wish my crispy almond had more vanilla filling though. It was only half filled! The oreo was ok but I personally am not a fan of glazed icing. I wanted to try it anyways. I would definitely go back and try other flavors and their tea! They had hot tea and coffee for $1 but they ran out of the tea when I was there so I couldn't order it. I guess that means I'll have to stop by again :)
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
I've been waiting to try Beard Papa's FOREVER. Since waaaaaay back when they had their first location in Chicago over 10 years ago. Which then closed. And when I saw they were coming back I thought YES. But then I read about the massive lines I thought NO. Anywho it's been a journey to try these cream puffs. I went on a weekday afternoon and it was near empty, but the staff was friendly. I ordered a green tea eclair with green tea filling, creme brulee and mini puffs with chocolate filling. They were all delicious and I highly recommend eating as soon as possible as they are made to order. Especially the creme brulee as the sugar coating loses its crispiness over time. The mini puffs were perfect little bites but honestly for the price I'd probably rather go for the regular sized cream puffs. They have a few different eclair/pastry flavors and different filling flavors that you can mix and match as well as some other tasty desserts.

Yelp
Finally got some cream puffs after having this on my list for a while, but felt severely let down. Parking was impossible. We just ended up standing in a no-parking area across the street while I ran in. No lines today around noon. It was completely empty. In fact, I was scared that it didn't even look open at first because some of the stools were upside down. I placed my order with someone who came out from the back after I came in. Got 4 different ones, honey with vanilla, honey with matcha, strawberry with vanilla, oreo with chocolate. She pulled them from a display to the side and filled them to order. So, I'll start with I've had Beard Papa when living in Japan and an avid consumer of choux. Obviously the flavor options will vary by region, but I found the actual cream puff texture to be so different. These cream puffs had a hard and crunchy exterior and a similar crunchy interior. To me, they just taste overbaked and/or stale. No softness or chew on the inside. Nothing delicate about these pastries. Just a subpar method of delivering the cream filling. Nothing extraordinaire about the fillings. The ratio wasn't impressive. I think vanilla was my favorite for not being overly sweet. For almost $4 each, I expected much more. Even if this texture is intentional, I'm just no longer a fan. Am sad I went out of my way to try these but glad I didn't end up waiting in a line too.

Yelp
This was just a place that I wanted to try out because I knew I wouldn't like it. I don't like any cream desserts. I was hoping this place would change my mind. Store: The overall brand is so cute and unique! I loved the decor of the store and the story behind it. The cashier was so kind to me when I asked her how to order and what were her recommendations based on popular items. So you choose what flavor puff you want and you can choose what flavor cream you want inside. Green tea: So I filled this puff with the green tea cream because im obsessed with matcha/green tea so I was most excited to try this one. However, I did not like the taste of the cream at all. I didn't finish it. I just ate the top layer of frosting. Oreo: I filled this one with the brown sugar boba cream. I was kind of disappointed in the "boba" cause I thought they would be a bit bigger and somewhat more chewier. The cream had a nice subtle brown sugar flavor. Again, I didn't finish and just ate the top layer with frosting. Churro: I filled this one with the vanilla cream but I let my boyfriend have that one. I didn't personally try it but he said it was good (he likes cream desserts). Quality: Their desserts have some quality, I'll give them that. The presentation of their brand and products are really appealing from a consumers point of view. Sadly, this place is just not for me.

Yelp
Never thought I would be one to crave cream puffs, but Beard Papas has me doing just that! Not your traditional cream puff at all. You are able to customize your cream puffs by picking a shell and then picking a filling. The shell is firm and flaky, slightly softer than a cookie. The filling is thick, creamy and cool and reminded me of pudding. You can tell they bake all of the cream puffs fresh daily. I ordered the s'mores shell with chocolate filling and the Oreo shell with chocolate filling and both were to die for! The Oreo shell was by far my favorite though. Such a unique dessert. Will definitely be back soon to try more flavors.
google avatar

Ellie K.

Yelp
I got Beard Papa's delivered! The quality was decent but could have been better. The items I got were: vanilla cream puff with Oreo glaze on top, plain matcha cream puff, and plain bubble tea cream puff. They were all good, but the tapioca pearls were not very chewy and the puffs did not taste very fresh. The Oreo on top of the puff was also quite soggy. I hope this was due to the delivery and trying Beard Papas in person at this location is as good and fresh as I remember it to be from my childhood.
google avatar

Jasmine V.

Yelp
Sadly underwhelming. Service was great. Ambience was clean and minimalistic but the aroma of fries in the fryer from the shared vendor Salt was distracting and luring. I ordered the Creme brûlée and ube with ube filling and the flavors did not stand out. While I can appreciate the choux puffs were crisp and not soggy I wanted more from the filling flavors. Ube is a hard flavor to stand out on its own since it's nuttiness is so subtle. And the vanilla filling tasted more like a diplomat cream with too much whipped cream to vanilla pastry cream ratio. I inspected the custard and not a vanilla bean in sight. Also would've appreciate more burnt sugar on top as that may have added more profile to the flavor. I've tried their cream puffs once before when they had a residence in the basement of the Block downtown. It was unforgettable! It was a strawberries and cream choux puff filled right on the spot with the most crunchiest choux crust on top! I definitely would prefer that over a dipped choux crust now. It gave a waxy texture similar to cake pops for me. Wasn't a fan. I also ordered a Thai iced tea from their vending machine which I had to bring to the counter for the tapioca. Great concept. The boba was fresh but the tea was tepid and overly sweet. I couldn't finish it.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for sweets and Beard Papa's is the place to go to for that! Whenever I'm in the area and need something sweet after eating I go here. Beard Papa's is basically a customizable cream puff shop. They have a variety of fillings and cream puffs shells! Personally, I think my favorite combo is the strawberry shell with the green tea/matcha filling. But you also can't go wrong with the original shell and vanilla filling. Cream puffs are always made fresh on the daily so stop by here if you want a sweet treat! You'll be happy you did!

Yelp
We got the mini 6 pack, half original and half chocolate. They were so good! Employee was nice and kept everything clean.

Yelp
I stopped at Beard Papa's last weekend and loved the cream puffs we tried. The idea of customizing your dessert is fantastic! You pick the shell and also the filling to create exactly what you want. We tried four flavor combinations and loved all of them. They are crunchy and chewy. They are sweet but not too sweet. And they aren't huge so you can try more than one. The girls that were working the day I was there were so friendly and nice. I really feel like they appreciated me and my business. The store is clean and organized. I like that. They offer fantastic deals on coffee and other beverages. They also share their space with a hamburger spot. Next time, I plan on grabbing burgers and dessert. I am definitely a new, long term fan!

Yelp
Maybe I don't like cream puffs. But I thought what we ordered was quite meh. The pastries were pretty stale. The cream inside is pretty good, and we were pretty excited for the boba flavor but that didn't really come through and wow us, either. Felt like stale boba without the requisite chew.

Yelp
Aesthetic: to be honest, I wasn't really focusing on aesthetic when I came here. I was just intrigued because it was a Japanese creme puff shop that I saw in japan and didn't get to try so when I saw there was one opening in Chicago, I was excited. I ran into this shop on my way to the 2d cafe shop. I was so happy when my friends were willing to stop by and give this place a try. The creme puff also looks super delicious so I had to try it. Food: it's a pretty cool concept. The creme is made fresh and you pick a shell flavor and a creme flavor as well. I tried almost all flavors and I liked the honey flavored one with original filling. The food tasted so good and so fresh! It's a good place to hangout and eat with friends. I highly recommend Service: they were nice and accommodating. I didn't really had much contact with them but they weren't rude at all so I'm pretty satisfied with their service Overall, if you want a delicious japanese dessert, come to This place, you won't regret. I highly recommend

Yelp
it was as expected - not blown away. i got the ube cream puff with ube filling and couldn't really taste the ube but it was tasty. very sweet, lot of filling. kind of pricey for the size, wish the puff was puffier as well. overall, don't think i'll be going out of my way to get this again.

Yelp
My wife and I drove from the burbs just to go here. We were craving it ever since we got it in California while on vacation. (5/5) Food: You can't go wrong with a Chocolate Eclair with vanilla filling. Not too sweet. Just right. Hits the spot! (5/5) Service: The staff was patient and nice. They went to the back when we asked what flavors were available. Handed over the goods with a smile. Good luck with parking... as expected for Wicker Park

Yelp
So happy to finally have a Beard Papas in town! These cream puffs definitely need to be eaten ASAP or it will get soggy or the cream goes bad. That's just the nature of cream puffs, nothing In particular about beard papas. I recommend the original, the almond, and honey with vanilla fillings. These are simplicity at its best. They've gotten creative with their flavor profiles but it honestly becomes overwhelming with the sugar and just not worth it.

Yelp
I went there for a Yelp event, but since it was a carryout event, I basically experienced what a regular customer would get on a normal day. I was greatly impressed with this place! Its clean and the service was actually pretty great! There is a little bit of a wait to get the puffs if you order multiples, but it wasn't bad. As for the puffs, they were all excellent. I was worried on the brown sugar boba, but the flavor was great! Its a simple, but delicious concept. My favorites are the bananas foster and the 'minis" which I think is a great concept if you are looking for something a little "cleaner". The only downside is that they can get messy and the box can break when skipping down North Ave. The handle came off and my box fell on the ground. Nothing came out, but the bananas foster was pretty much destroyed. The flavors were there, but it was a mess! Also, they were a little on the expensive side, but they were quality! I will certainly be back for dessert after going to piece across the street!

Yelp
I walked out with 4 puffs I was excited to try: the bananas foster cream puff recommended by the very helpful person who took my order (let's call him Employee of the Month of EOM), a traditional chocolate filling in a plain shell, a green tea filling with a green tea shell, and a s'mores shell with vanilla filling. The s'mores one was very good. I'd asked if chocolate would be too sweet in that shell and EOM said "yes." Good call as it was right on the edge. The bananas foster was good as well, and very mild. I didn't care for the filing of the green tea. It was a tad too bitter. The winner for me was the simple pain shell with chocolate filling. While not as good as my gram used to make, not everyone has an old Italian lady at their disposal and, if they don't, this nails the perfect level of sweet with a nicely crisp pastry shell. I got an order of chocolate and vanilla minis for a friend's kids and the loved them! You now have 2 small but avid fans who keep asking their dad for cream puffs!

Yelp
Decided to get some beard papa on the way back home. Seems like they have a monthly rotation with bonus fillings. Pomegranate is new for this month and I missed the ube on by a day Got the difference eclair shells with different fillings and I would say matcha is by far favorite.

Yelp
I was looking forward to coming here when they open & I'm glad I came by after their grand opening so I had the time to choose what I really wanted.....not under pressure. I would say that this place is the perfect place to come when I have a sweet tooth but don't want something overly sweet. The custard filling is not too sweet. Although I feel like if you chose the shell with the frosting on top like green tea, strawberry, or Oreo it will definitely make it sweeter. I'll back to try some different combinations.

Yelp
Been a long while since we had BP's. 7 years ago last in Chicago and then a couple years ago in Tokyo. This new location is now bringing the same perfect little puffs back to Chitown and they're executing it perfectly. Lots of new flavors but I went with the original and a couple choco to try. Their generous vanilla cream filling is just outstanding.

Yelp
Such a nice little treat and dessert. It's a light and fluffy cream puff. And there's so many flavors to chose from!
