New App, Goodie Bag, Promises $6 Restaurant Meals in Charlotte | Eater Carolinas

"I spotted Beard Papa’s, a cream puff cafe, among the local vendors on the Goodie Bag app offering $6 “goodie bags” — mystery packages of unsold prepared food available for pickup — which helps the cafe avoid waste and recover some revenue while giving customers a bargain." - Erin Perkins

Cute place! Cozy atmosphere! Friendly staff and informed on the ingredients, since I’m lactose free. The mango sorbet was delish and the boba tea was wonderful too!

Do not order online or ahead/advance! I ordered ahead earlier this week and it was confirmed by Beard Papa's. On the day of pickup, it was cancelled very last minute on my way there. They said the cream puffs were sold out. What is the point of ordering ahead/online for something that cannot be fulfilled. I needed these for a holiday party. Luckily, I was able to pickup something last minute at Paris Baguette. Very disappointed.

This was a Doordash Order, so I had no interactions with the staff at the shop! The order was ready to be picked up really quick. It was packaged well and organized. Presentation of the food was also good. The pastries looked appealing. My wife really liked the Oreo Crumbled Eclair, she loves the taste and texture of the pastry. I had the Churro Shell, I think the pastry was good, it wasn’t to die for, but it was good. The pastries were not overwhelmingly sweet, that is a good thing, they had a good balanced of sweetness! I would recommend this place if you are around the area and want a small sweet bite.

Google
I've never been to a place where their specialty is cream puffs, and let me say, this place is a delight. The cream puffs are made in house and so is the cream. Not only is the pastry light and airy, but the cream was excellent and not too sweet. So many pastry creams are laden with sugar that it's hard to enjoy. Beard Papa's also sells mochi, gelato, coffee, teas, milk snow and other tasty treats. I especially enjoyed the coconut pudding by Kokonut with fresh mango (see another post if you want to know more about this company). This place is worth a revisit to try more.

Google
Overpriced at $4+ for 1 cream puff. Change filling or topping and prices go up. Paid $26 before tip for 6 plus 1 free. Vanilla cream can thicker so it doesn't drip everywhere after the first bite.

Google
I want to love this place, but they’re very stingy on the cream inside the puffs. My favorite are the mini puffs because they’re easier to bite. This is the THIRD time I’ve gotten them with almost zero cream. When I lift up the puffs it feels like an empty shell and sure enough there’s not really anything in there. This has only happened within the last three months. Maybe they hired new people who don’t know how to fill the cream puffs, but it’s been a disappointment each time I’ve gone since October 2024. I had to add a picture to show what I mean. Besides that small dollop of cream you see, there was nothing else. The first bite was just shell and the end piece was just shell.

Good place for ice Bingsoo. Korean cafe type of desert place.

The strawberry milk snow is amazing, it's definitely something I'll keep coming back for. I also ordered the crossiant taiyaki, and a s'mores and strawberry shortcake cream puff. Wow so many things to eat here and also love the printed cats on the walls.

Yelp
Love Beard Papa's! The inside is spacious and clean with plenty of seating. Very inviting too with warm lights and complimentary water. I only ever come here for the cream puffs. 9/10 Original Cream Puff w/ Vanilla Filling ($8.5): We got the six small cream puffs! So good and nostalgic. The inside is creamy while the shell is hard but thin and airy. A perfect dessert for anyone not looking to eat too much but still wants a sweet treat. It can be a messy to eat as there's a lot of filling inside so the filling may spill.

Yelp
Beard Papa's, is a very cute establishment in the plaza where Mitsuwa Irvine is located. Walking through the doors, the kids and I were in awe and immediately gravitated to the right where they had a wall theme of cats. Of course we took photos and talked about how the place had a fun and inviting atmosphere. Beard Papa's space is quite large with plenty of tables and seats with additional places to sit outside. The deco definitely gives you the happy feels. It's a cute place to grab dessert and chill with friends. Towards the back is where you will find the display cases for different desserts, as well as the cashier and some Asian toys or items for purchase. What we ordered; 1) Croissant Taiyaki with Nutella - I actually liked the texture of the croissant Taiyaki. It was buttery just like a croissant. It was different from other Taiyaki I've had but I enjoyed it. 2) Mochi ice creams - we had strawberry, which my kids didn't really like. They thought it tasted a bit like medicine. Mango, they favored this one much better. Matcha - it was ok for me. I felt like this didn't taste like true matcha. Overall, based on our experience, the deco, taiyaki and mochi, it was a 3 out of 5 stars for us. I would definitely return, but I probably would not do the mochi again. I may try those puffs or a drink instead. Ending our night out here was a fun and new experience.

Yelp
Super cute inside. Lots of anime-type toys and stuffies. I love cream puffs so this is my kinda place. I love that they are always fresh and customized to your choosing. Friendly, helpful staff. Easy location although parking can be tough on the weekends or during lunch.

Yelp
First time trying Beard Papa's. Cute spot to hang out and enjoy a little dessert. I tried the s'mores and strawberry puffs, both were tasty without being overly sweet, which I liked. Customer service was okay, nothing bad but nothing that stood out either. The place could've been a bit cleaner, some tables were still dirty, but it was the end of the night, so I get it. Overall, good little spot for a quick snack. I'd come back to try other flavors.

Yelp
Thank you so much for the delicious sweets you all make and serve. A friend and I grabbed a small strawberry bingsoo and it was delicious. The strawberries weren't too syrupy! I found myself regretting not getting a larger size but I think it was God's blessings that I didn't hahaha I can become so greedy. The plating of the bingsoo surprised me - in a gold bowl! The service was kind and speedy. There is a good amount of seating that is great for friends to catch up. I love the lighting here.

Yelp
After indulging in ice cream and gelato too often, we decided to switch it up with some cream puffs and went to Beard Papa's Saturday night. I've tried Beard Papa's first in Asia and have been to the Sawtelle location, but haven't tried it at this more conveniently located Irvine spot. It's inside the Mochi Desert spot at Heritage Plaza, which also serves gelato, bingsoo, coffee, macarons, Taiyaki, lava cakes and other desserts (they also sell Sonny Angel and Smitskis, interestingly enough). So if you're just here for the cream puffs, you will have to order in the same line as everyone else that's buying ice cream or toys. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well. Each cream puff is about $4-5, depending on the shell and filling flavor you choose. We ordered three different cream puffs: one with a green tea shell and matcha filling, another with a chocolate shell and chocolate filling, and a classic plain cream puff with vanilla filling. They fill your cream puffs to order which is probably why the choux pastry remains so crispy and airy. I was impressed by how light and airy the fillings were--perfectly balanced and not overly rich, so you can easily finish the whole puff. The shells were sweeter than the fillings, and I really enjoyed the dark chocolate shell with its lighter, mousse-like filling. The green tea flavor was strong, not artificial at all, and so yummy. The filling itself was incredibly addictive--smooth, custardy, and creamy. Though I'm not usually a fan of choux pastry, Beard Papa's version was perfectly airy and crispy, with great structural integrity. The fillings didn't melt through the shell, which made it cleaner to eat. Boyfriend's first time trying Beard Papa's, and he loved it so much he ate the last cream puff without me!! FYI They offer BUY 6 GET 1 FREE deal, that's perfect if you want to buy more!

Yelp
Consistently bad service. I wish there was another location closer. They always under-fill the mini cream puffs. Today their vanilla cream machine broke yet they still took orders and wasted 10+ minutes of customers time trying to fix it only to say sorry we can't. They offered chocolate or matcha filling, but I don't care for either of those flavors and came here for the vanilla. The customer service here is just disappointing.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Beard Papa, and I left feeling more discouraged than anything. I came in to buy a gift for my brother from the ZZZ collab, not realizing it was part of the Genshin/Hoyoverse universe. I asked the cashier (Jamie) politely if they still had the Genshin collab, and she flatly replied, "No, we just have ZZZ," without explaining that the two were connected. I genuinely didn't know and that's not something a customer should be mocked for. When we returned (after Googling and realizing the connection), Jamie was visibly snickering about it in front of us while another, much kinder staff member helped us. It felt disrespectful and unnecessary. Even though the pastries were premade, our order took longer than expected. When I asked (again, politely) if I could get a small box instead of a bag for travel purposes, Jamie told me it wasn't possible unless I bought four and said no again when I asked if I could just get the box anyway. There was no effort to be accommodating. The cream puffs themselves didn't taste especially fresh, which made the experience feel even less worth it. I've never been to Beard Papa before, but I expected at minimum, a welcoming atmosphere. There are so many smaller bakeries that would've treated a curious customer with warmth and a smile. I'd suggest supporting one of those instead.

Yelp
Yummm, I love this place. I have been here about three times now and it's definitely time to write a review! Purchasing these cream puffs are always a big hit for parties and gatherings. The service is quick and a nice place to sit and hangout.
google avatar

Yelp
Picked up a 4 pack of eclairs to go. I love that you can pick your flavor of cream for the inside and the flavor of chocolate dip for the outside. There are lots of combos you can make and you'll find something you or someone else will like. The cream puff is soft and fresh when you order. The size is pretty big so you could easily eat one on your own or share it. I liked their matcha cream the best!
google avatar

Elisa L.

Yelp
Cozy spacious cafe with lots of seating and a wide variety of delicious looking cream puffs! I ordered the original cream puff and it was crispy and flaky on the outside and filled with a generous amount of vanilla cream. The cream was not too sweet and was creamy. I would come back to try their other cream puffs!
google avatar

Allison L.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place when I was in Japan so glad there's one in SoCal! I got the original cream puff- it was crispy on the outside and filled with yummy vanilla filling on the inside. A little pricey at almost $5 a piece but a good treat and not too sweet. Plenty of seating and parking. Would definitely try their other flavors!
google avatar

Alexandra B.

Yelp
Cute Beard Papa's location, lots of seating inside and a counter to order your cream puffs at. You can order the minis or the larger shells, with the larger ones you customize what you want the outside shell dipped in and then what filling you want. I went larger ones so I could customize and I picked Oreo & vanilla filling, Strawberry & matcha filling, Chocolate with chocolate filling, and Matcha & vanilla filling. The oreo and strawberry with matcha were my favorites, but they were all yummy. If you want to take them home or share later just remember you have to keep it refrigerated because of the cream filling. The girls behind the counter were really nice and offered suggestions based on what has been really popular lately.

Yelp
My husband and I are definitely fans of Beard Papa's. Having previously tried them, we stopped in after lunch to pick up dessert. Beard Papa's is located inside the Mochi spot on Culver in Irvine. There are banners outside but can be easily missed if you don't know what you're looking for. I opted for the original puff with Vietnamese coffee custard while we went with the chocolate shell stuffed with chocolate custard. We paid and waited for our order. The cream puffs are stuffed to order. They are baked fresh every day. I like that they aren't super sweet but satisfy that cravings for sweets. The Vietnamese coffee custard had the strong flavor of coffee and it was really good. Honestly, you can't go wrong with their flavors but I suggest you try the original with the vanilla custard to get a baseline. Service was good and there is plenty of parking in the lot.

Yelp
Would recommend that you go literally anywhere else for desserts or drinks. Abysmal service. Arrived at opening and took ~1.5 hours to order, which was fine since there was a line. However, the cashier told me it would be about 2 hours to get my order. So, I came back 2 hours later and was told they would need another 1-1.5 hours?? If you don't have an accurate estimate, just say so instead of guessing. I finally got my order 4 hours after ordering (and nearly 6 hours total at the store), but only after talking to a worker when they skipped calling out my number to found out they just lost my order slip (and at least 10 other orders, based on the numbers they called out). No apologies for the wait or for losing my order, either, by the way. Definitely will not return. There are plenty of other, better dessert places.

Yelp
After seeing this spot come up a lot online, decided to give this spot a shot. We were in the mood for some dessert, so we ordered some cream puffs via DoorDash. The order arrived quickly and everything was packaged great. Now on to the desserts! Not sure if I've ever had an eclair/cream puff and didn't consider myself a fan but Beard Papa's has changed my mind. I tried the creme brûlée one--this was filled with vanilla pastry cream and had a nice sugar/caramelized crust. This was really good but then I tried the Oreo one. I got it filled with chocolate cream. I lovvvvvvvved this one. The Oreo crumble on top was so good in combo with the chocolate cream. I liked the texture with the toppings on this one. I would get this one again if you are looking for something different and unique for dessert!
google avatar

Yelp
Used to come here a couple times a month when I lived in Irvine. Really delicious cream puffs. Fillings have really good flavor and the overall texture of the puff itself is really good! Soft and delicate but slight harder texture on the exterior. Makes a perfect overall bite. Service is great, they work quick and efficiently. Lots of room to sit inside and they have made it a nice place to sit and enjoy Definitely recommend and will come back again when in the area!

Yelp
Came back to try the shaved ice. Ordered the house which is the original 빙수 which was made with from bottom to top...Shaved ice, milk, syrup, red bean, strawberry, mango, kiwi, and little rice cake. Was delicious but have to honest had better.

Yelp
I was craving for dessert after a savory dinner at SÚP Noodle Bar. When leaving the parking lot, we happened to pass by Beard Papa's which was calling my name, lol. They have different-flaved shells now such as (ube, matcha, honey butter) but I just wanted the original as that's what I remember enjoying the last time I had a BP cream puff. Very good and hit the spot for us. Service was friendly.
google avatar

Danny L.

Yelp
Came here tonight after having dinner nearby with a group of 8 and was happy to find the big communal table was available for us. But they have plenty of seating for smaller pairs or groups too. The menu has something for everyone with coffee, teas, other drinks, and different desserts. Kids liked the good selection of gelato and the workers were happy to split a small cup, which comes with 2 scoops, into 2 cups with one scoop each. So big thumbs up for awesome service! I also liked they made sure utensils and plenty of napkins were available and the whole place, including tables and chairs, were clean.
google avatar

Yizhou J.

Yelp
The milk snows are amazing. We have tried red bean, black sesame, mango, and taro so far. All super good. Not sure why this place is not more popular. The small size is actually quite large- good for 2-3 people to share. Great place to have some sweet cold treats!
google avatar

Soph W.

Yelp
YUMMY, SERVICE GOOD, MUSIC FIRE The seating is slightly uncomfortable but the mochi was fire
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
The staff was really friendly. The review is mainly about the food. I came in eager to try the croissaint taiyaki and was a bit let down being presented with a flat taiyaki that looked like it just lost a battle with Obi Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. I'm not even that familiar with Star Wars but I had to look it up because it was way toastier than I was expecting and I'm not sure how else to convey the mediocrity of the food without making pop culture references. The mochi ice cream was good. I'd order those again. Overall, I'd come back again only if I were to order something else like their cream puffs.
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst matcha latte I have ever ordered yet. It was barely a light green with it mostly being milk and mostly ice. My entire group didn't finish their drinks as even the non-matcha drinks were just mostly milk and one of my friends discovered his boba was undercooked. Disappointing experience and will not be returning.
google avatar

Janette N.

Yelp
Beard papa's is my favorite cream puff chain! In Asia, they make the "cookie" fresh but sadly at this location, they only make them fresh in the morning so if you crave this at night, it's not as crispy and flaky as you imagined. However, beard papa's addictive vanilla cream filling taste exactly the same and helps redeem itself
google avatar

Tinea M.

Yelp
Such a cute little sweets shop next to mitsuwa marketplace located inside the mochi dessert cafe. I ordered the original cream puff and the peach shell cream puff with peach cream. Both cream puffs were so incredibly flakey and the cream was perfectly fluffy and not overly sweet. They also serve gelato and other deserts and sweet drinks. This is a great spot to bring the family for a sweet treat during these summer months. We will definitely be back on our next grocery run!

Sarah B.

Yelp
Best cream puffs around!! While it's nice to try the different flavors of the regular-sized cream puffs, nothing beats the mini ones!! Service here is always friendly too. Highly recommend :)

Yelp
I have had Beard Papa's many times over the years and have always enjoyed their cream puffs. Recently, I was lucky enough to try two of their cream puffs for free. I got a original vanilla puff and one strawberry shell with their seasonal guava peach cream. I think my tastes have evolved over the years and I don't enjoy overly sweet desserts as much ad I used to. I really enjoyed the original she'll with vanilla cream as the shell is not sweet and the cream was not over sweet either. There were also a lot of vanilla beans in the cream so you can really taste the vanilla. The strawberry shell was and guava peach combo was too sweet for me. The the the guava peach tasted very strongly of peach, which was good, but the cream was super sweet. Not much guava flavor that I could taste. If you like sweet things and peach, this flavor may be good for you. But if you like your desserts less sweet, stick to original shell and vanilla. The fresh puff shells are also perfectly crispy/crunchy if you ear it right away.
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
Always love the creme consistency. It's so soft. I like the original creme filling. But the matcha is good too
google avatar

Sammy L.

Yelp
Créam Puffs always yummy. Never overly sweet. Its very clean and the employees are so sweet.

Yelp
Love this place! I highly recommend getting their cream puffs. Also pro tip, you can buy a ton of mini cream puffs and they hold up well in the freezer.

Yelp
Awwww.. came here again to try their croissant taiyaki-- got the 3 pack. Red bean and Nutella. As delicious as that sounds they were just ok. Not terrible but nothing to text home about. Just hopelessly mediocre. It looks like it has potential but the dough just does not work with this pressed on pastry. You need to let the layers shine and breathe man. But I get it. It's a novelty. Just needs more development. I'm no saying I have the answer, maybe no one has yet. But this place still smells delicious every time and sells hilariously adorable accessories is Asians go cream puffs for.

Yelp
We stopped by during the Elite Event. The staff was friendly and handling the situation well despite line confusion by the customers. The cream puffs were tasty with their peach being my favorite.

Yelp
If you are craving cream puffs, this would be one of the places I recommend. They do not skimp on the cream filling, here. The filling has a light pudding like consistency and taste. The shell is a hit or miss. Yes, it's light and airy and buttery, but sometimes there's more of a magic crisp than other times. We got the deal that included 6 of the original cream puffs: 3 come with vanilla filling and 3 with chocolate filling. Mmmmm. AND, they threw in the free original, so we ended up with 7 for $23.99 plus tax and tip. They have all sorts of flavors. They also have mochi, gelato, bingsoo, waffles, taiyaki, drinks, etc. -- something for everyone. They also have some cute BTS/K-pop merch. It's cute inside, but I think they could make it a lot cuter. It's next to Daiso and close to several eateries, so I do love stopping by for a treat.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing I had a great experience after a hot day and a lot of negotiations going through. I had a hanger to be filled and this shaved ice was so delicious filled the hunger and chill~ my need to conquer the world. The girl serving was cute too so ie give her tip for being cute.

Yelp
Beard Papa's is a great dessert stop for our family and we've been back here countless times for their cream puffs, ice cream mochi and mango shaved ice! Don't worry vegans, they've got you covered with vegan ice cream filled mochi in a variety of flavors including chocolate, strawberry and more!Respectful service with a chill ambiance fitting for bringing in your laptop in and getting some work done while you enjoy your sweet treat.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife has a weakness for these things...after dinner we saw a sign with that familiar logo... ...so off we went. Ordered only 3 as we were stuffed from dinner. The only ones we always get are the original filling. Those are the best! Light fluffy cream filling in a ultra light crunchy shell. Fantastic ! A must try if you've never had it!
google avatar

Marleen Q.

Yelp
My favorite cream puffs, it's bears papas or nothing. Outside is so light and crispy, the vanilla filling is perfect. Not too sweet. The workers are nice and the facility looked clean.
google avatar

Keycee D.

Yelp
Love their cream puffs at Beard Papa's. I've only known the one in Arcadia back when I used to live out there over 10 years ago. I haven't had it in years and one day I just craved their cream puffs. So hubby went to pick up some for me. Since then, I'd crave it! Their plain vanilla filling is so good. I recently tried the matcha with vanilla filling and it was perfect. I actually got the original with matcha filling and it was just as good. Goes well together, not too sweet and not too matcha. Ive had the cream brûlée and it was too sweet for me. If you've never tried cream puffs before, you should try this place out. Yummy yum yum!

Yelp
Staff: The staff was very nice. Offered to put our larger order into separate bags. Just all around pleasant to work with. Quality/Quantity: Come on this place is amazing. Of course it was delicious. Big, fresh, perfectly cooked, with delicious cream inside. The chocolate one is my favorite. Value: Fair Overall: I don't frequent the area too often but if I do I'm most definitely coming back.

Yelp
This location can get very busy, very quickly... so, if you don't mind a little line waiting, then this is a great spot! The service is fast (once you're to the counter) and knowledgeable which I appreciated. We ordered a creme brûlée puff and I also opted for a honey butter puff with seasonal apple custard filling! They're both lovely treats, but the honey butter with apple filling was the one that was the star of the show! The apple really came through! If you happen to go to Beard Papa's, definitely try it! I do wish the inner custard was warm vs cold, but it's still a fantastic way to treat yourself!
google avatar

Shouka S.

Yelp
As delicious as their cream puffs are, I love their taiyaki here. It's my favorite thing to get. Their mochi is also delicious. Service can be hit or miss but it's a nice place to get dessert to share with friends.
google avatar

Marissa L.

Yelp
Been here a couple of times before and it's usually pretty good. I finished up with grocery shopping at Mitsuwa and I wanted to grab some dessert for later as well. The interior is nice with a comfy cafe atmosphere. There was no line and the cashier was very friendly. I ordered three cream puffs. One chocolate, one matcha and one ube, all filled with the classic vanilla cream. I ate the match and chocolate cream puffs later that day at home. The matcha was sweeter than I expected, but in a good way. The vanilla cream was substantial with a hint of vanilla flavor and the pastry was a little crunchy. The chocolate was a classic and very delicious. I really enjoyed my cream puffs from here.
google avatar

Hiba M.

Yelp
Their matcha is outstanding! They also have this nice shaved ice thing that is very refreshing for a hot summer day.
google avatar

Arnold T.

Yelp
This is a great dessert place to come to when you can't decide if you want coffee, tea, cream puffs or gelato. Why not have them all! I had a small gelato cup with one scoop of chocolate chip and one scoop of vanilla ($4.75). I also ordered a chocolate covered cream puff with vanilla custard filling ($3.25), in part because there is a $5 credit card minimum. My sweet tooth was satisfied with both desserts and they definitely gave me a sense of relaxation. The store itself is very spacious and there are plenty of tables and chairs. There's also free ice water that you can dispense yourself near the cashier. Recommend this for a nice pick me up any day of the week.

Yelp
This place has been bookmarked in one of my collections for awhile and we were in the area today so we decided to try it. This is located in plaza and they don't have a huge sign that makes them easily identified. They sit under a sign that says "Mochi" We ordered 4 cream puffs: strawberry eclair, honey butter, strawberry shortcake, original. One person didn't want a cream puff and instead, ordered a green tea Mochi ice cream. Everyone liked their cream puff. I had the shortcake one and the shell was yummy and cream was not too sweet. The mochi ice cream, however, was said to be too melted (even though it was eaten right away) and that it had a sour taste. While the cream puff did taste good, one thing that threw me off was that I did see a fly in the case holding the shells (see photo), so that definitely made me lose my appetite.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
I used to get Beard Papa's up in Cupertino and am so happy that one exists down here as well. It's located in a shop that makes super yummy shaved ice treats too. These cream puffs are big and stuffed with flavored custard. I love the original custard filling. The cream puffs are very light not overly sugary. I can't wait to try the strawberry one, but I'm so in love with the basics (plain and matcha) that I don't know if I'll ever end up trying it!

The cream puffs were delicious! The shells itself are delicious. The fillings were a bit sweet for me but still good. I liked the chocolate shell the most. The ube was good but not as good as the chocolate. In terms of filling, I think the vanilla was the best but the green tea was good too!
