22 Essential Po’ Boy Shops in and Around New Orleans

"While Bear’s offers an extensive line-up of the usual po’ boy suspects, it’s roast beef that stands out at this Metairie comfort food haven. House-roasted and served on locally baked Leidenheimer bread, Bear’s proclaims to have the best roast beef po’ boy around. There’s a barbecue beef version too." - Eater Staff

Where to Eat in Old Metairie

"While Bear’s offers an extensive line-up of the usual po’ boy suspects, most come for the house-roasted roast beef served on locally baked Leidenheimer bread. There’s a barbecue beef version too, a rarely seen offering. Po’ boys aren’t all, though — burgers, a surprisingly good tuna salad, and apps like fried mushrooms and gravy cheese fries beckon at this Metairie comfort food haven." - Beth D'Addono

The Best Hot Sausage Po-Boys in New Orleans - Eater New Orleans

"Bears is considered by many to be the home of the roast beef po-boy; but the hot sausage, made with Patton’s, is just as notable. Try some crispy, hand-battered onion rings or roast beef debris and gravy fries on the side — you can do it." - Lynn Wesley - Coleman

The 12 Best Po' Boys in New Orleans

"Bear's signature po' boy is pulled from a family recipe that's been passed down like a prized heirloom. The beef is roasted in-house and chilled before slicing and shaving it against the grain, then dipped in an au jus pot for the perfect gravy-mayo-Swiss cheese ratio. Hand-battered onion rings with homemade remoulade sauce are the perfect sandwich companion." - Andrew Parks

Our family of 18 enjoyed lunch on Saturday June 21. Every selected menu item was Excellent - from the roast beef, to shrimp, to chicken and the burger. A must is the onion rings. And the portions will fill you up ! Thanks. Steve S.

Google
I have wanted to try Bear’s for a while so I made the hour drive from Baton Rouge to see what a lot of people claimed as the best. I wasn’t disappointed! One of the best Roast Beef PoBoys in the city. Small and busy/crowded place. My server was nice, but the food takes a while. They warn you ahead of time, claiming that it may be 30-45 minutes. Well, it was worth the wait… one of the best PoBoys I’ve had in a while. The bread was great. The sandwich was overstuffed with tender roast beef and covered with juicy debris. 😎👍

Google
Bear's Po-Boys offers a delightful taste of the South with its signature sandwiches. During my recent visit, I decided to try their shrimp po-boy, and I can confidently say it was a flavorful experience worth sharing. From the moment I took my first bite, I was struck by the freshness of the French bread. Unlike many po-boys that can be overly crunchy or stale, Bear's managed to deliver a perfectly soft, yet sturdy roll that cradled the shrimp beautifully. The bread was fresh and held up to the generous portion of shrimp without falling apart, offering the ideal vehicle for all the flavors within. The shrimp itself was expertly seasoned and cooked to perfection—tender on the inside with a crispy exterior that added a satisfying crunch with every bite. The combination of textures, paired with the simplicity of lettuce, mayo, tomatos and pickles created a balance that made this po-boy delicious. Each subsequent bite left me wanting more, and it was clear that care and quality were paramount in the preparation of this iconic dish. As for the service, I was met with friendly staff who were attentive and eager to ensure a pleasant dining experience. They were knowledgeable about the menu and helped make recommendations without hesitation, which added a personal touch to my visit. The atmosphere at Bear's Po-Boys was casual and relaxed, making it a comfortable spot for lunch or a quick bite. While it may not have had the most vibrant ambiance, it perfectly suited the laid-back charm of a traditional po-boy shop. Overall, my experience at Bear's Po-Boys was a success. The delicious shrimp po-boy exceeded my expectations, and I left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I’ll definitely be making my way to their Covington, LA location soon to try in more of their famous roast beef po-boy. If you find yourself in the area, don't miss out on this gem—your taste buds will thank you!

Google
This restaurant is a must for us when we are in the area. The Ferdie is delicious! The NOLA Burger is so good that my husband had it two days in a row. The prices are very reasonable and you get a lot. Its not crowded, and there is parking across the street.

Google
Son and i ordered roast beef po boy. It was surprisingly dry. Did they forget the gravy? We asked for gravy and they brought some more. Lots of meat but dry. Overall food was good. Cost for 4 no alcohol was $116 including tax and tip. 4 sandwiches plus an order of fries and onion rings. Soft drinks as well were ordered.

Yelp
Absolutely my favorite place for a roast beef po boy. It practically melts in your mouth. They sell it by the gallon which is great for parties. My go to place and everyone I go with loves it. Great onion rings also. Great service and convenient location

Yelp
Hubby wanted a po boy and this was one of the places open. A staple in Old Metairie. The place was packed at noon on a Sunday. We did have a bit of a wait for the food but that's to be expected when it's a crowded restaurant! The roast beef poboy was delicious dressed but hardly had any gravy which is what you want so we had to ask for a cup of gravy. We also found it to be a bit small and needed salt. The sweet potato fries were amazing!!! The servers were very attentive even though the place was packed.

Yelp
Ok Yelpers, this is officially my top choice for a fully dressed roast beef or french fry with roast beef debris poboy in the New Orleans area. Oh man, the perfect blend of mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and Leidenheimer French bread. There is Louisiana hot sauce and Tabasco on the table. The waitresses will gladly bring out extra gravy if you ask. The only problem is the wait, it took 40 minutes after we ordered to get our food. There is a sign on the wall stating the possible long wait during peak hours. By this time my glass Barqs root beer was not cold. So use the supplied paper towels at your table cause you'll need them. Enjoy! Eat local.

Yelp
I've driven by this place a thousand times. My 86 yo Mother was telling me about going to the bar next door in the 70's so I told her there's a little po-boy place right next door and we decided to give them a try. I'm really glad we did. Our usual spot is out of the way today. We were tiring of their debris po-boy and wanted a different sandwich. I ordered a large roast beef dressed with mayo and a side of au jus. This sandwich is the epitome of what a roast beef po boy should be. Its super thin slices were tender and delicious with a hint of garlic. Just a hint! I took it to go so I cannot comment on the restaurant itself. The ONLY reason I gave them less than 5 stars was the price. $20.75 is just more than I can afford for a sandwich. In their defense, I'm a big guy and I'm FULL. This sandwich could feed my wife and teen daughter easily. It was good and good, just pricey. You get what you pay for!

Yelp
How did this place earn 4.2 stars? Beware if you're looking for a good Po-Boy. Food had no flavor, server got our order wrong, we waited 42 minutes to get our food, it was expensive, and the place was freezing.
google avatar

Yelp
Great old school sandwich shop with an old school bar next door to match. Best beef PoBoy I've ever had...actually one of the better sandwiches I've ever had of any kind!

Yelp
On my most recent trip to New Orleans, I wasn't necessarily in search of the best Poboy, but I just so happened to find it. Over the duration of nine days, I believe I ate six Poboys, with two of them being from Bear's. When it comes to a Poboy, it is all about the bread. And whatever bread they are using at Bear's is absolute perfection. It is soft enough to soak up all of the wonderful juices from the Poboy sandwich, but sturdy enough to not fall apart in your hands. I absolutely loved the two roast beef Poboys that I had from Bear's. The roast beef is sliced perfectly, and so tender and juicy. There's really nothing more I can say other than do yourself a favor and come get a Poboy from Bear's. Don't forget to order some onion rings while you're at it!
google avatar

Carolyn T.

Yelp
I really don't have any complaints about the sandwich itself because it's a good, authentic po boy! I got a fully dressed shrimp po boy. I ordered take out on a week day during lunch time and it was pretty busy. I stayed on the phone waiting for them to get my order for like 5 minutes. The parking is annoying and gets busy, but they do have parking under the bridge. The service was nice, but it's in a small little shop. I wouldn't try going there with more than 5 people. Overall, good po boy!
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Really good shrimp poboy and roast beef poboy Driving at lunch I challenging bc of the parking and seating.

Yelp
I've been eating Bear's roast beef for decades. Used to go to the one in Mandeville all the time growing up. The old one. Their food at Gennaro's is fantastic...most of the time. But the prices are unreasonable. Like astronomical. Meanwhile the employees are rude and unpleasant. Nah y'all, next time I'll get a Frady's roast beef and save like 10 bucks while circumventing the' attitude' or go to Short Stop where me and my dog are always greeted like family!
google avatar

Yelp
I forgot how bad the burgers are till I tried them again recently. There is just nothing good about it. Wife had the wings, which were average.
google avatar

Kelley P.

Yelp
Known for their Roast beef po-boy and that is exactly what I ordered. A regular (half) dressed roast beef and I added cheese. My bf ordered the shrimp poboy, both of them were really good. The roast beef was tender and juicy. Service and atmosphere was great. They use Leidenheimer's French bread. I highly recommend the roast beef poboy.
google avatar

Tori M.

Yelp
THE BEST ROAST BEEF POBOY IN THE NEW ORLEANS AREA. Boom. There I said it. That is worth 5 stars by itself. Atmosphere is casual/divey. Go ahead and keep your hat on while you eat, no one's going to judge. My go-to order is the Ferdie, which is a ham and roast beef poboy with Swiss cheese. Yum! I always get mine dressed no tomato. As far as the service goes, ALL FOOD IS MADE TO ORDER because that's how they do things. That means when they are busy you might have to wait 30-40 min for you food. Just buckle up and sit tight and don't even THINK about complaining because you're about to have some of the best food of your life. The quality is worth the wait. I promise.
google avatar

Noelle M.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this place! Although it's off the beaten path and unassuming, deliciousness awaits you inside. They've got a big menu with all kinds of poboys and other options. My dad loves their roast beef (which is what they're known for) but we all enjoyed what we ordered. They go hard on the sauce/gravy, so keep that in mind. Friendly service and quick turn around. Definitely will take visitors looking for a legit poboy/local experience.

Yelp
Great poboys. Just like Bears in Covington. Has roast beef dressed which was great. Side of onion rings.

Yelp
Delicious poboys! Service was fast! A little bit of something for everyone! Kinda cozy place with some nice decor!

Yelp
We ate at Bear's today. Good News and Bad news. Good News - the food was great as usual. Roast Beef poboys and the Maui Salad. Fries were crispy and delicious. Bad News - service was not just bad it was borderline hostile. I think this is the first bad review I have ever given out. When I am disappointed I usually just move on and don't even complain. If I had seen a manager there I would have spoken to him/her and given some feedback. There were just three young female servers, I suppose one of them could have been a manager but if that is the case that makes it so much worse. We had to go find our server for anything we needed. We never complained we were not difficult. But we got the "stink eye" at every turn. I would go back for the food but not if I experience this again...

Peter P.

Yelp
Ordered takeout shrimp poboy, onion rings, and mozerella sticks, and regretted it. No plans to go back here. Poboy was small for the price, bread was soft on the outside. Everything was really greasy - it's fried, I know, but there is good fried, and what I got. The onion rings' batter fell off too easily, and was so salty and greasy on it's own, it was barely edible. I see why they serve it with that sauce, to dominate the grease flavor you get if you make the mistake of trying to eat it alone. The mozerella sticks were plentiful, but tasted frozen and fried - no cheese flavor at all, and that same grease. For about $40, you can get far better, enjoy the experience, and have a strong desire to want to return. Too many good and great place out there. This is not the place for that, for me - not could have been better - should have been better. I went to Bear's across the lake several years ago and really enjoyed it, so this was a real disappointment.

Yelp
Love love love their Roastbeef fully dressed poboy. Such happy belly food! And Best right next to a bar where you can order them too.

Quintin B.

Yelp
Just had a $19 shrimp Poboy from what I thought was my favorite place brought it to my home sat down to eat it and found that it was filled with extra extra extra mayo. I am very disappointing.

Yelp
Not good anymore sorry but bad all the way around. Roast beef is out of a Sysco bag. Can't be made in back ...no way

Yelp
Monday, July 31, 2023 was my first visit to Bear's Po-Boys, but certainly not my last. Bear's appears to be a neighborhood gem where locals come to enjoy great food, drinks and conversation along with numerous TV screens to enjoy. My coworker (his second visit) and his daughter accompanied me and we stayed until closing. Our waitress Alexia was attentive and helpful with service. I ordered a large onion ring appetizer to share. The thick cut onion rings were served piping hot with a creamy Creole Italian dipping sauce. They were nicely seasoned and delicious. For entrées I ordered the large shrimp and pork sausage link po-boy fully dressed, my coworker ordered tuna fish salad on a bun and his daughter ordered the Suga burger undressed and a large order of French fries. My shrimp and pork sausage link po-boy exceeded my expectations. The links were split in half and grilled. The links were flavorful and were complemented with great Leidenheimer bread. My coworker liked his tuna salad on bun and his daughter loved her Suga burger which appeared to be about an 8oz burger. My only negative was that I was unaware of a 4% charge if I used my credit card for payment. I didn't recall seeing a sign, nor was I told there would be an additional charge. In today's cashless marketplace, this charge was excessive, but the food quality and great service made up for the additional fee. On my return visit, I will bring cash.

Yelp
Lundigras day . They were getting slammed but were polite and honest about wait times for food . I had a beer and the wait time was only 45 minutes. No quality decline on the roast beef bo boy in spite of the crowd. Onion rings a must. Old school establishment where everyone knows each other. Priceless. Glenn
google avatar

Yelp
Love it , get the surf and turf add gravy. You won't be disappointed!!onion rings, fried jalapeño and pickles too.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
This has been one of my go-to po-boy spots for years. You know going in it is probably going to be crowded and your order is going to take time to come out. But the food has always been worth the wait. I had not been there for a while, so was looking forward to my visit this week. The dining room was surprisingly not packed and we were seated immediately. Server approached us right away with our menus. You talk about sticker shock. The menu prices had gone up considerably. I understand that everything cost more now, but this seemed crazy. But we were there and we were hungry. Ordered my regular size roast beef po-boy and an order of fries. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time. When the waitress put my sandwich in front of me I was so disappointed. The amount of roast beef on the sandwich was ridiculously small. I mentioned it to the waitress; she said that is how much beef comes on the sandwich. It was very good, but very lacking. I will not be back. Shame.
google avatar

Theresa M.

Yelp
This place is not much on ambiance, but the wait staff is cute and friendly. I was very hungry too, and orders came out fairly fast, had the fried pickles and jalapenos while we waited, they were very yummy sauce was amazing. I ordered the regular tuna dressed, they put jalapenos on also it was really very good. My son got the hot sausage poboy. Definitely someplace to try if you have not before, but it might be a bit difficult to find, but worth the try.
google avatar

Kimberly J.

Yelp
Great poboys and friendly service. Finally made it to this establishment and I wasn't disappointed. I had the surf and turf poboy dressed and my dining partner had The Who DAT Burger with fried jalapeños. Both were huge and tasty. Although I would have loved a little juice or drippings with my roast beef debris. We split the cheese fries with bacon and they were more than either of us could handle. I'd like to go back and get the onion rings. Great spot for classic or unique poboys and burgers!

Kim D.

Yelp
I highly DO NOT recommend this place!!! They are EXTREMELY expensive and the employees are so rude!!! I went to pick up and order that should have been ready at 11:43 and I'm still sitting here at 11:55!!!! This is very annoying. It's absolutely unbelievable. It was no one in here!!!!! I wouldn't give it a one if I didn't have to
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Really good and solid roast beef po boy. Old school and highly recommended. Shrimp poboy is very good as well.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
If what you're craving is an awesome Poboy, then you'll need to look no further than Bear's Po Boy's at Gennaro's! Their offerings taste amazing; my go-to favorite currently is the Ferdie :-) On our last visit, over and above Poboys, my friends and I got an order of gravy fries.  The portion size in a single serving is huge, so it was just right for our whole table.   Bottom line: The prices here aren't cheap, but when you consider how amazing their food is the cost is well worth it!

Bob S.

Yelp
31 dollars for an oyster po boy, chips and a drink . 4% service charge on credit cards , the server should let the customer know before hand . It's almost like double tipping . Go to shortstop , down the street ! Best prices in town !
google avatar

Jas L.

Yelp
Bear's does po-boys! They are known for this and do it very well. The Roast beef is one of the best in the city and the shrimp is second best. Now, when I say they do po-boys it means just that. The fries are mediocre at best and the fried pickles very extremely salty to the point that I couldn't eat them.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
The whirlwind eating tour of New Orleans ends. At Bear's. Arguably in top 5 if not THE top debris poboy in the greater NOLA area. Neck and neck with R&O, IMHO. With some seriously crispy battered mushrooms. Diet Barqs and Voodoo Zapps!
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Solid ass poboy. We did pick up. I got the banging shrimp appetizer, shared the fried pickles and jalapeños , and I had the Ferdie. My wife had the chicken tender poboy. Everything cooked well and packaged nicely for take out. The service was great, they had everything ready for us on time and they were awesome about splitting the bill for my per diem. Pretty plain on the inside but that's okay as long as the food is good.
google avatar

Lance F.

Yelp
Good Pool boys a decent price old-school joint convenient parking right across the street takes a little know how to get there
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Food is delicious as always, but the Men's Restroom needs some serious help!! The Toilet was clean ,but the floors, Walls and Stall Door is disgusting! The Owners need to spend some money renovating the Restrooms!

Seymore B.

Yelp
Hey, service was great, and the food fantastic. It's a great place to grab a bite and leave full.

Sherry M.

Yelp
Delicious food at a hole in the wall place! Great service & friendly too. Po Boy Sandwiches

Troy G.

Yelp
They are a must! if you're looking for a incredible po boy, this is it! I had the Ferdie dressed and a large onion rings. This will be my go to from now on. excellent flavor. Onion rings are delicious. And don't sleep on the dipping sauce for your rings. Next level flavor!
google avatar

Jeremy N.

Yelp
This place is incredible! I came here a couple times and even brought someone with me. The reviews are accurate. The food is amazing. One of the best roast beef & Cheddar sandwiches I have ever had. I would not be afraid to take anyone here. The food is made to order. It is fresh, hot, and delicious. Make sure you find time to come here. You won't be disappointed. I can't wait to come back and have it again. If I'm in New Orleans, I will bring whoever is with me to this location. I'm from Miami and wish we had a place like this there!
google avatar

Glen G.

Yelp
If you are looking for a great po boy, look no further. I am a local here in Metairie. And this is definitely one of my favorites. Everyone must experience eating here. Trust me!

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Bear's P-Boys are the best in the area. The BBQ beef dressed with pickles + OMG mouth watering satisfaction. Premium
google avatar

Jainy L.

Yelp
When the order is done correctly the food is good. Unfortunately, they have messed up our orders almost every time we try it. We use to order here often since it's close to our job and was convenient but I have given up on them. Twice our order was lost and we had to wait double time while they tried to figure it out. Every other time, somebody's sandwich order was incorrect. We even have been charged for items not received. *sigh* We have decided to order elsewhere. It's too bad since I used to love going there but it's just not the same as it was years ago.
google avatar

Gill S.

Yelp
Walking in I was concerned this place was gonna be a dud. Sparse interior, dirty bathrooms, and apathetic service didn't match the fantasies i had of their po boys. Don't think of this place as a quick order. I went when there were 4 dinners sitting down, and probably a bunch more with phone orders and grubhub. I had to wait 12 minutes which isn't bad, but I imagine it's longer during a lunch rush. Try to order ahead if you can. This was a f'n legit roast beef po boy! Not the deli sliced kind like at Arbys, but its like shredded roast beef. The au jus is divine. Its super rich in beef drippings and salt. It's a savory explosion of meat and salty goodness! I got the au jus on the side and i think it's best if you get it on the side as well. It may be too soggy if they soak it for you. These come dressed with cold veggies. I personally didn't mind, the contest of the veggies, but some may not like that. The Mayo also stood out the most on the bread, which i also didn't mind. They give you some serious packing paper that can withstand the drippings. Don't be like me and try to eat this inside the car. You'll more than likely get it all over your upholstery or shirt. Would order these sandwiches again if im in the area.
google avatar

Shannon F.

Yelp
The food here isn't bad. If you want a decent sandwich it wasn't bad. My issues were: 1. Service was below average to me. We literally had to get up to go ask for refills on drinks. 2. It took forever to get poboys and fries. 3. Admittedly I was expecting great food, because the ratings were high, and it was not at all what I expected. 4. Prices are ridiculous!!!! We had a table of five and they added the tip in. I am a good tipper so it isn't a big deal to me, in fact the server probably lost out on adding it, but the service was awful AND you add the tip in? Nice! Overall I will never go back. I can promise you that there are probably 100 places within 2 miles of this place that would have been better. Over $100 for a few apps and Poboys is fine but they need to be a whole lot better than this place!!!
google avatar

Justin J.

Yelp
The Poboys are always consistently delicious and the place has a really down home vibe. If you want a great Poboy, eat here.

Yelp
I like Bear's Po Boy's at Gennaro's and have been there a handful of times. I love the old school feel of the building with its curved walls and its connection to the attached bar room. I can definitely say that I am a fan of their roast beef po-boy and have had it a few times. The sandwich is consistent, the roast beef is piled high and has a good flavor and they do not skip on the condiments. We paid another visit to Bear's on Sunday (11/25/18) and found the dining room to be pretty packed; which is pretty much the norm here. We were seated immediately and our server arrived fairly shortly thereafter to take our drink orders. Since it was so busy, we immediately ordered our son's food (kid's fried shrimp plate). After our drinks arrived, we ordered a small roast beef po-boy for my wife and I got a large Patton's hot sausage po-boy. I know that good food takes a little while to be served, especially if the restaurant is busy. In fact, there's even a handwritten sign on the wall stating "Good things take a bit longer; All food prepared to order... :) ". I'm good with that. However, it took our food 40-45 minutes to come out, and our son's kid's shrimp dinner did not come out any earlier than our food. The roast beef po-boy was as good as always.; however, it was served lukewarm. My Patton's hot sausage po-boy was also good, but the bread was burned along the edges and it too was only lukewarm. Being that it was so busy, and replacement bread may take some time, I left it alone and ate it anyway. My son's shrimp plate was actually a little bit of a disappointment. The shrimp were lukewarm at best, and after waiting for 45 minutes, I was expecting piping hot food. Our server was great, although I cannot remember her name. She was the young blonde in the tank-top without the shoulder tattoo. She kept our drinks filled and definitely was taking care of all of her tables. Will I go back? That remains to be seen.

Jackie D.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were a bit of a hot mess emotionally when we walked into this place after dropping our dog off at the vet but luckily, this place is Louisiana comfort food at it's best. No frills, busy lunch crowd, with a menu full of poboys. Naturally I got a salad lol. But it was actually a really spectacular salad - a Ferdie. It was HUGE and packed with ham, roast beef and Swiss cheese. Combine that with a dipping of ranch occasionally and I was a happy girl. Of course what goes with salad better than onion rings...so we got those too. Boyfriend got a grilled shrimp poboy that was also delicious and served on Leidenheimer bread which obviously brings everything to the next level! Would definitely come back here to try something else next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Fred S.

Yelp
One of the best po boys in Greater New Orleans area and I've tried them all. I had the Ferdi. Perfect bread, lots of meat with flavorful gravy and perfect amount of Mayo.
