The Best Bakeries in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Open since 1968, Bea’s Bakery is a Valley institution. The Tarzana shop bakes up classic Jewish bakery sweets like black and white cookies, apple strudel, and babka, alongside more recent additions like ube rugelach. Located next to Mort’s Deli, it’s not uncommon to see pastries pop into the restaurant for breakfast or lunch, before heading next door to pick up a challah or a few mini eclairs. There are even gluten-free hamantaschen, cupcakes, rye bread, and more for those who are avoiding wheat." - Rebecca Roland

I make it a point to stop in at this bakery whenever I am in town. The treats are always delicious and the staff is friendly. Also, I love the old school vibe.

Google
This IS a true bakery. Fresh, nice selection, lots of sweets, lots of savory. Easy to find location. Tried all their ube and pandan offerings. Love the rye and sourdough bread. It's a gem.

Whenever I come down to the valley I always make sure to stop at Bea's! Im so sad to see morts has changed so Bea's please don't and remain the OGs that you are 💓

Google
I've been coming to this bakery for over 20 yrs now. Love the danishes and cookies, but the muffins truly taste old, not fresh at all. It's so disappointing for such a great bakery place

Awesome selection of baked goods. We hot cookies. Oatmeal, triple chocolate and chocolate chip. Also a slice of cake.

Google
I drive from Ventura for my bakery supplies for parties in the the Valley and L.A. If you like a very good Jewish bakery, this is the place to go for assorted cookies, cakes and rye bread. This review is from a previous owner of our family bakery for over forty years. Enjoy!

Google
We've been coming to Bea's for many years. We try to make a stop at Bea's driving up from Irvine to visit family in the Valley. We love the mini eclairs! The chocolate on the eclairs is just heavenly.

Google
1st time visiting and my answer is... This is a piece of heaven right here! There are so many options. The variety is almost overwhelming, but it brought out the kid in me instead. I wanted one of almost everything, lol! We did get a wide selection, and every morsel was delicious and enjoyed. My personal favorite was the Russian cake square thing, and I will crave that now. I will absolutely look forward to returning again. Yum yum!

Yelp
In my last review, I spoke about how we were told we could freeze the butter cookies. Last night, we tried some of the frozen cookies. OMG - they were so good!!! They tasted like they had been baked that day... fresh, flavorful and crispy. It just doesn't get better than this.

Yelp
Specifically came for the Poppyseed Strudel, had called in advance to ensure that it was baked that morning. Unfortunately it was so stale and dry that the poppyseed literally sucked any saliva out of my mouth ‍. Very disappointing knowing that I spend about $12 on the strudel, had a small piece and discarded the rest. The Almond Horn was decent when warmed up a bit.

Yelp
Pretty much what everyone else has said. Beas is dead. End of an era. Recipes changed. Ingredients changed. We've even got some things that weren't fully baked. Even their new cookies from the new owner that were good at first are bad now. People working there all have attitudes. Stuff things in bags. It's really a shame. Anyone who's been coming here for years will pretty much know immediately. I think today was our final visit. Pretty sad actually. New owners should take note and fix it before it's too late.

Yelp
Bea's Bakery has been around for so long and has always been great. There is a big selection of pastries and cakes which my family have then indulging in. If you live in the surrounding area, it's worth stopping in.
google avatar

Judd T.

Yelp
Very dry chocolate babka. The rugelach is good but nothing to write home about. I'd heard such great things about this place but was ultimately disappointed. Not one of the best babka's in LA, not even the best in the Valley.

Yelp
Tried a new bakery last week was mediocre. I came all the Whittier to Tarzana an hour drive just for Beas bakery is still the best bakery around. I got chocolate chip danishes bread, cookies, and she's Danish.
google avatar

Shana G.

Yelp
Since I've been coming here my entire life, I decided to try it again after being so disappointed in the quality decline since being sold. I was again disappointed - it's the place it used to be. It's no longer a Hungarian Jewish bakery, now it's some weird mishmash of Filipino and Jewish and the quality is still not even remotely close to what it was. Bring back the old Bea's!
google avatar

Yelp
Bea's bakery is amazing! The staff is so kind and helpful- especially when you come with kids. Their prices are so reasonable and everything I've ever gotten has been wonderful tasting. They have an assortment of fresh pastries and breads (even fresh Challah on shabbat) and have cakes and other things if you wanted them. They get pretty busy but are great at working through the line quickly.

Yelp
I gather that Bea's Bakery is considered tops by those in the know. So, I gave it a whirl because who is more in the know than I? Everyone who is anyone knows that I am in the know. Go know. Anyway, where was I? Oh yea, Bea's Bakery. I had a craving for a chocolate chip muffin and so I got one of those, a cherry pastry Danish thing, and a slice of their seven layer cake. The muffin was excellent, but cherry pastry Danish thing was very good, and the seven layer cake thing was also very good. I've now ordered from there twice and shall be ordering from there again and I don't care who knows it. Well, those in the know will know it. If you like baked goods, and who doesn't, give Bea's a try.
google avatar

Dii T.

Yelp
It's very crowded and you need to grab a number and wait for service. Parking felt limited so I parked across the street and walked over. Service was friendly but due to them being so busy, I saw some angry customers who were rude because they got impatient. I got a sugarfree cake and it was dry. This place came highly recommended so I felt disappointed. However, I picked up a box of cookies for someone and they said it was delicious. Soooo maybe it was an off day for whoever made the cake? Because this place was iin such high demand, I'm wondering if the dry cake was just a one off. They have pandan flavored desserts here which is rare!

Yelp
Bea's Bakery on Clark Street, in Tarzana, is a "must go", if you like cookies and breads. There is a variety here and it also includes cakes and pastries. The difficult part here is, what do I choose, because everything looks so good? I was here to pick up stuff to take home and try out. So, I chose something, colorful and in a small quantity. Just 4 pieces of the holiday cookies and 1 piece each of the mini hamataschens (see my pictures). The counter server kept asking me if that was all, several times. Most patrons were leaving with big bags. LOL. While all the cookies were well prepared, not too sweet and flavorful, I do have a favorite (even though my sample size is small). It was the rectangular holiday cookies that had both of the flavorings (apricot and berry?) in one cookie. The piece had attractive optics. It also had the perfect blend of taste, chew and texture. Service was hurried. There was constant foot traffic. Another good bakery find. Give the place a visit and let me know what you think.
google avatar

Rinnita T.

Yelp
Great bakery! Delicious options. Breads, cookies, cakes. Sweets, Etc. service was quick and easy. You take a number ticket when you arrive and wait for your number to be called. I love the cookies so came for a small treat. It was a busy afternoon of customers but the wait was short. The aroma of smells filled the air. And intensified the cravings. Try this place. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Unassuming place on the outside but a hidden gem. I wasn't planning on writing a review at first, since we only got two chocolate chip danishes and an ube white chocolate brownie, but I had to say something. I was skeptical of how well the ube flavor would come through in the brownie, but I was pleasantly surprised--the ube paired with the white chocolate perfectly. It wasn't too sweet, and the ube wasn't overwhelmed by the chocolate. The danishes are pretty good, with plenty of chocolate chips and a perfect texture. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area looking for a quick pick-me-up.

Yelp
Well, Lenny, maybe '3 to 4 projects at a time' isn't the best idea. Are you trying to run Bea's into the ground. I have been going to Bea's since 15, I'm now 71. I go to Bea's every time I visit my mom. I also buy loaves of rye, rugelach, and pastries for my neighbors in San Diego. I have defended the small downward quality in your bakery products since you added Bea's to your repertoire. Well, yesterday I was in shock. Not one previous worker was there. The rye did not even look the same. The pastries looked dry, cakes poorly decorated. I did not spend the $80-100 as I normally did. I bought one lonely rye for my mother. Ditch the ube crackle cookies sprawled on the countertop. Go back to the quality of the past 55 years of quality or sell Bea's to someone who cares. You don't.
google avatar

Erika A.

Yelp
Came here to get cookies but they had so many other delicious pastries. The cookies were all Delicious. The employees were helpful and although it gets busy, we got in and out of there fast.

Yelp
Came for a birthday cake. Upon entering, don't forget to take a number. Your number will be called and then it is time to order all the yummy treats. Cookies, cake pops, and more! How can you decide? They are very helpful to answer any questions. I was excited to try this famous bakery I always heard about. I got a birthday cake with yellow cake and buttercream frosting. The baker put happy birthday and the name of my choice on the cake. It was a nice feature that they write on the cake! The birthday girl loved it because it was her favorite type of cake. The cake was just okay for me. It could feed about 10 people but it was a bit dryer and too much buttercream inside and out. It really had so much buttercream and not enough soft cake and the cake was too dry. I prefer moist cake with moderate amount of frosting not so so much frosting. The cake was $28. The baker gave me free candles though! I would try a different cake to see if I could like something better. 4 stars because of the variety, helpfulness, clean store, and cake was good but could be better. I would still recommend and perhaps order a special cake so that you can ensure it's made fresh.

Yelp
This bakery is connected to the deli that I ordered to go sandwich from so I wandered off to the bakery while waiting for my deli order. I've been here before - there was a line last time I went I believe it was over a year ago. When I went last Saturday it was not as crowded and no line so I checked it out again. This time what caught my attention is the ube selection of pasties / goodies that they have. Last time I only got the black and white cookies, delcos and other pastries. Since I love ube - I was pleasantly surprised by the selection. It's almost one display cabinet by itself. So here's what I ordered - 3 kinds of crinkle cookies - Pandan, red velvet and ube, ube bread pudding, ube cheesecake brownie and one rice cups. Of all I ordered I wasn't a fan of the bread pudding but the rest were really good. I would go back to try the other ube selections and order more cookie crinkle. But I will pay cash if I can - I took a star out because I forgot that they charge a credit card fee. Last time there was a sign but this time the lady who checked me out didn't mention it. Doesn't matter the transaction amount - I spent about $25 - they will still charge a cc fee.

Yelp
This place has been here for years and thank gosh, it's so yummy. My favorite thing from here is their rum balls. The customer service is always nice and honestly it's just a good place. Never tired their cakes, but they have some fun looking ones.
google avatar

Yelp
This bakery was introduced to me as a hidden gem and I absolutely agree. The apple pie had a homemade aspect to it, the crust was flaky and soft, the sugar sprinkled on top really sent the pie to the next. We decided to heat the pie up in the oven and added a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I have to say, some of the best apple pie I've ever had. Additionally, the black and white cookies they sell are soft and quite thick , with a cake like consistency. Absolutely delicious! The smaller cookies are also buttery and we went through an entire box and wanted more!

Curt B.

Yelp
Best Jewish bakery in the city. The black and white cookies are great and they make an amazing cake with really cool flower designs. Beas is classic, it never disappoints and I hope it's open forever.

Stacy H.

Yelp
Black and white cookies are THE BEST, but chocolate babka was dry and disappointing. It was a bit better after toasting.

Tagan L.

Yelp
Full disclosure, this review is for their Fillipino pastries and dessert. One word: WOW!!!! What an unexpected treat to have what I thought was a popular Jewish bakery serve up some of the most amazing Filipino dessert I've ever tasted! Everything I ordered was a hit with some of the standouts being the cheesecake brownies, biscoff brownies, rice cakes. My oeast favorite was the festive christmas cake pop, but despite me not being a fan of it, my 3 yo daughtwr enjoyed it! Now for the good stuff, what we ordered: 1 UBE Rice Cups $6.95 1 UBE Toasted Coconut Coffee Cake (1) $6.95 1 UBE Colossal Cookie $4.95 1 UBE Biscoff Brownie $4.95 1 UBE Cheesecake Brownie $5.95 1 UBE Cake Pop $4.00 I can't wait to return and trust me you can't go wrong here! Just order everythung UBE!!!

Carissa R.

Yelp
Ordered a custom chocolate cake for my fiancé's birthday and it turned out pretty good! The cake and chocolate mousse inside the cake was great but the chocolate buttercream was a bit too thick and overpoweringly sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered platters of assorted cookies for a large party, the platters looked beautiful. Everyone enjoyed all of them. I will be back

Merril S.

Yelp
Bea's was my high bar comparison bakery for the Los Angeles area for over 40 years. I have been there twice in the past few months (though I live 50 miles away now) and noted the prices are even higher than they had been. Okay, I get it; the cost of ingredients has risen. However, with that, I still expect absolute freshness and flavor. Unfortunately, multiple cookie and bun products I purchased were not fresh or flavorful! I especially don't know how they could fail as they did with the cakes and cookies made with marzipan, but they did. The black and white cookies--that I observed to be a big seller--had dried-out cake! Bea would be turning in her grave if she knew. I like that the current owner(s) is/are using the old Bea's Bakery recipes and have added their Filipino ones to the menu, but please do better on maintaining freshness. I can buy fresher half-off bakery items from the supermarket at a quarter of the price. The counter staff are variable in their helpfulness and friendliness. They often look like they would rather be elsewhere. I'm not referring to busy times, either. There are typically plenty of employees when I have been there. I'm not expecting gushing behavior, just some warmth rather than robotic interaction. When I pay the prices charged by a bakery, that is what I expect. I do appreciate the posting of the prices. Taking a number keeps the store organized, and the line moves quickly if there is one, so there is still efficiency. I often chat with others who are there to pick up bakery items for their mostly older family members who have shopped at Bea's for half a century or more. I hope that their purchases did not disappoint as much as mine did. This review is not about the breads offered, as I did not purchase any of them the last two times. I remember them as being excellent, especially the corn rye and challah. I would have rated the current Bea's even lower, but for sentimental reasons, I just could not this time. I will give the bakery one more chance in the future, but won't purchase more than a small quantity of any items until I taste each one of them for freshness and flavor. That means no more purchasing of cakes since you cannot sample them. I am so sad that the end of Bea's Bakery wonderful era appears to be over.
google avatar

Geo L.

Yelp
The chocolate chip cookie was good and a nice size for $3.50 but the lemon cupcake was stale, small, and overpriced at almost $5.00. The service was good and the place is nice but that lemon cupcake was a few days old.
google avatar

Edina B.

Yelp
Great choice of breads and sweets. You can find here everything! Quick and friendly staff! Our favorite is challah loaf! we always get one for Eastern. It's always busy here but since there are multiple people serving the customers, wait time is not that much!

Yelp
What can I say.... EVERYTHING is amazing....for 50+ years! Check out our video review @TripoutwithSadieandRandThom

Yelp
I always come here for everything ube and also the rye bread is my hubby's favorite. We are a Filipino Jewish family so this place is perfect! Great service and even more amazing goodies!

Yelp
Bea's Bakery is THE spot if you are looking for those classic cookies you'd find at the deli. Firstly, the selection here is insane. There are so many options for cookies, cakes and breads. It took me a good 5 minutes to even look around and see everything. They have everything from rugelach, black and whites, hamentashen, passover treats, and other assorted cookies. They even have gluten free options! I was surprised to see some ube flavored treats too. When I stopped in, I tried one of the apricot hamentashen and chocolate rugelach. I found them to be a bit dry, but I think that's just the style of these types of cookies. There are plenty of staff members ready to help you so you can get in and out of there pretty quick. I think a visit to Bea's is a great idea if you are looking to bring a box of cookies or treats to a party or even if you are just looking for a little afternoon treat! Bea's is located inside of Mort's Deli, you can't miss it! Plenty of parking in the lot.
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Bea's has some incredible baked goods. Although Bea has been dead for a long time but they still stick to her recipes. I haven't seen a change of goods, just prices over the last thirty years. My favorite is the long onion rolls, but their bagels are good too. They have a lot of sweet stuff too

Melanie K.

Yelp
My go to for hamentashen has always been Bea's. But I'm super disappointed at my last purchase. The flavor of the cookie is off and the filling seems so old. I don't go as often because I'm not supposed to have too much sugar so sometimes I'll allow an indulgence. Even the chocolate chip horn I got didn't seem as good as before. If the recipes have changed, then you have done yourself a disfavor Bea's bakery.
google avatar

Stephanie Z.

Yelp
Bea's has been a valley staple since I was still going to my pediatrician across the street (I'll give you a hint - that's a long time). They have an amazing rugelach selection, as well as selection of smaller pastries and desserts. We usually come for the challah and more recently, their ube challah and desserts! We recommend Bea's for all occasions and love that they are still around and keep the old school vibe.

Alayna B.

Yelp
Bea's is a classic gem! This past Rosh Hashana, I had their plain round challah and their olive and rosemary round challah! They were both delicious and I'm amazed I got them all the way home without taking a bite! Their black and white cookies, their sugar cookies, and their sprinkle cookies are also sensational. Definitely give them a try. Just keep in mind that they get very busy around the holidays so you may have to wait (but it's only because they're the best).
google avatar

Digby K.

Yelp
I've been a customer for over 30 years. Purchase Challah and Rugelah every week. I arrived at 455pm on Sunday. There was No hello, hi, or any greeting except for Sorry, we are closed. Albeit, a customer left as i walked in, they were fully staffed staring at me and doors unlocked. Customer service is lacking and after reading other reviews there's consensus among other loyal long time customers....fix the crappy attitude Beas used to be iconic your unmotivated staff not so much

Stacey L.

Yelp
Been coming here over 35 years. Sad to say it's gone downhill since new ownership. Prices went way up, quality down. Ordered a birthday cake for my friend yesterday and picked it up, looked so drab and boring and just not beautiful like they used to. Then come to find out they used whipped cream icing instead of buttercream and I was there when the employee filled out the order and I have a copy and it clearly said buttercream. Huge disappointment :(
google avatar

Lindsey S.

Yelp
The most heartbreaking review I've ever made. Like many others, I've been coming here for decades. I'm not sure whether it's new ownership or what is happening, but after multiple visits over the past year, I can safely say the quality and Bea's we once knew is long gone. I was hoping it was just a one-off, bad day for the bakery, but sadly that's not the case. Cookies and cakes are stale, ingredients taste different (read: cheap oils), and customer service is lacking. I'm heartbroken that this mainstay of Tarzana has changed...and not for the better.
google avatar

Robin B.

Yelp
Wow, Beas always warranted 5 star and I guess the food still does but the customer service was so lacking- No taking numbers, ignoring you not even with a we'll be right with you or looking at you and then taking phone orders while you're standing there after you drove over, being ignored ! Not nice
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
I go to beas every once in a while to get fresh bread. Everything is baked everyday.. they start at 2am when some of you go to sleep! Lol. But I must say everything looks and tastes amazing as you can see from the pictures. The service is great too. They take pride in the bakery and they know how great it is because it's been serving tarzana for so many decades. The prices are great too! A must try.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Our families favorite cake is here. We aways get it for birthdays. Strawberry short cake. Today I tried the Ube Cupcake which is the most beautiful color of purple.

Audrey N.

Yelp
This bakery is my favorite! There is so much to choose from that you will go crazy when you walk in! Their online menu is to die before! Something for absolutely everyone here! It smells great, there are samples available to try while you wait, and parking available in the shopping center lot or out front. Grab a ticket as soon as you walk in and then figure out what you would like. The ube selection is AMAZING and impossible to find anywhere else! If you have never tried, I recommend! The customer service is great, the employees do their best to help everyone quickly. It gets packed in there and you can imagine that there are sometimes entitled "long time customers" that come in with an attitude. Recently i ordered an edible birthday cake topper on Etsy for my son's 90s party and I called the bakery and explained that I just wanted it added to a red velvet 1/4 sheet and color added to the edge like a photo I had. Ashlee was very helpful and had me email the pic and then drop off the topper and pay for the cake the day before. Best suggestion ever because when I went to pick it up, they showed it to me and I got to leave right away! No waiting on line! The cake was exactly what I wanted and the best red velvet cake I've had!!! So thankful this bakery exists and I've tried so many of their pastries i can't pick a favorite but i do love their prune danishes. It sounds gross but seriously the best and no one else has these! They also have other to die for flavors! I highly recommend everyone visit this little hidden gem!

Yelp
Authentic old style Jewish bakery. There aren't many left. I come here just for the corn rye bread. I have a hard time finding one this authentic and good anywhere else. It's just like the ones served in the best Jewish delis. I've also tried the poppy seed and apple strudels which are yummy.
google avatar

Elliot B.

Yelp
One of the last great Jewish bakeries left in Los Angeles. Provides bakery to several great Delis and features an eye-catching array of delicious rugula, cookies, danish; and breads from marble rye to challah.
google avatar

Ane V.

Yelp
Small bakery shared with Morts Deli. They have a limited space. So it was hard during the social distancing times. People have to wait outside. Or wear a mask then wait in line with a few spaces in between. Upon entering, the smell of fresh baked goods is calling you. There is an array of fresh baked breads and goodies available. Most of the time it is busy especially when the Jewish holidays are upcoming.
google avatar

Candace B.

Yelp
I have been looking for a local bakery, specifically for pastries and cake and had passed this place a few times and decided to stop in and try a few things. I thoroughly enjoyed the large almond cookie, not pictured but very delicious. The prune and cheese danish was perfect! On the flip side, the petit four tasted good but I do not enjoy dry cake. This was also the issue with the german chocolate cake, though the icing tastes homemade, the cake was awfully dry. With all that said, I will return. I saw some other things I would like to try like the individual apple pie and the bread pudding. As well, they bake fresh bread and it all looked delicious. This place sells cookies, cakes, pies, breads, some donuts like chocolate eclairs and specialities like cannoli.
google avatar

Tittus R.

Yelp
Inflation at its finest, been coming here for years just for the bagels and to support a local business, always get a dozen bagels and it's been roughly $17. Today I was smacked with a new price of $27 for 12 bagels. When asked why the price hike I was told due to inflation they now buy the bagels from wester bagel company and turn around and sell them at Bae's. A dozen bagels at western bagel cost $18.75 which is roughly 1 mile away from there. It was fun while it lasted Bae

Yelp
Wanted something special for the Holidays. Ordered on line three days in advance. Peach pie - delicious!- Strawberry Shortcake - beautiful looking and light & fluffy. Both exceptional. Went to pick up day before Thanksgiving and they had hundreds of orders stacked up on racks. I showed my order # and gave my name and they found my package easily. I recommend ordering in advance because there was a line out the door down the block. Parking is in the lot behind the store. Super busy lot. Not a fancy store but I'd say they deserve their excellent reputation. Will go again. Btw was $60 - pie, cake and two bear claws. Not cheap!

Chris M.

Yelp
Great little bakery that managed to survive a change of ownership with little damage. Reasonable price, great bread, and the cookies rock

Yelp
Always a FAVORITE!! Consistency, Service, Selection... They also offer some Gluten Free options!
