12 Hottest Restaurants in Wilmington, North Carolina

"Located in the Cargo District, in the space that used to house Mess Hall, Beat Street’s menu is a cacophony of global flavors served up counter-service style. Imagine iconic SNL character Stefon — this menu has everything. Smash burgers. Tacos. Steamed pork buns. Truffle fries. Crab rangoon. Harissa beef kabobs. Empanadas. Egg rolls. Seriously, it's something for everyone at Beat Street, and all of it can be enjoyed in the beer garden right next door." - Matt Lardie

Google
Best street has really stepped their food game up. We tried coming here couple years ago when they first opened and it wasn’t very good. And overpriced. Now it’s delicious. And priced right. The quesadillas were huge and loaded with flavor. Same with the burgers. They also have all the good local craft beers on tap. Can’t wait to go back

Google
Been wanting to come here for months, and I just feel a bit disappointed. Maybe the Philly burrito was just lacking something, but it was overall just kinda plain tasting. I feel like an acid, something like pickled red onions could have made it pop more. I’d like to give this place another go, I hope to find a better more well rounded item. That being said - get the nachos, that’s the dish I should’ve went with.

Google
The Beat Street Burger is amazing. I've had a lot of smash burgers in Wilmington and this one is at the top for sure and the price point is fantastic. The only issue is that the alcove is where you sit and it's so hot!! However, there are lots of places to sit outside, love the communal aspect of the Cargo District. Beat Street is a great place for a friend meet up!

Google
Best burger I’ve ever had in my life, I’ve ate a lot of burgers from a lot of different places and none come close. I’d visit NC again just to eat it. For a small place like that to have such a good burger is a crime, they need to be a whole cooperation food chain. This place will never leave my mind because everytime I eat a burger I’ll just say to myself, this doesn’t come close to best street burgers.

Google
This is a really cool place located in the cargo district. The owners of Beat Street are the same as the True Blue restaurant in Mayfaire. Beat Street is exactly as what you would expect from the name. It is really damn good street food that is hard to beat. See what I did there. Lol. Anyway so the atmosphere is a five. There is a lot of seating inside and outside. There is even seating upstairs in the box cars. The food is delicious. We ordered the Kai Yang Chicken Kabob & 2 of the specials that were offered that day “WALKING TACO” & the “BRATWURST”. The Kabob had a great flavor and was cooked perfect. The Ginger Kimchi salad had some heat but not a lot. It was a very balanced taste. The walking Taco was a very playful & creative way of putting together a really good Dorito’s version of loaded nachos. It had cool ranch doritos, Queso, Taco beef, lettuce. cilantro & pickled red onion. The bratwurst was very tasty although ours did not have any of the beer cheese. It was suppose to come with Stone ground mustard, sauerkraut + Beer cheese. It was still very good. This is a must try if you are visiting or live in the area.

Google
This place is a secret that should never be kept. It sits in the heart of Wilmington and provides a cozy but energetic atmosphere. If you are looking for a place to grab good food, a tasty drink, or just somewhere to meet up with pfriends, this should become your new go-to. I have personally had about 90% of the food on their menu, and it is INCREDIBLEEEE! It is within walking distance of most places in downtown ILM and needs to be a place for everyone to try. Really!

Google
I’m sad to say this place was a huge let down. The concept is cool, but they just missed the mark. I get the idea that they have put all their energy into looking cool. We were not greeted when we came in and were confused if we were to seat ourselves or not. The food was so incredibly bland. And not authentic. We ordered the spicy, chicken bacon ranch in a bowl and a birria torta. Both of which need a lot of work. The chicken was dry and unseasoned. Both of the dishes lacked depth of flavor. As chefs ourselves, I hope that this is not seen as hate but as a call to do better.

Google
Got 3 different tacos and they were all bland, and flavorless. I was so excited about Taco Tuesday but left disappointed. They did not have to go trays so I had to stack them in a paperbag unwrapped, just in the little "French fry" trays they come in. I don't like eating around dogs so eating there was not an option for me. I won't be back

Yelp
This place was cute and had yummy food! I happened upon this place while walking through the cargo district in search of food. I love Mexican food and am pretty darn picky about it- this place did a good job! Service was friendly. I placed my order at the counter and found a table to sit at. The bartender at the bar was friendly and showed me where I could get water. I ordered the carne asada tacos and chips and everything. All of the sauces were delicious and fun! The tacos were good, simple with meat, cilantro and onions, and two tortillas. I would definitely return to try more tacos. The vibe was chill but cool.

Yelp
Located in the Cargo District, Beat Street is inside a building made from shipping containers. You can order your food at Beat Street and walk right into the attached beer garden to eat your food. The menu is burgers, burritos, and tacos. All very good. The sides are great too. Everything I tried was at least 4 stars and some 5 stars. Great place to eat while you are on the Cargo District drinking tour.

Yelp
Love love love taco Tuesday here!! A few of us decided to try everything, so we ordered the following types of tacos- brussel sprouts, carne asada, barbacoa, carnitas, chicken, along with some beverages, including amazing tea from Queen Esthers Tea! Everything was sooooo tasty! The tacos are fresh and delicious! You order at the counter and get a number for your order. Then you grab a seat (hard to find on Taco Tuesday so get a table and send someone up to order) and hang out until your order is ready. If you order like we did, you get literal trays of tacos! Then dig in and enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
Taco Tuesday!! $2 tacos end at 7pm (which I missed by 2 minutes, sadly). But still ordered the carnitas tacos and side of brussels. Love the brussels! Staff was super friendly! Would go back.

Yelp
Nice, eclectic spot and solid concept of a restaurant + bar (Alcove) at the Cargo District. The layout and concept was nice and unique but the food just fell flat for me. The lady at the front who took our order was very nice and patient for one, and just had a good vibe from that encounter alone. You can eat inside or out in the various seating arrangements they have. We opted inside in what was close to a school (university) cafeteria-ish small dining area in the back. It was oddly loud, music-wise, and the wait for food was very extensive..but they at least let us know they were backed up. Your order is called up by a person on megaphone, then have to go get your food, utensils, condiments. I really hate that the food wasn't up to par though because everything sounded good on the menu, description-wise. The smashburger was the most decent thing, but I could definitely tell it was a very low grade cheese they used (overpowered). The chips and guac was a a lot of chips to small guac amount and was more on the brown side than green...could have used more lime. The chicken and steamed but was the least favorite overall - chicken was dry and pretty bland. Had high hopes because again the menu did sound good, but too pricey for the quality we got. Will probably opt to other options in the Cargo District

Yelp
Never been here before, lived here a few years and someone recommended their smash burger. It was a nice juicy good burger for a good price. I can't said i'd pay $14 for it but $5 wednesdays are worth it. Sorta limited drink/Beer menu and limited menu for kids. We thought the tots would be good for the kids and quesadillas but they were both spicy. There's free water though! and the area was comfortable to sit in and eat.

Yelp
(3.5 stars) This eclectic offering from the True Blue group offers a killer menu but its logistics leave something to be desired. First, the good: Beat Street has an impressive array of handhelds from around the world. A half-dozen varieties of tacos share menu space with burgers, kabobs, tortas, and ssam. Choosing a side will be a hair-tearing endeavor as ramen, bacon cheddar mac, and truffle fries (with lemon and parmesan!) make for an extremely difficult decision. Beat Street is co-located with Alcove Beer Garden, and there is plenty of seating inside and out. That capaciousness is a double-edged sword, however, as you may need to listen from a distance and over music for your number to be called out. You'll also be in for a wait (30+ minutes in our case): perhaps due to understaffing, the kitchen here is slow. That said, the food here was as good as it sounded. We went with barbacoa tacos and pork belly steamed buns with the aforementioned truffle fries. The fries were addictive, and both handhelds were well-sauced (birria/avocado crema and hoisin/ginger scallion, respectively) and flavorful. The pork was a touch dry but not unpleasantly so, and it was satisfyingly crispy. Prices ($12 and $14) were reasonable. Beat Street's tantalizing menu will make you hungry, and your stomach will be happy by the end, but the in-between may try your patience.

Yelp
Cute taco spot in the cargo district of Wilmington! We came here for the $2 tacos on Tuesday's between 4pm-7pm. I wasn't expecting them to have so much filling for that price! They were really loaded up with meat and other toppings! All of the tacos were amazing and flavorful! My favorite was the barbacoa taco. I also loved the Al pastor, although it was ground pork, which I wasn't crazy about but it was still good. The carnitas one was also great. And the carne asada as well. The alcove beer garden that shares the same seating area as beat street had $5 margaritas for Tuesdays as well! They were really good!

Yelp
Came here again for their $5 Smashburger special on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 PM. It doesn't come with fries, and it is dine-in only. Waited in alcove beer garden area until they called out my number from the window. The burger was delicious, so filling, tons of cheese and sauce. The bun was thick and big enough so it didn't get soggy-almost couldn't fit in my mouth. One of the best burgers. Only downside was the cold bun. The bun was obviously grilled, so it probably was made before the meat and just left out sitting until the meat was ready. Side of russet fries ($5 regular price) was also delicious, thin cut crispy fries.

Yelp
This is where Mess Hall used to be. They have burgers along with several other options. We ordered tacos and chips with roasted salsa. It was all delicious. The issue was how long it took to get the orders. It was at least 20 minutes. The cool thing is they collaborate with Alcove for weekly specials, such as, $2 taco Tuesday with $5 margaritas, and $5 smashburger with a beer special.
google avatar

Yelp
Great smash burger! Good Brussels sprouts Good food casual setting. Friendly staff. Will definitely visit again

Yelp
Beat Street is a perfect replacement for what used to be mess hall. It's situated right inside alcove beer garden so it's a great place to grab a snack or meal while having a few drinks. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful, and moved the line quickly for it only being their second day open!! The decor inside is perfect & you can tell they were meaningful to keep the theme of the eatery all throughout its elements. There's something for everyone on this menu! gf, vegan, vegetarian- there's so many tasty things that you might not find other places- they've brought something new to the neighborhood. My husband and I tried their casera salsa & blue crab, bacon, Jalepeno guacamole. Both were amazing, large portions, excellent flavor and both appropriately priced for the amount you get!! True blue has done it again by opening another must eat at restaurant in the Wilmington area!!

Yelp
Our new favorite spot! Especially on Wednesdays! (Iykyk) Great atmosphere/ service/ all around go to. The kind of place you take your friends when they come visit cause it's your fave and how can you not!

Theodore M.

Yelp
it's real nice Pork belly steam buns yummy its a really cool building in the cargo district

Gary D.

Yelp
Service was good my wife and the grandkids got the tacos which they liked. I purchased the Bad Ass Burrito which seems funny to say, but it was too big. It was hard to handle. They put some gooey sauce on the top and sides which made the soft burrito to fall apart. It was literally "a hot mess" and not enjoyable. I don't think I will be returning.

Yelp
Very relaxed environment with good vibes. Staff was very friendly and helpful with any of my questions. Food was fast and tasty.

Yelp
Such a cool space in the middle of town. I had no clue we had this here in Wilmington and it's definitely somewhere I will come back. In my opinion it is somewhere you would go to get a casual drink during the weeknight or even early afternoon weekend. It's very laidback and the food wasn't bad. The only drawback was that the bun to the burger was so huge it took away from the flavors and everything else on it. I had to take one of the buns off it just to actually eat it because I felt like I was eating all bread, but the fries were delicious. You can bring your dogs, kids, and there's a pretty good amount of seating. You can always walk up the street to another local bar if you want too. Will definitely go back.

Ellen C.

Yelp
Decided to hit this place after a quick search for tacos on google, super glad we did! Even though it was a busy Saturday evening the service was fantastic and there was plenty of seating, the food was incredible as well, highly recommend the barbacoa tacos and if you're particularly hungry the Big Ass Burrito is definitely the choice. Also if they have the chorizo dog as a special, get it! We enjoyed our visit and will be back!

Yelp
You order at the counter. Very casual spot in the cargo district. The woman at the counter was pleasant. You get a receipt with a number and they call your number at a window to grab your food. Service was good for the type of setup they had but it did take about 20 minutes for our food. The food was kinda pricy and while the flavor was great, I had a really gross piece of meat in my taco. Luckily that was my last taco. I bit down and it was hard and hurt my tooth. It was a bone or hard tendon. If hat didn't happen, I'd be writing a much different review. My husband had no issues and enjoyed his food. He had the corn as well. Other than the gross piece of meat, the only other downfall is they didn't have any tap or bottled water. We got a glass from the bar as instructed.

Amanda T.

Yelp
Let me tell you I CRAVE their barbacoa tacos. They have an avocado lime cream on top with cotija cheese and cilantro and onion and a shaved radish circle. Seriously I have to get these tacos at least once every other week or so. Their elote is very good too. And you can get a drink from alcove in a really cool spot. 1000% recommend.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
I have never ordered anything off the menu I did not like. Amazing food and great variety. My friends and I share sides when we go because the portions are large. Highly recommend the smash burger, chips & queso, and brussels sprouts.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch while exploring the Cargo District. Such an expansive and cool vibe here! I ordered the rotisserie smoked chicken tacos with a side of their queso blanco to try. The tacos were a unique blend of delish, large amounts of rotisserie chicken with coriander, salsa Verde, and cotija cheese all rolled up into double corn tortillas. Their queso blanco was the smoothest tasty blend of cotija cheese, hatch chilis, and pickled jalapeño I'll probably ever have! The staff helped me pick out the perfect late lunch. And you can't beat the upstairs loft like outdoor seating on such a beautiful warm day.

Kacie D.

Yelp
Food was good, tacos were small though. We didn't get drinks but it looks like they have a nice menu and bar space.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for the first time today. We ordered the brussel sprout tacos, pork belly buns, and calabrian guacamole. Brussel sprout tacos: these were pretty good! I wish the brussel sprouts were a little crispier, but they were still very tasty. They're also pretty spicy so keep that in mind if you don't love spicy food. The calabrian guacamole goes so well with these as a topping. Pork belly buns: Very good! The pickled daikon is such a nice touch to these. Just wish the pork belly was crispier, but overall very good! Calabrian guacamole: SO GOOD! This was definitely our favorite out of everything we ordered. The goat cheese is such a nice touch and this guacamole really goes great with the chips or as a topping to their tacos. Loved it! We felt everything was reasonably priced and the staff seemed very friendly! We would definitely come back.

Tim D.

Yelp
We didn't get to experience the service since they close stainless down before their posted hours with a full restaurant and bar.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Great place and very good food. Hopefully they will have live music going forward. Hamburger was great as well as the chips and guacamole. Great place to hang out!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD, a must try!!! Great atmosphere with quick and friendly service! A wonderful addition to the True Blue family. Chef Kevin rocks!!!
google avatar

Carin B.

Yelp
I've been there 2x and sorry to say this but the food is awful! I'm done going there, tonight I ordered the lamb kabob and fries and they both were not edible The fries were incredibly over salted it ruined their taste The lamb kabob was fried to death and didn't taste like lamb at all, food was thrown on a foam plate and it looked so unappetizing There is no attention to detail it's just a greasy spoon I returned my dinner and got refunded not worth the $13 charge I came home smelling like grill smoke Can't wait for the Mess Hall to reopen! Sorry no pics it wasn't worth remembering Steer clear
google avatar

Mona L.

Yelp
Came to Wilmington today for a doc appointment. Decided to try something new, so I hit Yelp and started looking. Found this place by accident. The decor is industrial and hippie at the same time. Wasn't sure what to order but went with a kabob called the KaiYang (see below). Good flavor of spicy and citrus that I got a side of fries with. It was so good! The staff are amazing, helpful and super nice. Came away with a full belly and a cat pen. Random, but I have a lot of cats and they said I could steal the pen. Totally recommend anything on the menu. Everyone around me looks well satiated. Open atmosphere with Wi-Fi and room to hang out and chat over a delicious meal! Perfect lunch spot!
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
Beat Street's smash burger is next level! Oh, those crispy bacon pieces in the beef mix! Enjoyed with their great fries and a Spindrift drink in the cool area of the cargo shops!
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
They have some delicious tacos ! The carne asada great and the barbacos are my favorite . They know how to season their food unlike some people ! Street corn was also good too . Will be going back soon

Ayana M.

Yelp
Bartenders were rude, took forever to just get tacos, empanadas were mediocre, chicken tacos are the only thing keeping this place together.
google avatar

Carol F.

Yelp
Ordered a pork torta. It was so moist and tasty. I normally don't order a sandwich but so glad I did. The bun which I did not expect was huge. Wish I took a pic. The queso sauce or cream sauce or mayo (not sure what it was ) was amazing.
google avatar

megan l.

Yelp
Just not good. Tough meat. Overpriced. You can aspire to street tacos but cilantro, overcooked meat. Does not a taco make
google avatar

Rose A.

Yelp
This place needs to get their act together. Super inconsistent and largely subpar due to cold, soggy and overcooked food. Stunningly badly run. Pls fix bc when it's good it's very good, just not most of the time...

Ben Y.

Yelp
Super friendly service. The food was really good as well. It's perfect as far as portions go. You leave the restaurant feeling really good. Also the place is a total vibe. Love it and will be back soon!

Tum M.

Yelp
food was par, ambiance had a good vibe, little man with blonde hair behind the food bar that calls out orders was butt drip. Dish room would suit him better, he doesn't need to be an upfront guy. The group I was with as well as myself will not be coming back to this place. It's sad to think that the level of service this little nut sack provides for Beat Street is what they consider acceptable to put up front as their first impression!!

Tonya T.

Yelp
We love Beat Street! The food is amazing and the atmosphere is fun and relaxing! Dean made our table's night! Dean, thank you for always going above and beyond for the customers! Thank you for being patient when we don't hear your name correctly over the fun music! You're the best!
google avatar

Debbie S.

Yelp
Over priced and mediocre flavors, highly disappointed from a brand of restaurants that I greatly enjoy. Seriously..$50 for 2 people, tacos, guacamole and queso? No beer, just 2 cans of sparkling water. Guacamole tasted like it was made with frozen avocados and way too much lime juice, queso was a form of velveeta with some hot sauce, not what I expected. There are many other choices for tacos in town, this one isn't on my list anymore.

Norberto P.

Yelp
Rather go to Burger King and Taco Bell. Prices are pretty high, asking gratuity and even worst, they want you to clean the table before leaving. For the price paid all this should be included. Visited once and never again.
google avatar

Ian B.

Yelp
Staff is friendly, welcoming & patient while we looked over the menu. Smash burger was awesome, perfectly seasoned. This isn't a drive-thru burger, this is a culinary delight! Carnitas were phenomenal! Found this place by accident but definitely a new favorite in Wilmington! Nothing left to photo, sorry! Next time!
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
We've been here a few times mid-week for lunch and drinks and have always had a good experience. Stoked to find a cool place to hang out. On this Friday night we brought friends for a chill evening only to have someone announcing orders on A BULL HORN. We waited 25 min for chips and salsa and couldn't converse because we were interrupted by, I'll say it again, A LITERAL BULLHORN every minute or so. No idea whose idea this was but, wow, it was a bad one. Just get a LED board that runs the orders maybe? Won't be back.

Madison W.

Yelp
This place is a vibe!!!!!! FOOD IS TO DIE FOR! Cooks did an amazing job!!!! The girl a the front was very sweet and helped us out picking what was best on the menu. We got 6 meals off the menu and only came out to be 58 dollars. Great price for delicious food!

Cole B.

Yelp
Cold food, rude cash register lady

Sammy L.

Yelp
goodness golly miss molly! LOVE this place! mckayla had me JAMMING with her music taste! never again will i not appreciate slow dive. great tunes & great eats!

L. K.

Yelp
Awesome burgers...especially on Wednesdays for $5- and also their fries are amazing as well ! Seated outside with a drink from Alcove was the perfect night!!

Carmen S.

Yelp
Ordered the smoked pork tacos listed for $11. she charged me $14. When I advised her she overcharged me she said the price on the menu was wrong and refused to honor it. So buyer beware: apparently the menu prices mean nothing. Talk about leaving a bad taste in your mouth! I ended up ordering the $14 pork belly hand held. Big salad and fries with small pork buns with 2 tiny cubes of pork belly in each. But I admit, after paying more than I wanted for lunch, I probably wasn't going to be very happy.

Cecelia H.

Yelp
Food was way overpriced for the taste. The meat, bread, and chips were extremely dry with not much flavor. The cargo area is a great area which usually has great food- but not this place. I would not recommend.

Kelly A.

Yelp
Don't waste your time or money! We were beyond disappointed. The food was awful and the service even worse. The Alcove is a fun ambiance but the rest was a FAIL!
