New Zealand Is the World's Next Hot Food Destination

"I visited Beau, the Auckland wine bar and deli run by Diva Giles and chef Logan Birch, where the owners talk about whakapapa — a layering of influences — and merge their British and Māori backgrounds with techniques and flavors learned in London, Paris, and from Filipino and Indian colleagues, producing dishes such as a pan‑fried bluenose with squid‑ink fregola." - Jeff Chu Jeff Chu Jeff Chu is an editor-at-large at Travel + Leisure. We were late walk ins with just 30 minutes away from closing. In spite of the time constraints the staff was super friendly. Ordered the Brown Butter Gnocchi and the Market Fish. I usually do not like pasta but the Gnocchi was perfect. The fish was perfectly cooked with some interesting toppings of rice crisps. I was not sure about the other seafood that was part of the dish/sauce. The wine list is well curated. The ambience of the place is casual and friendly. Would definitely go back to try the other dishes.

Food was good overall however didn’t appreciate how they threw out our takeaway as I left behind for not longer than 5 min. We barely touched our chicken liver parfait… 🥲

Our fav to go for a special occasion. They don't take small bookings but got us in for our wedding anniversary. Josh and the crew are friendly, attentive and are happy to recommend wine and dishes. Also try the Trust the Chef- value for money and always so filling and tasty.

So delicious! The lamb melted off the bone. The dishes we tried all tasted great. We came in before dinner time for a light snack, and everything was so good that we had to come back to finish off the night with more lovely food. The energy was relaxed and friendly, and the staff were all lovely. Thanks Beau! Josh specifically took great care of us!

Managed to get the last table walk-in on a Friday evening. Great food. Recommend the oysters, lamb ribs, and the cauliflower. (2022) Updated 2025-01: Visited Beau again on a weekday evening. Food and service were excellent. The lamb ribs and cauliflower are superb. We got the Prawn PoBoys but felt it was just mediorcre. Beef ribs was alright as well, though I especially liked the plated mash underneath the meat - quite flavorful and unique. In summary, I would recommend to stick with the former. Wine by glass selection was great and allowed tasting before choosing to go with a particular, which is very much appreciated.

We had the most gorgeous lunch here for our anniversary. The staff were super friendly, helpful, and the food was better than some of the restaurants we'd eaten at in London and Europe (I've had my fair share of badly prepared octopus). All the ingredients tasted fresh and were well executed. We were too full to fit in dessert this time around, but nothing is stopping us from visiting again to try the sweet selection.

I had heard great things about Beau but our dinner and drinks on Friday night exceeded all expectations. The lamb ribs were the standout dish (you must try them), the prawn po boy was great and the classic margaritas were so good we ended up purchasing a couple each. Highly recommend to all. Updated Comment: Everything’s over-salted, the liver parfait is still good with the softer baguette when compared to previous visits (which makes it better), and that the service is still top notch. Original Comment: We sampled the oysters, grilled cauliflower, chicken liver parfait, and finished with the chocolate dessert. Unfortunately, the oysters were a let-down. Despite their price, they contained shell fragments, and the flavour fell short. The dessert, while rich, leaned too bitter with a tangy edge from the crème fraîche. It would have paired perfectly with coffee, but since the deli was closed, no coffee was available — an unfortunate end to the meal. On a brighter note, the grilled cauliflower was exceptional. The flavours were perfectly balanced, and the texture was spot-on. As for the chicken liver parfait, while its pink hue may not have been the most visually appealing, the taste was phenomenal, especially when paired with the toasted baguette. These dishes is an absolute must-try. The service was outstanding, with the staff being attentive throughout. I’ll definitely be returning for a special occasion—simply amazing!
