For Chef Risa Lichtman, Cooking for Rosh Hashanah Is a Way to Reconnect With — and Redefine — Her Faith | Eater Portland

"Once one of Portland’s few Jewish culinary hubs, Beetroot Market is mentioned as a local spot where Lichtman worked and that the city has since lost, underscoring the shrinking Jewish food scene in the area." - Janey Wong

I don't know what to say besides I don't enjoy coming here anymore. There is a statistical correlation between areas that provide bottle drops and crime. I don't consider this a neighborhood store anymore; it is a detriment to our neighborhood. While I do have compassion for folks who are in a place where they must collect other peoples' garbage in order to get by, I think it is fair to admit that as a neighbor to this business I do not feel good seeing campers parked here, litter, crowds, second-hand smoke, and pushing past folks who are coming for an entirely different service. I don't know the solution- I will admit that. But I also did not sign up for living next to a day center.

What just happened? Make full eye contact with employee to no greet(which other customers got). I'm in a large parka and boots. Think about how you dress before you come in you will be judged. Edit* Apparently this red headed employee is known for their service as made clear in other the reviews which only serve to validate my terrible experience

There is no bulk section! The website is totally false. Maybe they had one in the past but there's one attendant at 10:00 at night and he knows nothing about it. I made a trip here for nothing. This is NOT a natural food store.

I had avoided this market for years due to unfriendly service, which is echoed by neighbors where I live close to the store. I had to go there today to get something quickly and once again incredibly unfriendly service at the register. The little guy was put out to help me find something in the store - just left me in the aisle and essentially said "find it yourself" - and then cold and dismissive as he checked me (and the woman in front of me and the guy behind me) out and seemed put out when I asked if I could bag my own groceries after he made zero motion to do it himself. (Like you can't win - we are gonna not bag your groceries and then grunt at you if you ask if you can). If they want more customers beyond 8th graders who buy treats before and after school maybe they should be a little bit friendly to the adults who live in the neighborhood who can afford to rack up real grocery bills there. I'm doing you a favor by writing this review because maybe something will change. You guys are kinda notorious with neighbors. This is NOT a friendly neighborhood store at all. Just a tiny bit of kindness at the register would help your reputation a lot. There are a million 25-to-35 year old young women in Portland who could provide decent customer service at the register and would do much better at bringing in more customers than the trolls you currently have. Will try again in a couple of years but no thanks. I literally would have spent thousands in there if there was even a tiny bit of friendliness.

I was at the store and a very nice young man named Andrew helped me find some navy beans. I told him not to bother but he helped anyway. What a polite employee! Thank you for hiring kind people to help little old ladies like myself!! Sharon S

Great for picking up a missing pantry item. Also has a decent beer selection

Nice employees. Expensive. The increased activity around the recycling machines has led to some behaviors that make the parking lot feel less safe and comfortable for customers. Specifically, I've noticed issues like people loitering, blocking access to parking spots or the store entrance, and sometimes engaging in disruptive behavior. This makes me, and likely other customers, feel uneasy when trying to use the parking lot. Perhaps there are ways to manage the area to ensure a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone?
