Honestly, we had uncertain expectations walking in. The service was great, very friendly and hospitable. The problem was the food. My mashed potatoes were gritty and cold (yes I understand they are handmade from real potatoes). The potato soup was oddly sweet and the potatoes were not consistently cooked. My steak bites were also sweet, which wasn’t terrible, I just don’t like sweet meat like I know lots of people do. In short, the people that go here, love it, and it was packed the whole time we were there. We just won’t be back.

I love small town buffets and this one has to be the best i have ever had! The buffet here was amazing! All the food was great and the proce was very affordable! The server was very friendly also!

Google
Nice hole in the wall restaurant, The service was a bit slow, as for the food the steak I got was really good lots of flavor and cooked to what I asked for. The only thing that was disappointing was the appetizers they were way too dry and had no flavor, so please skip the appetizers if you decide to go.

Google
Such a wonderful place. Everyone is friendly and service is welcoming. We have eaten here several times and enjoyed our visits. This time we had the lunch buffet and some appetizers. The lunch buffet is fresh. Fried chicken and steaks are juicy and flavorful. The fried onions rings and mushrooms are amazing. The salad bar is fresh and the green chili soup had a good amount of spice. The Cajun fried okra was whole okra and tasted amazing. The stuffed jalapeños with cream cheese and a good portion of bacon were also spot on, watch out some can be hot!

I have to say … wow. What the heck Beefmasters?!? Great food! We ordered the special which was the steaks for two dinner. A mountain of beef steak and got the biggest sweet potatoes ever. I have to say this was a deal and delicious. We will come back through and do this again. We stopped and it’s a cute little shop with a ton of character. Love the hot point stove and the everything. Thanks. Mmmmm go eat

Google
Small West Texas steakhouses are true hidden gems in the state. Beefmaster is no exception. If you didn't know it was there it is very easy to miss even with Google we had to turn around because we drove past it. But if you have the patience you will be rewarded with some awesome steaks nice tender and perfectly cooked. Fair warning if you get the mesquite wood grilled steak it will have a strong flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed it my wife not as much. The good news is you can get them cooked on a flat iron instead of mesquite in case you're worried the flavor will be too strong. The onion rings were piled high and cooked amazingly nice and crispy with a little bit of char on the onion. Well worth a stop if you find yourself in the great big metropolis of Ballinger

Yelp
Waited 10 minutes after seating. Never got served a menu or drinks. The name makes you think it's a steakhouse, but it's really just a small town buffet with poor service

Chris C.

Yelp
Great Service but even Better food. The meat is cut fresh daily, and you could taste the difference.

Yelp
I wasn't going to give a review of this place because I figured the food would be average, but I ordered a jalapeño burger with fries. The burger was awesome, though the meat Patti maybe could've been a little more moist. The fries were simply the best french fries I've ever tasted!

Yelp
Do not let the exterior of this hidden gem fool you, the food is amazing! All the wait staff were so sweet and it's such a laid back atmosphere. Hole in the wall, perfectly cooked steaks and scratch made desserts. In the middle of nowhere where

Yelp
What an incredible place. We will most definitely reroute our future trips just to stop at this amazing place!

Yelp
This small town restaurant is a diamond in the rough. It offers an old-time feel with great food and sweet waitresses. The prices are sure to keep you coming back. We will definitely stop by again.

Yelp
It's so good I have been there many times I had the best experience there. There bacon cheese burger is the best one in my experience

Yelp
We got the following: Salad bar, which was good. Grilled chicken sandwich which was good. We got the onion rings which were great. The baked potato was loaded with cheese, bacon bits, butter, and scallions which were great. Ribeye medium rare which was great and took home the butter finger pie which was great! You have to go find this place, it is easy to miss but it is near the hospital I believe. I would go out of my way to go back to this place because it was very good. The place looks like a dump on the outside and the men's room is tiny to impossible to utilize.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
The food is excellent. They have a daily buffet that has plenty of choices. The steaks are great and the chicken fried steak does not have too much breading. Their deserts are great also.

Yelp
Worth the drive out from San Angelo. Great buffet and salad bar. The steak is always done right. Staff is friendly, courteous and helpful.

Yelp
Well Worth the drive through Ballinger and then off the beaten path a bit to find this gem. Delicious! All 3 of our dinners tasted fresh and cooked perfectly to order even the zucchini was yummy buttery tasty side dish. Mesquite grilled steak cooked perfectly to medium Chicken fried steak like mama used to make And a hamburger steak that tasted fresh flavorful and I had to eat every bite. There were no doggie bags needed Customer service was just as good as the food We will be marking this on our map for return visits

Yelp
I've eaten here many times. So, I'm compounding all my visits into one. Customer Service - Whether busy or slow, buffet or menu order, the waitstaff has always been consistently slow. We tend to have to holler for service. 1 person, in particular, is the worst at being hunted down every time. - 2 stars Food - the steaks have too much liquid smoke. After a couple of times, I've quit ordering them. The BBQ buffet is always good. The Mexican buffet is bland. Everything needed salt as well as spice. Nothing had flavor. The Chess pie is awesome cold. - 3 stars Price - Average- 3 stars

Yelp
Gosh darn this place sure did hit the spot. I had a hankering for some prime time beef and sure did beefmaster deliver. Belly was full and had money left to take the honey out on the town.

Yelp
Been passing through Ballinger for decades and just discovered this place, which has been here more than 30 years. There's a buffet, reglar menu and bar. Service was good and friendly and foid was good old West Texas country. Pretty good choice in this small town pit stop.

Don P.

Yelp
This was awesome place we found, to enjoy dinner, while heading home. It was Sunday and they where starting get busy. We got table in the back. We had cheese sticks for appetizer. Now we gone to fancy restaurants in past that bring us frozen, microwave cheese sticks. This place made their cheese sticks in house, and they are very good. For our main course, wife and I had steak special, daughter had the bacon cheeseburger, and my baby had great bottle of Similac. Steaks where perfect and burger was awesome. Salad bar was good.

Yelp
Wow! Trusting the Yelp reviews, we left our route through Ballinger to find the Beefmaster and were really surprised. Don't be fooled by the caliche parking lot or the sun-baked and worn exterior: as soon as you open your truck door, you'll smell the promise of the great food inside. We ordered a Moscow Mule and a yummy rum drink on ice (can't remember what it was called) and both were excellent. The whole menu looked delicious, but we settled on the 24 ounce KC for one with an extra set up. I was concerned that this would be way too much, but my husband assured me that KC steaks usually have the bone in and that weight reflected that. We both settled on the baked sweet potato with butter (cinnamon also for me), then headed for the salad bar. With fresh greens as a base, we chose from carrot slices, cherry tomatoes, pickled okra, shredded cheese, small chunks of broccoli, and many other fresh salad fixings as well as 3-4 cold salads and jellos and puddings. The steak was NOT bone-in but rather cut in small irregular medallions and chunks and came with grilled zucchini sliced and quartered and served family style. The steak was tender, the zucchini was tender with a bit of crunch left, and the baked sweet potatoes were so delicious that I scraped every bit I could from the skin. Oh, and we had cornbread muffins (our choice of the bread offerings) which were lightly sweet. I had a glass of Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon and my husband had another mule but with Jameson Irish whiskey instead of vodka. Again, yum. (They have a full bar with the usual beers on tap plus Shiner Bock--usually a good sign! They also had several in-the-bottle beer choices such as Stella, Blue Moon, and Negro Modelo). The service was great. At least 4 different ladies brought us food or drinks or took our order or just checked on us with specific questions, such as when my husband changed the liquor on his 2nd drink, a nice lady came to ask how he liked it, explaining that "they" had changed the ginger beer because they didn't like the first one. They were just so relaxed, cheerful and attentive, clearly taking pleasure from taking great care of us all. Every conversation I over heard with the staff was that way. And unlike some chain restaurants in larger cities where you see almost as the Beefmaster there were only about 6 visible staff and though they were busy, they did not give off a stressed, rushed vibe--quite an unexpectedly nice topper to a great meal. Kudos, Beefmaster!

Yelp
Super disappointed. The dine in service wasn't good so we ordered to go. I Ordered Buffalo chicken with blue cheese and ended up with bourbon barbecue. The fried pickles literally drip grease into your mouth when you bite into them. Horrible experience overall.

Yelp
Fantastic Fantastic Ribeye!!! Oh did I mention it was fantastic. Gives Central Texas made food a worthy thumbs up!!
google avatar

Yelp
When you pull in the parking lot and look at the building, you will think about leaving. Get out of your car and get inside as fast as you can. Very rustic and clean inside. A fantastic lunch buffet with sirloin steak and fried chicken. About 8 to 10 sides that were oh so good. Buffet, salad, soup, drink, and dessert for $10. Different meats on the buffet each day. We drove over an hour to get there and I will do it again!
google avatar

Yelp
I was on a road trip and stopped in for some Texas BBQ. They had a super inexpensive buffet and the ribs were good so if your in the area, i would say stop by
google avatar

Hillary F.

Yelp
Driving through town and stopped here bc it had good ratings. I regret that decision and have a belly ache. We got the ribeye thinking they're a steak house and probably do it well...no. The salad bar was okay. The drinks were weak. The coffee was awful - and I drink gas station coffee without a problem. By the end of it we paid city prices for a less than satisfactory meal but our server was nice and attentive.
google avatar

Nicholas H.

Yelp
Now I travel all over Texas for work. One of my favorite things to eat is chicken fried steak. And let me tell you this by FAR, is one of the best Chicken Fried Steaks that I have had in a long time! I definitely suggest trying this place out.
google avatar

Brenda C.

Yelp
Tonight I had the special, which was baked fish with a mild jalapeño sauce, baked sweet potato, zucchini, and salad. It was good. I have no complaints, but no real accolades either. This was a lot of food for $8.95. So the price was right. The service was good. I think I may have had better luck if I had stuck to a steak or burger. After all, this place IS called Beefmaster not Fish Suzerain!! What was I thinking!?!? Next time, beef... and then I will update this review...
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Was honestly disappointed by this place as it was labeled the new Lowake's. Service was not good with basic amenities having to be continually asked for like napkins and silverware. Salad bar was empty on a Friday night so long line of people waiting. Ordered the combo plate of appetizers and the batter was tasteless. Chicken fried steak, which should be a staple, was bland and took way to much salt and pepper to make it good. Loaded backed potato was hot on the outside with the foil but cold on the inside. Overall not a good experience and will not go back.

Yelp
I was going to end the day in San Angelo, but decided to press on to Ballinger with the promise of enough daylight, two hotel choices, and this one eatery. If it's in Texas, and it's named Beefmaster, it has to be good, right? Right. I can now proclaim them the masters of beef. I got the 24 oz. KC steak, and while waiting to see what it was, loaded up from the salad bar and soups. Salad is nothing special, but the soup was. Apparently beef queso soup is a rare treat, and I'm glad I got to enjoy at least one bowl of it. I was ready to have a second bowl for dessert, that's how good it was. Spicy, cheesy, beefy. You can add cheddar from the salad bar to overload on the cheesiness - personal recommendation here. Steak took a little while to come out, but it was worth it. French fries are hand-cut in house, and have a smoky fresh potato flavor without being over-fried or salty. Strongly recommend. Steak options are flat-grilled or mesquite fire-grilled. I think mesquite is the obvious choice, but just in case - yes, get mesquite every time, and twice on Saturdays. I ordered medium rare, thinking it would come out rare (most places tend to underestimate), and damned if it didn't come out exactly medium rare. Hey, I asked for it. The steak swims in its own juice and is sliced into several large chunks - easier for sharing, depending on which size you get, and is oddly mixed with cooked zucchini chunks. I guess that's how they define KC steak. I'd have asked for no zucchini (that's why there's a salad bar, after all), but now you can do as you please. Texas toast was unnecessary with all those delicious fries, but I used it to sop up the leftover steak juice. So far, everything was five stars. Prompt service, friendly refills. Encouraged, and with the beef queso soup sadly tapped out for the night, I went for dessert. All the desserts are homemade, so you can't go wrong. I selected the Jeff Davis (chess) pie, since chess pies don't make it across the Mason-Dixon Line. Definitely the right choice tonight, because the pie was brought in fresh just an hour earlier. The pie had a fresh, crispy crust on top like a crème brulée. Only my second chess pie, but this is now my gold standard for them. Yup, five stars all around, and very reasonably priced for the deliciousness you will receive. They do takeout orders as well, if you don't have 90 minutes for a meal. Worth the wait.

Yelp
We had the "all you can eat" lunch buffet. It was a Friday & they had a good selection of sea food. I had fried cat fish & shrimp, seasoned fried potato rounds which were really, really good. I also had garden fresh sauted yellow squash, a crisp tossed green salad, & a pasta salad. They brought to the table wonderful hot rolls, tartar sauce, red sauce for the shrimp, lemon wedges, & chocolate cake. Over all an excellent lunch with attentive waite staff at a reasonable price. We will definitely stop again.

Yelp
I have eaten 3 meals here, and I highly recommend this place. Just finished breakfast, had the country breakfast, with the homemade biscuits, and it was one of the best I have had in a very long time. Also, the coffee was fantastic!

Yelp
On our way back from Lubbock, we stopped in Ballinger at this little place. From the outside, it is not impressive, inside is even less impressive until you hear some of the stories behind where the wood used inside came from. We went on Saturday at 2:30p and only one table was taken, we looked at the menu and decided we would go with the kids/senior menu. It came with salad bar, soup (two offered), choice of baked or sweet potato, fries or sweet potato fries. I had a 1/4 pound Pattie with gravy on the side and a baked potato. Hubs had chicken fried steak and sweet potato, other party members ordered chicken strips. We all thought our meal was good, but I would have liked my potato to be much hotter. Perfect amounts of each especially for seniors. The best part of this little place was the wait staff and the salad bar. They pride themselves on keeping it fresh and each person makes their own specialty salads to go on the salad bar. Pickled beets, pickled cucumbers and the pea salad were just like I was eating my own Mom's. The dessert salads were also extremely delicious, lite and brought back many good childhood memories. For 4, our bill was $36, which included 3 teas and a whole lot of food. Nice little find in Ballinger.

Yelp
Great food at a great price. Buffet - roast beef, fried chicken, turkey and dressing, liver and onions, squash, cabbage, corn, the best chicken and rice soup. We went there for steak but the buffet looked so good! Will have to go for steak another time. Hear it is really good.

Walter L.

Yelp
Very disappointed, burnt smell inside, didn't appear very clean. Absolutely no social distancing. Obviously they dont personally know anyone who has died from complications of COVID. Will never come back.

Shannon K.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much from outside but great restaurant! Homemade French fries, great chicken fried steak, chicken strips, and burgers! Definitely worth the stop!
google avatar

Yelp
I have never seen a small town contain a restaurant this good! My wife said the brisket was the best! My cornmeal crusted catfish rivaled any I've ever had. And the vegetables on the buffet were great too! And a word on the made-from-scratch soup: fantastic! I just wish they were closer to Houston - this place would be on my 'regulars' list.
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
Glad we stopped but did was just average. I had the pork chop, which was cooked just fine but wad nothing to write home about. My friend had a steak that he read quite happily with, but his steak fries were cold. The all you can eat salad bar was well stocked. The staff read friendly, but a little slow. Since there's not much around I might stop back, but I doubt I'll even be in town again.
google avatar

Matthew R.

Yelp
We drove an hour from Abilene on Saturday afternoon to give it a try and we are so glad we did! The $10.95 buffet all you can eat of KC steak and fried chicken was excellent and cooked to perfection and we were encouraged to eat as much as we'd like. The salad bar had a nice assortment. The cornbread salad and Texas caviar was excellent! I don't remember our waitresses name, but she was super-friendly and very helpful. It was our first time eating there and we will be back many more times in the near future. Thank you so much for making us feel welcomed and at home!

Yelp
I have been to beefmasters a few times since I have started working out in Ballinger. For the overall experience its not bad. I usually come in at lunch and for the most part they are busy, the waitresses are running around taking care of people, and the patrons seem happy. The food is hit or miss usually, either the meat is overcooked and rubbery or its spot on and made very well. I guess this just depends on who is cooking that day I suppose. I got the beefmaster burger today with a side of onion rings, and at first glance the food looked amazing. The onion rings batter seems to lack any flavor, if anything it tastes like fried flour with an onion, but they are crunchy and have a good texture. The burger should really be put on a heartier bun considering how juicy they are. Besides a mushy bun I can't complain about the build of the burger, very well done indeed, especially since I like my meat cooked medium. The one real issue I have is the pecan pie; as good as it is, no individual slice of pie is worth $4 and some change. Overall it's a bit pricey if you add on extras, but the food isn't bad. I think I would eat here a few more times and maybe recommend it to others.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Loved my burger. I got the beefmaster burger which comes with bacon and pickled jalapeños, and is how all burgers should be made. The onion rings are great, but the fries were a disappointment. Also had a bite of my daughters chicken fingers and it was like there was no salt in the batter or on the chicken. It needed to be seasoned. But definitely come here for the burgers and onion rings!

Amber T.

Yelp
Stopped in driving through town. Onion rings were good and chicken fried steak was mediocre. My boyfriend got a ribeye that said it was "cut fresh daily". The steak did not seam passable as a good quality cut of meat and tasted as though it had been frozen.
google avatar

Kiva C.

Yelp
A quaint little place and open until 11pm every night! Small town feel, the owner is often there. I stopped in around 10pm with a few friends. The staff is friendly, the locals seem to stick around a bit after their meal to catch up, and the food is pretty tasty. We had the chicken fried steak and Ribeye. The steak was perfectly cooked and well marbled. Unlimited soup and salad bar is pretty good. A lot of options and a good mixed greens instead of typical romaine. Just a darn good hole in the wall.
google avatar

Keith R.

Yelp
Today we ate from the buffet. I was surprised when it appeared that they had Filet mignon on the buffet, turned out it was ground beef wrapped in bacon. No gravy for the mashed potatoes, the rest of the buffet was fine. Not your big fancy steakhouse, but a homey down home restaurant with reasonable prices.

Yelp
Stopped on our way from Lubbock to San Antonio. The Sunday special was unbelievable. $8.99 for an 8 oz sirloin, soup, salad, and your choice of potato. Not only was the food delicious and well worth the money, the waitress Jessica made our experience amazing. She was kind, attentive and went over and beyond. She helped an elderly man move to a different table when he was cold and got a little girl pudding from the salad bar. Highly recommend this place for a great meal and even better service.
