11 Hot New Dining Destinations in Downtown Santa Rosa | Eater SF

"While saddled with an uninviting name, this Courthouse Square-side remodel of the former Rendezvous spot has a comfortable bar stocked with eager young mix-masters and serves an extremely respectable burger accompanied by duck-fat fries. Plus: outside seating." - Gretchen Giles

I only come here during happy hour. I love that it starts earlier than most. French fries and the sauces the fries are served with (especially the curry one) are delicious. My standard drink is an old-fashioned which is a happy hour menu item (yay!). The kale salad (not a happy hour item) is delicious and I order it frequently. Service is always attentive and courteous and I really enjoy the outdoor seating area which is lovely place to relax when the weather is nice. My only complaint…the product they use to clean tables has a strong window cleaner smell which was very bothersome, and I observed an employee spray the table directly rather than spray the towel which causes the product spray to potentially blow around if there’s a breeze, which it did.

Great cocktails and location. We had fun with the photo op at the front entrance. Great service. Only ordered some French fries but they were tasty

Christopher Ortiz

Google
My go-to spot that I’ll always be a regular at! Bartender Chris delivers exceptional service, great energy, and hands down makes the best Old Fashioned I’ve ever had. I host my annual client holiday party here, and the entire team consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything runs smoothly and my guests are taken care of. And for the record—nothing on the menu beats their hot wings!

First time in this place. Lots of outdoor dining. Tried the salmon with risotto, very tasty. Salmon was cooked very well. Risotto had a bite to it, would have preferred more creamy. Also for $20, the portion size was small. Kids menu of chicken strips was also good. It was deep fried breaded chicken. Tacos and burger both were decent enough. Friendly servers.

2ND UPDATE: We gave Beer Baron one last chance during Trivia Night, and though we spent $150 on food and whiskey, we left after the second round of questions because the bartenders are **awful** here. Same guys who still don’t know shit about whiskey, same guys who leave your glass empty for 10-15 minutes… or worse, take the empty without asking if you want another. The bar top was filthy. They’re not friendly or welcoming at all. I don’t make this accusation lightly, but my spouse and I are both convinced that they watered down the bottle of RedBreast 12. The color was too light and it tasted watery. I have a bottle at home, and double-checked as soon as we got back, and we are pretty sure that is what’s happening. Bottom line: we’re not coming back, which is a real shame. UPDATE: In the service industry, it’s painfully obvious when it’s “just a job” for the people serving. The lack of passion is clearly evident. It’s so weird to have bartenders who don’t like whiskey tending to a whiskey bar. Off-putting experience on a Friday night recently: None of the three bartenders were the least bit passionate nor interested in whiskey. One admitted to being a tequila and vodka guy, and *not liking whiskey.* … what? Watched the three of them wash every surface diligently while my glass sat empty. Weird. ———————————————- A beautiful (if a touch small inside) whiskey and beer tavern with excellent food and a couple hundred whiskeys to choose from? What’s not to love? The bar has around 15-20 seats at most, and there are about 10 tables inside. They do have a nice covered patio on the square so there is outdoor seating as well. The smoked olive oil guacamole was to die for, and the fish tacos were very good. We’re going back tomorrow for whiskey Wednesday!

Google
My friends and I genuinely had multiple bad experience here. The food used to be good, but recently it’s been going downhill. The chicken tacos were dry, and the ceviche came in a tiny dish, compared to the amount of chips you get with it. The drinks on the other hand are phenomenal. Always on point! Service has been terrible recently, too

Google
Had a lovely dinner here on our trip last summer. Great that they have a kids menu! We ordered the fish tacos, seared wild salmon and kids mac and cheese. Great service, atmosphere and delicious food!

Google
I really enjoyed my visit to this restaurant. It has a great atmosphere for brunch/lunch, with the modern decor and heated patio seating. I recommend the chicken sandwich, the steak and the alcohol free Utah Mule.

Yelp
Clean, relaxing atmosphere, good food, good service . Indoor or outdoor dining. Great selection of beer

Yelp
One word......Wyatt! As in Wyatt'n he single? Maybe he is, I love this place what's a gem..... I made it into this beautiful bar TODAY! And here I am already writing my second review of the day. God I love yelp! It's my new addiction.(my hubby is hating this). Anyways I had an amazing old fashion and it was exactly what I wanted. I didn't try the food but I heard it was awesome from a neighboring table. Anyways despite what my partner says...Wyatt...no sir wy'not...jk this place is fun

Yelp
We ordered the appetizers. The calamari was OK. Not the best that I tasted but possible. The guacamole was very good and the sweet chili wings were very tasty. The french fries were average. The service was OK but very slow. I had to ask twice for water. My friend had to send his drink back because they use the wrong type of whiskey, but they did fix it so that was good. We sat outside and it was comfortable.

Yelp
Downtown Santa Rosa has great restaurants to walk to on cool, breezy nights in the summer and fall. Beer Baron is located right next to the downtown court square, with a patio overlooking Fourth Street. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, checking on us frequently and always making sure we had what we needed. The Kale quinoa salad with grilled chicken breast was delicious and refreshing. With a citrus vinaigrette and fresh herbs and cranberries on top, the salad was filled with flavor and was filling as a meal. The chicken was cooked well, with great flavor and moisture that went well with the citrus and herb flavors. The western burger was a large meal, so come hungry. The burger came with caramelized onions and onion rings on it with a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce. The burger was cooked medium rare and was juicy and succulent with cheddar cheese perfectly melted on top.

Yelp
Beer Baron has great drinks and its probably the most reliable place to come any day of the week in downtown Santa Rosa. We have stumble on their trivia night and it had great crowd. The food is good, expect typical bar food. There is a outdoor/indoor area which is nice and you can bring your fur friend and kids. Service was great in my last visit, the bartender made delicious drinks and was very attentive. This place is a great stop while downtown. I give it 3.5 stars

Yelp
Can't say this is a go to favorite but it's solid, especially for happy hour. If you're in the mood for a snack and drink, the fat fries are tasty and you can't go wrong with a margarita. I've only ever experienced kind service and there's a good amount of seating throughout the restaurant. I personally love to sit outside on the covered patio. Great place to soak up some sun and people watch with a drink in hand.

Yelp
This is a local hitter. I'd consider myself a regular here and have really grown to enjoy the staff, happy hour, beer, whiskeys, and Thursday night trivia. I don't think you can really go wrong here. If your looking to drop in for a nice time in downtown I would highly suggest.

Yelp
Average food average drinks and below average service. I had a burger and it was definitely ok!
google avatar

Yelp
Great fries and service! Wall of options at the bar is jaw dropping tall! Loved the beverages and recommendations! Highly recommend for a date!

Yelp
Live music by Nick Foxer was amazing! Food was good. Service was attentive, and she was very friendly.

Yelp
An awesome restaurant to get together with friends. After a day in the Russian River, we decided to have a good dinner at the Old Courthourse Square area. My drink was very refreshing. Good for a hot day. My chicken & waffles is delicious! Satisfied. This area is definitely a hangout spot & Beer Baron caught our attention with good vibes.
google avatar

Edna C.

Yelp
This drink was really good and strong here. I also go wings that were perfection. Will be going there again. Also they now have trivia night on Thursdays nights there!
google avatar

Oldskool G.

Yelp
This place was really good! The tacos as well as the chicken sandwich with fries. Both were exceptional. Great vibe here

Yelp
Right in the heart of Santa Rosa! Lots of Whiskey and Beer to be had. The outdoor patio is nice, great for people watching. The woman waiting on us was nice. Dog friendly!

Yelp
They have a good selection/variety of beverages, a plethora if you will. So you can't go wrong on that end. But what about food, you ask? Solid gastropub, creative American style fare. A bit pricey, but definitely worth the $. We got the grass fed burger and the chicken sandwich. The size of each--plentiful. The taste--how I'd expect... the chicken sandwich shone brighter w the crunchy batter and that spicy sauce they concocted for it. You get to pick fries, fruit, or salad? (Can't remember re the latter) as a side. The fries were tasty and plentiful as well, and the fruit was higher end (eg strawberries), not like cantaloupe/honeydew. Sorry, that's what I think of melons vs berries. And they have TV for them sports and a big patio for outdoor eating and people watching.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
The service was slow, the chicken and waffles were not flavorful at all and came out about 15 minutes after everyone else at the table received their food, the ambiance was ok but it was way too loud in the restaurant and we couldn't hear each other talk at the table and the waitress completely messed up our bills. I'd go somewhere else next time and likely wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you're desperate. In short service and food were subpar and the prices were way too high.
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
The food, cocktails were great and the convenience of the place was perfect for the outdoor music we were going to. The Black Sheep Brass Band was playing in the park. I only gave a 4 star review because the service left a star to be desired.

Yelp
Headed here about 11am on a Saturday, mostly because it was one of the only restaurants open at that time. They had a great menu for lunch as well as brunch. I ended up ordering the onion rings and a veggie burger. The onion rings were yummy, the veggie burger just so so. My dining companions ordered chicken tacos and a two egg breakfast. The food was plentiful and they both enjoyed it. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive and helpful. The ambiance was typical sports bar, but it was early in the day so not too loud. The bar was impressive with literally a wall of liquors to choose from.

Seraphim R.

Yelp
Where to start? Overpriced Staff acts like serving you is doing you a favor Unless you are a friend: coworker Then well. Conversation flows while you thevcuswait Enjoyed watching the server ( who is mercilessly flirting with the "hi I'm Otis" bartender) shove her nose into the half-and-half carton to be sure it wasn't off before pouring it into a cup of coffee for a customer Class all the time In every way Better service at the Wagon Wheel If you know You know
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
This place is one of my favorite places to grab a drink. It's in the middle of downtown, has a great covered outdoor space with heaters for any weather, and good cocktails. They have wine and beer too, but really their whiskey is where it's at. They have something called a whiskey bible and if you're a whiskey drinker, it's a good spot to check out a variety. Their food is tasty too. I know it sounds lame, but their fries are so good. I also like their chicken and waffles. Worth checking out.
google avatar

Jesenia D.

Yelp
We stopped here for a drink and a quick bite around noon on a Sunday. We were seated in the really nice outdoor patio where there was also a live musician who was great! The food and drink was all really good. Heads up, this is not the place to stop in if you're in a hurry. We were in a rush and we found the service a bit slow, but I think it would have been fine if we had gone there planning to stay a while and enjoy a meal.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Pleasant surprise here; perfectly fine bar food, drink and service in a popular, on-the-square downtown location that could probably get away with being average but does quite a bit better than that. The Happy Hour tacos were substantial, tasty and a bargain at $8, the chicken waffles got good reviews from the young'uns, the beer selection isn't bad (though given the golden age of beer we're in, more local craft brews would certainly be welcome!) and the service was both cheerful and efficient.
google avatar

Erik P.

Yelp
Food was decent. Service was horrible . Asked them to split the check for a party of 4 and the server said she was too busy for that.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
This has been a solid stop for food and drink. They make some really good cocktails and have a decent beer selection. We stopped in for happy hour which is a couple bucks off drinks and has a few choices of food which we really enjoyed. A couple of tacos were $6 and filled us up nicely. Tasty! I wish more places had happy hours for those just wanting a couple of drinks and small bites instead of a full meal. Give 'em a try.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Went her for a late dinner last night. I called ahead on the way to the restaurant to make sure they were still serving food. They start doing last calls for the kitchen at 9:30pm. We got a couple beers to try a kolsch and a blond, both were good and the selection was also good. We ordered carnitas tacos and the heat stroke club. The order came out really fast and the food was hot and good. I was pretty surprised that the quality was as good as it was hand breaded chicken for the club and slow cooked juicy carnitas. They have an extensive whisky/ey list with some really awesome stuff including Pappy Van Winkle 15 year. I thought the good and atmosphere were really good, at 10pm they close the kitchen and turn into just a bar. It was really busy and looked like a good time. Give them a try for food, or if you are looking to do some time socializing go have a drink.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience at beer baron, very large whiskey selection and very good cocktail selection as well. Sitting at the bar with a friend, the bartenders Austin and Travis were very accommodating, informational and provided great service. The heat stroke chicken sandwich was also great. We will definitely return
google avatar

Nate G.

Yelp
Seat yourself? Ok... We had just moved our trailer and a beer and a whiskey was in order. Beer selection was good, whiskey selection was incredible! Fried chicken sandwich was incredible. The spicy sauce catches ya by the boo-boo. I will definitely be coming back

Scott J.

Yelp
Friendly staff, good food. Super happy with the fried chicken and waffles! We will be returning
google avatar

Yelp
We were walking down the street trying to find a place for brunch. I heard the live music from their patio and knew this was the place. Nick Foxer was playing keyboard and singing. Fantastic entertainment, delicious food, and a fun vibe!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I had a really great experience at Beer Baron. I went with a few of my coworkers on a Saturday night, and it was pretty crowded. The staff still managed to bring our food and drinks out quickly and they kept the drinks coming. I'd recommend the outdoor seating, as inside can get a bit loud. The outdoor seating is heated though, so it's comfortable. As far as the food goes, the chicken and waffles were amazing. The best version I've ever had, and I've been to the south! The bacon butter was so good! My wife had the grilled salmon tacos with chipotle aioli, and she loved them. The drinks are unique, and they have plenty of beer on tap too. I'd definitely recommend Beer Baron for a night out with your friends, or even a date night.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was great, service was passable. This place is a welcome respite in downtown Santa Rosa.
google avatar

Emily E.

Yelp
My husband and I always go there for the chicken and waffles. We usually go on the weekend mornings when it's slower. If you don't want a crowded restaurant, just don't go there on Friday and Saturday nights. But hey, that's when the younger crowd wants to go out and drink. So I don't blame the restaurant for that. Highly recommended, especially if you're a fried chicken lover like me!
google avatar

Yelp
We made the mistake of going to Russian River on "Pliney the Younger release day" and of course there was a three hour wait to get in (nope) so we walked around looking for somewhere to go to before the next brewery would be open and found this gem down the street. Went in and had a couple beers - good selection but what's more impressive was the whiskey selection. Just stared at the wall of whiskey in complete awe. So many I wanted to try, many offshoots off my favorites I've never seen before. Reminds me a little of Elixir in San Francisco. I asked the waitress if there was any way to see a list and she kid of mumbled and declined but said we could ask questions. As it turns out to get a list of their whiskeys you have to join their whiskey club at 250 a pop, which I wasn't going to do not living anywhere near Santa Rosa (so that docked a star off my rating here). A person from out of town can't see your whiskey list? That's lame. But outside that caveat I like the place a lot and will be back some time.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Went on Sunday morning around 11:30 AM with a group of friends. We had a dog in our group so we sat outside. They turned the heaters on for us since it was a little chilly. They had a brunch menu and their full menu available. I got the HEAT STROKE CLUB and my wife got the KALE & QUINOA SALAD. Service and food were excellent.

Yelp
Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen Santa Rosa: Much More Than Its Name Implies What's in a name? When it comes to Santa Rosa's Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen, what's in the name is so much less than what you'll find at the actual place. Our server, Star, was friendly, engaging, and professional. And we were impressed with everything we ate, especially the Buffalo-style breaded, fried, absolutely non-greasy cauliflower, the Asian-influenced hoisin chicken wings, and the risotto with asparagus. I'm sure there are some worthy beers available at Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen. But frankly, between the range of wines available by the glass and the house cocktails, I may never find out. Even classics such as the Hendricks martini my wife ordered tasted elevated, better than the same drink we'd tried elsewhere. Including even at home. Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen sounds like it could be just another sports bar or, Heaven forfend, "gastropub." But the food, the drinks, and the service were all more than that generic-sounding name implied. Go, and see if you don't agree a more accurate name might be something like "More and Better Than You'd Expect from a Name Like 'Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen.'"

Chris M.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to stop every time I get into Santa Rosa! The drinks and food are outstanding and I love what they did with the rustic look inside. The service is always great too. The menu is huge and the staff knows it well!

Charles C.

Yelp
Food, atmosphere , service and drinks are great. Fun times for trivia night on thursdays

Jennie Y.

Yelp
Brunch on the weekend: breakfast tacos are yummy. Couple with a mimosa and perfection
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Bottomless mimosas on the weekends are amazing and the food is decent too. Larger parties were a challenge to get all the food out and correct but the mimosas were well worth it.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Ordered 2 Pappy's for a celebration......the pours were scanty. Plus a $10 service charge on top of tax and tip. Poor experience experience.
google avatar

Yashira C.

Yelp
Good ambiance and service. Fries took longer than expected to arrive but they tasted very good. All sauces where delicious. I like that the music volume was low and it allowed you to have serene conversations...

Yelp
Beer Baron is a popular spot for downtown Santa Rosa, locals can enjoy a quick bite and wonderful drinks at the same time. I tried their Fried Chicken and Waffles and it was the BEST chix and waffles I've ever had. The chicken was juicy, seasoned appropriately, with an amazing light, but crispy batter coating the chicken. It's served with some amazing Honey-Bacon butter and pickled peppers. Topped with a shower of nice maple syrup. Every texture, the savory notes, sweet notes, and spicy notes meshed so well together. Best Chicken and Waffles in Santa Rosa, until proven otherwise!

Ed H.

Yelp
Great food! Was able to accommodate a large party without question. Service was quick and attentive!
google avatar

Dennis K.

Yelp
Great find in Santa Rosa!! We love intriguing drinks and their selection is phenomenal! Kyle was an awesome when it came to service and libation preparation. His Side Car was fantastic!! Great place to stop with fantastic service!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Great spot to watch a game! They played our out of state team at the bar and were good sports about our cheering.

Christine D.

Yelp
Food wasn't good. And wait staff was interesting at best. When you show up to a pub and your waitress is in a prom dress and no underwear, you have to question the management. And yes it was very noticeable. Super not professional and quite off putting. Food was nothing to write home about. Absolutely better places in town.
google avatar

Courtney E.

Yelp
I went here on a Thursday night with my friend before catching a movie. We got the Thursday night special - a beer and a shot for $12. Our server was super friendly and helped explain what the shot we were getting was. The shot was pretty terrible, but she was funny about it. The beers were good though. The ambience is fun and they have lots of craft cocktail options and whiskey choices. My friend got chicken wings and fries, which she said were both yummy!

Bree W.

Yelp
We had Alexis as our server on a Friday night and it wasn't even slammed. We ordered meals and apps and had to ask for silverware and was never offered refills for our empty waters. Worst of all was never asked how our food was. It felt down to business to get our order, let us eat, and give us our check. First and last time coming here. Too bad because we live super close too. Disappointed.
google avatar

Camille C.

Yelp
Dear god that was a tasty and juicy burger! Grass fed, too! The fries were perfection and the sauces great. Nice location. Mark & Star are super cool and lovely. Loved my experience and cannot wait to return.
google avatar

Yelp
After the Santa Rosa Beer Fest we stopped in here to have a bite to eat. They have many rotating taps and tout over 100 different kinds of whisky. So many bottles on the walls. The place is nicely decorated and has a really nice patio. The fries cooked in duck fat were fantastic. They really complimented my burger which was also very tasty. My son is in the wine barrel business and he admired how the ceiling was decorated in stave remnants. The best part? They have churro waffles that were so sinfully delicious. I had a major cheat day and was really enjoying this desert. We shared between 3 of us. It was so good we ordered another one. If you are in the historical downtown Santa Rosa area stop by this place. It has a really good vibe and we really enjoyed our visit
