A Chile Road Trip on the I-25 from Las Cruces to Denver | Eater

"A neighborhood dive serving thick, salty flour tortillas fried for ‘white’ chicken tacos (tasting like pita chips) and a side of fideo—a cumin-forward vermicelli that reads like a local spaghetti riff." - Gustavo Arellano

The service was awesome and the vibe was really nice and laid back. The food was fresh and came out quickly. I had the sausage sandwich and my Wife had the slopper and we both really enjoyed our meals. We’ll definitely be going back because there were lots of other menu items I really want to try. If you haven’t eaten here, give it a try and I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!

Google
My friend and I enjoyed the steel City burger and sweet potato fries. Cooked to perfection. Let me tell you about the open air dinning area well decorated and quietly tucked away Pueblos south side.

Google
The biscuits and gravy was quite tasty and I love their green chili. Great choice for brunch.

Google
Food is Excellent...Service is Exceptional..been here about 6 times and always consistent. Its kinda of become my family's place to go! Sloppers and sausage sandwiches are on point..my mom said The Patty melt was among the best she's ever had..well done!

Google
His place is clean, the staff is super nice, and the food is way yummy. There is a good variety of options without it being overwhelming. I had the Philly with their fresh cut fries. Let's just say it didn't last long and my gluttony was shocking. My son had the nachos and I finally know how to keep him quiet for a bit. My mother, who has a PhD in picky, had some smothered sausage thing that disappeared in no time. You get a lot for the money. We look forward to returning very soon.

Google
First time here and I loved it!! Great service and really great food!! Everyone was super friendly and attentive!! They all work together to make a great experience. No long waits for drinks or food! I must admit, the wings were amazing 😍 I'll definitely be returning!! 😉

Google
My husband and I went to this restaurant on a whim and were glad we did!! The food was amazing!! The service was great. We felt like we found a local gem and will definitely be returning. Kudos to the chefs for their grill skills!

Google

Yelp
This is what a neighborhood bar/ restaurant is all about. This location came recommended by a family member who lives in town. Because of this reason we had to stop by. This spot is right in a neighborhood and looks like it's been here forever. This place has history. They are all about community. Supporting the locals which you can see on the walls and reaching out all the way north. We happened to stopped on a Saturday morning when CU was starting to play, this place picked up and all the staff was wearing their CU gear - supporting all the way in Pueblo, Co. now let me tell you about the food- sorry no pics we were hungry. We started with chips and salsa. Homemade chips super delicious. It's a full bar great prices but since we are far from home- no drinks. I got bowl of menudo w/2 tortillas. Pretty standard. My son his is super picky got French toast. However the meal that my man happened to get was called the "Slopper" with2 extra eggs. It had potatoes, green chili,2 sausage patties, bacon, cheese and 2 eggs. He got tortillas on the side. Sounds like a lot but he shared with me. Food was real good. The icing on the cake was how nice and welcoming the whole staff was to not just us but everyone who walked in the door. We were even introduced to the owner. Once we were done eating my man said he could see being a regular at this place if we lived there. I felt so at home and just like a regular.

Yelp
We flew into the Pueblo airport, and tried to go to another restaurant, but they closed due a forecasted cold/snow snap. We liked the food here, wait staff were nice and prompt. This is an old timey bar that I would hesitate to go in, judging from the outside, but it was fine. Draft beer served in room temp schooners.

Yelp
Pueblo staple. Good bar food! Order to go wad ready when I arrived to pick. Nice lively place. Looking forward to trying again soon under the new management.

Yelp
Some kind of Cajun shrimp pasta. Lots of shrimp. I broke out in a little sweat, which is good to tell me it was a tad spicy. It was the special of the day, which I think is the way to go. Otherwise, they have standard Pueblo bar food: burgers, a couple of sandwiches and Mexican food. I should come here more often.

Yelp
This place is great in so many ways. I was blessed with a great experience. It could have been the beer but I'm thinking it was spot on. Our server was really nice and observant. I had the Philly and rings my friend had tostadas. We also ordered pork skins (chicharrones), nice and crunchy. I will most definitely be back. I loved the vibe of this place too. Everyone was drinking and enjoying themselves and it was only 11:30. I loved it!!

Yelp
Went in, there were only two occupied tables in the entire restaurant. The waitress asked me what she could do for me. I asked her if I could have a table for one and she said yes. I asked her if I could sit on the patio and she said yes. I proceeded to wait about 15 minutes before a man came out and said "Good thing my daughter told me you were here!" He asked for my drink order; I asked if I could have a menu. About one minute later the woman, I must now assume was the man's daughter, brought me a Pepsi and a menu, as requested. She said she forgot about me because she was caught up talking to another customer. I hope that customer tipped her well! I then proceeded to wait another fifteen minutes without service, in a restaurant which was 95% empty. I collected my belongings and left, with no staff saying a word to me. Seems like they *really* didn't want to take my order... I had never been in before, and won't be back.

Yelp
Good food and atmosphere, we like this place food is delicious and price is fair, we will be back !

David L.

Yelp
Aid you haven't been yet you're missing out. This place is a gem. Fantastic food and great service. You can't go wrong with anything off the menu but the slopper is my fav. Probably in the top three in town.

Thomas L.

Yelp
Meh! The young lady behind the bar and serving tables was attentive and helpful, but food was just okay. My friend had a slopper and enjoyed it; I asked whether they could cook a burger anything less than well done and was assured I could order it any way I wanted. Well, it was true that I could ORDER it any way I wanted, but apparently the kitchen only cooks burgers well done. My bottled beer was barely cold enough to drink. I don't punish wait staff for kitchen issues, so I still tipped just over 20%. I think it's gonna be a while before I return.

Yelp
Great food and place to chill with family and friends. I try to visit this place every time I am in town.
google avatar

Rudy G.

Yelp
Outstanding service, great Slopper and Fish and Chios; definitely worth trying with a nice cold beer; green chile medium hot but very tasty!
google avatar

Pranjali S.

Yelp
Decent place - family run so friendly. Was busy considering the low capacity we are adhering to. We ordered the cheese burger and chicken enchiladas with both green and red chilli. I got a Moscow mule and my friend got a beer on the tap. Everything was decent. Not amazing, I-cant-believe-how-tasty-this-is, decent enough to enjoy the food. I liked the green chili more than red chili. Would've liked more flavor to the chicken iny enchiladas. The burger was again, a decent burger. My friend got ghost pepper cheese which was awesome!! The moscow mule was good but not terribly strong. The beer was actually good.

Laurine R.

Yelp
Ordered 4 bacon cheeseburgers with fries for pickup. The meat was tasty & delicious-cooked to perfection! The bun (not hard but sturdy til the last bite!) with lettuce tomato & toppings--tasty! The fries are fresh cut not frozen. I strongly recommend ordering these instead of a fast food joint as well as supporting our local restaurant!

Yelp
We started with the chicharrones, absolutely perfect! Followed by one of the best burgers I've had in a long time.... Will definitely be back next time in Colorado.

Jason B.

Yelp
Authentic Pueblo. Great home style Pueblo Mexican food. Cold beer. Lively atmosphere. Nice patio. Great local joint
google avatar

Yelp
Nice local bar for Sundays and Boody Mary's! Enough tvs old restaurant style seating.

Karen L.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME! Amazing sloppers, done the exact staple Pueblo way. The atmosphere was great and they treated us like family. I highly recommend this establishment for anyone who wants to try a hometown restaurant.
google avatar

Pamela F.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere. Food was great. Try the french toast! Locals hang here and the place is always full. That's a great sign!

Donna W.

Yelp
Great local spot for a hearty meal and friendly service. Spaghetti with meat sauce (mushrooms, onions and peppers) and 1/2 Crispy Chicken Salad were perfect travelers' food for us.
google avatar

Maria H.

Yelp
Red beer delicious. Food is good I had a enchiladas with green chile. Margarita was tangy. Friendly service.

Alexandria D.

Yelp
Best all-around food in Pueblo- Mexican, American, and Italian!! Crab legs and steak on the weekends and everything is reasonably priced. Highly recommend the spicy red beer and Felix is the most handsome server and so sweet and polite. Very cool place and the patio is beautiful !!
google avatar

Christin S.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for comfort food! Sausage sandwiches and fries with chili steps are superior. Daily specials too! Thanks Polito's!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Great food and drinks! My favorites are the patty melt and beef tacos on white. Their green chili is yummy too! Service is always good. Staff are friendly. They have weekend specials i haven't had a chance to try yet but it's usually packed so they must be good!
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
Bar and grill food. I was told how good the food was so I went. I was not let down. My choice was the patty melt. There is a nice long list of cheeses for choices. I love hot spicy food so I went with Ghost Pepper cheese for my patty melt. I will be back for this. Plus the fries look like premium hand cut fries and were cooked to perfection for how I like hand cut fries. I was able to go on Friday for lunch. I bet it gets packed on weekends.

Yelp
Was great service and amazing food!! Was able to see dishes come out of the kitchen and all looked good and tasty.

Yelp
I don't know how never not learned about this place. It's a gem in the rough located near the Steel Mill. We were referred there by a friend who has a long time business in Pueblo and glad we listened. As most the places we went to that remember as having great food, eh not so good anymore. Hence, tadaaaaaa THE BEER BARREL or aka 'Polito's' Beer Barrel. We went basic. The other half had a burger and I had a slopper even though do not really eat beef anymore. Wow was the best burger the other half had during our stay. My slopper, eh I'm used to hotter green chile but regardless, tasty, fresh, well put together in all layers of ingredients. Definitely going back next visit!!! We are fans!!

Shelley S.

Yelp
The food here was inexcusably terrible. Fries were crazy undercooked and soggy. From the second I laid eyes on them I could tell they were waaay underdone. The fact that the cook let those fries leave the kitchen is a clear indication that there is zero pride in the food being prepared, or even an iota of care. The burger on the other hand, was way overdone and hard, the bun soggy. And $12 for a small (aweful) burger is ambitious. If it was great, ok, still a bit overpriced but passable, but when the food is an utter dumpster fire, $12 is rediculous!

Yelp
I love the fact that this restaurant serves fideo with their dishes! I never see that anywhere! Their red beers are yummy and their green Chile sloppers are worth trying!

Yelp
Came here the other day after work with some colleagues. All three of us are new to the city and decided to start a "Tour de Pueblo" to visit different establishments and get to know the area a bit better. Beer Barrel came up as an option with good reviews, food available, and affordability, so we made the trip. It certainly is a local's place, however it's not one that makes you feel like an outsider intruding upon scared ground. There are bar stools on the right, chairs/tables in the middle and booths on the left. A jukebox stands in one corner and I'm told there is live music on weekends. We grabbed seats at one of the booths and were approach pretty quickly by the server who was friendly, helpful and patient as we took a while to figure out what we wanted to order. I ended up getting a side of fries. One friend tried the chicken tacos and the other a corn dog. Since it was called the Beer Barrel, I kind of assumed (incorrectly) that there would be a fair selection of beers. Our choices were Bud, Bud Light, Coors, Coors Light, and Shock Top. Went with the last option. Fries were tasty and my friends also enjoyed their bar fare. Overall a fun place, cheap food (my tab was less than $5) and drinkable beverages. Would like perhaps at least one other non-Bud/Coors choice, but beggars can't be choosers.

Yelp
My husband loved this place. The bus stopped near and my husband ordered the chicken Philly and raved about it. I was too tired and didn't get off. He said it was very nice and neat on the inside and smelled awesome lol. I know he was just hungry. To him he said it was his diamond in the rough and the staff was great very prompt with service and nice,

Yelp
I love this place! The owners are on sight and friendly. The food is a huge step above regular bar fare and the prices are reasonable. They have specials every night, steaks, all you can eat spaghetti Sunday, etc...They even have a decent wine selection! I will keep going back.
google avatar

Zack H.

Yelp
A Bessemer favorite amongst my coworkers and I. It's a very very clean dive with some pretty good food. Staff can be hit or miss, but I've usually had a good experience. Friday and Saturday nights are a blast and super busy. However...when there are bands there, it's LOUD. I think this is partially due to the building's acoustics, but...for the love of all that is holy and comes in a Schooner, can you take the volume down from an 11?

Justin J.

Yelp
Awesome food and excellent service! First time here and definitely coming back!! And definitely gonna recommend for anyone that hasn't eaten here.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Excellent local neighborhood joint! Great service, good food (especially French fries), and smokin jukebox with lots of jazz. Looks recently remodeled, really nicely done and nicely maintained old bar. Great find!
google avatar

Rusty S.

Yelp
Nice lil place. Awesome staff and good atmosphere. Great food at reasonable prices. Huge selection of drinks and beers. Live music on the weekends. Well worth a stop if your looking for a lil watering hole nearby.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
The daily specials are great! Today's was a chicken piccata with fried spaghetti. A nice cream sauce with garlic. Great flavors and good value. I see a line on Fridays for the steaks.
google avatar

Dotti C.

Yelp
On the outside, This place looks like a bistro, but walk in, & it's an old school bar with booths. At any given time you can find steel workers, older genteel ladies, college kids, hookers- -it's quite a place. Everything I've had so far is home made. The hamburger patty, & real french fries!!! It's a great little bar that serves great burgers.
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Come for the slopper and the most amazing hot chips out of the fryer. Last time I was in town I went here right from the Airport. Very nice staff

Carl H.

Yelp
This place is outstanding. Best slopper and burgers in Pueblo. Inexpensive beer and wine prices. Daily specials are superb. Prices reasonable, great service. It's my choice for all daily meals, breakfast lunch and dinner.
google avatar

Arielle E.

Yelp
Clean and delicious!!! Full house, happy customers, can't get any better. You should def check out if you haven't yet!
google avatar

Ryan Z.

Yelp
This is the place to go! I have tried most everything on the menu. And a lot of stuff that's not listed on the menu also!! As I am almost done with my drink, the bar staff usually has another sitting in the wait for me. The remodel inside is fantastic! The food far exceeds almost any place you can find! This includes high end restaurants. The steak I had was one of the best I have had around! But I am in love with the Chicken Philly!
google avatar

Anthony G.

Yelp
Good food and very friendly service. Prices are very reasonable. Love the beef tacos! Live bands on weekends.

Steve M.

Yelp
Fantastic food, fantastic atmosphere. On work business and decided to give it a try....great decision. If you're ever in Pueblo give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. Only complaint is all the Donky paraphernalia.

G B.

Yelp
Feb 2015 service is not the best RUDE not sure where waitress is she does OK just had my food slopper with side order of fries well done on my request food was great made up for service

Deanna M.

Yelp
Great food at this happening local pub! The food came fast and hot. Fantastic service. Definitely worth dropping by!
google avatar

Raoul D.

Yelp
Good food, but music usually too loud to converse. Music also from jukebox, so ranges from decent to complete inappropriate trash. I used to go here often, but stopped because of the annoyingly loud volume. Good bar spot, bad restaurant.
google avatar

A.L. S.

Yelp
This place has been one of those secret hideouts for as long as I've been drinking. They recently did a remodel and did a great job. The food is always yummy and really reasonable. Two red schooners, two Malibu and cokes and a double Slopper = $22. The service was good too. Prompt, cute and accurate. I enjoy it every time I go.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Super great food. Waitresses wee busy but still polite. Veteran customers moved to the bar just so we can sit and not wait. Loved it.
google avatar

Justin F.

Yelp
Another random place in pueblo that has good food. Very loud during games, but its a bar...
