I was super excited last year when I heard James was opening a new tiki speakeasy in the back of Beer Belly, so I was pretty sad when I had to give it anything less than a perfect review. But I did, at the time, for a couple reasons - I kinda stopped dropping in as much, until James, who I should mention is absolutely one of my favorite bartenders in Long Beach, said he'd read my review, didn't think it was really accurate, and told me to give it another shot. So obviously I had to do that right away (would've then and there, except it wasn't open at the time.) Popped back in last night around 7, and I'm very happy to say that my previous review was totally a combination of bad timing and a misunderstanding.
Bad timing was the slow service - I was there right after they opened, so there was tons of buzz leading to too many people, then I was back a little later, when they'd apparently just gotten a mention in the local paper, leading to also too many people. That said, I feel like if they can't deliver on the feel of a good speakeasy after a certain number of people (which includes getting to chat with the bartender about spirits and cocktails, especially when the bartender is James, who knows a LOT about spirits and cocktails), then they should really limit the bar to that number of people - I stand by what I said about service being slow when they were overfull earlier, but a random Friday evening around 7, it wasn't dead, but it didn't take 20+ minutes to close out like the previous time (it took like 2. Yay!) I also got my drink in a fancy tiki cup that they didn't have last time, apparently also due to it having been too busy. So basically the advice there is, if you look in and it's way too busy, don't be part of the problem, you won't enjoy it anyway. ;)
The misunderstanding was that James wasn't interested in making up drinks on the spot because it was too busy. That was just totally a miscommunication (due to it being super loud and busy when I was there last time). You still probably *shouldn't* get a "dealers choice" if the bar is super busy (though James said he'd totally do it anyway), but they absolutely are set up for it, and James was 100% happy to make me a couple off-menu drinks, I just had to be clearer that that's what I meant. Which is good, because I also still stand by my earlier statement that, while all the drinks on their small menu are great, when you're charging 13-14 dollars for a drink, I have to compare them to my other favorite places nearby (including Beer Belly!) that, especially during happy hour (which Tiki Tiki doesn't have), offer drinks that are absolutely just as good (not *better*, but definitely just as good), and cheaper. If you're paying 13-14 bucks for a drink, it shouldn't just be "good", it should totally wow you. But when James makes a drink up on the spot, that "wow" factor is there in spades.
Had one drink based on a request for him to just make literally whatever he felt like making (which was what I was going for the previous time) - got probably the tiki-est drink I've ever had, given it was made with 4 different types of rum, plus gin, but tasted like nonalcoholic POG juice. Now *that's* a tiki drink. (And worth 13 bucks just on the basis of also being quite boozy, in addition to being delicious.) Then had a second drink with the request of "super coconutty" (because hey, it's a tiki bar), and got a drink even more delicious than the first, basically a coconut-heavy pina colada, juiced up with extra flavor from a macademia nut liqueur. Soooo good. I'd pay 13 bucks for that on a relatively regular basis. (To be fair, I will also occasionally still get the Frozen Bird, cause it's such a fun novelty. And if I ever actually manage to catch any of their other one-off frozen drinks, which I've seen a couple of advertised but have always disappeared before I got to try them, I'll definitely get those, too.)
If you're just here for over-the-top tiki decorations, I do agree, they don't have that. Someone recently described their decorations as the "minimalist" version of a tiki bar, and that is accurate - it certainly evokes the spirit of a tiki bar, but it's not over the top with it. Personally, I'm totally fine with that, I'm here for the tiki drinks, not the tiki kitsch. The drinks are great.
