Raise a Toast to Bartenders With Tequila Cocktails at These Portland Bars | Eater

"Small inner Southeast bar, Beer, states its raison d’etre plainly: This is a low-key hangout, specializing in bottles, drafts, and growlers. If you’re more into spirits than hops, you’ll do better with cocktails like the house margarita made with Teremana tequila and the usual sweet and tart suspects. The Coconut Telegraph takes the house margarita in a creamier, more tropical direction, with the addition of coconut cream." - Vox Creative

Google
We were visiting Portland and looking for a good spot to grab a beer in the evening, since the city is known for its craft beer. We chose this place because it was close to our hotel, and we’re really glad we did. One of the best things about it is that it’s open until 12 AM — most bars nearby closed around 10 PM, even on a Saturday night. The beer was good, with a nice variety on tap. The bartender was friendly and helped us pick something based on what we like. The vibe was relaxed and welcoming, and the whole experience felt easy and enjoyable. We had a great time and would absolutely recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.🥰

Google
Beer always has a top notch tap list and friendly staff. Their inside is cozy and inviting and the outside seating is actually plentiful given the somewhat limited space. Both inside and outside are dog friendly! They have a full bar and allow outside food. Great taproom overall.

Google
One of my favorites! My recommendation: order the beer. You won't be disappointed.

Leslie Iacono

Google
Great dive bar. You can bring in food or even order at the bar from outside restaurants?! Great margarita, huge shots. Pinball and one gambling machine. Dogs seem welcome inside

Bill B

Google
Nice place. Parking is a bit of trouble but it's worth it. Come with an attitude for exploration so you and your bids can try a few styles

Google
Seltzer lovers rejoice! Great selection of seltzers in cans and sometimes on tap. I like this place ALOT. Hamms on tap. Regularly have a great selection. Bartenders always kind. Love all the plants too!

Google
Super cool spot for beer! Friendly bartender! Had many options to choose from. Definitely understand why they call it Beer!

Google
Great beer selection, but most of them were basic, nothing awesome on the list

Yelp
Caution: Aggressive MAGA Bartender at Beer Some friends and I stopped by Beer for our first drinks of the night and sat at the bar. We were having a pretty casual conversation about current events in the U.S.--nothing heated, just a general discussion. A few minutes in, one of the bartenders came over and said he didn't like our conversation. It was an odd comment, and we weren't sure if he was joking, so we just brushed it off and kept talking. Later, when one of my friends needed a refill, I asked a different bartender for another drink. That's when the first bartender suddenly stormed over, visibly angry, and said my friend couldn't have another drink. He repeated that he didn't like our conversation and told us we all needed to "pound our drinks and leave." We tried to calmly ask what the issue was, but he got even more aggressive. At one point, he grabbed our female friend's hand and took her drink from her. Then he tried to do the same to me, but I stepped back and avoided it. I finished my drink quickly, and we all left without further incident. I don't remember the exact date, but it was a Friday night. The bartender was average height, had blond hair, and wore a tie-dyed shirt. He gave off a strange vibe--almost like an undercover cop. Definitely a not fun experience. I guess if you're a Proud Boy, you might have a better time here than we did.

Yelp
Best barkeeps in town & great selection of craft-biers as well as ciders. Prices not too shabby and always friendly staff, even when busy!

Yelp
Beers beers and more beers. Huge selection. Waited there for Grand Fir reservations. Very friendly, huge selection. So far, much nicer than the Fir crew. Cheers to all.

Yelp
Hello, Beer. I liked you. For a minute. Pinball is good!. Service was ok. been there few times. until... I made a terrible mistake. I decided to reach for some matchbooks slightly behind the counter...OH SHIT... all hell broke loose from the bartender and was YELLED OUT LOUD... DONT REACH BEHIND THE COUNTER! Loud enough for all the bar to hear. I coward, and left to the other side of bar and actually shed some tears...and wanted leave but played out my pinball coins an decided. that I would never go back because...THE BARTENDER yelled at me...then tired to back peddle and say he yells at all his friends. OOOPS!
google avatar

Milan W.

Yelp
Called to ask what ciders were on tap but before I could even get a word out I was hung up on by the gentleman who answered the phone. When I called back and asked him to please not hang up on me he replies "well tell me what you want." After which I ask my question but wasn't even told what flavor the cider was just the brand on tap...I was very excited about finding a new bar within walking distance from my home but needless to say I will not be giving this place my business if that's how I'm treated over a simple phone call.

Yelp
Love this spot. It has such a fun, neighborhood feel and lots of games to pass the time. It's exactly what it seems like. People come in with their dogs sometimes, too, as they keep treats behind the counter. Great place to read, drink, play, or catch up with friends.

Yelp
This is a cool place to hang out. Nice cozy atmosphere with a good relaxing vibe. I love the decor of classic items and pictures. They also have a pinball room which is super cool. I didn't get a chance to play so I need to come back for sure. The bartender made an excellent Old Fashioned, have to say one of the best tasting and fragrant one I have had. Had square cube, not clear but still nice I hate regular ice in my OF's. Yes I am an ice snob.

Yelp
Great for beer... Can have a meat cheese bread sandwich delivered Good food/beer combo

Yelp
Lots of beer. Beer on tap. Beer in bottles. Beer. Beer. Beer. I had a fruity beer that was on tap (forgot the name), and it was really good and refreshing. Although it's a small space, they have a lot of seating at the bar and in the back room. There was a group that came in that brought their own board game. We came here on a Friday night after stopping by the winery next door. It wasn't crowded and had a very chill atmosphere.

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews, so I always give myself 24 hours before I do so just to make sure. My wife and I went in Saturday night after the Spliff show for a quick drink. The place seemed nice. My wife received a phone call that she had to take so she went outside to answer it. On her way out her elbow knocked over a candle on the wall while avoiding another patron on a barstool. She stopped and said "Oh my gosh I am so sorry". The bartender said "I got it" and went to get a broom and dustpan. My wife thought all was good until another customer came and asked her outside if she was going to clean it up. Again, the bartender said "I got it" so she continued to stay outside. The bartender came around and said "IT WAS A CANDLE?!?! WTF maybe if she got off her cellphone!" Seriously? Accidents happen and I confronted him about it saying that it was unnecessary and that accidents happen. He finished by saying "It doesn't mean I have to be happy about it!" This created a really awkward moment. I texted my wife telling her not to come back in. Neither of us barely touched our beers. I paid for them since he had my card information and left rather embarrassed about it. Sorry about your candle, and sorry to the not very understanding bartender who was apparently having a bad night that we made worse.

Yelp
so glad this place wasn't impacted by the pandemic ! and somehow it seems better than ever and has magically reclaimed my favorite bar staff. even tho I've been a consistent patron since they first opened, I think I've avoided leaving a review as I almost don't want people to know about it. it really does meet the definition of a neighborhood gem. from the powdered soap in the bathrooms to the impressive collection of vintage beer memorabilia that line the walls.. it's somehow managed to maintain its low key vibe over the years, is never crowded, and I don't think I've ever had to wait more than 5 minutes for a drink. so for that reason, I guess I'm just gonna say: shhhh.... :)

Yelp
The bartender was a sweetheart & that was the highlight of our visit. I have lived in Portland for five years. This is the worst tap that I have seen for a Portland bar since I moved here. Local breweries but total lack of Styles or spread in beer styles in their selection. Feel free to contact me if you want to display some quality pnw beers.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
I love this place but the service left something to be desired. I've usually had really good experiences here. The waiter was energetically unpleasant and snappy. I asked for a sample and it seemed like a huge inconvenience. He was the kind of guy that would tattletale on you. Given that I don't go out much during Covid and this was one of my first experiences out in southeast in 6 months, I definitely wouldn't go back if I knew he was working. Seemed like he was friends with other people there and they liked him, but our experience wasn't one that I would bring people to again.

Yelp
Beer has a new expansion with a pinball room tucked away in the corner. Lots of good beer, lots of room and now games to keep you occupied. Pretty great!
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
The beer list is meager. That's what had us walk in and back out again a couple months ago, but this time, they were the only place open in proximity, so we decided to just deal with it. The place is small and cramped, which is usually cool, but all the wood and the particular lighting they chose makes it feel smaller. The bar is probably more gigantic than it needs to be. The back room has pinball, which is cool, but there's no flow-through and no windows, so it's like a submarine mess hall (which I've never been in, but can imagine). Not really into it.
google avatar

Amber F.

Yelp
Nice spot. Inside seating is a nice bar vibe. Old western feel to it. Lots of old beer signs and some greenery to keep it fresh and bright inside. Outside has small benches, two to four people. They share the tables with the restaurant next store, but today at least there's plenty of seating. Beer has about 10 beers on tap, with a good variety of styles and a majority of local brews. Their bottle list is pretty extensive, about two pages worth. A great spot for a brew or two on a sunny day. No food, but the vegan mall is down the street! Yay food fight! And if vegan isn't your thing, next door is meat cheese bread. And I'm not being vague, that's the name of the place.

Yelp
Great little "hole in the wall". Tap and bottle. Bring your own food. There's plenty of options in the neighborhood. Not easy to find. Good luck on parking, but well worth the effort.

Yelp
Saturday night (August 28, 2021) was one of my good friend's birthday so we were out celebrating. I was DD so I wasn't drinking that night. As we made our first stop at Revolution Hall we looked for another bar to hop to next. Seeing that beer was the next closest bar open we decided to give it a shot. As we walk into the bar the bartender mean mugs us and was very confrontational. He asked for our ids as a bar tender should, but instead of checking dates on ids he just holds them and stares into each one of my friends eyes trying to be intimidating. When he gives us our ids my friends ask what's on tap to which the bartender responds "the menus on the wall." So my friend squints to try to read the menu on the other side of the bar. He asks for the first drink on tap, but mispronounces it. To which the bartender immediately gets more confrontational and tells us that we all have googly eyes and says he's not going to serve us and that we need to leave. We are all POC (Asian, Mexican, Hawaiian, and black) and didn't understand if it was a racial comment or not, but we are definitely never going back to this place again. I hardly ever review places (good or bad), but this experience was so bad that I felt compelled to review this place.

Yelp
Excellent, grab a sammy next door and have some local brews. $6 flights Local hard to find brews. This is my spot, Monday night bingo, and other great events. Come by drink some brews, nerd out on beers.
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
There isn't much to this place besides BEER......obviously... But man do they have a lot of it. There is only about 8-10 beers on draft (wish they had more). But a 3 page list of bottled beers! We had a flight of 4 beers which were all very extremely different (my boyfriend chose them) and definitely broadened my beer palate (not sure if I liked them or not...ha) What made this place truly great though is the sandwich place in which it is adjoined to (owned together). The both share the outside seating which was perfect because we had our puppy and it was a beautiful day out.

Yelp
This place is awesome!! My partner and I had just arrived in Portland after a 14 hour drive from San Francisco, ordered takeaway from the Thai food place next door, and just so happened to park in front of Beer. I saw the "Stay or Go" on the window of Beer and wondered if they sell beer to-go (which isn't legal in California, but we learned momentarily is totally legal in Oregon), so I popped inside to see what was up. Sure enough, they sell bottles to go! I asked the waitress for her favorite local IPAs -- she set me up with four of her favorite 22s for $24. Sweet deal. My partner and I had one each with our Thai food last night for dinner and both were very good. We took pictures of the labels so we could buy them again! The other two will be had with dinner tonight, and I expect they will be just as delicious. Next time we're in town, we're definitely hitting this place up again. It looks like a really chill bar to hang out in!

Yelp
I enjoyed my cider and sando here, this afternoon. Staff (bartender) was nice and friendly. Not very talkative but that's because I was eating. He was polite. Started to get crowded after my late lunch. So get there early! Did I mention that I loved my cider?
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot next to meat cheese bread to grab a nice beer. Awesome selection of good beers!
google avatar

Don B.

Yelp
Meat Cheese Bread has a new friend, and it's named in a similarly straightforward way - BEER! I mean really, if you have meat, cheese and bread, the only thing you're really missing is beer, and Beer has plenty of that. This little shotgun space is all wood and old beer nostalgia mixed with an extensive bottle list, a short but sweet tap list, a few very interesting ciders, and some smiley service. Sad are my days now that I can't really drink beer any more. My insides simply don't agree with either the hops or the malt or something. But Beer can still be dear to my heart as they serve some tasty Basque ciders alongside some more normal, less-funky local options. Plus you can order the always-delicious sandwiches from MCB next door and eat them here... with a cold beer. Now this block has Enso for wine, MCB for food, and Beer for beer. All they need is for a distillery to move in and it's one-stop shopping. Bravo!

Yelp
DUDE. This place is AWESOME. Super chill, tucked away, and devoid of any of the hipster/trendy/loud crowds you run into at most bars in the SE these days, this place reminds me of the Portland that I fell in love with many years ago. There's no pretentiousness and no hipster snobbery here. Just a super friendly bartender (who (a) let us stay well past closing time (b) gave us samples of drinks without us having to ask for any and (c) warned us if the beer we liked was going to be $7 for a small glass) and a REALLY f*cking impressive beer selection. You can either drink at the bar or get it to go. Great concept. Truly a gem.
google avatar

Molly T.

Yelp
One of our favorite neighborhood hangouts. I love a good tap house and I find the selection at beer quite agreeable. Staff is friendly in the way where they seem to know most people walking through the door and are quick to make others feel welcome rather than giving off that exclusive vibe that you get at other small drinking joints. They also have impeccable music taste. I also have a huge soft spot for their decor and I love Meat Cheese Bread (owned by the same folks and delivers sandwiches to the bar!) so it's hard to talk myself out of spending time at Beer
google avatar

Morgan N.

Yelp
Great place to beat the heat in the summer or to just spend some time drinking. Good selection available and on tap.
google avatar

Nathaniel M.

Yelp
Beer? Yes please! I love this simple little bar next door to one of the best sandwich shops in the world (Meat Cheese Bread). Like the name implies, they serve only one thing and they serve it by draft, bottle or can. Since they share a wall with Meat Cheese Bread, you can order sandwiches and they will walk them over to you. The bar doesn't hold too many people (although there are a few more benches in the back), so I wouldn't recommend this place for groups. However, if you're in the mood for an exotic beer...or just any beer really...pull up a seat and choose from one of the biggest selections in the city.
google avatar

tatiana p.

Yelp
My group of 5 just walked out, yelp says the place closes at 11. Walked in at 10:25 and the waitress immediately yells out from behind the bar that she's already done last call. Interesting because it's 35 minutes before closing time. We were actually there to meet friends and they had full beers when we arrived. We politely asked if we could just grab one beer with our friends. She said no because "last call is at 10:30," which is odd because we clearly walked in before 10:30. Bummer, oh well. Bad service, I don't recommend it.
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
I've heard mixed reviews about the place. Decided to check it out last Saturday night and the waitress was quite rude and unprofessional. There's so many great places in Portland to choose from, so I definitely won't be going back.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
An unexpected extension from 'BreadMeatCheese" next door, Beer is what it says and does what it says - beer. a well curated and rotating selection of taps and cans and bottles make this a nice low-key chillax spot for local beer nerds who've been crowded out of Marthas up the street during concerts. Throw some pinball in the back and you've got a cozy neighborhood spot for you and a couple friends to get together and have some pints, or sit up at the bar for some conversation with the handful of other customers. It's a small space so you're either alone or with some new friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Just spent birthday last weekend in portland and this here joint hit the spot! A super friendly and beer savvy tap tender & cellar master in Tom took grand care of the mrs and i on a random, yet now historical monday afternoon. Additionally, my life was made complete with a delivered chunk of food bomb love delivered from next doors: meat, bread, cheese Straight 10en taps pouring a nice bouquet of fermented goods. Flavors varied from a very very nice fresh hop isa to one of my personal favorites bigfoot from sierra nevada. Some nice ciders rounding it all out. Easily picked up a few bottles from the cellar without blinking an eye. I have already preached its virtues to many friends and family, hope this simple man's review helps. Keep on enjoying the good stuff my friends. For life is short with nothing guaranteed but the tax man and the undertaker....aaaaaand beer. Salud to beer!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
First off... Love this place and the fact that you can get some of the best sandwiches in town delivered from next door. The older man working was THE most boring ever. He offered no information the beers on tap, only offered tastes. (Which does kind of make sense because most palates are different) I have never been in and only had one beer, this time I couldn't leave fast enough. I will be back, but will look through the window before going in.
google avatar

Matthew G.

Yelp
Good selection and great service, I love this place. Really low key environment, great if you're looking for a place to hang without noisy crowds.
google avatar

Natascha C.

Yelp
This place is GREAT! The decor, the beer, and the owner were super cool. The beer selection is amazing and the old, classic beer decor is something to be admired.
google avatar

Beerboy M.

Yelp
Good taphouse to stop and grab a beer. Small number of taps, but what they have is good. They also have a decent sized list of bottles with some solid choices. Simple, no nonsense, no hipsters, tables on the sidewalk for warm days, nice bartender. A little small, but a nice place to visit if you're in the area and in the mood for a beer.
google avatar

Shane J.

Yelp
We bought about 6 beers from the bar then we sat outside. Girlfriend bought a glass of wine next door and sat with us. Snippy bartender came out to us and said we're not allowed to drink wine on her public sidewalk. Winery next door is better anyways.
google avatar

Joseph K.

Yelp
In a city full of incredible beer how does one decide where to drink, how do you pick the pour that will satiate your thirst? You let John of "BEER!" pick for you; I had the pleasure of sitting at the bar with the owner recently and was given a sampling of the draft selections and a few bottles. John has put together a beer list of Portland favorites as well as some hard to find beers from around the world, his drafts are a rotating selection of seasonal selections and local gems that will please even the snootiest of beer drinkers. The music was great and the bar has a classic wood style décor with a collection of interesting art including an aluminum buffalo head as a center piece behind the bar. If you have not been to BEER Yet I highly recommend checking it out, you can also get a sandwich from Meat Cheese Bread at the bar which makes the food at this bar better than most. Attention southeast Portlanders there is a new place to drink on 14th and Stark!

Clark P.

Yelp
Great beer selection on draft and bottles if nothing tickles your fancy. Beer to go, cocktails and booze along with pinball. A good neighborhood place to hang or watch the Blazers games.

Molly H.

Yelp
It was fine until the server shamed us, five patrons, for giving a homeless person our food. We had already paid for it at that point and he didn't need to be a jerk about it. As a result, we won't be going back. He can disagree with what we do with our money but he can't tell us what to do.
google avatar

Emm D.

Yelp
Grab a bottle to go or stay and enjoy a drink on tap. Great, unique, LOCAL selection and staff who know their beers (and ciders). Sidewalk seating is the perfect place to take in the sunset with a bev and a dog. Tip: to make it a meal, order sandwiches next door!
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
Great place to just stop in and have a beer. Very relaxed and there is a good chance that you can strike up a conversation with a stranger. One hint: stop in before going to a show at Revolution Hall and you may run into that evening's performer. I went to the Todd Snider/Robert Earl Keen show (it was awesome) and there was Todd Snider. Cheers,
google avatar

Rouxster P.

Yelp
Good tap list, friendly service. Bottle selection as well. The back room is a bit of an afterthought but I like the bar.
google avatar

Gabriel P.

Yelp
Good solid place to sit down with friends and enjoy good micro brewed beer. Friendly bar tender and people hanging out here. Beer on tap is affordable but the bottles get spendy depending on what you want to try. Planning on returning with friends to drink after work.
google avatar

AK T.

Yelp
Stopped into this place around when it first opened. I'm always happy to see another craft beer bar so close to where I live. They were doing a Commons tasting which was awesome. The owner was very nice and did a great job making the place look cool. Very cozy and welcoming inside, and they had an impressive taplist. I'll definitely be heading back.
google avatar

Joshua B.

Yelp
This place was so chill and so fun. I came to Portland for the first time ever and stayed with my cousin on SE Stark street....found Beer and Meat Cheese Beer and pretty much contemplated moving to Portland at that point. I personally really enjoyed the sours and the stouts they had on tap. Also, my main man Dominick (spelling?) was one down ass dude...a venue is only a venue, but he made it a family type experience. Big ups to Beer, I'll see ya next time!!
google avatar

Adrienne A.

Yelp
Beer is a small shotgun style bar with, you guessed it, Beer. This place is a laid back and off the beaten-path bar. Its sister restaurant (Meat Cheese Bread) will bring you the food you order right into the bar. Its a nice quite place to waste an afternoon.
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Tiny place but excellent beer selection and great service!
google avatar

George T.

Yelp
Was visiting for a conference, and was definitely sold on the prospect of great sandwiches from next door, and good beer. The selection was diverse and well curated. They just seem to be enjoying themselves over there.
