Phoenix’s 10 Best Breweries - Eater Phoenix

"Having brewed its first batch in 2003, Beer Research Institute now finds itself one of Metro Phoenix’s old-timers. Located in Mesa, the brewery keeps its list largely classic, but doesn’t hesitate to powder the rim of a mango-chamoy sour with Tajin. A lot of the trends in craft beer are well represented here, from session IPAs to pastry stouts to pumpkin saison come fall. The kitchen turns out an array of burgers, a green chile mac and cheese, and a candied bacon with Sriracha known as “meat candy.”" - Chris Malloy

Cool place for sure! Definitely get the poutine and candied spicy bacon! Beers were all very good. Needs more Schwab though as shirts and such were lacking.

Google
The beer was decent but nothing to write home about. I did like the Belgian Ale, and the peach mango sour had good flavor. The real standouts were the food and the service. The chimichanga was outstanding, great flavor with some nice heat but not too much, and the elote was a great side. Brian also was amazing, he did great checking in, making recommendations on beers and even brought out the chimichanga on two separate plates without us having to ask since he knew we were sharing!

We loved this brewery! The beer was amazing, staff was friendly, arcade games were fun and all working. Loved the brass knuckle that the beer flight came in as well as other details like the lights, great atmosphere. They also offer individual can beers to go and growler fills. Will definitely be back! Highly recommend! Cheers!

Stopped in after picking up food in the same plaza. Good beer. There were only a couple people in the store but it is a Tuesday at 8:45pm. I think I'll be back tomorrow for lunch. From what I can tell, seems like the food will be good. Menu does look good.

Google
Great bar - I recommend the food. My favorite is the San Diego Chicken. The fries are delicious too. For beer I recommend the 480G IPA

Google
Delicious! We had Tanner and Ashely make care of us and they did a great job. Both gave great recommendations for beer and were very attentive. They made our stay very comfortable and guided us to the menu with no added pressure. We tried the Vamonos, MCH malt liquor and Yawn beer which were very light and refreshing for a hot day. I also tried the Imperial boom box which is thicker beer with a peach mango finish. The food tastes fresh! We enjoyed their Meat candy that has just enough heat. I love Poutine and this had great flavor, cheesy and the gravy was well seasoned. We also tried their special which was a grilled chicken sandwich with crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and a duck fat spread. If you like salt and vinegar then dont forget to add the pickled fries. Crispy, not greasy, and a true delight. Yum! Around 6:30 there was a buzz in the air and we enjoyed it all! Top marks everyone. Thank you for a great Friday date night 👍

Google
My Wife and I visit BRI frequently and I will say this has to be one of the best breweries and food spot on the east side. Their Kitchen creates some of the best dishes and you can taste the love in the food. The owners and staff clearly work together to create a great environment and you can feel it in the air inside. The beer is astonishingly great along with the food being absolutely blissful. I've been coming here for 10 years and hope they remain through the next 10 to provide my wife with nothing short of amazing experiences.

Google
Great mix of fun atmosphere/details as well as delicious food and beer choices. We tried 4 different beers on the brass knuckle beer flight and we were impressed by each pour! Green chili Mac and pulled pork sliders were excellent as well 👍🏼

Yelp
Best Margarita! Excellent service, great bartender, nice ambience. Love a little pinball!

Yelp
Came in with the fam today! Even with it being a busy lunch rush service was fast! Food was great! Tried the nachos today and they were so yummy! Our girl Brittany was a server again! Can't go wrong with this place. My youngest inhaled his burger! Said he would gladly come back. Both kids agree it's the best burger In the surrounding area!

Yelp
We went here for a drink and dinner. I thought the food might be mediocre since the focus is on the beer, but I was really wrong. Both our drinks and food ended up being really good. There are two rooms, one with a bar and booths and two long wooden tables with stools. We sat at the corner table booth, which was kind of private. There are a few places where the booths are worn, but it doesn't really detract. There's a big board with the beers that they have, and there was also a pairing of different kinds of cheeses and beers to go with them. There's a second room where you can see the big beer thingies (lol very technical) behind glass, and classic video games lining the wall. Pretty impressed with some of the games they had, like the original donkey Kong - - The one I played back when I was a teenager! There's also a shelf with board games, another great touch. Our server was a delight. She was cute as a bug's ear and super friendly. She helped me decide on a cocktail, and she steered me right. We ordered two tiki cocktails and a beer, all great. For dinner we had the green chili french dip, the nachos, the San Diego chicken sandwich, and an order of hot wings. The fries are real potatoes--seasoned and kind of soft and absolutely delish. We all really loved our food, and the price is right too! I can see a stopping by here often. Yummy food and drinks, good prices, good service--lots of reasons to return!

Yelp
I met a girlfriend here for the beer and sliders pairing. It was busy when I arrived. I started with Writers Block and then ordered the sliders with the pairings and I liked the chicken tinga elote paired with the vamanos mexican lager and the french onion slider paired with mild o.c.d. english dark mild were my favorites. Then we were getting ready to leave, I over heard someone mention the happy hour which made me look at my tab. I realized that I was charged regular price. I mentioned this to the beertender and she fixed it, but I had to mention it. Unless I'm invited, I will avoid.

Yelp
Great beer selection. I enjoyed both IPAs I tried. Do not see as many red IPAs, so that was nice to try and would be ordered again. My cheesesteak was quite tasty and a decent size. The tater tots were very good, although cooked a little too much, with the dry rub they put on them. The meat candy on the nachos should not be called meat candy because of how spicy it was. They cook the bacon in siracha and boy can you tell. Should have went carne asasda and I am sure I would have been happier. I would come back. Nice service.

Yelp
Was out in mesa so looked up breweries nearby and this was one of several but also one I hadn't heard about but was close and looked decent online. So glad I went with it. From the outside it looked as if no one was inside but as soon as I opened the door, I was greeted by staff and saw there was a decent amount of people I side at the tables and some spots open at the bar which I took. There was also some more seating where the pinball games were. I was immediately given water and a menu and taken care of by the staff. First beer was the 480G which was really good, plenty of flavor and bite. Ordered the super puncher burger which came out pretty quickly and was delicious. Great flavor in the burger and the toppings all worked well together and tasted fresh and flavorful. The fries were great also with a good salt and pepper seasoning of some sort but they were cooked well and a decent amount of them. I sampled the urban art and the street cred. Street cred had a decent flavor but I went with the urban art because it had a fresh crisp flavor and hit the spot. I got great service, great food, and delicious beer. Very worth a stop

Yelp
Ordered the Cobb salad to go. It costs $14. It came in a small box (6" x 5"), that was my first disappointment. I was charged $1 for an extra egg; 2nd Disappointment. Chicken was dry, and I only got a half-breast (just as well); 3rd disappointment. The honey Mustard dressing tasted like horseradish. ICK. no honey, no mustard flavors; 4th and final disappointment. One upside: the bacon was crispy. I think you can do better.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite breweries in Mesa. They have a good variety of beers and their food is delicious. I've been really enjoying their Loli Belgian Blonde recently. This pour along with a few others are only $4 on Sundays all day happy hour. I love that they offer an all day weekend happy hour. Not only are their beers good but their food is delicious, I usually go with their chicharrones for appetizers and a burger or their green chile Mac and cheese with meat candy for my entree. Everything I've tried here has been good and very fairly priced in my opinion. It's a super relaxed ambiance and they have a small arcade attached to it. There is plenty of parking. Service is friendly and prompt. Definitely give it a go!

Yelp
Beer Research is THE go to for beer afficionados looking for something special! It's been some time since we last ate there but everything we had was yummy! Everyone cheers when the group agrees to circle the wagons here. It's a cozy location with a bar counter, small outside patio and some indoor seating so there's something for everyone! We definitely recommend giving them a visit so you too can enjoy yourselves at this wonderful little hideaway!

Yelp
The Beer Research Institute was wonderful. The beer was yummy, I had both the West Coast IPA and Hazy IPA. They were delicious. For food, I had the Cali burger and tater tots. They were both yummy and had generous portions. They make their own hot sauce, and it was so good, I bought some to take home! The service was friendly and attentive. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
This place is special to my wife and I. This is where we met for our first day and spent hours getting to know each out. Thank you BRI for continuing to provide a laid back environment and awesome beer.

Yelp
Great food, amazing beers, reasonable prices and fun atmosphere. Service was quick, friendly and accurate, you can tell everyone takes pride in the brewery.

Yelp
I was here 7 years ago. Had the absolute best experience from amazing beer, top notch food, and super friendly staff. I've recommended this place left and right to others... and recently being back in town this was the first place I wanted to visit. Unfortunately, very different experience this time around... Had the Lolli, tasted watered down. Had the tater tots which were nothing exciting. Had the cheeseburger sliders, they were alright. Had the southwest chicken salad which was really good! That was the best thing we had. The place was pretty dead although I did visit on a Sunday so I guess to be expected. The high energy, bright vibe I recalled from 7 yrs ago was non-existent though. Our waiter was laid back and chill, but he did something very sketchy that has me feeling not so good about this place. Told him I'm from Chicago, and my story of visiting 7 yrs ago and really talked about the place. He came by and asked if we wanted shots of Malort since it's a Chicago thing and a way to really kick off my trip. After some uncertainty I said sure why not. Once the bill came around the shots were on there. I asked him about this and he said they weren't free. I said you offered them. He told me he couldn't do anything about it. Really?! I paid and we went on our way. Just left a bad taste in my mouth, in more ways than one. Overall, just disappointed the BRI has faded over the years.

Yelp
Great beers. Always my go too when I come to Mesa to visit. They're always exposing me to something new that I'm going to like.

Yelp
Met some friends here for some drinks and a bit to eat. Our server (Chris) was very attentive and friendly. We ordered some meat candy (sriracha bacon) and some pickle tots for the table. The meat candy was awesome...nice maple smoke flavor and slathered in a sriracha sauce. The pickle tots were ok, while I was hoping for bits of pickle in the tots, it did have a pickle flavor and dill sprinkled around. I ordered the Cobb chicken salad and that was good. I tried some of my friend's Mac & cheese with hatch chili and that was a good flavor too. It's a medIum size business with outdoor seating. Definitely a nice place to kick back and grabs some brews and food.

Yelp
Came here for lunch after trying their "Morning Sex" stout at a local brewpub. After trying most of the menu, turns out that was their best beer! Beer: "Morning Sex" was definitely their best beer. One IPA didn't taste anything like what I was used to, and for the most part, I wouldn't be returning to have anything else other than their stout. That is good though! Strong coffee flavor and very tasty. Appetizer: Beer pretzels were buttery and delicious! Main course: I got both the chicken sandwich and the Cali double burger to try. The chicken sandwich was amazingly crispy! Awesome job on that. The burger was fine but nothing special. Both could use more sauce, I would ask for more next time. Service: A little slow considering there weren't too many people in the restaurant, but not bad. Overall, a decent place to grab some American food and beer, but not anything outstanding other than their stout.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Great bartender! Eccentric beer selection! It has been on my list to visit and finally made it to the East Valley... well worth the drive!
google avatar

Yelp
Love coming to the BRI. Excellent service, food, and of course beer! If you're looking for a nice quiet pub to eat and relax this is the place to be.
google avatar

Yelp
My coworkers and I frequent BRI at least once a month. They always have a nice selection of craft beers and an interesting rotating beer menu. Today I tried the "Prik" a hazy IPA with prickly pear. It was pretty good. For lunch I had the Spanglish with tots. It's basically a BLT with Fried egg. They use their meat candy for the bacon. It was spicy with a lot of flavor. The tots were average. Overall a pretty good lunch. Will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
Excellent selection of beers. For every taste. My wife & I preferred one of the darker stouts but tried several samplers. Very good waiter. The grilled wings were awesome. I got the medium hot which were very mild. Next time I will get the hot. The ambiance was good. A young middle age crowd mostly. We are seniors but felt welcomed. We are already planning a return trip with friends. Very satisfied. Recommended.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place forever and now that we have, I'm sad we waited so long! Great vibe, super friendly staff, and easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. The patties were seasoned deliciously and cooked to perfection. This place will be a go-to for us from now on.
google avatar

Courtney R.

Yelp
Tried this place on a whim. Their 4oz comes in a cute little beaker. Didn't realize how small 4oz was until I got that. Wish they had more sour/fruited beer options as well as more non-alcoholic options.
google avatar

Dede S.

Yelp
Always good beer, plenty of seating and great food. I love their tots, I know, tots hard to mess with, am I right? Very inventive burgers, sandwiches and apps. I will not Skii the tots though.
google avatar

Rikki K.

Yelp
Came for lunch with friends. This little place is the coolest. I'm just telling you, the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich with the pickle tots! Good lord. Soooo good.

Hunter M.

Yelp
Found BRI on Google a few weeks ago. This is a nice quieter brewery. I have been two days in a row. Has a very good beer selection. Very impressed with the food. Good pricing on drinks. Will be back for more.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
I came in here to get some work done last Monday. The place wasn't too full and I was able to seat myself at one of the booths. They have free WiFi and it worked very well. I ordered myself a flight to try a few different beers. After a while I ordered a bowl of tots to munch on. The tots came out and it was more like a whole bag of tots! I'm telling you, order these as a side and share them between 4 friends. I ended up getting a second flight since I was still working and they had so many beers that I wanted to try. The service was great, as well as the beer and tots. I didn't try their other food but the menu had some tempting items. I think they have a Monday special for a burger/beer combo.

Yelp
Is it weird that I get more excited to visit Beer Research Institute (BRI) when I go to see a movie at the Stapley AMC theater? It's true! Whenever my husband and I make plans to see a movie our immediate next thought is, "BRI before or after?" The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and give you as many taste-testers as an ice-cream parlor. The atmosphere is chill and everyone is very welcoming and polite. I feel like I just got home but someone is offering me beer samples; therefore, it's better than home! The food is amazing. Everything I've had from the Cubano to pretzel bites, from the chicken sandwich to the mushroom swiss burger to the mac and cheese - everything is MONEY. Yes, it is absolutely delish and I always want to come back for more. You know the food is good when you want to try something new but can't help stick to what you've already had because you know it's so good! Beyond the food the beer is so delicious as well. The beer creations are unique and the flavors are amazing. Every beer I've had has been spot-on to the descriptions they provide and it you can taste every ingredient they've added. As I write this I can't wait to go back! Maybe I'll use the regular excuse to go see a movie so we can visit soon, I suggest you do the same.

Yelp
First time here and let me tell you! The burger is fire!!! Make sure you try the cali double with a nice cold beer! Definitely coming back! I also had to take their in house hot sauce!
google avatar

Drew A.

Yelp
This place is consistently good! Went here again yesterday with friends from work. I had the Cubano, very tasty! Also tried a new beer, the Prick. Funny when the server took our order and said 1 Urban Art and 5 Pricks. Made us all chuckle.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Great brewery and great service. I'm Irish so if you tell me I can get a great beer somewhere I'm 100% going. This place not only has great beer but great service and food too. They're always busy because of this they're so goodbut it doesn't seem to slow them down. This place just pulls it off on all fronts. Every time I see a movie next door I come early to go here. Updated to 5 star. They're so consistent. Great food, great beer, great service !!! I love this place.

Jack S.

Yelp
Good food & drinks in a casual atmosphere with friendly service. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Located in the WalMart shopping center next to the movie theater and behind BackYard Tacos.. this bar has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating .. cool relaxed bar We had a happy hour /after work event here.. wait staff was very attentive.. glasses were always full, lots of food, clean plates and plenty of napkins (for the wings).. huge list of beers but they also have regular alcoholic beverages .. I had the top shelf blueberry mule with fugu vodka (smooth) The hot and dry rub wings were delicious, you could taste the smoke from the grill .. lick your fingers good .. the pretzel bites with mustard & cheese sauce were good as were the not-chos with machaca .. I would definitely return and would recommend this place

Yelp
First time here. Overall decent place to check out with great service. The beer list is about the right size and the menu isn't too big. My wife enjoyed her Poutine Tots and Pub Burger. I had the Cuban with the side salad. Decent place that we will have to try again sometime.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Love BRI. The service, the ambiance, the great tasting craft beers that rotate through out the year. And their candied bacon is beyond amazing.
google avatar

Shannon D.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place with a girlfriend a few weeks ago! We honestly had a hard time finding this place when we got into the general shopping center, but glad we did (LOL)! The owner greeted us and sat us in a booth in the back corner, although it took about 20 minutes for anyone to come over to our table. My girlfriend got up to check with someone and the owner immediately came over and apologized. He was very friendly and professional. We ordered a few 2 or 4 oz beers and lunch. The vibe inside was very relaxed and had a ton of beer options. We were joking with the owner, I don't recall his name, and it was great. He was funny and gave us great recommendations. Would highly recommend if you're in the area or if you're looking for great beer options!
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place after I saw it on check please Arizona. I drove across town on a Saturday and met friends for a birthday lunch. They might have been having a bad day...they were out of several beers, my dark flight included a pale ale... Tried the bacon, - overcooked bacon with blobs of chili paste, not sweet, I should have passed. Waitress talked up the hot dog special, it was a foot long bun with a pathetic hot dog half the size of the bun, rolled in cheddar and sprinkled with something...very disappointing. I ordered the roast beef with green chilies, they were out. Tried the pastrami with fries. Underwhelmed with the sandwich, the pickle fries were GREAT! The guest who ordered the Nashville Chicken sandwich wished we had gone to the chicken place next store.
google avatar

Elvia A.

Yelp
We found out new spot for good food & even better craft beer. Service was on point, we were told happy house ALL DAY SUNDAY! They have a nice outdoor seating, bice k quiet where you can enjoy your food, beer & company. We will be back often!
google avatar

Daisy F.

Yelp
BRInis one of my favorite places to go. I usually get wings or a SW or Cobb salad. Service is always good and beer options are great. There is an arcade area that I have not checked out. Atmosphere is great, good for kids or date night.
google avatar

Jess R.

Yelp
I stopped here as I was waiting for my car to get serviced. I ordered the tots to snack on and was surprised to learn how big of a portion it was! It was not too busy during the day around 2/3pm on a Friday. All who attended me where extremely nice. The weather was beautiful outside. Prices are totally great. They have a front and back patio for outdoors, as well as indoor/bar seating. Definitely a chill vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer and decent food. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere, and mixed drinks on point. Restaurant is casual and inviting.

Yelp
In phoenix for a Muay Thai competition and needed a place for the team to eat. Found the Beer Research Institute on Yelp and was NOT disappointed. They took us as a big group on last minute reservations and has amazing service. They say us in a room off to the side that has old school arcade games and high top tables. We all enjoyed delicious appetizers such as poutine and chicken wings. Both great and we were huge fans of the poutine as it was cheesy, the gravy had great flavor and fries were crunchy. Beer selection was good and I was a huge fan of the sour beer. The burgers were bomb.. juicy, big, and flavorful. I would 100% recommend trying this place out!
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
Good food and beer was awesome. However the service was Awesome. French dip, poutine and the Spanglish were all top notch. Huge servings but very good. The Lolly was great.

Tom S.

Yelp
Great food and service. Burger with a fried egg on it is awesome and good craft beers.

Lee B.

Yelp
The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich brought tears to my eyes. And made my nose run. Bring tissues. It might keep me awake later tonight, but it's really good. And the beer is as good as I remembered. And the service is attentive and helpful. Nice atmosphere, too.

Yelp
My fiancé and I came in today after our cake testing for lunch as we've been eyeing this place down for quite some time. They were a little busy but nothing crazy and were seated right away! Our waiter brought us water right away and when he came back, recommended a few beers to try! We both got flights of beer as we wanted to try a bunch! Did these drink disappoint? NO! they did not. They exceeded expectation and were ready to eat! I ended up ordering the pulled pork bbq sandwich with tator tots and my fiancé ordered the cheese steak and dill fries! These sandwiches were both deliciousness I loved both as I tried a few bites of my fiancé's plate Overall I recommend coming here! You can even buy to go beers or growlers if you liked something on tap!
google avatar

Richard O.

Yelp
BRI is one of my favourite places to go to eat and drink a beer in Mesa. They have 16 beers on tap, the beer I had was called morning sex, its a stout, it has good coffee, vanilla, and a essence of has some chocolatey notes, and a little heavy. Very smooth and tasty. The Appetiser we had was the Meat candy delicious bacon with a Chipotle sauce and brown sugar made this bacon taste sweet salty and spicy, I loved it. I had a SW cheesesteak . The description was it's so good it's silly. Delicious steak and cheese sautéed onions and the southwest twist it had was three different kinds of peppers Anaheim peppers were so good, and provolone cheese.it was extremely good.
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
Stopped here on my latest trip to the Phoenix area! This place is actually in the Mesa Area! Didn't try the food only did the beers of which there were plenty to try! I had to do three flights to get through them all! The beers are well made and decent, but none of them really stand out, in fact I found them all to be rather pedestrian! Nothing wowed me! But the service was good, the beers were good not great but good, and the atmosphere was pleasant! I would definitely recommend stopping in if you're in the area, but this is not a place I would go out of the way to travel to! I did like the beaker jar tasters though, very cool and appropriate for the theme of the place!

Yelp
The food at Beer Research Institute BRI is curated by a wonderful chef. He pairs the "casual dining" menu with the excellent beers that are made ON SITE in their craft brewery. Check out the special brews along with the standard brews. It is a great place to meet friends. Their standard can size is still 16 ounces. That's hard to find.
