Beeside Balcony (LJ location) is in the middle of La Jolla downtown area. The view from its balcony is first-rate. Inside area is actually not that bad, with lots of natural light and a partial view of the ocean (as much as one can see beyond the balcony). There is also a side balcony (I believe this is what it's called), which I would try to avoid as it is busy - located in front of the entrance/exit, can get loud - a DJ spinning moderately loud music there, and it is devoid of any notable view besides the escalator.
There is a decent selection of America/Mediterranean meals with most of them sounding good, but unfortunately, the taste leaves something to be desired.
* Spanish Octopus - overall a good combination of tastes and well thought-out dish. Execution was not great in my case as the octopus was very tough. Don't order just this if you are hungry.
* Poutine Bowl was very tasty - if you are into eggs for brunch - and rich/generous.
* Lamb Gyro - Generous portion, but relatively tasteless meat unfortunately. And otherwise a simple dish.
* The cocktails we tried were just OK.
Our experience with service was mixed: the waitress was excellent, providing good info/advice about the dishes and checking on us at just the right frequency. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the hostess who rigidly refused to let us sit at a different table offering better views even though the two were otherwise equivalent (same seating and both indoor). The table we were not allowed to move to sat empty for the couple of hours we were there.
Overall, I won't say we had a bad time, esp. given the prime location. My feeling is that visitors vying for that particular location would gladly pay 20-30% more for the same menu, had the food been better prepared, and assuming a better skilled host(ess) was there to greet them.
