Before & After Café is an absolute surprising delight nestled in the small town of Sperryville. We stopped by didn’t know what to expect and were seriously impressed. The croissant breakfast sandwich was perfectly flaky, buttery and perfectly seasoned, the quiche was hearty and came with a fresh, crisp side salad. The espresso drinks are also beyond expectations. We ordered a latte and a hot chocolate, and both were beautifully crafted and rich in flavor—honestly better than many cafés in NYC. In a world of burnt beans and sad milk foam, this was a much-needed reset. The café’s quirky charm adds to the experience—vintage decor, cozy seating, and lots of duck-themed personality (thanks to SperryFest). Highly recommended for Shenandoah travelers.

Amazing place to go grab breakfast or coffee. Scones and bakery were great. I really liked the outdoor sitting space with river. Plenty of parking. Definitely go here.

Wonderful cafe located just ~30 minutes away from the entrance to Shenandoah National Park! I stopped by Before & After while driving up to Shenandoah for a weekend hiking trip. It started to rain in the late morning, so I figured I might as well take a beat to grab some food and read until it was possible to get outside again. I was super impressed by Before & After -- the space is super cozy and was filled with hikers who had my same line of thought, as well as a bunch of locals enjoying their weekends. The staff was incredibly friendly, and I loved chatting with them and browsing all the merch they had around the store, including a book about the Shenandoah Valley written by a Sperryville local (who one of the guests sitting next to me apparently knew personally!). I cozied up next to the fireplace with a latte and ginger scone, and it was a delightful way to spend the late morning. The latte was solid, and the scone was giant and super tasty. It had a great gingery kick and wasn't overly sweet at all, and it was buttery, slightly soft, and moist in the center with a nice crunchy exterior studded with ginger sugar. They also have a rotating seasonal scone, so I'm sure it'll be a hard choice between the ginger scone -- their all-time best-seller -- and whatever seasonal item they have in stock the next time I visit.

Nice little roadside café on our way to Shenandoah National Park. Delicious sandwiches and very friendly service. Cozy outdoor area. A riverside trail nearby. Highly recommend.

We stopped in on our way to skyline drive. We loved the location of this place. The spot out back was super cute with a few places to sit. We walked a little bit on the river walk out back. The coffee was cool, my husband had a lions mane latte and I had a regular latte. I had the turkey sandwich lunch box which was a bit too sweet for us but it was ok. He had the spinach and feta quiche which he thought was very good.

Google
Nice little cafe right in front of the Shenandoah National Park. One thing I noticed right away was that they use Intelligentsia Coffee beans. Their Black Cat Classic is one of my favorites, and I was pleasantly surprised they were using this particular brand. Oftentimes, local cafes tend to use their own roast or locally sourced beans, which can be hit or miss. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great local coffee beans in Virginia, but I was so glad to see a coffee taste I can just feel safe with. So naturally, I ordered an Iced Americano, and it was delicious. For a quick lunch, I ordered a Sausage Quiche, and it was great. The quality of the sausage in the quiche was amazing. It didn't feel salty, and the quiche itself had a little seasoning, so it balanced out nicely. The side salad that came with the quiche had a mango white vinaigrette dressing, I believe, and it offset the heaviness of the quiche. They have a cute little river walk right behind their storefront, so you should definitely check that out as well.

Google
Beautiful gem of a place, the atmosphere was lovely and the coffee was perfect. The food was solid but packaged in a way that was not great to eat on the go. We got icee Honeysuckle and Black Bear Lates as well as the breakfast sandwich, breakfast burritos, and a cinnamon roll coffee cake muffin. The black bear late was a perfect raspberry mocha. It had great seating inside and riverside seating out back with a decent amount of parking.

On a drive to the mountains, we wanted to make a stop in Sperryville and grab a coffee. We've been to town, but hadn't had coffee. Very good choice for a stop. I usually go for a mocha, but the honeysuckle caught my attention and I got a honeysuckle latte. I've been slowly coming around to scones and chose the ginger scone while my wife got their savory scone. Coffee was delicious. I'm not sure what flavorings they use, but the honeysuckle was distinct without being too floral and overpowering. My ginger scone was tasty. Lightly sweet, tender, and chunks of ginger (or candied ginger) mixed in. That savory scone, though... I tried a piece of it and wish I would have gotten one as well. That scone is amazing and highly recommended. Staff was super-friendly. While not just around the corner, I'm definitely hoping to make this place a part of our regular coffee rotation.

Yelp
Such a great lil nook! Fabulous ginger scone and cardamon latte!!!! Great staff. Busy because it has the best food & drink. Right next to riverwalk as well.

Yelp
Super cute little coffee shop on the main drag in Sperryville with fun coffee options and great food. We've stopped in here a few times and always had very friendly service, and the shop itself is a cozy place to sit and enjoy your coffee. I really like the extensive options they have for latte flavors (like lavender, spicy mocha, and cinnamon honey). There are always some tasty seasonal options in the breakfast case for muffins and scones; we also really like the breakfast quesadilla. Definitely worth a stop if you're passing through Sperryville.

Yelp
On our way into Shenandoah we needed caffeine stat! Heard nothing but great things about this place so decided to stop. I gotta say I was not expecting much but was completely blown away at the efficiency, atmosphere, and quality of the coffee! We stopped in on a Saturday morning around 9:30am and the place was hopping! Like super busy and full of people. With that said, service was still very good and we received our coffee's very quickly despite how busy they were. We really enjoyed our drinks that we went back in and got another one for the road lol. The atmosphere is really chill and there is a cool place out back to hang by a creek if the inside gets too busy and crowded. If you're heading in or out of Shenandoah and need coffee then stop here. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
The cutest place with great coffee and breakfast. It's full of locals but the kind who want to talk to those from out of town. The place is small but it's efficient. I had the ham and Gruyère cheese quiche and it was awesome. My friends had breakfast sandwiches. I loved my oat milk honey cinnamon latte!

Yelp
Day trip to Sperryville to see what the town is like. Much smaller than I anticipated, found this wonderful little cafe right around lunch time. Ordered: Latte- spot on! Turkey & fig sandwich- the bread was perfect, crunchy outside, and delicious inside. Took a little walk along the river path after lunch.

Yelp
Great morning stop for yummy breakfast (gotta get the quesadilla!) and coffee/tea. It is a rather tight space but there always seemed to be an open table. Service was okay...not overly friendly which was a little bit of a surprise for a small town coffee shop. But it didn't stop us from stopping in both mornings that we were in town!

Yelp
Atmosphere was cute and homey. The staff were friendly and helpful. Loved the menu options though it would have been nice to get box lunches to go before 11. Since we didn't want to wait, we just got breakfast. Nice to have alternate milk options for coffee. My quiche was delicious although could have been warmed up a bit more. My husband loved his breakfast burrito. Overall lovely and will definitely be back for a quick bite.

Yelp
Great little bakery/coffee shop with good sandwiches and great location sitting over the river. We love coming out to Sperryville to go hiking in the blue ridge, but finding a good, easy family place to eat can be hit and miss. It's nice to add a new place to our regular routine especially since Sperryville Trading Company closed. We got picnic boxes for us and our two kids after a long hike. Tarragon chicken salad was delicious and chunky and really nicely spiced (even a bit spicy) on croissant. Turkey and Brie with sweet balsamic onions on baguette was warm and fantastic. They even made special grilled cheese on focaccia for the kids when we asked what they could do. All the picnic boxes come with a bag of rustic potato chips and a huge, soft chocolate chip cookie to boot. The espresso isn't going to blow your mind, but it's perfectly decent and a nice perk. Maybe the nicest part is the fact that when you get your picnic box (or even while you're waiting) you can sit in chairs overlooking the river and let the kids play. There's even a little river walk through Sperryville that you can take if you want to venture further.

Yelp
I am such an iced Latte addict and so happy to have a great spot in Sperryville to get my fix. I often will take my coffee to go but there are plenty of spots to eat in. I am especially fond of the ginger scones that have real ginger in it! Also the boxed lunches are great for heading up for a quick hike. They come with chips and a cookie and are so easy. The service can be slow- but they are always so friendly and kind. Lots of fun local pieces of art for sale if that's your thing!

Yelp
I stopped here on the way home for a quick bite. It's a cute cafe, & the people working there were friendly. I ordered the Reuben, it was $14 (not including tax) it was a decent sandwich, but in all honestly wasn't worth that much. It came with chips, but they just give you a plate of plain chips, when they said it came with chips, I thought you got to choose it, so I grabbed the crab ones & thankfully they didn't charge me extra for the misunderstanding, so I appreciate that. In the back there are lawn chairs with a view of the river. The neighbors dog also joined me for lunch which I wasn't against! I just think for the price, it should be a meal with a drink or a cookie in addition to the sandwich.

Yelp
My wife and I found this lovely spot for coffee and breakfast sandwiches after looking through Yelp. Great option for coffee before going on a hike in Shenandoah NP. It was pretty busy for a Sunday morning at 9:15am on Labor Day Weekend. The cafe has been around since 2016 and is located in a restored house in historical Sperryville, VA. Several parking spaces are available in a lot on the back side of the house along with riverside seating in picnic style tables and Adirondack chairs. We tried the breakfast sandwich with chicken and burrito, which was a nice way to start the day. The coffee was very good. I really liked the informality and cute interior design of this local cafe - which is a pleasant way to start your hike. However, be sure to note that it can get quite crowded on weekends. So a little patience is needed as well. The cafe has a single restroom near the parking lot entrance to the building.

Yelp
The local cafe is posited on the notion that one will stop in both before and after one's hike nearby, ordering differently based on the situation. For me, it was actually in the middle of my day. I ordered a chai latte based on the impressive whole spices in the bags they had for sale, and it delivered a nice aroma without excessive sweetness. The place had all sorts of things going for it. Food and what looked like fancy imported gelato were available, and there was ample seating and notably, effective free wifi in an area where getting a signal might be dicey and you might really want to download a map or check on something. Their drinks do have milk alternative options at a significant extra charge, but it's pretty good that you can get these things this far off the beaten path at all. I've seen plenty of similar rustic touristy areas that did not have as good of a cafe as this.

Yelp
My friends and I were going on a hike near Sperryville and found this lovely cafe (remodeled house?) on our way. I just wanted to say that I probably didn't get the right thing here because there were other food options that sounded tasty and coffee (beans from Intelligentsia Coffee!) that I didn't try. It seems like people really love their lattes here. Sadly, I'm lactose intolerant and decided against buying a latte before the hike. They do have non-dairy milk options here, but my preference of oat milk for an additional $1.85 that I was reluctant to pay for. So apparently, they had picnic lunch boxes this weekend! Depending on the sandwich you get, each lunch box is about $15-20 and comes with a sandwich, a bag of kettle-cooked chips, chocolate chip cookie, half a pickle, and a non-alcoholic drink of your choice. This was honestly the perfect lunch right before our hike. HAM AND SWISS - 11 I opted out of the picnic lunch box option since I didn't want a cookie or drink. But hey, it still came in a nice little box and I got a tasty bag of chips. I also substituted the ham with turkey. The turkey was quite good, but everything else was just mediocre. I felt like this was a sandwich that I could easily make myself. The swiss cheese and honey mustard were pretty underwhelming. The croissant was flat and cold. I'm OK eating a cold sandwich, but my friend who ordered the same thing was not a fan and would have preferred it toasted. Overall, we would not recommend this sandwich if you don't want to spend money on something you can easily make at home. My other friend got the "SLICED TURKEY + GOUDA" sandwich and it was delicious! One single bite was enough for me to know that it was special. The jam (not sure what flavor it is) was a bit too sweet but it was unique and not something you can easily obtain in your own home. The gouda was amazing, as well. All in all, he still didn't think it was worth $20 for a picnic lunch box. My friends got the root beer (regular + blueberry?) drinks here which were refreshing but a bit too sweet. I had a sip of the blueberry and loved the flavor (I'm a sucker for blueberry flavored foods) but found it much too sweet. The chocolate chip cookie was just alright, nothing special. If I come back, I'm definitely giving the latte a try here! Seems like this is a lot of people's go-to here.

Yelp
Homey, friendly little cafe in the middle of a quaint little town at the foot of the National Park. My americano was *delicious* and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Their dog (who wanted desperately to come inside from the outdoor patio!) is also especially sweet. Definitely worth a stop!

Yelp
Best.cinnamon.muffin ever. We stopped here for breakfast on our way from Skyline Drive back to DC. What a find! Good coffee, great food, lovely people.

Vic T.

Yelp
Great find. I was passing through on my way to DC and ended up spending my day in this charming town. Before and After was the perfect place to unwind, check some emails and just chill out with a coffee. Its one of those savor the moment experiences, and I did!

Bitsy B.

Yelp
Wonderful little coffee shop with great service, ambiance and baked goods( including gluten free options) 10/10!

Yelp
This is a beautiful little coffee shop. Saw the great reviews on this place so I had to stop in and give them a shot. I love the outdoor seating right by the Stream. The staff there was friendly and was willing to answer questions about the menu. I was a little nervous when I first saw that there was no street parking out front, but there's is plenty of parking in the back.

Yelp
Awesome little coffee shop in Sperryville, VA! It's been around for about 3 years, but I don't usually look for caffeine while in Sperryville - so I never noticed it before! I was having breakfast nearby and needed some strong caffeine after breakfast before heading into Shenandoah National Park - so into "Before & After" I went! It's a cozy little space inside. I brought my own VT stainless steel insulated reusable cup - and ordered a latte. The barkeep was on top of things, he preheated my cup with hot water before making my latte! There is some limited seating inside. but what I think is really cool, is there are some chairs outside out back, right on the bank of the South Fork of the Thornton River. I plan to come back and get some coffee and sit on the bank and enjoy the peaceful sound of this small mountain stream bubbling and gurgling as it makes its way downstream. Parking is out back. When I left, I went out the front door, and was greeted by an adorable local dog who wanted some scritches! Cool place! #BeforeAndAfter

Yelp
Stopped in for a mocha after a hike. Coffee was very good and the service was decent. Would have left a 5 star but the barista wearing a devil worship shirt threw me off. Not sure that was the best choice of shirts to wear at work. But i guess he can chose his choice of shirt, and i can chose my number of stars.

Yelp
Went to see the sunrise and came to get coffee and breakfast afterwards - the service was impeccable and very accommodating and the food was freaking delicious!

Yelp
We were poking around Sperryville and stumbled upon this adorable coffee shop. We ordered coffee and because my friend was a Vet and it was Veteran's day weekend, his coffee was free. Gotta love that they love Vets. There seemed to be a blend of locals and visitors. The women at the counter were super friendly. The coffee was delicious, I didn't even need cream or sugar. I love the vibe of this place which is a cozy chic. We could have stayed all afternoon and we should have had lunch and a glass of wine - next time.

Yelp
Had a get together with my close friends here. The perfect place for a sandwich and matcha latte! I had the Turkey Brie Fig Sandwich and it was bomb! If you need a pick-me-up or sandwich for the road, this is the place to stop :)
google avatar

Ofri S.

Yelp
Charming little spot in lovely Sperryville. Their food is good quality and delicious. I had the turkey fig panini and my friend had the chicken pesto. We both really enjoyed our food, it was perfectly warm and the bread was soft but also crunchy from being toasted. I highly recommend this spot if you're in Sperryville! Also, it looked so yummy i forgot to take a photo before eating, so here is a photo of my half eaten panini. It came with chips and a pickle (so good!)

Yelp
If you are passing through Sperryville, perhaps on the way to Skyline Drive, and "Before & After" is open, stop in. It is with the stop.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, great coffee and a wonderful river view out back. Try the boxed lunch!

Yelp
Amazing!!! This place is such a hidden gem. We came here after hiking in Shenandoah, and this coffee shop has such a great atmosphere. The barista was so nice, and they had THE BEST vanilla lattes. Highly recommend coming here!!

Yelp
The greatest, seriously. If you're lucky enough to meet the owner be prepared with something clever to say, he is a font of knowledge. Both the staff and the space are utterly lovable.

Yelp
This place was amazing. Perfect atmosphere, very relaxing, quality ingredients, and nice staff. So happy we accidentally stumbled onto this place and would definitely return.

Yelp
I wasn't trying to make my 400th review anything particularly special--but I secretly hoped it would work out that way. Well lucky me when I found this lovely coffee shop on my little getaway trip! I knew I was going to be hungry after finishing up hiking at Shenandoah National Park, so I had just planned to find a little hole in the wall to get into & out of quickly on the drive back south. When I found Before & After on Yelp, I could tell it would be a step up from some of the old restaurants in the area. Once I saw their menu I knew this was where I wanted to go! Once my GPS showed I had arrived, I quickly began to look for parking as there seemed to be none in sight. Thankfully, I soon after saw a (small) sign directing you behind the building. I got the last available spot! I walked into the shop and was greeted by a sweet woman behind the counter. I ended up ordering the grilled cheese & an iced rosemary latte. The ooey, gooey panini hit the spot with its cheese trio pulling apart just as it should. Now for my drink: I honestly was ready to write my review immediately, because it was so good that I needed to boast. I literally smiled to myself (with teeth!) after I tried it, I was so impressed. I like to think I know a thing or two about what's good coffee, but whether you do or you don't, you'd agree with me that this drink was divine. The rich taste of espresso cut through the milk and balanced with that rosemary flavor in a way that simply made my taste buds sing. I savored every sip. I brought my bookbag with me on my drive in case I found a spot to get work done, but I was skeptical of what would be in the area. To my surprise, I really did find THE spot! B&A was the ideal setting: super bright, comfortable seating, outlets, and of course that dreamy historic-mountain-town feel surrounding you. I was SO glad to find a local spot where I could be productive while on travel as a remote worker. I didn't have cell service, so thank God for that good good WiFi they had to top off my already-amazing experience. Man, I would come here all the time if I were local. As Yelpers we love to find hidden gems in all of the places we travel to, but not all of them stay in our memory past the pictures and review. However, I'll definitely remember this coffee shop long after my trip is over.

Matt S.

Yelp
Before & After is a wonderful place for a casual breakfast or lunch right in Sperryville. The owner was really nice and I'm not sure I've ever had a better latte! The sandwiches are delicious as well. If you're hiking Old Rag, grab a latte here *before* or a lunch *after.* The inside space is really cute (looks like they do wine and gelato too) - but the outdoor seating area out back is just a wonderful place to relax either in a group or by yourself just with a book. I definitely plan to stop back next time I am in Sperryville.

Yelp
WOW!! What a HIDDEN GEM! my son said they had the Best Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad He had EVER had and this boy eats ONLY the Caesar Salad every where we go! My mother said this was the absolute Best Hummus plate she had ever had and loved the fresh naan/pita bread and said the heat in the Hummus was JUST RIGHT and I $hit you NOT that I had the MOST AMAZING CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH OF MY LIFE!! Toasted freshly baked croissant and Tarragon Chicken Salad! MY GOD IT WAS HEAVENLY!! I I'm so ticked off that this beautiful slice of Heaven is SOOOO far away! I swear I will drive an HOUR out of my way if I come close to this town in the future....NO OTHER REASON why I'd come but to get more delectable food from this lovely spot! And the Coffee was JUST as good!! YuuuuuM!

Sabrina M.

Yelp
Charming cafe with great food, drinks and views. We stopped here two days in a row on our weekend getaway. I tried the spinach and mushroom quiche, they were amazing! The cream soda is something I didn't know I needed. Love this place!

Rosemary K.

Yelp
Oh my gosh!!!! I drove to Sperryville to go to the farmer's market. I specifically went to purchase something from the baker there. Unfortunately, the scones I got were awful. My niece looked up another bakery in town, "Before & After". Fantastic pastries!!! I got the cranberry orange scone. My palate was extremely pleased! This was the best scone I have ever eaten!!! I'm a chef and baker and let me tell you, this place should be your first stop if you are in Sperryville. I am going to go back soon. I want to try more ! My sister got a coffee cake and my niece got the chocolate croissant. They both loved them! Highly recommend this bakery. It's also an adorable little town!

Yelp
A little coffee shop heaven is just what I needed after hiking and camping on a chili weekend in Shennandoah National Park. I was looking for breakfast and some piping hot tea and this adorable little coffee shop/wine bar was beyond what I'd hoped for. The young people working there were ultra sweet unlike the city kids with attitude that Im used to. The restaurant is in what looks like two adjoined houses in old town (Main St) Sperryville. There are cute tables with comfortable chairs in both seating areas. I saw a patrons hanging out with their laptops and also people like us in hiking clothes who'd come from the park. They have loose leaf tea which is so rare and the ultimate reason for the perfect rating. I ordered a chai tea (they were out of english breakfast, but I gave them a pass this time) and the breakfast sandwich on a croissant. Both were excellent. The tea was served in a neat diffuser that dispenses right into your cup. The breakfast sandwich was amazing with fluffy eggs cooked with ground sausage and cheddar cheese on a FRESH baked croissant. I could not have asked for anything more!

Yelp
Cozy cafe with vegan options! The (Vegan) tomato soup was sooo good, just a little spicy so be prepared for that kick. I also had the turmeric latte with hemp milk (my first time having hemp) and was mightily impressed. My boyfriend had the lucky charms latte (nonvegan, comes with caramel and Irish cream) and said it tastes just like breakfast)!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing sandwiches and paninis at a reasonable price. Easy ordering online or outside with a side pickup window. A great stop to pick up lunch on the way into or out of the park. Turkey and Brie was so good. Wish we lived closer.

Yelp
Great spot! I love the lavender iced latte. The chocolate croissants, savory scones, and lemon poppyseed muffins are to die for! I've always had great service here and the staff is super friendly. The relaxing and cozy ambiance is a bonus!- not to mention the great outdoor seating in the back next to the creek:)
google avatar

Yelp
Every once and awhile you find a gem, and this is one of them! Nestled next to a bumbling brook, Before & After delivers not only a long sought after cafe but endless charm. The man I spoke with was beyond friendly and informative with giving camping and attraction recommendations. The coffee is spectacular (notes of chocolate and nut)! The breakfast croissant sandwich is made of quality ingredients and full of flavor...I wanted another one! Thank you guys!

Yelp
We enjoyed great sandwiches sitting by the Thornton River surrounded by trees in spectacular fall colors. Hard to beat.

Yelp
Phenomenal!!! I want one of these at home in Va Beach! The service was incredible, the food was delicious and the coffee was amazing. I could not brag more about this place. We will definitely be stopping back by after our hike.

Jason A.

Yelp
The coffee was well done. And the staff is very friendly. I like that there is parking in the back and a free lending library. I got a cookie, but it was over done and pretty dry.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Stopped here for cup coffee. Great place to stop. Espresso Coffee is top notch with great organic flavors.. maple, lavender, honeysuckle, etc. We ordered a bite to eat, which also was wonderful. Home made breakfast burrito and quiche were the best. They were pretty busy, but my only suggestion would be for them to remember your patrons and be friendly. The focus was pride month there... so if one is pushing tolerance and "love," ... allow it to show in patience and a smile.

Yelp
I stopped by this small café in the morning because the cell service in the area was poor for me and I needed Wi-Fi to look up instructions on how to get to the Old Rag trailhead. As such, I got some breakfast: a croissant and some green tea. The croissant did not taste too fresh but was ok. After I hiked Old Rag, I was hungry and returned because it was the only food spot I knew was close by in the area. Lunch at Before and After was amazing. The chicken pesto panini was excellent. One of the reasons I enjoyed it must have been because I was starving after a long hike. Nevertheless, it was definitely delicious. The chicken was tender and not dry. The pesto flavor was very good. The panini was very hot. The bread was toasted perfectly. If you are planning a trip to Shenandoah National Park and looking for recommendations, feel free to message me for my itinerary. You can also find the electronic copy through the link my profile.

Yelp
The cutest little coffee shop/cafe! They have plenty of seating and they even have a little shop area. The staff was friendly & the latte I got (cinnamon) was really good. They have food as well as drinks. I happened upon them one morning driving through Sperryville & just had to stop in.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop in Sperryville, VA right by one of the entrances to Shenandoah National Park. If you are looking for light lunch or caffeine before or after (pun intended) your trip there, this is a great spot. We received kind service and our espresso beverages were exactly as expected. The croissants and other pastries were quite good as well. The shop is in an old house on the very small main strip. The ambiance is spot on with an old Virginia farm town. They even had a shop dog to keep us company. Plenty of parking around back.

Yelp
I placed a $30 online order. Once the order was ready, it took three tries for them to give me my food. I overheard the staff saying they refused to say my name because it's hard to pronounce. So, instead of naming the items in the order or trying to say my name, they refused to call it out and just never called my name. When friends in my party tried to get my order, they would not give us the food.
