We were searching for dim sum in Chinatown and found Begoni Bistro. Thought to give it a try. We noticed there weren't many locals here and prices were quite high. We might be natives, but we rarely eat dim sum in Chinatown and this would be a new experience for us.
The restaurant was a step up from a hole in the wall, so I guess that's why the prices weren't "Chinatown" prices. But these days, there's no such thing as Chinatown prices anymore! Except for the C rated produce after 4 pm where it's marked down and stores are closing, it seems everything has gone up! No matter where you're at in the city, you're breaking the bank!
In any case, we were seated quickly and at this point, at least 75% of the tables were occupied. It was 2pm and it's still pretty busy.
We ordered a few dim sum dishes and a beef chow fun to fill us because dim sum is a light meal with little bites here and there. More often, you leave hungry, so we made sure we went away full and satisfied. However, the beef chow fun was a bit heavy on the tummy and made me feel more full than I would have liked. I couldn't eat the steamed egg yolk buns for dessert and had to box them to-go. Here's the rating of what we ordered:
*Beef chow fun - a bit greasy and heavy 3/5
*Fish and chive steamed rice rolls (only 2 rolls were given) - good but small 4/5
*XLB soup dumplings - the top of the dumplings were hard, soup was ok, meat filling could be softer. 2/5
*Steamed beef balls - tasted average. 4/5
*Steamed egg yolk buns - they give you 3 and when I finally had them at home, they were still pretty good after a few seconds in the microwave. 4/5
We ordered chrysanthemum tea and they charge $1.75 per person. They do give you a pot, so you're able to pour your own tea whenever you'd like.
Service was average. We got our food in a reasonable time. But trying to pay for our bill took awhile to grab someone's attention. We had to wave our hand a few times before someone came to our table.
Food was ok, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. For the price, I might as well pay premium for dim sum in the Richmond District.
