On the Grid : Bei Oma Kleinmann

"Bei Oma Kleinmann is a small Cologne institution with a neighbourhood feel. Their specialty is schnitzel. Big schnitzels. Schnitzels with lemon...or mushroom sauce...or a fried egg. Yep, we're not kidding. Come with an appetite or after a few beers, trust us on this one. Walk in and give your name, grab a cold kölsch and wait patiently until a table frees up. Stick around for another nice cold Kölsch in the traditional ambiance after dinner - it's open until 1am. As a tourist or as a local, Bei Oma Kleinmann is definitely a box you have to tick." - ONOGRIT

Tony met with Tracey Gudwin (friend and former producer for No Reservations) and Anke Lönne, a resident of Cologne. They had schnitzel, which Bourdain describes as “surfboard-sized slabs of veal and pork filled with many wonderful things, dredged in breadcrumbs and fried in magical, magical deep fat.”

Love this place! ❣️ One of the best restaurants in Köln, with a very nice and pleasant atmosphere. The food is delicious and comes in generous portions. They offer a wide variety of Schnitzel, along with many other tasty options to choose from. The place can get a bit busy, but the staff is very friendly and helpful in finding a seat. I will definitely visit again and again whenever I’m in Köln. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience!

Google
Great German restaurant in Cologne, a hidden gem and definitely one to visit, we were the only non Germans in there but the servers English was fanatasic and they took the time to explain the menu (menu is also avaliable in English). I had the veal Budapest, and it was massive value for money is well up there but it's also really tasty. We got there later in the evening 2000, had to wait maybe 10 minutes for a table but it's worth every second

Google
Really good homemade schnitzel. There’s a choice of 4 types of meat/ veg options all with different sauces and carb options. Very big portions and cheap nice local beer. Would definitely recommend

Google
Very busy on a Saturday night. We didn’t book but got a table within an hour. Food was great ! And very filling. The pour on sauces were very rich and tasty, perhaps a little salty.

Google
Not only the best schnitzel in Köln, but so far one of the best we ever tried. We had the pork and the cheese one (Im vegetarian). They have a wide variety of schnitzel and vegetarian options. Local beer is 10/10

Got here at 5pm on Saturday just as they opened and managed to get seats at the bar. It's a very busy place and people were soon waiting for seats. The staff were great and very accommodating (despite our limited German)- we had the Budapest and the Olaf Maria schnitzel (pictured) both of which were delicious and huge. Finished the meal off which some plum schnapps, which was perfect to keep the cold away! First time visiting Cologne and would highly recommend.

If you enjoy schnitzel and want one that will leave you full, then this is your stop. The schnitzel is essentially the size of the plate and comes with a salad and form of potato. They have many different sauces (we had the Jager and the Chili Lili: tomatoes based sauce), and both were delicious. They have pork, beef, cheese, and a vegetable schnitzel to choose from, so there is something for everyone. The service was great considering how busy it was. A reservation is highly recommended, although if you get there early enough, you may be able to walk in. Overall, this was a great place for dinner.

Google
We ordered the plain beef schnitzel. Although one portion seems to cost around 30 euros, don’t let that scare you — if you’re dining as a pair, they split the portion in two and serve it that way, and it’s quite sufficient. A salad is served on the side; we liked the salad, but unfortunately, we can’t say the same for the schnitzel — it was too greasy. The boiled potatoes served alongside were quite ordinary.

Yelp
While in Germany for a few days on a recent trip, all I wanted was a schnitzel and a donor - and Bei Oma's definitely delivered the schnitzel! I was vacationing with a vegan friend, so I loved that this restaurant let her try this German staple, while I got the traditional version. She opted for a traditional portion made from celery root, while I had the pork jager schnitzel (comes with a mushroom, cream sauce) and fries. It was everything I wanted - crispy, thin and seasoned well!

Yelp
Ok, I've learned that there is indeed such a thing as too much schnitzel. Yes, I'd seen the photos, and yes I thought I was prepared, but in reality I absolutely was not. Thank goodness I had made a reservation at least, the reviews all mentioned that was vital. We arrived 15 minutes early and were seated right away. The crowd seemed to have died down a bit, though the place was still pretty full. We were seated next to a table of 5 from the UK, so obviously the word about this place has gotten around. Our server was great. Between our little bit of German and her English we were able to order with no problems. My wife got the Jager Schnitzel which has a mushroom gravy and I got the classic Wiener Schnitzel. Hers came with fries underneath (they were hidden at first but a nice surprise once she had eaten some of her schnitzel) and mine came with warm potato salad. The beer was amazing, the schnitzel was amazing, the salad was ok, but I haven't had an amazing salad in Germany yet I think. The service was good and overall it was a wonderful meal and a great place to go for the first meal of our 10 day tour of Germany. You will not leave hungry. By the way, my wife isn't a huge meat eater and a week later she said that was her favorite meal of the trip, so I consider that a success.

Yelp
I arrived around 5:30 pm on a Saturday and got seated promptly. I ordered Kolsch and one of the schnitzels that comes with a spicy tomato sauce. The menu is very straightforward and you pick the protein you want. I went with pork. A side of salad came first and it was dressed just right. Then the schnitzel came after I finished my salad. It's fried to golden brown perfection and sitting on a bed of fries. I was able to finish almost half of the schnitzel before asking for a to-go box. The couple next to me shared one (and finished it) and another customer also packed his leftover to go. Actually it tasted pretty good after reheating in a pan. I saw customers taking their dogs inside btw :)

Yelp
First time to Germany and authentic German food. This was our first meal here and will be memorable. The veal schnitzel is amazing. And the mushrooms sauce is ridiculously good!

Yelp
This place was an amazing exhibition in old time, traditional food and service. We sat outside and it was fantastic for people watching, and just really being immersed in the vibe of the city. Service was fantastic. Very timely. Continuing to ask if we want to drinks. The food took about as long as it does at any quality German restaurant, but when it came out, it was amazing!highly suggested if you want a traditional well done schnitzel.

John S.

Yelp
Favorite place in Germany! Huge portions, friendly service, cool ambiance! Lots of locals and few tourists.

Yelp
My wife and I ate here at the recommendation of a train seat mate as well as our waiter at a pub the night before. Both said that this was their favorite restaurant in Cologne for schnitzel. What better recommendation could you ask for than two locals recommending the same restaurant in the span of a couple hours. We, of course, had to go. I am glad we did as this was not on our radar from Yelp or google simply because of the radius search from our hotel. We took a cab from the train station (right near our hotel) to the restaurant and got there about 10 mins before it opened. There was already a line and we got the last outside table. It was about 30 minutes before we got our meal because everyone ordered at once, but the beer was flowing and the weather was perfect so we did not even notice. The schnitzel was hands down the best I have ever had and I was full with a full plate remaining. The portions are huge and that does not take away from the quality. I would recommend this to anyone and just get the original, it is a classic for a reason.

Yelp
Schnitzel for days! Love love love. They didn't speak English and we didn't speak German but we were able to talk Schnitzel. Great place

Jay J.

Yelp
The best schnitzel in the world. Worth the long wait for foreigners. Unfortunately they were out of the veal option so go early.
google avatar

Eunjee C.

Yelp
As a group of five, we ordered a mixed salad, beef/original schnitzel, the vegetarian (cheese only(?)) Schnitzeland the anchovies (sorry, I can't remember the actual name) The servings were big, salads were so fresh and delicious, anchovies were very salty, but regardless, the schitzels were all very delicious, big in portion, and worth the price!

Yelp
Oh my schnitzel, where have you been all my life? We ended up in Cologne for a spontaneous day trip, and found incredible reviews for this place. Without reservations, we took everyone's advice and showed up right at 5:00PM. Luckily enough, they had a few extra tables for us to choose from. As for the food, one of the best meals I had in Europe! I went with the schnitzel and green pepper sauce, the sauce was life changing. I could put that on anything! The potato salad was good too, and how could you go wrong with a German beer? If ever back in Cologne, we will be here without a doubt.

Yelp
Schnitzel as big as your head! My boyfriend is German. As in from there, lives there. German food isn't wildly celebrated, mostly I'd say because it's heavy and not packed full of flavor. So when I asked him to take me to his favorite German-centric food spot, this is where we landed. That being said, this place totally changed my views on German food. We went on a Tuesday at 7:45 and it was PACKED! We had to wait 40mins but nothing that a few kolschs cant fix. I ordered the spicy sauce version, he got the gravy version. The schnitzel is large, like two meals large. It's fried, but so incredibly light and full of flavor. Make sure to squeeze some lemon on it too to elevate the dish. Even the fries were awesome, which fries are generally good as a baseline but these are stellar. Honestly my favorite part was the salad! Woah. That dressing was amazing. The woman next to us got a double order of salad, sans fries. Next tone we go (which we will) that's what I plan on doing. Best part? Schnitzel is actually hella good the next day, cold. We took it on our hike to Dragon Castle and it was the perfect snack. Bei Oma rocked my world and totally changed my perception on German food.

Yelp
Tonight we dined here and it was AMAZING!!! The decor, food, and service was IMPECCABLE. I read how popular this restaurant was so we expected a wait. It was well worth the wait and the best food we've had in Cologne!
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
The most perfect schnitzel I've ever had. And they give you enough of it to build a surfboard (or at least a skimboard). I got the one that comes with this excellent mushroom gravy and it was all just extraordinary. The breading tasted great, the texture was perfect. Next time I'm in Cologne I'm 100% going back. This is the platonic (and non-platonic) ideal of a schnitzel.
google avatar

Yelp
When i come back to Cologne, I will make this a must to return here. They Specialize in Schnitzel and they do not disappoint. I ordered the schnitzel with caramelized opinions on top. It came on a bed of potatoes and did not disappoint! We ended up ordering some chili sauce to compliment the schnitzel. The service is great, the food is superb, my only gripe is that we had to make a reservation, do not expect to walk in and eat dinner. The doors open promptly at 5, either be first in line, or have a reservation (we got ours by being first in line the previous day) Anyways, the food is worth the Hassle! Proust!

Yelp
Best schnitzel in Cologne. A must try if you want to taste the finest schnitzel cologne can offer. I highly recommend the jaeger one, the creamy mushroom sauce goes perfectly with the meat and potatoes. They also offer Veal for those that can't eat pork! It's a win win for everyone! As for beer they serve the Sunner Kolsch here, nothing better to wash down schnitzel then kolsch.
google avatar

Kelvin C.

Yelp
The BEST and largest schitzel I had in Germany belongs to Bei Oma Kleinmann. Got it with the mushroom sauce as well as the green pepper sauce and it was fantastic. And guess what, the schnitzel actually comes with a side salad which is a rarity here in Germany since all they eat are potatoes, meat, and pickled stuff. While there can be a lot of people queued up here, the turn-around time seemed to be pretty fast and we were seated within 20 minutes. Their Kolsh and Hefeweizen are pretty solid and complete the meal. Definitely a must visit while in Cologne. 4 stars.
google avatar

Amy Jo J.

Yelp
Delicious meal from the Salad to Schnitzel! Portions are large and very filling. Highly recommend reservations or go when the open at 1700 and join the already waiting line.
google avatar

Pam L.

Yelp
This place is the best! We shared the traditional wienerschnitzel, which was huge and yummy and as expected, the beer was cold and flowing. What made this establishment so amazing though was the people. The bartender was super friendly and a great conversationalist, as were the locals we got to know during the 4 hours we spent talking, laughing, eating and drinking! One of the most enjoyable evenings we've had!
google avatar

Yelp
Schnitzel heaven! If you are in Cologne, Germany, don't miss the best Schnitzel you will ever eat. This is a small, extremely busy, family restaurant serving grandma's famous schnitzel recipe for years. Great ground earth and friendly vibe. A little out of the way from the city touristic center but very worth while. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Well established Restaurant with succulent German food in a very popular area of town, famous for excellent Schnitzel ( think twice before ordering the monumental size "big" portion) . Better to reserve in advance , the place is very popular .
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
If you want schnitzel then come here. Well worth the detour from the main centre. Like reviews before this one, don't eat beforehand! Portions are HUGE. Had a schnitzel bigger than my chest. I went for the Holland schnitzel, which was with satay sauce - fantastic. Girlfriend went for the Bombay, which was with pineapple curry sauce. Both were amazing! Chips were also good and the service was great as well, everyone serving us were really friendly. Even though the place was fully booked, they found a place for us so that was good. Try and book a bit beforehand if possible! If not, I'm sure they'll find you a place depending how early you arrive.

Yelp
Took my mother here when she was visiting me while living in Köln... absolutely a no brainer. The food, ambiance, service, and culture were all top notch and it shows at this restaurant. Locals, tourists, and people of all over the city can be seen in this restaurant and the schnitzel proves why. Get a reservation ahead of time and enjoy the delicious homemade food with friends and have a great time. The mushroom sauce on the side is a must for any of the orders you get. I will be returning with my friends for my birthday dinner. 9/10
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Excellent schnitzel and fries were solid as well! I went with the Jaeger schnitzel (most German schnitzel as recommended by our waiter) but the mushroom cream sauce was just ok. However, still a great meal. The salad is under-rated. You get lettuce, red & white cabbage, sunflower seeds, and a light/tasty dressing. Huge portions and cash only. They also have vegetarian schnitzel (celery or cheese). Make reservations well in advance. Highly recommend

Yelp
Every time I think back to our meal here, little hearts float above my head. What a terrific restaurant! We came here after reading some good reviews and seeing photos of the giant schnitzels, but the reviews and the photos don't do it justice. The atmosphere at Oma Kleinmann's is what really makes it stand out, and that can't be photographed. It was much smaller than we expected, and very full. This was no problem for the friendly hostess, who just sat us at a table with some other diners who greeted us kindly and had no problem with sharing their table. In fact, everyone here is super friendly, even if your German is bad! The server was also so kind to our daughter and brought her coloring pages. So there we were, drinking lots of Koelsch, relaxing in the conviviality, having an all around excellent experience, when we were presented with the hugest schnitzel I have ever seen. Even the "kids' size" schnitzel was enormous! At this point,we had to prepare ourselves to be sick, because those schnitzels were so huge, and so delicious, that we knew we were going to eat the whole damn thing. Not to mention that the schnitzel lies atop a mound of fries, and there is a really wonderful salad on the side as well. I am getting a little teary eyed thinking back to that plate of food. And hungry. Kid loved it so much that for a week she asked for schnitzel in every restaurant we ate at. Needless to say, we all practically rolled out the door when we were done. Eat here. Do it. It was our favorite meal in Germany and one of the best on our entire European trip.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
I think it's everyone's goal to try schnitzel when in Germany. The service was great. The meal for me though was just ok. Maybe schnitzel isn't for me or maybe this isn't the best place for it? It's worth a visit as it comes highly recommend.
google avatar

Klaus H.

Yelp
If you're looking for a genuine German food experience away from the super touristy areas then Oma Kleinmann at Zuelpicher Strasse in Cologne is a great choice. The Schnitzels are huge but it's also good quality at an affordable rate. In the summer you can sit outside. Come hungry, otherwise it's kind of a waste to go there.
google avatar

Bill V.

Yelp
Without a doubt the best Jager Schnitzel in all of Köln. I've eaten at dozens of restaurants throughout the city, and this small place serves up the most delicious pork I've ever had. It is an absolutely must have!
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
Best schnitzel I have had in my life! My large schnitzel was perfectly cooked and juicy. It was an epic meal to say the least! Very fun German restaurant. I hope to return someday soon.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
My wife and I were just reminiscing yesterday about how great our experience was at this restaurant. We went along last December while in town for Christmas markets and chose to come out of our way here because of the online reviews. It was a very memorable experience - they made us feel so completely welcome despite our lack of German language skills and that it felt like a proper locals restaurant. We don't drink and so we stuck to the local non-coke cola (but it was good). I had the schnitzel and but wife had a stuffed pork cutlet. Both were excellent with simply a crazy portion size as you can see from the photo- it's about the size of my head (and I don't have a small noggin). If we're ever back in this fine city then I'd make a beeline for here. One of the finest meals I've had on holiday.
google avatar

Carlie V.

Yelp
What a Schnitzel!! We celebrated a friend's birthday here and had a wonderful experience! We had to wait a little while for a table, but the servers invited us to get beers at the bar and hang out outside before we could be seated. As we were in a big group, we ordered the family style schnitzel dinner. This was great because we were able to try all the available sauces for the schnitzel. If you are looking for any sort of schnitzel this is the place for you!

Blaine G.

Yelp
These folks are the best! Everyone else will tell you about the food, I will tell you about the best customer service on Earth. Went for dinner, group of eight. Ate a great meal, lots of beer. Left the restaurant and returned to our cruise ship. As the ship left the city I realized I left my hat in the restaurant. Called the restaurant the next day. Long story short, I arrived back in California and my hat was at my house. They only asked to be reimbursed the postage. I'll be back
google avatar

Dylon W.

Yelp
It truly is just like what my grandma (oder Oma) would make at home. The schnitzel and side dishes are delicious. My favorite is the warm potato salad washed down by a beer or two and a traditional schnitzel with mustard...but the best thing is this place gives you options. If you are in Köln I highly recommend you stop here and grab a bite. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
Came here for the schnitzel after reading the yelp reviews. The wait was 20 min but it was worth it. You don't go here for the service but for the food! The veal schnitzel is really goood and big.
google avatar

M L.

Yelp
Most delicious Schnitzel!! Must make reservation at least a week in advance. Busy everyday.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
If you are in Köln (Cologne) and want some fantastic schnitzel this is a great place for the real deal. We ate at the bar and made friends with the locals. My wife drank the local beer and if you like a light flavored beer you should try it. The veal schnitzel comes with 4-5 different sauces and we each tried a different mushroom sauce. WARNING the veal schnitzel has two pieces each the size of your face. The breading was perfect. It was cooked perfect. Some of the best schnitzel we have had anywhere on the planet- just like Oma used to make!
google avatar

Dirk D.

Yelp
Really one of the best places i've eaten in Cologne, really nice service, great food! Don't expect to show up with a party of 5+ after 7 pm because probably you won't get a table, better reserve in advance. The people there are really friendly!
google avatar

Jason T.

Yelp
This was a great find! The local gentleman I spoke to wondered how we found it, as it is frequented by locals. The food was superb and huge portions! Get the Schnitzel! It is some of the very best I've had in over 2 years in Deutschland!
google avatar

Estela D.

Yelp
Great schnitzel we has the jaeger schnitzel and it was delicious, great service and good price. Is off the beaten path of Cologne but well worth the visit, make sure that you go at at a good time because it is BUSY! Great place, do not miss it!
google avatar

Darwin G.

Yelp
The best schnitzel I've ever had. I've had really bad service throughout Europe, including Cologne and the rest of Germany, but the woman I had was extremely attentive and kind about the fact that I only spoke English, which is a huge relief when one eats out. They'll keep serving you kolsch with your meal, or while you wait. The beer comes in little .2L glasses for about 2 Euro each. As for the schnitzel, the server was helpful with a spicy pepper creamy sauce. I didn't love it, but it was decent and I would imagine the other sauce being better. However, the schnitzel is absolutely delicious. A light crust, perfectly fried, and moist on the inside. It is freaking ridiculously huge. Just look at the pictures. I would suggest splitting it with someone as one has to be crazy to finish it by yourself. It came with really delicious roasted potatoes. One of my favorite meals in Germany.
google avatar

Jeroen V.

Yelp
Good german food. The atmosphere is hippie like but Bei Oma is that great little place that you remember. Must eat in Köln. Only cash payments accepted. The waiter could be a more friendly. Not rude but he acted like he did not care. But the price of the schnitzel makes up for that.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Amazing schnitzel! Service was attentive even with a party of 12. A must stop in Koln. This is one of those rare places that becomes an institution in the community that us talked about and stands the test of time as other establishments try to make it. Consistently delivers one of the largest, best schnitzels to comfort the tastebuds and fill the belly of even the biggest if appetites. Old world decor truly makes it feel like grandmas place. The final test if you are still on the fence..... It's always PACKED by both locals or visitors.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Fantastic amazing inspiring schnitzel! Every bite was incredible! We ordered ours with the green pepper sauce which I didn't love but my husband seemed to like it. The sauce comes on the side, so you can try it before dousing your schnitzel with sauce. It comes with a salad, which was surprisingly good. We ordered an extra salad (the one with the goat cheese "croutons") and omg... this salad was just like the one that comes with the schnitzel except that it has toasted pieces of baguette with huge pieces of broiled goat cheese on it. I couldn't believe the amount of goat cheese that came with this salad. This place is worth a try! We don't have any pics of our meal because we wolfed it down so fast. ALSO: GET THERE AT 5:00 PM OR ELSE YOU'RE GONNA WAIT. CASH ONLY!
google avatar

Mercy G.

Yelp
Best schnitzel in Köln. Stop looking. This is it. Difficult to get a table but worth the wait. Any visitor we have to Germany, I take here. They have a mushroom sauce with bacon for the schnitzel...yum.

Julia L.

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a final night of traveling! It was a rainy Tuesday and we still had to wait for about 40 minutes before a table was ready for us. This place was very popular and filled with locals and travelers alike. The waiters were very friendly and put our names on a list while we waited outside and drank kölsch. When we were seated, my daughter and I both ordered the child sized schnitzel plates (more than enough, trust me, but go big or go home if you want the original sized schnitzel). She got the jaeger sauce and I got the green pepper and onion sauce. The meals came with a pre-dressed salad and fries and/or roasted potatoes. The atmosphere was convivial and the food was superb! Will definitely return next time I'm in Cologne!
google avatar

Rizki A.

Yelp
The schintzel tastes good enough and big portion. But, this place is always full. I went there with a reservation. We got a table, but after we finished our food. They gave us the bill already..i think its super impolite way to ask your cust to leave!!
google avatar

Angie C.

Yelp
Fantastic! Had seen the restaurant online and its reviews were validated. We went for an early dinner, but didn't realize we should have made a reservation. Even still, they were able to accommodate us! The server was wonderful and the schnitzel... amazing! We ordered the smaller portion and it was still too much to eat. The salad was very tasty and had a delicious dressing. Can't wait for our next trip. Definitely plan to go back!!

Mike S.

Yelp
One of the top highlights of my trip to Germany. The size of the schnitzels they offer has to be seen to be believed. I got a Jagerschnitzel, and it had a very creamy, rich gravy sauce poured on it. I am a fast eater and it took me half an hour to finish the schnitzel. It was a great experience all around. The waiter that I interacted with was very friendly and engaging, asking me where I was from and how I liked the food. He was genuinely pleased to hear the rave compliments I sent his way.

Mark S.

Yelp
The best schnitzel in the world for about 12.50 Euros per person. This place is not like the chic lounges and restaurants you find on the Ring. Bei Oma Kleinmann is old world, with pictures of the real Oma Kleinmann, the former owner, gracing the wall. We, a group of college students and faculty from Clemson University, were well taken care of here. The management was even kind enough to hold our table for us although we were delayed by a half hour in the subway. We came hungry, and we left "satt." Come here for a taste of Old Cologne in a setting filled with students and intellectuals. To the owners, all I can say is ,,Weiter so!"
