Where to Eat in St. Paul’s West Side Neighborhood | Eater Twin Cities

"Open since 1984 this Lebanese restaurant is still family-owned. For the full experience, order mezze, piles of small bites like stuffed grape leaves, luscious baba ghanous followed by hearty mains like kebabs or crusty-spiced slices of gyro meat."

Oh my I’ve been wanting to try here my last 3 trips to the airport, this time I finally could. Such a disappointment, service was slow if any, meal took 30 minutes, appetizer took 35 minutes.. little backwards. The Kafta tastes like ground beef and half a pound of salt. Falafel is burnt and taste like stuffing for Thanksgiving.

This restaurant pairs great service with fantastic food. We've been to so many middle eastern restaurants and this one is near the top, if not the best. We ordered a large sampler dish and got to taste a huge variety of the menu, all of which was delicious! We could hear staff helping another couple who had never tried the food before. They answered our questions, showed us the best baklava to start with, and made us laugh. A rare find! We travel to the airport and couple of times each year and we will be back! PS - always get more garlic sauce to go!

Google
I knew this place was going to be impressive when I thought their baba ganoush was hummus. I ordered a small hummus, a small baba ganoush, and a skewer of shish tawook. Everything was absolutely excellent. I thought the hummus was already creamy perfection but the baba ganoush really stole the show with how unbelievably smooth it was. Both of these dips were delectable, striking just the right balance of nuttiness and tartness. The shish tawook was wonderfully charred and had such tender, flavorful, juicy chicken with well-cooked vegetables. The slices of pickles they included were also great.

I have returned 3 times in 10 days, exceeded my expectations! Great food with a warm family atmosphere. Authentic and fresh delicious dishes, so happy to have found it! I love this place!

The Beirut Restaurant in Romulus, Michigan is a true Middle Eastern gem, specializing in authentic Arabic cuisine that warms the soul—but what really stood out tonight was the service. Juliana was one of the most generous, genuinely sweet people I’ve met in a long time. She guided me through the menu like a seasoned friend and suggested the perfect meal for the evening. I started with a bowl of lamb vegetable soup—and wow. The lamb was incredibly tender, the vegetables were cooked just right, and the broth was savory and rich all the way to the last drop. For my entrée, I had hummus with lamb, sautéed with pine nuts and served over the creamiest hummus I’ve ever had—drizzled with fresh olive oil that tasted like it had just been pressed. I used every last piece of pita to clean the plate. Absolutely delicious. Even though I was full, I couldn’t resist trying their rice pudding—made with whole milk, imported rosewater, and a touch of cinnamon. It was delicate, lightly sweet, and completely satisfying. And yes, I grabbed some baklava to go—crispy, fresh, and among the best I’ve ever tasted. This place is the real deal—cozy, authentic, and full of heart. Thank you to Juliana and the team for an incredible meal and a warm, unforgettable experience. I’ll be back, and next time I’m bringing friends. شكراً جزيلاً

Google
Humus was good, meat pies I couldn't eat, they were heated in microwave so made dough soggy, fattosh salad was good, even though honestly I won't call it fattosh salad. Would I go there again, probably not, Detroit has other better middle eastern options

Google
Easy access from the airport, The lamb and hummis, and garden salad were an excelent meal, the hummis especially tasty. All three of us enjoyed different fresh carrot juice smoothies.

Yelp
Great service and authentic food. We stopped in for dinner and our server was funny, knowledgeable, prompt, and attentive. She recommended a platter for two with a cup of lamb soup which fit the occasion perfectly. Many seats were full but the dining area was not noisy. Even with several tables our server took the time to regularly check on us and serve different options. Servers from other tables would collect finished dishes and such for our table very unobtrusively. The value was great and the food was very authentic. Nothing was overpowering but all of the seasoning was appropriately bold. I cannot recommend this place enough. If you are near the airport stop I for dinner. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Man great place for middle eastern cuisine!! I had the appetizer plate and the mixed shwarma. It was WAY too much food for one person! I had leftovers for breakfast the next day and still didn't finish it. There is seating inside but not a ton - probably 8 booths and 4 tables in the middle?? Very quick service. Kind of abrupt to be honest if you ask me but whatever I can be quite direct when I feel like it and am not always in the mood for chit chat so it's all good. Delicious food more than makes up for it. App platter had baba ganoush and hummus - both were good but baba ganoush was better. Had a nice little spicy kick. Shawarma came with a nice zippy garlic sauce as well.

Yelp
This was by far the best middle eastern food I have ever eaten. Wow! It was that good! Just around the corner from my hotel, I stumbled upon Beirut Restaurant during an overnight stay near the airport. The decor and interior is nothing fancy. No one is going there for the ambiance, and I kind of questioned my decision as I sat down. However, the waitress (I believe the owner) was personable and explained that everything is freshly made, etc. She was serious about the food and it's preparation. She also suggested a few items. I had the hummus with salmon. Sounded a bit odd but it was fantastic! The baba ganoush was perfect- smokey and super creamy. The falafel (served in a salad) was unlike any falafel I've every had. It had a hint of lemon and a unique blend of spices. Yet the best thing I had (at the servers recommendation) was the potato and cauliflower sandwich (a wrap). The "wrap" was a thin pita like dough, crunchy and warm. I'm not sure exactly what was inside other than the cauliflower and potato listed on the menu, but whatever it was set a new bar for all sandwiches I will consume moving forward. What a surprise the Beirut Restaurant was! I'm thinking about booking a flight to Detroit just to go there again ;)

Yelp
We had almost everything on the menu, very full and satisfied. We had to pack food home, and couldn't wait to enjoy the leftover when our stomachs would be empty again. The food here are authentic and made with love. Highly recommend the baba ganoush here, tasty with smooth texture. The baklava tray is amazing. Totally worth it with the Turkish coffee.

Yelp
My go to when getting picked up from the airport and I have a hunger from a day of travel. Their garlic sauce is out of this world! I also really like the mujadra, the portion size is massive and I sub tahini for the yogurt to make it vegan. They do a lot of carry out especially in the evenings it can get hectic, but the servers do their best to be attentive to dine in customers. The walls have murals and they have a tv that plays music videos. Place is clean. Free parking lot, just look out for pot holes.

Yelp
Listen! If you haven't been to this hidden gen in ROMULUS you're missing out on some AWESOME food!!! GENERIUS PORTIONS and I had plenty to eat and take home. Customer service was AMAZING and the ambiance is family friendly. Depending on the time of day (dinner), I'm glad my party of 4 got in when we did. All of a sudden the line was out the door for dine in and carry out. Give them a try if in the area. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I stayed in a hotel nearby and got takeout both nights I was in town. I would love to have a restaurant like this near me. Great salad, chicken shawarma, pitas. Huge servings.
google avatar

Blane C.

Yelp
One bite in and I had to immediately stop and head to yelp. The food is so good and large portions. The chicken shawarma was cooked and seasoned to perfection and don't get me started on the bed of hummus... creamy tasty flavor that I can't get enough of. Paired together with the soft white rice and crunch of the peanut this is definitely something I would recommend to all flight crew I come across on their layover. The salad was also amazing. Not too much dressing and the fresh veggies speak for themselves. I am pleasantly satisfied. Now let's talk about service. I wish I asked for names because everyone was so kind I was greeted with a warm welcome and the person that took our orders were so kind and patient with us sharing his favorite recommendations. Even how everyone interacted with one another was so sweet to watch. I took my food Togo but next time I'll dine in! The ambiance was cozy and felt like home. Definitely a must try!!!

Yelp
Everyone is so very nice. I try stop here every time I visit Detroit. The food is delicious and fresh
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
The food here is amazing, but the service is always slow and rude... today's version included charging whatever price they came up with at will even after showing them the menu advertised price and doing the tax math for them.... Horrible business practices...
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
Wow, what a great find! Just flew into Detroit and needed a good meal. A quick three minute drive will transport you to the best meal. Everything here is super fresh and so well prepared. Its a family place that is run with love and pride. The food is authentic and amazing. I've never had hummus so creamy. And don't get me started on the lamb. So good! This is a very popular place with a steady stream of takeout orders. The place is super clean and the decor is cute and comfortable. I absolutely loved the lady working here when we came. She was like a mom who wanted to be sure everything was running smooth and everyone was comfortable. The rest of the crew seems tight knit and friendly. Thank you for a great experience. We'll be back!

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant for years. It is the best Lebanese restaurant that I have tried. The food amazing. They are friendly and fast. Clean and relaxed atmosphere. I will continue to come here for years to come.

Karen T.

Yelp
This is our second time ordering from them. We ordered 2 party trays for a pre-wedding party. Once again the food was fresh, tasty and authentic. Our guests were impressed with the flavors, variety of selections and the quantity of food. The staff are friendly and helpful. We will continue to highly recommend the restaurant. Even though it is not in our neighborhood, it is worth the drive. Excellent!!

TJ B.

Yelp
I don't normally write reviews, but Juliana was potentially the best waitress we have ever had. This was one of our favorite resteraunts before we met her. Now, without question! Every restaurant needs a Juliana. Delicious food! 5/5 stars!
google avatar

Kai W.

Yelp
I've been coming to this restaurant for probably 10 years. Every time I'm in Detroit I make a point to come here. There's a lot of love put into this food. The Shawarma, the baba ghanoush, the lamb, all delicious with a home cooked taste.
google avatar

Angel T.

Yelp
The Chicken shawarma was SO tender and the hummus was so creamy. The lemon rice soup was amazing!! I really enjoyed my dinner. However, the 3% credit card charge should be transparent on the bill. The gentleman in charge was very accommodating and super nice through it all.
google avatar

Danny S.

Yelp
First the folks who run this wonderful restaurant are extremely helpful and accommodating. Thank you for your recommendations. The food you suggested was some of the best Mediterranean food I've had in a while and I can't wait to return. Chicken wings are my favorite and when you experience the wings at Beirut the way the fine people who work here recommend; with extra sauce over rice, you cannot go wrong.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Hidden gem near the airport. Mama Beirut will take care of you like family. Some of the best hummus and shawarma I've ever had. I will be stopping in anytime I am able, so should you. Don't sleep on this place.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Just ordered the shawarma combo and garlic. Didn't supply any pita with the order. Flavor wasn't my favorite. Went because of the good reviews.
google avatar

Andrew O.

Yelp
This is a great local spot if you're traveling through the area. The food was incredibly fresh, flavorful and all certified Halal if that's within your dietary needs. Mama Beirut (as she's referred to in other posts) is hilarious and runs the store with care and attention to detail. Listen to her recommendations as she helped me pick out a perfect meal. Get the lentil soup!
google avatar

Sophia P.

Yelp
Love this family owned restaurant! Some of the reviews are hit and miss, but I enjoyed it! My food was on point and they had many vegetarian options plus a ton of options for everyone else. The service was a little slow because it was so busy in there with only two people running around getting everyone's food and drinks. It was worth the wait for the food though. The prices are great as well! I bought something to eat in house then ordered something to go for later. It's really that good! I will say depending on what time you go the lines may be out the door to sit down and get a table, but they always do to go orders and are quick. The ambience isn't fancy, but you really are coming to just eat great food then go home. Also they don't sell any beer, wine or liquor so that's just a tip. Overall I'll be back to try this amazing food anytime I'm in DTW!!

Yelp
First time visiting Beirut restaurant. We stay in the area hotels often and decided to give it a try. We all agree that everything was great. Very tasty food, fresh and plenty. They have a variety in the menu. The server was informative on menu items and questions we had. Great ambiance and relaxed setting. Definitely is a come Back place. Thanks Beirut restaurant.

Yelp
This is my 100% go to lunch. Salads are awesome. Turkish coffee is delicious Staff is wonderful

Matt M.

Yelp
Amazing food, over the top generous portions and amazing/friendly service to top it all off. My go to.

Yelp
Their chicken shawarma is great. Salad are good. I would recommend it if you are around DTW.

Yelp
Moved to Michigan so you have to try to local favorite. Got fried kibbeh, toum (garlic sauce), shish tawook sandwich and shish kebab sandwich. Overall fast service. Food 10/10 everything was delicious. Overall we had a great experience with takeout Ps: sorry for the spelling guys

Yelp
Good food & great service I love this place, one of my daughter's fave's as well. Great smoothies, very clean quiet and peaceful

Yelp
I wasn't terribly hungry so I got an appetizer, the hummus with lamb shawarma, to go. It was definitely a sharing appetizer, and I couldn't finish it. The hummus was good, always has been here, and the lamb had good flavor, but unfortunately it was a little dry, and not as tender as I thought it would be. I have eaten here before, and have never been disappointed. The portions are sizable and flavors are heavenly. I'll try something else next time.
google avatar

Trevor B.

Yelp
I ordered the Shish Tawouk with rice and hummus. The chicken was tender and tasty. The toum added just the right amount of garlic flavor to the meal! The rice was also tender and the pine nuts added a nice crunch. The hummus though... it was some of the best I have ever had anywhere. It was SO creamy and smooth. I could eat it with a spoon. The service was prompt and friendly. The place was super busy with walk ins and to-go orders. Sounded like a lot of regulars come here based on the conversation. This is a new go to for me!

Yelp
This is my 2nd review in a week for this place. We stayed in the hotel right beside where Beirut is located. This time, we decided to dine in since the food we had for takeout the night before was very good. When we came in, we were greeted by an elderly woman (whom I assume was like the mama or owner of the restaurant) she told us to seat anywhere we like and she will be with us to take our orders. We told her we ordered the night before and that we would love to have the same. She brought us delicious salad with lots of grated feta cheese for toppings, and a bowl of soup that's sweet and savory and just comforting for the soul. Mama Beirut (as my husband and I called her) was so warm and welcoming and hospitable, she keeps tending to us and asking us if everything was good. We told her this was my birthday dinner and so she told her crew about it and after dinner they brought us a scrumptious complimentary dessert. The baklava was rich but not too sweet, just perfect for dessert after a hearty meal.. and the rice pudding, it is soooo yummy, so creamy and just sweet enough for my liking. From the food, the excellent service and even the very homey ambiance, I'd give this place 10 stars if Yelp would allow me. This is such a hidden gem and we were just very lucky to have stumbled upon it. Thank you Mama Beirut for making our last dinner in Romulus such an unforgettable one!

Henry K.

Yelp
Got a lot of takeout food. I got the mixed shwarma with rice and salad. Absolutely terrific. The hummus and pita absolutely amazing. I sampled the baklava. Absolutely the best I've ever had. Can't wait to get it again!
google avatar

Patti K.

Yelp
So glad I found this spot near my hotel in Romulus. On the night before UMichigan graduation day, we grabbed a seat. We ordered baba ghanouj, and I ordered hummus with galallaba (beef). The baba ghanouj was smooth and tasty, with a hint of smoke. The hummus galallaba was hearty with well-seasoned vegetables. I also enjoyed the fattouch side salad with crisp pita bread. The service was courteous and prompt. The television provided background music, but it was not too noisy for conversation. My one disappointment was that the table was not well cleaned before being set. I found a rag to wipe it, but missed an olive oil blot that soaked into my gift. My friend said that's pretty normal for Middle Eastern restaurants in the area, so I take the stain as another souvenir of a very tasty evening. If I find myself in the area again I would go back.
google avatar

Dilan N.

Yelp
Overall, the food is tasty. I got the falafel, orange carrot juice, fries and baklava. The garlic sauce makes everything taste good. The falafel was filling, tasty, and fresh. However, I would skip on the baklava since it didn't taste fresh. Overall I found a go to place for falafel.

Kathleen T.

Yelp
After nearly most return flights from DTW, we almost always stop here for a meal or order to go. Staff is polite and service with food excellent. Very traditional, this middle eastern restaurant is one of my favorites. I love ordering their fresh juices as well.
google avatar

Myra C.

Yelp
Hotel staff recommended Beirut. Yelp reviews were great so I ordered take out. The portions are huge. The mixed shawarma entree was enough for three people. The meat beef/chicken were a bit on the dry side for my liking. Coated with the garlic sauce it's much better. The house salad was the best, especially with the dressing and feta cheese. Baba ghanoush was very smooth with good flavor. May have been better if I dined in because the food just warm. Overall, great. Four stars.
google avatar

Brenna M.

Yelp
Great for air travelers, Beruit Restaurant, is conveniently located close to DTW. After flying in from out of state, we ordered three meals and all three were wholesome and delicious. And the young woman running the restaurant the evening we visited was warmly delightful. We left the restaurant with smiles--well fed and well prepared to enjoy the rest of our long journey to visit family in Michigan, "Up North."

Eric Y.

Yelp
Great food and large portions. I don't typically struggle to finish what I'm served, but I couldn't do it. The humus is the best I've had!
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
The best Mediterranean style food you could have. This place is a must have in the metro area
google avatar

Lizzy G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Stopped here after flying into DTW. The food is completely fresh and tasted amazing. Our server was attentive and helpful. We ordered way too much and it lasted us lunch and dinner. Highly recommend! I loved the chicken, rice and veggies and hummus with veggies. So good.
google avatar

Yelp
If you've been to Beirut than you know! Walking in, it seems like any other dinner but with a Mediterranean feel but the owners are amazing with great energy and even better food. I've tried so many things on the menu, it's usually gone before I can take a picture. The Hummus, veggie platters, shawarmas, grape leaves, lamb, Mediterranean wings are the perfect blend of lime and garlic! What every you choose don't forget to get a bit of the garlic sauce.... Life changer!

Hadyn M.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing in EVERY way. The Shawarma is tender, flavorful, just absolutely perfect on top of the GENEROUS portions. I am traveling for work and I came in an hour before close not knowing they weren't seating anymore. After finding out, I decided to just do takeout until a kind soul told me to go ahead and take a seat and she will personally serve me (all staff was already packing up and cleaning). I could tell the family didn't want anyone else served at the tables however this amazing young women spoke up, took it upon herself, and made sure I was taken care of. Even told me to take my time eating and to "please, not rush" after I offered to pay immediately after receiving my food so I could get out their hair sooner. She made me feel welcomed. We are all human, and simple, small gestures of kindness like this go a long way. The word "Sonder", always speaks out to me, meaning " the feeling one has on realizing that every other individual one sees has a life as full and real as one's own, in which they are the central character and others, including oneself, have secondary or insignificant roles: In a state of sonder, each of us is at once a hero, a supporting cast member, and an extra in overlapping stories." In my story, I am over a thousand miles away from home, having to work 70 hour weeks to get out of debt in hopes of accomplishing my dreams. This meal to them was another person coming in late, buying another plate of food, the kind soul didn't even realize, to me, this was the highlight of my long, and hard day at work, this brought peace and serenity, this allowed me to breathe for a bit and make me feel like I'm not so alone.

Chi A.

Yelp
Excellent middle eastern . Very flavorful. Good portions Shawarma one of the best of the best.
google avatar

Deon A.

Yelp
Visiting from Florida and it was nice to have fresh cook food right by the airport that was not a fast food chain. The food and customer service is top notch.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
The Beirut Restaurant is a quaint, apparently family owned restaurant beloved by local residents. I base this on the many high star reviews and my observations while placing and waiting for my takeaway order. The staff was very attentive and efficient. I ordered ( for lunch) the dinner Classic Gallaya with lamb. As you can see from the picture, this is quite the masterpiece that I will enjoy for lunch, dinner, and probably a midnight snack. Most notable was the salad... what a delight. The main dish vegetables, sauce, and rice were perfect. The only reason I rated 4 out of 5 is that the lamb was very tough and overcooked. I recommend trying the chicken or ground lamb for this entree.
google avatar

Michael O.

Yelp
Food used to better. Seems like it's always dirty in there now. I've gotten the wrong thing the last 3 times I placed takeout and to boot my Shish kofta was raw. Used to be my favorite stop when flying out of Dtw but not anymore

Gerri C.

Yelp
Great place when you are near the airport. Will always be our go to spot when we visit MI! Best hummus we have ever had, also had the mixed shawarma which was incredibly good!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Located in a strip mall. Staff is friendly, place is clean. I've been here twice and both my guest and myself have had great food!
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
I stopped in here while staying nearby for business. Christmas Eve, and a place open? Great. I was warmly greeted when I walked in. There's a decent sized seating area, but I wanted to get food to go. I ordered 6 felafel, and a sandwich. Suddenly in the middle of the day swarms of people showed up picking up their orders or waiting to order. The employees clearly were surprised. I waited a good 20 minutes or more for my order to be ready. Star knocked off for that. It was a bit excessive. The food was amazing. Very flavorful and fresh. Included in my order was some pitas and delicious garlic sauce. Really good. I'd not hesitate to return if given the opportunity. Just will expect to wait longer for my food.

Michael Y.

Yelp
This is one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I've been to. The food is all homemade and fresh and healthy. Their lentil soup is hearty and their char broiled chicken is out of this world. Any dish you order will not disappoint you. I will make sure to visit this place every time I visit Detroit.
