The 38 Best Restaurants in Calgary, Canada | Eater

"Lebanese food is widely available in Calgary, but few restaurants are as enticing as Beirut Street Food. Tucked away in a very unassuming location on the dividing line between an industrial area and residential neighborhood, this wonderful fast-casual eatery woos diners with (mostly) made-to-order pita, which you can watch cooks prepare through the window. It’s rare to find a menu where everything is delicious, but there isn’t a dud among the appropriately messy shawarma wraps stuffed full with coal-roasted chicken or beef (or falafel), pickled cabbage, pickles, hot peppers, and — dear God — that heavenly sweet sauce. The donair (doner) or shawarma-topped poutines are Canadian-Lebanese fusion at its best. [$]" - Dan Clapson

Google
My absolute favourite shawarma. Super fresh to say the least. All made with love, you can tell when you walk in there. It’s one of a kind and if you love that cuisine it’s highly recommended. All the staff are super friendly and amazing personality. Never disappoints when I’m there for either a platter or wrap 😋

Google
Everything was excellent at this place, we had the beef, falafel and the chicken wraps, and I would rate the taste in that same order. Beef was excellent, the freshly made bread is an excellent touch. Service was excellent, even though miscommunication lead to making the wrong sandwich, they still had no issue making us a new one without a charge and everyone was super friendly. Prices are at par with similar venues, place was fairly clean, well decorated and had lots of free parking available.

We ordered from Beirut Street Food for a team event with around 40 people, and the entire experience was fantastic from start to finish. The communication and service were excellent – very responsive, professional, and accommodating to our needs. The food arrived right on time, and everything was packaged perfectly for a large group. The portions were incredibly generous – we ended up with so much left over, which was a nice surprise! Everyone was raving about the flavors and quality. Highly recommended for catering large events – we’ll definitely be ordering again!

Google
Great food here for your lunch time break or to takeaway with you. They’re using classic charcoal spits for the meat rotary, lots of really good layered flavours in the dishes they offer (such as shawarma wraps and platters)!

Google
First time visiting Beirut Street Food. I had heard amazing reviews by friends and family but had never been here myself! :)…until this week! Let me tell you, I was SOOOOO thrilled to taste their beef shawarma. DELICIOUS. DELICIOUS. DELICIOUS 🤤. In my regular size shawarma, I asked for hummus and garlic sauce to start, all the veggies and to top it off, I chose the spicy and tahini sauces. SOO GOOD!! The beef was soft, well seasoned. I received their mini baklava on the house! Very grateful for their generosity and their own gratitude for choosing their restaurant for a meal. Very thankful people. I also bought their falafel. BEST FALAFEL IN TOWN, hands down! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. If you live in Calgary or at just visiting and want to try something new or a change to your regular meal, I highly recommend this restaurant! Very clean place. Courteous people and very generous!

Google
This is hands down the best Lebanese food in all of Calgary. I've been going here for years, and it's a real testament to the business that both the staff and the quality haven't changed in all this time. The staff always seem happy and are fun to banter with. The food is extremely consistent and always absolutely top notch. If you come during the lunch hour be prepared for a short wait, as this place attracts a decent number of regulars who also know what's up. I'm not a big fan of poutine, but theirs is amazing!

Google
First of all, you walk in and you get smacked in the face with the smell of the meat being roasted on charcoal. Yes, charcoal. Then there's the service. Quick and efficient. Family run. Not only did I get an amazing donair, I got a likkle paper bag to hold the drippings. Washroom is clean. There's nothing else I could ask for. Certified.

Google
Holy smokes. This is AMAZING food. If you're unsure JUST DO IT. I would move to Calgary to eat here once a month LOL.

Yelp
Came here after we landed in Calgary and this place did not disappoint. Quick, easy, and super friendly. I will say, this place has one of the best falafels I've ever had.

Yelp
My husband and I chowed down on BSF's Donair and Swarma. Although they were "regular size" - they were actually quite substantial! Be prepared to have enough for an extra snack. I am chowing down on the remainder while I write this! The meats are fresh, favourable, and a good quality as are the sides. I didn't try the tabouli or humus which is also available for taking home. The cookies with carmel chips also yummy and available to take home. The interior is modern and very clean. My food was take out, but I'd be happy to sit inside. This owner works hard and you can tell she cares about her food. I recommend Beirut Street Food to anyone. You will enjoy it! I wish she had one in Airdrie...

Yelp
Serious eaters only -- this isn't bland, tasteless boring food people. And the portions are man sized. Spicy, complex, tasty and fabulous! The platters are fantastic (you can split them between 2 people). The donair poutine is the only one of its kind -- don't leave without trying it. If you don't like garlic and charcoal smoked meat -- don't bother coming. It's mouthwatering and delicious. Get all the toppings and buckle up -- it's intense and a culinary adventure.

Yelp
Best donair in Calgary! Friendly staff who take pride in food. Party was very pleased with our meal

Yelp
Wish this was in Toronto! If you're in Calgary, this is a must. Service: 5/5, very helpful and friendly Atmosphere: casual with space to dine in Food: 5/5 - ordered chicken and beef platter with tabouleh salad. Perfectly seasoned chicken and deep charcoal smokiness on the beef takes it to a whole new level. Tabouleh was a bit heavy on the acidity but still good. Fries were A+ with the seasoning as well.

Yelp
Winner! My favourite place in Calgary for a shawarma! This place is different from all the rest. The pita is made fresh, right before you eat it. Because the pita is grilled after it is assembled, the bread is both chewy and crispy. Eating a shawarma with a freshly made pita makes a world of difference. I ordered a beef shawarma but it turned out to be chicken. Doesn't matter - I like chicken too. Both meats are cooked over charcoal. You could see the juices splatter and spit over all the coals. The toppings are five stars! What a selection! Everything was fresh and nicely minced or chopped. Vegetables were bright in colour and each had its distinct flavour, unlike some places where all the vegetables seem to taste like each other. The portion was large and even though my wrap was dripping with the sauces (hummus and tahini), I felt it was healthy. The female owner is very nice and you can tell she cares about the quality of food that goes out. Pretty busy place. Lots of families and couples coming in for lunch. Next time I will get a platter with the sauce on the side, so I can taste the meat on its own.

Yelp
I came to Beirut based on the ratings of their Donair. It took me a but to find the place (directionally challenged). But I really wanted a Donair. For me, it's a great meal with everything I need for a good healthier food choice. Meat, vegetables, and breads. First thing I was super impressed with was the cleanliness. 10+ out of 10 stars in my book for cleanliness. Wow. Second thing I had see was two ladies hand making fresh pitas. (Only one lady in my picture). When I received my Donair, it was huge and quite loaded. The pita surrounding it's contents could not even close. Everything is made fresh right before your eyes. My Donair tasted wonderful. With the perfect meat and bountiful vegetables, it became an outstanding choice. Thank you very much for such a fantastic meal. I look forward to coming again.

Yelp
If you haven't figured it out from the name, this place has Lebanese food (shwarma, falafel ect.). I've heard it's the only place in Calgary to slow roast their meats over charcoal... and the result is delicious! The space is simple, clean and open with a few tables so eating in is comfortable. They have a fridge of drinks and you order, pay, and collect at the front. The grilling meat is visible through glass, which is great on a hot day since you're protected from the heat of the coals. The staff are very friendly (it seems to be a family run business) and the portions are large. I ordered a chicken shwarma since they also make their own pita. Garlic, hummus, tomato, banana peppers, pickles, lettuce, pickled cabbage, parsley... I even added olives coz I love them! They wrap it, grill it in a panini press, and then add the tzatziki and hot sauce. For a regular size, it was very large... I didn't think I'd be able to finish.... but I did coz it rocked The chicken was juicy and very well spiced - the charcoal added a great flavour. The other thing that made it so good was the home made pita which made such a huge difference to the texture of a bite! Along with all the other sauces and veggies, I had no problems finishing it off. I was so full after I thought.... how am I going to be productive this afternoon??? But once I digested a bit, I didn't feel sluggish at all.... I think perhaps because it really wasn't greasy like I find it is at a lot of other places. 11 something after tax for a regular size. They also have poutines, platters and salads if you're not feeling the shwarma. Definitely recommended!

Yelp
When you go on their website, you see a beautiful mix of color. While most places you can just roll your eyes and be like "bro, I know that's fake"- here it's not. IT TASTES AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS. Call ahead for lunchtime to avoid the line up. 5/5 every time I go there.

Yelp
100% legit. You will not be disappointed when you eat here! Everything is delicious. Home made bread. Chicken and beef slowly grilled over coals. Donair recipe is made from scratch. The MIDDLE EAST beast is my favourite dish. Shawarma poutine..sooo good. Congrats on getting it right guys!

Yelp
We've been such loyal customers for so many years. And lately we've noticed they barely put any chicken or rice in the plates. It's already overpriced in the first place but now they're not even putting in the right portions.
google avatar

Kimberley J.

Yelp
Wow wow wow. Fresh made pitas are on the grill as you come in the door and are made daily. The coal grills have the meats spinning and your mouth will start water. Possible the best shawarma I have ever had. Great selections of desserts to accompany a stellar menu. A little off on a side road, worth the detour.
google avatar

Cathy S.

Yelp
Shawarmas are the only fast food that I eat so I am also on the lookout for the very best - and we hit paydirt! The homemade pita is fabulous. It provides a little more body to the shawarma than the store-bought variety plus it just tastes better. The chicken had the right degree of spice with a nice grilled flavour thanks to their charcoal grilling, while retaining all of its moisture. They also don't skimp on the hummus, vegetables and homemade sauces so you end up with a shawarma the size of a log! I love patronizing shops that really make the effort to provide the very best for their customers and Beirut Street Food does that in spades.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic little place hidden away in Fairview Calgary! Amazing friendly staff always greet you with a big smile when you come in the door ! They make their own fresh pita bread on site that is so very good. The salads are fresh and filling the chicken shawarma sandwich is one of the best I have tried in Calgary and the people I was with said the garlic fries were awesome! The only complaint I would have is they don't have a location closer to my neighbourhood!
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
Ordered a donair wrap and chicken platter. Both were generous portions and it was quick to order. The pita wrap is soft and chewy and was the best wrap to hold in the large portion of meat and fresh veggies. My favorite was the chicken platter. I find most places make you choose between a salad and fries but this place gives it all to you! Salad, seasoned fries, rice, pita wrap with hummus and garlic sauce. All the sides though don't drown out the star of the dish which was the chicken, the skin is crispy and has that smoky flavour from the charcoal. Convenient for me that this place is only a 2 mins drive away. Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Decided to try Beirut after reading many reviews on it, and can only conclude that it's close to the top of the shawarma houses in the city. Most certainly I'm sick of being hyped up by high-level reviews and then being disappointed over and over again... But at Beirut, it's different. Not only is the older woman 'Momma' at the front busy making fresh pitas, but upon talking to the servers, I was told that the owner tries to make the very best street food she can. As seems true of back home, she's therefore very exacting in the ingredients and combinations. Other patrons said that they repeatedly come here for their pockets and full platters, which are, by the way, all large portions even when one asks for the small size. Instead of roasting over a heat element or gas flame, just as back home they use charcoal to create a steady glowing flamey heat. The beef shawarma. Fairly juicy morsels of beef mixed with hummus and all the other ingredients made for a best experience. The pocket was obviously fresh even though not right off the hot plate. The aftertaste that lasted for about 2 hours was certainly good. The chicken and beef shawarma platter ($16). Returned and walked out really stuffed. Dollops of hummus and mixed salad, pita chips and crispy chunks of chicken and beef greeted me that with the spiced hot sauce and fresh pita bread was very good. Although not my favorite ethnic food, only Ali Baba on 14th Street and Queen Donair in Edmonton exceeds the flavours here. If return, will try the donaire to see if it stacks up with others I've had. If a first time goer, I suggest making the trip. If not, then your returning footsteps will also tell the story...

Yelp
My search for the most unique and tasty shawarma is finally over. Here at Beirut Street Food, they serve a shawarma made with fresh ingredient, fresh bread, and meat from a horizontal spit cooked with charcoal. Arriving here for dinner was totally unexpected. I was hungry for shawarma and I found out that this restaurant was near my workplace. So once I'm off work. I drove to Beirut Street Food hoping to grab a to-go order and head to the gym. Once I step inside. First thing I can smell was meat roasted using charcoal. Seriously? And importantly, it's on a horizontal spit. This is the first time seeing it live other than on TV food show. I ordered a mixed shawarma and owner Ramzal was very nice, friendly and generous. I have changed my mind and order for to-stay. I have to take a bite right away! Now, let's get started with the food. I took my first bite of the shawarma, and WOW! Not only the flavour is there, but what makes it unique is the way they cook the meat in charcoal fire. It gives a distinct caramel and charred flavour to the meat. Also, the pita bread is made in-house. The softness of the pita bread and the freshness of the ingredients. It all goes perfect match! I also have a side of tabouli salad which is very simple, yet flavourful! A hint of lemon, the sweetness from the tomato and onion, and the parsley. All mixed together with a bit of olive oil. How healthy can it get?! I really thank you for the surprise dinner. You made my day and I will for sure return for more fantastic foods. Specifically the Kanafi, which was sold out at the time I was there. THANK YOU!

Mandy G.

Yelp
Phenomenal food. My husband and I shared a chicken shawarma and a beef shawarma. Both were delicious. The staff is always very pleasant and the food is incredible.

Yelp
Is there a word that's better the awesome? Well if it exists this place is definitely that. Marinated slow roasted over charcoal chicken and beef that is mind blowing. I had the mixed platter (chicken & beef) and I was amazed. Food was flavor packed and the portion was HUGE. Price was more then fair for the quality, and the staff (I assume the owners) were friendly and helpful. My wife and I both had platters and a few iced tea's and with a tip it was just under $40.00. Can't beat that. I highly recommend this place. Its spotless from top to bottom and you can really see the owners take pride in the art.

Lynne F.

Yelp
My first time eating lunch there today and all my wife and I could say between bites was wow, Incredible, tasty, fresh etc! We will never go anywhere else. Inviting and friendly staff, extremely clean establishment. We will be back!!! Thank you for the great lunch today!
google avatar

Yelp
Just tried it today. Their Shawarma is a Refined version of other options in YYC. The fresh pita is the best touch. To be honest, with garlic sauce and veg and tahini and cheese I found it hard to taste the effect of the charcoal on the shawarma beef. Would have rated it 5 if the large price of $14 was large-and-in-charge like some other establishments. It was filling nonetheless. The Baklava is PERFECT. Made in house? Probably. Not too gooey or sweet. If I lived in the area this place would be my go-to.

Kerri B.

Yelp
This is a GREAT place for lunch or dinner and take out is fast and fabulous. The staff are as pleasant and amazing as the food. Just an all around great experience. if you haven't been here you really should take a trip. Love love love the food and my daughter goes crazy for the FATOUSH SALAD.

Yelp
The best Lebanese food in Calgary, without a doubt. Everything is made in-house -- EVERYTHING. The pitas are made fresh. The meat is grilled over charcoal, right there in front of your eyes. The sauces are housemade (and you can buy extra containers of them to take home, which you will want to do because they are awesome). I have no idea what they do to make their french fries like that, but whatever it is, it's genius. The service is super friendly and you can tell they really care that you get a great meal. The place is spotlessly clean. Okay, now I need to talk to you about something specific: the shawarma poutine. You might be thinking "Whatever, that's not authentic, I'm not getting it." Shhhhhhhh. Shut up. Just get it. You're welcome.

Peter S.

Yelp
Went with the family. We tried one of everything. Everything was fresh, hot, and super tasty. Service was excellent and the Kids loved to watch the fresh pitas being made. Loved the option of regular and Lebanese pickles. So good. If there was one complaint...for both the shawarmas and donairs they offer 2 sizes (regular $11 / large $13). The portion sizes are awesome, but perhaps a bit too big for the kids. Of course I could have ordered one large and had the kids split it...but the kids have their own likes when it comes to toppings. If there was an option for a smaller $9 version for the kids and those just wanting a lighter snack then all bases would be covered. Other than that, great overall experience.

Brandi E.

Yelp
I had read some great things about this place but was very disappointed. Food was really not that good, expensive for what you get and service was brutal. Should have went to Riverbend
google avatar

Vin D.

Yelp
Was ok. Chicken was nice, beef was dry. I'll check it out another day to confirm these observations.
google avatar

Kate G.

Yelp
This clean and friendly establishment serves very fresh, homemade Lebanese food. Fresh pita is made in-house and beef and chicken is cooked over charcoal! The staff was so friendly and the food was exceptional! Located just a couple minutes off Macleod, this gem is worth a visit!
google avatar

Bryan D.

Yelp
Stop what you are doing. Drive to Beirut. Get the Beef Shawarma Poutine. You're welcome.
google avatar

Yelp
Best shawarma since the UK. Incredible food. Seriously must try if you are in Calgary
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Such a nice change in comparison to the usual slightly warm, slightly fresh donair places in the area. The meat is made fresh and seasoned well, they roast it over coal and you can see that when you walk in. Homemade toppings and sauces really makes the difference. I will be back for sure!

Margot L.

Yelp
Not your typical donair shop.. this place is a local gem. Ordered the chicken shawarma and beef platter. Both were delicious, fresh, and a generous portion. The pita was the best we have had - made fresh in house! Fatoush salad was also very tasty and all the veggies were so fresh. The seasoning and sauce on the fries were also unique and delicious. The owner was very sweet. Definitely will be back when we come back to Calgary.

Berto L.

Yelp
Theres a lot of Shwarma/Donar in this city. Some good, some bad, some we crutch due to their proximty to our house because everyones guilty of being lazy sometimes. Some places are worth going out of your way for, and Beruit Street Food is one of those exceptional places. Hands down the best falafel platter in the city. 9 outta 10 vegetarians agree. Damn good donairs. What seals the deal for us to go out of our way and drive pretty far south is the fresh home made Pita bread. Its the cherry on top. Warm and fresh pita blanket with all the deliciousness rolled up tight. Due to our present covid lockdown I beleive its take out only. Be warned though if you take a bite the moment you get back into your car you're not going anywhere. You'll end up sitting there in your parking spot hogging down on what you just ordered. Otherwise you'll have to pull over a few blocks up the street and finish what you started. Its that good. Support this place its one of a kind!!

Carl P.

Yelp
Best falafel in town. Used to be the Falafel King on 8th which is a close second! Location is good lots of free parking. The establishment is clean modern and the service friendly.

Yelp
Super nice people own this Mecca for Middle East in the SE, service was awesome. Great Fatoush with added sharma, nice fresh pitas. Sharma Poutine was a nice touch. All toppings & sauces for wraps were fresh & flavourful. Desserts were awesome. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
Excellent food and premium service. Owners are lovely and take the time to explain you in case is yiur first time

Yelp
Went to Beirut Street Food this week for lunch with my regular group. We do prefer a restaurant with table service, however thought we would give it a try. Being brand new to this café we really didn't know what to expect. It's very cool that you can watch a lady making pita's and watch beef and chicken roast on spits. But it is very noisy. So when you're ordering it's very difficult to hear the nice girls behind the counter. They were all very pleasant and got us through it. We all order different variations of salads and I have to say, all we delicious!! Can not complain about the food. Would recommend it for the food alone. But because it is so noisy, you may want to do take-out and go to a park and enjoy the food in a quieter location.

Shafiq J.

Yelp
The portion sizes are pretty generous, but then I did have a wrap. Donair Poutine sounds it might be my next meal here.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Had dinner here yesterday. Excellent shawarma! The meats are cooked over open charcoal flames which adds a delicious flavour to the meat. The young lady serving us was very helpful and did an excellent job preparing our food. Will definitely be back!

Shaz J.

Yelp
Great food and clean place. Salad was very fresh. Shawarma and Falafal were delicious!!

Colleen C.

Yelp
Eat here you won't be disappointed! Homemade fresh Everything, including the pita. I wished I lived in Calgary so I could go more often.

Carah B.

Yelp
One meal was good, second gave me food poisoning. Staff was friendly and place was nice however I wouldn't risk going back. My husband has been a few times with out me but it also isn't his favourite.

Ramzi J.

Yelp
I ordered a regular beef & chicken mix, my girlfriend ordered the falafel platter. They were both very delicious and generous sized portions. I am 100% going back.

Aatif B.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! A unique take on middle eastern cuisine that isn't just your average shawarma spot. Had the shawarma poutine and a chicken plate. The fries were awesome and food tasted great!

Vic G.

Yelp
Seriously... this place is absolutely amazing!! The food is fresh and delicious and the Family (?) who run it are super friendly and aim to please with big, honest smiles. You can feel their great pride in their menu and their establishment (as it's always sparkling clean). I believe you can always tell how good an ethnic restaurant is by how many people of that ethnicity eat there. My wife & I have been there 3 times now and every time (different times of day too) there are Middle Eastern people coming in. The Falafel Poutine is truly to die for and my wife loves the Tabouleh! I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone! Mmmmm...
