Yelp
Bel gatto took over the spot that housed the longtime Original Bakery. Thanks to fellow Yelp Elite & IGer, Jennifer H for compelling earlier posts.
I decided to head out to Bel gatto mid afternoon after a prior stop in the UDistrict from Shoreline (10/23/24). Thankfully, I-5 South to the West Seattle Freeway, then out to Fauntleroy wasn't so bad. This destination is located past and slightly up the hill from the ferry terminal to Vashon Island.
I was able to find nearby street parking. I was amazed to see a large orange Hobart mixer used as a sidewalk planter. I'm assuming it was beyond repair. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted and paused to gaze at the pastry case and overhead menu.
I decided to have onsite a large mocha (Caffe Ladro beans), a Salumi Sandwich, and a pistachio orange bombolone.
The interior was very clean, pleasant, and full of natural light. I enjoyed the Hobart mixer out front, but there was also an antique stove/oven used as side table to get napkins, flatware, sugar, and cream. I liked the lighting, plants, and bright wall art. Various seating available for small or larger groups via tables or counter. Folks were either reading, on a laptop, or having convos.
The mocha ($6) was spot on flavor and temperature wise.
That Salumi sandwich ($14) was sizable. The provided knife allowed it to be sliced to take manageable bites. It was nicely crafted and full of fresh ingredients such as capicola, salami, prosciutto, provolone, rosemary aioli, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. A very nice touch was that the focaccia roll was warmed.
But the big surprise was the pistachio orange bombolone ($4.25) at the end.
Very unassuming, but with that first bite. Wow, fresh and pillowy dough with generous, luscious pastry cream!
At the end, it was truly a satisfying meal! I thought briefly of buying other remaining bombolone that remained in the pastry case - it was that amazing.
However, I plan to return since I also saw Italian cookies, cornetti, pizza, and cannoli.
Open daily 8am to 3pm. Definitely a worthy visit if in the West Seattle/Fauntleroy neighborhood!
