The Next Country You Visit for Whisky? Australia

"It doesn’t get more paddock-to-bottle than this—fourth-generation farmer Peter Bignell built his own biofuel-powered still and grows the grain for his 100 percent rye whisky."

During our recent trip to Tasmania, we were lucky enough to visit Peter at Belgrove Distillery. The tour was absolutely fascinating, and it was great to learn about the whole process from start to finish. What really impressed us was the care and effort that goes into making such a high-quality product, along with the ingenious ways Peter reduces waste and reuses everything. It’s clear he’s always thinking about how to do things better and with less impact on the environment. The tasting afterwards was a real treat with a wide range of unique flavours; there’s something for everyone.

We absolutely loved visiting Belgrove Distillery. Peter gave us an extensive tour and tasting. I can honestly say that the whiskeys we tried were world class. We tried all the smokey varieties and OMG, what an experience. I could taste a bushfire all day and night. So tasty. If you like whiskies/Bourbon this place is an absolute treasure.

This was probably the most informative tour I’ve ever experienced. I loved Belgrove’s commitment to keeping things local, sustainable, and focused on producing exceptional whiskey. Their unique approach and passion for quality truly stood out. Belgrove doesn’t just craft award-winning whiskey—they have world-class employees who genuinely love what they do. How did I discover this gem? The Pooseum! They even have a sheep-poo whiskey. Go check it out and see for yourself!

Peter and his small team operate one of my favourite distilleries in all of Tasmania, and given the sheer number and quality of them that's saying something. Peter is a prolific experimenter, developing new tastes and experiences at every turn - and all of them delicious. If you're in the area don't miss the opportunity to pop in and meet Peter personally. He'll take you on a super tour of his distillery and you'll come out the other end armed with far more knowledge about the process of making top-flight whisky than you went in with. His whisky is distinctive, and once you have a taste for it you'll be using it as a benchmark to judge others by. Brilliant fun and a great experience.

We had an awesome trip down to Tasmania, was lucky enough to visit Peter Bignell and the Belgrove Distillery Peter is a champion of a bloke. Love how innovative he is, he has a wealth of knowledge and combines it with skill to produce some great whiskies. Was awesome to tour the distillery and see each part of the process, including the fields where the grain is produced and harvested. Enjoyed a great tasting at the end of the tour and looking forward to what Belgrove will produce in the future. We highly recommend a visit to Belgrove if visiting Tassie.

Great to finally meet you Peter! Thank you so much for taking some time out of your busy busy day to show us around your magic lab and the distillery. Every whisky lover needs to come meet Peter and his beautiful Rye! Whisky, Brandy, Liqueurs and “special” concoctions, Peter produces them all. The worlds only bio-diesel fuelled distillery with hand made stills, recycled commercial clothes dryer malt tumbler and own paddock grown rye. A true paddock to bottle experience. Peter is a nice bloke, knowledgeable, personable, a genius, but very busy. So please call ahead before popping in for a tasting and tour. You will not regret it!
