How To Spend A Long Weekend in Maine

"A stop for picnic fare to round out provisions for a picnic along the way." - Sophie Friedman

Google
This is a decent quick stop if you are traveling with your RV. There is plenty of room to pull your rig in off to the right back side of the building. And they have Wifi which is important in this area of Maine, with limited cellular service (especially if you are hopping between campgrounds) - see pic Food: Large menu with many choices of salads and sandwiches. They also had quite a few soups to choose from. We got the cup of soup and half sandwich option. We both had tuna sandwiches. I had a chicken and rice Thai curry soup (non-dairy) which was decent, creamy and thick and just a bit spicy. My husband had the clam chowder which he says was good. The tuna sandwiches were big and had a lot of tuna, without it was somewhat bland. Taste wise, the food was decent for what it was, kind of what you'd get from a cracker barrel, but nothing to write home about. For $13 you get big portions. But the food is expensive here. Atmosphere: Seems to be a senior citizen hangout, not sure why, but it reminds me a little of those "cafeteria" style places. You order at the register counter, they give you a number for your table, and they bring out your food. B there is a nice large patio with outdoor seating which is dog friendly. One particular negative is that the bathrooms were kind of gross and dirty. These were unisex individual bathrooms. The floor around the toilet in my room wet, like someone had missed the toilet, the seat was up and had to be wiped. Maybe it was the unisex issue (maybe men are more sloppy than women?). Anyways yuck, I told the staff.

Google
Food was delicious, the takeout process was very easy, and quick friendly service :) I got a turkey bacon melt and added avocado, home fries, and peach dreams smoothie with OJ base.

Google
The new location is much larger which is good because they are still busy. We were there on a cold rainy day and disappointed they were out of soup early. But what we ordered and the cookies was great.

Google
This place is amazing! We were tired on our way to Acadia. And we had two raspberry pillows, a piece of leman cake, and two cups of black tea. ( hot) We really enjoy this place. They have special Monday burger night on some Mondays! Be sure to call advance to check it out. Nice place! Everything is sparkling and clean. Flowers ( in a nice vase) on the table are very special and make you smile. The lady in the house are extremely friendly. Her name is Kitty. ( I hope I spelled it correctly.) Our server Georgian are so sweet and nice too.

Google
They had a variety of items, choices of dairy free and gluten free, the place is so pretty and the service is very good they really take the time to offer different kinds of way to make your meal even better.

Google
This place is phenomenal. Fully customizable breakfast sandwiches, house made biscuits, amazing smoothies, delicious coffees and cinnamon rolls that are like puff pastry and a cinnamon roll had a baby. 10/10 recommend.

Google
Amazing, off the beaten path of Rt 1 in Belfast breakfast and lunch restaurant. The staff was super friendly and helpful. There is plenty of indoor seating with a great atmosphere in the winter. There is outdoor seating when the season is right. The food was extremely tasty and quickly came to our table after we ordered at the front. If you would rather have take away order, they have that option as well. Just come in and go to the left. Kid friendly. Lots of parking.

Richard F.

Google
Good food, uneven delivery of items, which I think was our fault. We ordered at the counter and the kitchen might not have known we were all together. Avocado toast came out right away, breakfast burrito came 10+ minutes later. Weird,.but likely could have been avoided has we known there always server / table ordering too. New, super clean family place. Nice people! Good red flannel hash!

Yelp
Brand new space outside of downtown Belfast. White tile, huge windows, plenty of space and parking. Staff really trying hard. Checked on us often though not table service. Burger and 2x sandwiches were both great. Russian tea.cake was a little large and dry. Mint chip milk shake was great. Clean bathrooms.

Yelp
What time was it today? It was time for breakfast again at BTC!! Haven't been up in a while but as always- good - and then some! Eggs Benny, Sausage and gravy, a couple of mmmmisoas and a hot chocolate...and of course cookies to go!! Service great, and as expected busy busy!!

Yelp
We came on a Wednesday morning on our way into Portland. It was much classier and much more spacious than we expected! The space was beautiful and clean. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. Menu is full of so many options!!! I opted for the avocado toast and added an egg. My boyfriend got the salmon & eggs Benedict. Avocado toast + egg - it was okay. The avocado was much more smashed than I desired. Chunkier could give it more texture. It could've used a bit more flavor as well. salmon and eggs Benedict - it was great! My boyfriend said it was very flavorful and very well done! He would definitely get again! We sat outside and it was a beautiful day! We will definitely come back next time we road trip to Portland!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our smoothies and baked goods The dining area looks out onto an unexpected woodland scene. The curried chicken salad sandwich was delicious and available before lunchtime

Yelp
Hash in the Pan Locally-owned breakfast spot that's been in operation since 1994. It's gone thru multiple iterations over the years, as it started out as pastry and Italian soda joint, to now being a full-service breakfast and lunch spot. They also just recently moved down the street into these larger, more open digs. The Good: *Order at the counter and they bring it out to you. *Self-serve brewed coffee *Friendly service *Large private lot *Iced Mocha was tasty and had good flavor without being overly sweet. *Croissants are a carb option with your breakfast! No upcharge *Be sure to ask for the homemade jam *First time trying Red Flannel Hash, which evidently is a Maine staple. Essentially it is corned beef hash but with cooked beets and it was really tasty. The earthy sweetness of beets married well to the salty, beefy hash and when combined with the vevety runny egg yolks it made for a hearty and tasty breakfast. The Meh: *Menu is huge, which I'm not a fan of, but if you like variety they've got you covered. Conclusion: Nice spot for a hearty meal and a friendly smile while visiting Belfast.

Yelp
This place was packed with people, which is always a good sign. The line to order was quick and the selection was very good. My lobster bisque was too thick, almost gummy, and there weren't any tidbits of lobster. Taste wise it wasn't screaming, "Lob-stah!" The place is very new and big. If you're coming with a group of, you good.

Yelp
As we headed out to take in Acadia National Park, we searched for a nearby coffee shop to grab some well-made coffee. We found it nearby in Belfast. A uniquely named restaurant - Bell the Cat. We were greeted promptly by the owner, a delightful gentleman that was ready to seat us immediately. When we explained we were just here for takeout coffee, he escorted us to a second main counter where they were doing a bustling takeout business. We grabbed two coffees as multiple people came in to grab their breakfast pastries and food to go. The coffee was very good - hot, bold, and flavorful. It made the drive to Acadia so much easier. Give this place a try, it's delightful.

Yelp
I got a cinnamon roll for breakfast. It was right out of the oven and delicious. Highly recommend. Atmosphere is nice, and service was great.

Yelp
What a pleasant experience I had today. The place is in an office park, with a ton of parking. When I walked in, I was struck by the spaciousness as well as the cleanliness. What a breath of fresh air. (The heat was out and it was freezing in the dining area, but I didn't mind. They were handing out cups of coffee to combat the cold.) Order at the counter, have it delivered to your seat. What a fine wrap I had--the veggies were delicious. My companion got a turkey sandwich and it did exceed expectations. All in all, I can't wait to go back. With chips, both sandos came to under 25 dollars. By the way, save room for cookies. Exquisite.

Yelp
Wow, today's. breakfast was truly amazing! One of the best lattes I've ever had. the coffee itself was bold but not bitter and the foam was thick and rich and lasted the entire drink. We had the chicken and waffle that was perfect and could have fed two. The chicken was so tender for a fried item and the waffle was light and airy. The red flannel hash was perfect! Lots of tender corned beef and just the right amount of the delicious beet slaw. My over easy eggs were cooked perfectly and even the toast was awesome. One of the best breakfasts I've had out in years!

Michael P.

Yelp
Wonderful place. Plenty of good food and coffee. Come hungry and leave satisfied. Lots of parking. Friendly staff
google avatar

Yelp
Just took food to go. Food was decent. Location is just tucked away in a parking lot. Convenient to stop through on the way somewhere but not sure Id go out of my way to visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Easy access to Rte. 1 made an amazing stop off in Belfast. Super yummy fresh foods. Wonderful friendly service.

Yelp
Great spot for a coffee or tea! They also have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu and they make a great London fog! This is a newer location for them just across the way from their old location! And it's alot bigger! Lots of options and very friendly staff!

MM B.

Yelp
We loved this place and we didn't even get to stay and eat there! Love the concept (take out on one side, dine in on the other) and the style and atmosphere were perfect. Boy child and I had breakfast burritos that were great but I was jealous of Hubs, who got the Scaredy Goat Sandwich (amazing). Also snagged the best Russian Tea Cake cookie I've ever had. Good coffee too!

Sue C.

Yelp
We went here for breakfast today. All of the staff were very friendly and polite. Food was very good. I would definitely go back and text it to all.

Bobbi B.

Yelp
Great food, great specialty coffees, super nice employees, cute atmosphere. Traveling through from IN. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Bell the Cat is counter-table service style restaurant. You order at the counter and they deliver to your table. I had the blueberry French toast and enjoyed the uniqueness of it. There's an entire bar of coffee varieties to choose from and other coffee drinks available. Great stop for a quick and easy breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Bell the Cat for breakfast while on vacation! Had the red flannel hash which I had never heard of. Gluten free toast was available to substitute for regular bread. Large chunks of corned beef, with potatoes, beet slaw, 2 eggs and toast! Generous portions and very yummy! Service was at the counter and food brought to the table. Cafe was clean and modern. I would be happy to go back!

Dorothy L.

Yelp
Cafeteria style food. Bought a sandwich that barely had any turkey on it and the bread was bland and crumbly. Being in their new location you feel like you are at a medical center cafeteria.

Jenny D.

Yelp
I had a cream cheese salmon bagel with a lavender latte and my husband had the Bell breakfast. Both were so good. The coffee latte was nice and hot. Plenty of places to sit in an open atmosphere.

Brenda C.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast with fresh ingredients, great open space, and personable staff. The red velvet hash was incredible. I have never had anything like it before but love to try new things. My husband and I were very pleased with our breakfast and will be back.

Misty C.

Yelp
First timer: Walk in , greeted by hostess. Get menu, place order, then find a seat. They bring your meal to your table. Food portions are great and taste amazing! Service is very personable. I'm a people watcher, and Georgia, you are amazing. The restrooms are very clean. Separate section for take out orders. Would definitely recommend it!

John D.

Yelp
Food is great, service is great, portions are generous and atmosphere is fun. Very good value for money. And very nice people working the place.

Rosie and Tigg K.

Yelp
Salad was good as was sandwich we ordered. Coffee was a disappointment, very acidic. Regular fare. Don't like to be asked for a tip BEFORE we receive food. They deliver food to table, is that worth a tip????? Pay your staff more and don't ask customers to foot your payroll.
google avatar

Gail G.

Yelp
I haven't been to the new location yet the old location was awesome. Great food personable staff and very clean. The food is great !

Yelp
I have a gluten allergy so I was happy to see the GF options. I saw a daily soup menu while I was in line. It gave the ingredients of each soup and said the corn chowder was gluten-free. I did not read the ingredients because it said the soup was Gluten free. When I got to the register to order there was another daily soup menu, and I read the ingredients listed. It had wheat in the ingredients list. The woman at the register couldn't tell me if the corn chowder was gluten-free or not, so I didn't get it. I selected the Earl sandwich (roast beef with horseradish) on gluten-free bread, toasted. We sat and the sandwiches were delivered in a good timeframe given how busy it was today. The sandwich came with a small package of Lays potato chips and a pickle. The ingredients were fresh and sandwich was very good. I used the ladies room. It was clean and well stocked.

Yelp
A fabulous sandwich shop located near Reny's for the win! I had a fabulous tuna melt (modified to use cheddar cheese) on the most delish bread. A very full menu with lots of choices. My companion followed my lead and had the same lunch. Crew at the front was friendly and accommodating. It appeared to me that all the tables were filled with happy patrons.

Kacy R.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast on our way down the coast of Maine. Super fast, friendly service. The restaurant side itself must be new because it is all freshly renovated and very clean. The food came out quickly. The hot mocha was in the top 3 best my husband has ever had, and he orders one every breakfast place that serves it. I got the bee sting breakfast sandwich and it was honestly perfect! The combination of hot honey and jalapeño cream cheese was sweet and spicy perfection!!! And the croissant was really good too. If we ever find ourself in this area again we would definitely come back! Thank you.

Sarah N.

Yelp
Excellent service, amazing menu (for all) and a great environment! Never disappointed.

Yelp
Let me start with that I really want to like this place, but I have yet to have a good experience. So I was convinced to give bell another try... As with every time I've been the staff was cold and rude. Sometimes places just have a vibe and everyone gets treated rudely however I observed that other customers were treated more respectfully. I ordered the veggie deluxe sandwich to go. The wait time considering how busy they were was reasonable. The sandwich was terrible. It's supposed to be "two eggs, sliced avocado, baby spinach, tomato, and cheddar cheese" on an English muffin. What I got was eggs, avocado on half, and Swiss cheese on an English muffin. Horrible. It was extremely disappointing. The eggs tasted like they hadn't been seasoned with anything at all. You could have at least used salt and pepper! Very bland. If you have to substitute an item, like the cheese... or you're missing items, please say something to the customer. The coffee was also gas station quality. Maine has lots of great local roasters. Please use one like Rock City, Coffee by design, or 44 North. if you're going to charge a premium the quality should reflect.

Frank B.

Yelp
The restaurant was clean and well organized, although we took our sandwiches for takeout. All the sandwiches were large and delicious. Everything was ready on time. The staff were very nice. We will be back for sure.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Dirty, weird service and atmosphere. Got eggs and corn beef hash, was bland and rubbery. Hotel lobby food. Good coffee and bloody mary though
google avatar

Maurice H.

Yelp
Was out here for work last week came here for breakfast some chicken and waffles omg thought I was down south. Very very good food they have a takeout and sit down lovely right restaurant with great bake goods and the food. A must go‼
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
This is a great place for lunch. We were passing through on the way to Bar Harbor. The menu has a wide variety of item to suit any palette. There were 6 fresh soups to choose from. Our group had Clam Chowder, Loaded Potato Soup, and Chicken and Dumpling Soup. Our sandwiches were Pulled Pork, Turkey Melt, and a Mozzarella, Pesto Panini - all good. If you're in Belfast, give it a try.
google avatar

Joy A.

Yelp
Excellent! Great menu choices, honest to goodness cappuccino that was as good as the ones I had in Venice! Our server was personable and kind. The food delish and so filling - if you are visiting don't think twice on a stop here - you won't be disappointed! Ohhh and get yourself a raspberry filled sugar cookie - you can thank me later!
google avatar

Victoria C.

Yelp
Wow. Can't believe we ignored this restaurant for years. A friend recommended it, we thought it was a fast food place or something. When they say "generous" portion of curried chicken salad on your greens they mean GENEROUS! Absolutely delicious and extra package of Ken's salad dressing no charge. My husband flipped over his (big) roast beef sandwich. Said the quality of the roast beef was excellent. And did I mention... it was BIG. The girls/women working here are so nice it's crazy, nice nice nice and so attentive. It's not fancy dining but it is QUALITY FOOD. And the prices are like from 15 years ago, no rip off prices anywhere. And! they have a drive up window for to go orders. Wow.
google avatar

Sonjulaine H.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Bagels were awesome and sandwiches and soups!! We had desserts too...everything was great! You must stop here if you're in town!!

Suzanne B.

Yelp
We order two sandwiches. Both were tasteless and one was not made as requested. Specifically there was almost no hummus in the Mediterranean wrap and the tuna panini was a soggy mess that fell apart. The two good things were a nice clean space and a lovely, helpful waitress, Morgan.
google avatar

Matt F.

Yelp
The food is great. Pricing is reasonable. Lots of seating indoor and out. Friendly staff. I wish we had one closer. The menu is extensive and you won't run out of things to try. The scone tasted good but was kinda flat like a cookie. Shape is off. Decor is hip and funky.

Jessica In Your Eyes M.

Yelp
Well, I really love this place yet some things have declined in value. Tuna sandwich used to be kind of chunky and full of tuna. Now it's sort of a whipped up version ,of tuna, much smaller and tasteless. Nasty and unappealing for the price. Go back to the old way if you can. Thanks!
google avatar

Ben T.

Yelp
tipping before you are seated ? crazy wrong get your own coffee/tea/water ? driest Ruben ever ! yes for the pickle inclusion - --nope , we ran out. REALLY ? how hard is it to keep a frigging jar of pickles ? until I questioned for a price change for incomplete order, service kid: we're out. Me: some price change then service kid: nervous laugh made direct question on the way out Them: went to look in the kitchen Them: "Oh, here we had wrapped it for tomorrow' it was a limp SPEAR, NOT a pickle.. Open Face bread NOT toasted or GRILLED under carriage neither corned beef nor sauerkraut saw liquid or butter during assembly, insufficient Russian dressing (which was actually Thousand Island.. there is a difference) bag of chips. a bit over priced even without considering the deficits. no follow up from roaming servers... could not even flag one for 10 minutes. .. HELLO could have made the lunch much better if I had a chance to ask about what the kitchen could improve for me. I wrote a DM to someone there.. said 'not the forum for this type of complaint, could a call and discuss the issue. FUCK NO,I already spent enough tiome on feed back , now a serious critique I explained it totally, forward the DM to whomever-- the person was arrogant and haughty (two similar things) I finally said 'send me a refund' no refund I educated them on what should have been a very succulent classic sandwich , even though it was an open face. and closed with if you do not think a DM is appropriate forum, I guess I will take it public.. so here it is . 1 out of 10 chance I'm going back.. I have had very good lunches, including a Cobb Salad but the last , and I mean last, experience was BS TG package meal huge price this year. keep your expectations low, fuck that tipping before service, because it will bite you in the ass

G B.

Yelp
Try their wine tasting and fixed menu. Incredible pairing, amazing food, and a very nice atmosphere. Must try!
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Absolutely love Bell the Cat ! Here visiting for a week and we have had breakfast here every morning. Tried several items in the menu and loved everything. The new location is great and the service is exceptional. Definitely recommend them. Looking forward to coming back in the Fall.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way out of Maine- the best breakfast ever!!! Cheap prices amazing quality and fast. Grabbed these blueberry root beers and they were incredible

Jason N.

Yelp
. Do not waste your time or money. The gas station has better food, service and ambiance. It scored beneath my high school cafeteria
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
We had brunch here on Father's Day and it was wonderful! Their menu truly has something for everyone from our picky 12-year old to our health conscience daughter who loves fruits, vegetables and avocado toast. The dining area has lots of options- many booths for privacy, indoor or outdoor seating and even a bar area to grab something quickly. The interior lights were interesting and the new paint and decor were nice and clean. We appreciated the ability to get real maple syrup (they had actually run out and sent someone to pick it up ASAP!) for the pancakes etc. And I loved being able to add flavor to my coffee, something I enjoy for special breakfasts and brunches. Even on a busy day like Father's Day, they were well staffed and knowledgeable and friendly. We will definitely return!
google avatar

Shelby D.

Yelp
This a great place to stop by for lunch and a coffee to go. The loaded BLT was really good and my husband really liked the salmon sandwich he got. With covid, the place is doing great. Booths are spaced out, hand sanitizer, masks.. the standard. Clean place.
google avatar

Stacy G.

Yelp
Great place to grab some sandwiches. Really nice and clean little place. Sandwiches and soup were both real good.
