Bell Tower has sports bar energy and decent food - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"There are a few reasons you might land at Bell Tower inNob Hill: one, you’re in the area and need a decentbrunch; two, you want food after 11pm; or three, you’re a purple-blooded Vikings fan. This American bar and restaurant serves crowdpleasers, like scrambles, nachos, and mac and cheese, that will likely slip right out of your memory as soon as you fork over your credit card, but it certainly gets the job done when the specific scenarios we mentioned arise. On non-game days, we suggest piling into the old-timey, Western-style dining room or staking out a spot in their covered parklets to do some people-watching. But if you are in fact there to see the game, arrive early and post up at the long wooden bar—just know that this place will be packed and service tends to slow down, so you may need to be patient in between quarters." - Patrick Wong

Nachos with tater tots were great and very filling. Split with my wife and we were both really full. Staff was very nice and professional as well.

We've been coming to BT since before Trump's Plague and were relieved that it survived that scourge. The food has always been unpretentious and generous, both in flavor and size. It's actually our go-to not only for late-night eats but for their pulled pork nachos and truffled macaroni and cheese. And french onion soup. The waitstaff has always been very friendly, diligent and personable. The prices are spot on. I really wish they'd open another place up at Tahoe because they'd do really well and their vibe is just what SLT needs. Parking can be a bit trying but it's worth it. There's no threat from semis or anything really bad (see my review about the mochi donut place in Sacramento) so you'll be safe crossing the street. Anyway take your appetite and go. You won't be disappointed.

Soupe l'oignon was majestic. Pork benedict was delicious. The place has a very cozy ambience

We visited Bell Tower on a Wednesday evening for dinner, and the experience was a mixed bag. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated. We ordered the escargot, French onion soup, and Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Unfortunately, it took about half an hour for the food to arrive. The escargot came with 6 pieces and two garlic breads. The flavor was okay, but the escargot themselves were small and not particularly memorable. The French onion soup was the highlight of our meal. It was acceptable, with a good aroma and taste. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich, which comes with balsamic onions, brie, and spinach, was served with fries. I saw lots of people ordering this and wanted to try it out. However, the chicken turned out to be really dry and plain in flavor.

One of the last friendly and honest neighborhood restaurants left in the city. Plenty of outdoor seating with rustic furniture, very friendly and genuinely attentive servers. The food quality is good, reasonable portions; overall service is excellent. In a better world, a restaurant like this one would be a dime a dozen. In this one, where restaurants compete to see who can give the least and gouge the most, it's five stars all the way, a civic treasure.

Google
Nice staff, dog friendly, spacious inside and a robust outdoor seating setup which includes heaters above the table that you can turn on yourself, and TVs. The staff was attentive and even gave my dog a water bowl. Three stars though because the food is very basic. It was good, I enjoyed it, but the quality was very mediocre. I’ll be back and will try their drinks - four starts if they end up being good. Great place to go for spacious seating, dog friendly. Basics east.

We went @630 on a Thursday and it wasn't busy but was full within an hour. Our waitress was so nice and the food was delicious. We are from out of town but if we were in the area, we would definitely return.

Google
I checked out the menu before going and was not overly impressed. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The spinach salad was off the hook. Pork tenderloin special was cooked perfectly, moist, and tasty. The other specials looked good as well. Portions are generous. Wait staff was awesome, good humored.

Yelp
Great food &!ambiance at reasonable prices! I love is and always get their wonderful French onion soup

Yelp
Barb, thank you for opening your arms to the community with specials meals and joy. You place is setup so conforting. Enjoyed great food and drinks. Volka and Cranberry Juice Cheeseburger Spring Rolls, stuffed & fried with ground beef, mixed cheese, cabbage, pickles, onions with 1000 island dressing Venison Plate, 3 bone venison loin with mushroom wild rice, sautéed green beans and a red wine Demi It is a place you must visit. Cheers!

Yelp
It's definitely a blend of a bar and maybe what I imagine a sort of American version of a pub is like. While they do have a somewhat full menu the things I liked the best was the French onion soup and some of the other appetizer type dishes I think are the way to go. Decent beers at the bar, the wine is alright too. Don't think would go out of my way to eat here again but if I'm looking for somewhere to pop into a bar to watch some sports and have a small bite, I'd stop by.

Yelp
This is the worst meal I've ever had at a restaurant. I ordered the buffalo wings and was served dry overcooked wings with pieces of meat missing. I know I was served leftover wings they had recooked and covered in sauce. I let them know I was unsatisfied with the order and they remade it, I saw a same wing they had just turned over on the plate and reserved to me. I complained again and the server, while polite, had the audacity to say "we got a bad order of wings and we know they're small, that why we gave you a couple extra pieces. They did not acknowledge that I was served recooked wings they had probably left laying around. Unacceptable. I think they had given me leftover wings because they thought I wouldnt make a fuss, since I'm asian. I've read other reviews of the place and they look mostly positive. They at least had the decency to give me 15% off on the bill when I asked for the check. It goes without saying that I will not be returning.

Yelp
Reliable food. Pleasant staff. Well priced. A Polk Street favorite for 30 years and running!

Yelp
Honestly not a bad place to eat. I used to live a few blocks up the hill and this would be one of the places I like to come by with my then bf/now husband. Bell Tower is a bar & restaurant. Food is decent. Service friendly. I used to like their burgers and beer. Now that I don't really drink anymore, I will probably get an iced tea.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Ambiance was super cute. The service was top notch. We didn't wait for anything. Get the nachos. Best carnitas I've ever had

Yelp
It's pretty great pub food and priced as such. On a busy Polk street with long lines to sometimes mediocre bars and subpar fast food there's belltower. Attentive service and strong drinks. Never more than a 5 minute wait. I'd say it's a strong evening meal before taking in the rest of Polk st.

Yelp
We came here on a Wednesday evening for dinner and the meal could have been better. When we arrived, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated, afterwards we ordered the escargot, french onion soup, and the shrimp farfalle. After waiting for half an hour (yes, it took quite a bit), we finally got the food escargot, 3/5: the escargot came with 6 pieces and two garlic breads. The flavor was alright, however the escargot itself were small. Just was not much to write home about french onion soup, 4/5: this was probably the best out of what we ordered, it was a perfectly acceptable that smelled and tasted good shrimp farfalle, 3/5: the farfalle came a little more watery than I would have liked. The amount of shrimp was quite good I think Bell Tower is an alright restaurant, but with so many great options in the area, it's hard to say it stands out

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot that delivers exactly what you want in casual bar/restaurant. I've never had a bad experience here. The burger hits all the right notes when you're craving something satisfying and unpretentious. They're also dog friendly.

Yelp
Had the crispy chicken sandwich. It was tasty and service was great , super nice people and space.
google avatar

Walid F.

Yelp
The service and ambiance here was great, but the food was so bad. I think it was the cheese, most likely brie, that ruined it but I was not a fan of any dish. The French onion soup was bland and was over powered by the taste of the brie. Didn't even have that many onions in it, mostly just the bland broth and cheese. It was definitely not worth $10. And then to my surprise the same thing happened with the sandwich. Maybe the other dishes might be different but I was not a fan of the food.

Yelp
Came here after getting some drinks at a nearby bar. The service and overall vibes were nice, but the food was not great. We split some soup, mac and cheese, and spring rolls. The mac and cheese was pretty flavorless, and the soup was fine. The spring rolls were surprisingly good and a unique take on the item. The

Yelp
Bell Tower is a true blue old school SF bar/restaurant. Hadn't been here in years until last weekend. The prices are more than reasonable. Drinks were good and the food was tasty. Service was a bit gruff and felt like an interrogation when trying to get a seat at the bar and then a table when the bar was full. It must be noted the female server was more than welcoming and caring though. Felt like they had a rough night before we came in. We'll give it another shot and see how it goes!

Yelp
It's 11pm on a saturday. You're a little tipsy and hungry from the night, and you stumble apon this hidden gem in russian hill. You are obviously a genius and order the potato skins. They hit your mouth and are the most delicious, cheesy, flavorful potato skins you've ever had. you make a cheesy joke with the waitress that they were just alright, but in reality, they've made your night.

Kelli J.

Yelp
Not bad at all, I was surprised that this place had such mixed reviews. 4 stars because they were out of a loooot of stuff and didn't meet us know when we walked in. Drinks took a very long time to come. But the food we did get was delicious and our server was great! Fun and cute atmosphere, would come back and sit at the bar for sure

Chantel H.

Yelp
The two food servers on a beautiful Sunday were so rude, and dismissive! I almost wanted to say never mind and leave without getting my take out that I ordered. Thank goodness the bartender was nice while I waited. Then I ordered the Mac n cheese and it was incredibly oily or greasy. Not good at all! Very disappointed

Yelp
My brother lives nearby and so when we went up to visit, we decided to try this place. My dad and I ordered the Parmesan crusted chicken. I don't typically finish my meals- but I had to finish this one. Everything was delicious! My mom and daughter ordered the pulled pork and they were also raving about it. The service was GREAT. Very professional and kind. I liked the entire vibe of the place. A little bit darker inside, which I enjoy. My family and I will definitely be returning next time we are in San Francisco!

Yelp
Ambiance: It did seem a little dim inside. That's reasonable, because of the sunshine outside. Service: Good, I like it. The staff there were friendly. I thought the service here feels like being at a nice restaurant. Food: I was originally intending to get a breakfast burrito and a latte. Instead, I ordered breakfast quesadilla as an alternative. I also ordered a cup of coffee. I am so glad I gave it a try. The breakfast quesadilla and coffee were satisfying. I finished it - a great way to get that quick meal. And as with seating: I noticed they have indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is still a good choice. When it is a nice day outside, outdoor is a good choice. Yes, dine in and take out are both available.

Yelp
Such fabulous employees ,fun, friendly and Down to earth Local late night Night cap place for this neighborhood spot. When I've dropped in I see many regulars . Fast friendly service to boot

Logan F.

Yelp
Amazing service!! Fresh and fantastic food. Visiting SF and we stopped in randomly for beers. We ended up ordering clam chowder, French onion soup, Potato skins, and spring rolls. All perfectly balanced and fresh. I also want to note again the service we received was top tier. Great vibes and positive people! We went Thurs for lunch and it seemed to be filled with regulars. Loved it!

Yelp
I've been to the bell tower a few times and every time it's been great. The servers are always really nice and the drinks are well priced. We live in the neighborhood and have done takeout from here a few times and it's honestly one of the best burgers we've had in the city!

Yelp
I love this place. Great food. Amazing nachos burgers and drinks. The service was great and cozy late night spot that is open late for food as well!

Yelp
I live close by and want to like this place but almost every time there is a screw up. Either one never gets their food, the food has something on it that was asked to be removed, training on service animals is inconsistent and apparently there is no manager? I used to have a service animal, warned my friend has a service animal that they might be weird about it. Sure enough they made her sit outside when they were nearly empty inside, when she re-iterated that her small dog is a medical alert dog they asked to see proof (which your not allowed to do) other times she has no problems. Tired of taking chances she understandably refuses to eat here now. Another time someone ordered no blue cheese in their salad, it came with blue cheese. It was taken back and 30 min later we finally get checked up on. It's just me and my partner.. waitress "goes to see what's going on" and another 30 min later I am completely done with my food she comes back and says they lost the ticket. We just want a refund at this point and wanted to give feedback but apparently there is no manager. The place also seems dirty on the inside, and the weathered wooden tables and chairs outside are uncomfortable. One gave me a splinter and the sun is almost always shining right in your face. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you are already drunk and just want to hangout somewhere because everywhere else that serves food is closed.

Yelp
Regarding my visit on 6/16/23: reasonable experience + great customer service: I ate up the sugar rim because I felt like my lemon drop could've used more simple syrup and preferred if I didn't have a lemon slice with four large seeds in it (aesthetic detail, it's more a personal preference for seedless lemon in cocktails) and if they brought a mat for my glass so it doesn't slip around--strong pour or Tito and very simple. Amazing customer service!!! I asked for more sugar and he gave me a replacement which he really didn't have to nice of him. But I lost my sugar rim because there wasn't one placed (attention to detail) Then I found out the prices were extremely reasonable mine was $10.50 (pre tip). What?! And yes I'm definitely coming back because I LIKE sitting by the window facing area for people watching. I like this restaurant plus I'm constantly in this area.

Yelp
Heard good things about this place but when my girlfriend and I finally tried the food just seemed mediocre and overpriced. I guess it was adequate but not much more than that. Friendly staff. Nice outdoor seating.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
I can't say enough positive things about the Bell Tower except I wish I would've tried them 20 years ago! From the servers to the owner Barbi you are treated like family! Support and enjoy!

Anthony E.

Yelp
Awesome place to be, from the bar to the back of house. Great drinks, immaculate service (s/o Shannon and Kyle, let's go Mets.) and diverse food selection. 100 stars, if possible
google avatar

Roop K.

Yelp
It's great that this place is open late but not really a place I would spend money on food ever again. We got quesadilla, Mac and cheese, and the potato skins. And all of it was just... off. The quesadilla had a weird textured cheese - not sure how that could happen. The Mac and cheese lacked cheese and was all macroni. The potato skins were fine. I didn't get drinks here but my friends did and one of theirs tasted like it had no alcohol while the other one was too strong.
google avatar

Elise F.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in San Francisco. Their food is incredible I wanna eat here every day for the rest of my life. Ambiance impeccable, service even better. Try the burger it slaps. However, there is a policy that you can't take too many load-bearing nachos if you weren't the person who ordered them for the table. More of an FYI as this is a common courtesy thing anyways which we appreciated.

Yelp
I had a Great meal 1 day on 2nd time it was a sandwich from hell. Maybe they changed Cooks.

Yelp
Popped in for an early evening visit. The site was clean and was kept well. There were a few two-person tables open on a Sunday evening. It's a half bar, half-restaurant with one bartender and a couple staff running tables. I went with one of the specials, the salmon tacos and got a fresh squeezed IPA on draft. The meal had no downsides to it, and they gave two layers of corn tortillas-- which sometimes is hard to come by lol. A little messy with the sauce but not bad. I'm not giving 5 stars because I'm being a bit more picky on 5/5 as perfection includes that type of performance across many categories. I would have given it 4 but there was a menu discrepancy. I noticed the bill charged $24.50 for the tacos, but the menu said $21.50. I didn't really care about the $3 but just wanted to let the staff know so they could fix it for the future customers. I let the staff know and got my bill back but it hadn't been adjusted. After paying I delivered the check up front and let them know again about the issue. The staff was apologetic and said he did fix it, but must have made a mistake and did not in the end. They did offer to buy me a beer lol( but I was driving) it wasn't any big deal in the end, again it's only $3. So 3 stars for the sloppiness on the menu and not actually fixing the check the first time. ‍

Lamarr E.

Yelp
Find me a cheaper bar in SF with better deals... I'll wait. It's got solid bar food and it's a good place to grab a drink. The service is good and everyone here is very chill. I got a beer, a Caesar Salad, nachos, and Mac cheese for under 60 dollars during my most recent visit. That's a steal in SF! If you're looking a place with late night grubs, I for sure would check out the bell tower.
google avatar

Tanya D.

Yelp
This place is no frills and not fancy. Pretty basic menu and it's usually good. They have plenty of seating inside and outside. I like it because they're open late (2am) and they never rush you, which is appreciated.
google avatar

Rosa E.

Yelp
Honestly arrive at the restaurant at 4 pm got seated right away and got the menus. Which is great, however it's been 20 minutes and no one has come to our table to give us water or take our order! This is pretty disappointing as we have been here before and the wait staff has been amazing. In the end end after waiting 30 minutes with no service we got up and left. Mind you the restaurant was pretty empty with many tables empty. Left a star for the past times we have been here
google avatar

Tia L.

Yelp
The food was okay tasting and it did take a while when we came in at 10pm on a Thursday night. But we were able to get food here until 12am in SF!!! and the servers were so friendly. And I liked the ambience of the place it gave old timey eclectic French dive bar vibes. I'd come back here for a late night fried food bite.

Yelp
Doesn't it seem like this place has been on Polk at Jackson for like ever? I wish there were more places that have been around since the early 1990's like this dependable spot. There's an actual bell tower where I keep thinking the Hunchback of Polk Gulch must swing down on a rope to rescue Esmeralda... and have a burger, rare no doubt. I just like that it's here ready for the occasional drop-by meal. I have to admit it had been years since my last visit when I recall having a reunion lunch with a former boss. This time, in the throes of a fluctuating pandemic, I took advantage of an empty restaurant on a rainy Sunday morning. I forgot how big the bar is here as I took a seat next to the window. The full brunch menu was just as I expected - chicken and waffles, corned beef hash, fried egg sandwich, pizza rolls...pizza rolls? Carb central for sure but awfully tempting. I went for the $13.50 Breakfast Quesadilla, which of course, a heftier serving than I was expecting. It consisted of pulled pork, scrambled eggs, tomato, and melted cheddar jack cheese folded into a mammoth flour tortilla. It was topped with splooges of chipotle aioli and tomatillo sauce and came with a side of pico de gallo (photo). Of course it was delicious, and I believe it was owner Barbi Tice who stopped by and thanked me for my business. Very thoughtful, it went a long way for me. FOOD - 4 stars...pork, cheese and a big tortilla...what else do you need? AMBIANCE - 4 stars...it's relaxing when it's empty SERVICE - 5 stars...pretty darn attentive with a conscientious owner TOTAL - 4 stars...no bats in this belfry RELATED - Exploring Nob and Russian Hills? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2IfTVOB

Yelp
Came here on a beautiful Friday sunny day with a few friends. It was starting to get a little busy after 6pm but we were able to grab some outdoor seats. Service was great, ordered a few dirty martini's. Didn't try their food, but all a reason to come back. Service was prompt. Will definitely come back here again.

Nicole T.

Yelp
A great neighborhood bar/restaurant. Staff is always super friendly, big regulars crowd. Love the whole menu and very fair prices, one of my favorite spots!

Pamela J.

Yelp
I love Bell Tower. Great food and the staff is very friendly. It does get a little noisy. But that is because the restaurant and bar is always busy. That's a good thing!

Yelp
Nice traditional bar/restaurant hybrid near Union Square. Their mains are pretty solid and you can get great options even on a budget. The popular item in our group was the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, which also comes with a side of fries - it tasted great and was a pretty cheap yet filling option on the menu. The farfalle pasta and the shrimp and rice dish were also good options that my friends enjoyed. We went there pretty early on a weekday so our service was fast, and they were able to accommodate an extra person in our party even though the table didn't have enough chairs. The inside of the restaurant was well lit with a lot of natural light (it's on a block corner). It was a very casual experience and overall very enjoyable. The space is small ish so it does feel a little cramped when you're navigating through the restaurant but it's not an issue at all once you are seated.

Yelp
Loved this place for a late night snack and drink! We came here around 11pm and there was a good crowd but we easily got table. I just ordered some wine and Mac and cheese - it was soo cheesy and delicious, and a good portion for sharing as a snack. Would definitely come back here for a late bite!

Yelp
I went to Bell Tower for Thanksgiving and loved it! They offer a 3 course pre-fix menu with a reasonable price. You have the option of turkey, ham or salmon ( for an additional fee)... great service too!

Yelp
We loved the chicken quesadilla with a side of fresh pico de gallo. Our server was attentive, kind and friendly. He gave us great customer service and a great experience. Thank you!

Yelp
I saw that my last review was taken down because I didn't actually go eat there. Well, I've taken it upon myself to go eat some food there, and all I can say is that my opinion has not changed. The food was NOT very good, there wasn't anything wrong it just didn't taste good The service was good so for that I'll give it 2 stars lol

Yelp
Prices are very reasonable and food is good quality. Drinks are also well priced and well made. Service is sometimes excellent, sometimes meh.
