Best Austin Restaurant Dishes of 2022, According to Eater Austin Editors | Eater Austin

"G’s Dynamite Deli has been my go-to sandwich spot on our side of the river, but alas, it closed during the pandemic. And luckily, the Italian deli fits the bill exactly. It’s a no-frills restaurant, with a long list of hot and cold sandwiches. I got the Flying Turkey, a cold sub with nice chunks of avocado and spicy mustard. It works perfectly for an easy lunch, and they often have cookies for sale, this time, it was a wonderful red velvet one. which was perfect. —NC" - Nadia Chaudhury

Walking into this place instantly brought me back to that old-school New York deli vibe—the kind of neighborhood spot everyone wants to be a part of. It's got heart, hustle, and character to spare. Roberto, who clearly knows his way around a breakfast griddle, handed me one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve had in years. It hit that perfect balance of savory, satisfying, and nostalgic. Whether you're rolling in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you'll find something to love. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a regular on your first visit.

Google
Nice bit competent subs served in a hole in the wall spot south of the river. Varied menu with hot and cold subs, Italian and American style. Burgers as well. Bread is nice and thick to soak up juice and Italian dressing. Good prices. Not many sides to choose from but the sandwiches are large enough that I didn’t bother ordering any chips. Soda fountain and bottle drinks.

Google
Wow!.... A great lil hideaway at the edge of Austin TX. The food is savory and a wide selection! It took me about 10 minutes just to read through the menu and try to decide on a sub!!

Andrew Skoda

Google
Waited two minutes to place my order, ordered the chicken parm. What I got was nuggets of grilled chicken covered in Parmesan cheese and marinara. Otherwise a chop chicken with cheese and red sauce. Stick to the cold subs and you’re fine. Cost $17.

Never had a bad meal from Bella Donna’s. An Austin staple. Lunch time hero. Meatball sub, cheese burger, Brklyn cheesteak, all legends

Google
I usually give this place 5 stars. But the last time I went and got my pushcart hot dogs they wasn’t as good as before. The bun was soggy from the relish juice and I could see the toppings was put on backwards! Tighten up Bella Donna’s or you going to become a hit and miss spot to me.

Google
This place is a must! The food is always fantastic. The service is second to none. They always make you feel welcome and appreciated. The spaghetti is my usual go-to; however, I have recently discovered their burgers. Wow. They are awesome burgers. Big juicy patties and fresh fix'n's. Man, they are really good.

Google
Thus far everything I’ve had on the menu has been of excellent quality and good flavor. The price point at Belladonna’s can’t be beat. Chili dogs and Fritos pies hit right. The hot sandwiches and burgers are delicious. Burger features a real beef hand formed patty. The double cheese mushroom burger is delicious and has GRAVY. Yes; gravy. The Brooklyn Meets Philly is also delicious and I needed to attack that deliciousness with knife and fork. Pickup orders are well-packaged. Wrapped in foil which is appreciated, as I’ve been sampling hot sandwiches featuring gravy as of late. I’m looking forward to sampling other items on their menu.

Yelp
It's my husband's birthday and he wanted a traditional deli-style Italian sub. That search led us here and we are so glad for it. The ingredients were super fresh and the meats were a generous amount. Being able to upgrade a sub for a footlong for just $4.50 more (original sandwich is just under $10) is such a great deal too. The person taking orders at the counter was friendly and patient, though they were smaller with phone and online orders. Place was clean, with plenty of tables for dining in, but nearly everyone was doing an order pickup.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and the ambience is about as anti-chain feeling as possible. I intend to return many times and try everything on the menu.

Yelp
This spot excels in subs, offering an impressive variety. Ordering ahead is convenient, and they efficiently handle large orders. Over the past decade, I've observed speedy fulfillment of massive orders. The Chicago Style sub is my personal favorite due to its delightful flavor. The inside of facility is clean spacious for large groups. However, parking can be challenging - my only gripe about this place. Overall, highly recommended.

Yelp
This place is PACKED at lunch time, and it is totally understandable once you have eaten there. Friendly guy (owner?) at the register, kitchen staff cranking out orders pretty fast, large menu with tons of different options and varieties of food. The several different subs I've had have all been excellent, and the prices are good. Gotta give them a try!!!

Yelp
I've been eating at Bella Donna Subs for at least 20 years, maybe longer. You'll be a bit surprised at the place, I was the first time. It's a little dumpy but is clean. Their menu on the wall is very home made looking but a lot of their food is too. They make a very decent Muffaletta Sandwich but my favorite it Italian Sausage with peppers, onions, cheese and sauce on a sub roll. I have it all the time and it's really good. I'm quite happy that they've survived the pandemic and still are usually very busy at lunch time. Most people who work in the area have eaten here before and come back regularly. Definitely worth trying if you've never been to it.

Yelp
Stopped by this sub shop after dropping my car off for repairs while waiting for my Lyft. I thought I would be safe and ordered one of my favs - a Rueben. The rideshare showed up before I could get my sandwich. I asked them to slow my order as I was only going to pick up my rental and would be back. I always think...how can anyone mess up a Rueben. Well this place did! The marbled rye bread was excellent. The shop chopped up the corned beef. Why would anyone do that? The meat was dry and some pieces were bacon like texture. The wasn't much sauerkraut either. The dressing was sparse but I always ask for more on the side. This was the only thing allowing me to finish the sandwich. The service at the counter was great. The cooks did their jobs. Please for the love of God...teach them how to make a proper Rueben! I almost opted for the pastrami but they may slaughter (chop) that as well.

Yelp
Excellent choice. My coworkers were brought here based on recommendations from locals and man this was a winner. It doesn't look like much - misspelled menu items, broken signage, and all - but the line going out the door was a sign we were in the right place. My only complaint is that half our orders were wrong - I ordered the regular size southwest chicken on wheat and my coworker had a foot long southwest steak on white, but I got steak on white and he got a foot long steak on wheat. Another coworker didn't get her sandwich at all. That said, I ate what I was served (no time to fight the line and get where we needed on time) and was VERY happy with it. Excellent flavor, the bread was a knockout, just a fantastic sandwich. Maybe even better than what I thought wanted.

Yelp
Omg this place is a hidden gem. The subs are out of this world. Extremely friendly staff. They nailed with roast beef sub.

Yelp
It's nice I'll be going back. Cookies are yummy sandwich was good nothing amazing but good

Yelp
Nice little sandwich spot, wouldn't call it a deli bit not quite a burger joint either. Maybe a combo because they were slinging the burgers out the door. I went with a classic Italian with lite mayo with Italian dressing and peppers. The bread was fresh and really airy for the type of place, i would say a 7 on bread but I looked the outer to be crunchier and the center to be light. This was light all around baguette style bread. The cured meat was tasty and the lettuce and tomato were very fresh and crispy. I paired it with some baked lays and a sweet tea! The tea had a lot of room for improvement, sugar was overpowering and it was several hours old. Without being refrigerated the tea will spoil quickly. Overall not bad but not the best! I would def eat here again and if someone was in this area I would tell them to check it out.

Yelp
Really love this place, the only knock is if you are ordering for delivery please make sure you verify that you will be receiving your entire order. I order for several of our employees at least twice per week, the last 4 consecutive orders have been delivered incomplete. The guys are always super nice and apologetic but it is still super frustrating when you wait an hour then when it shows up you are missing a dish or two. Still one of my favorite places to eat in Austin. Arguably the best Italian food in Austin hands down! Jim H

Yelp
Horrible place. Will never go here again. I got home and my chip bag was eaten by rats. No wonder why the chips were stale.

Yelp
In the area getting my car serviced and I love asking the locals where they go for a good lunch? Bella Donna came up. So my wife and I headed over and all I can say is WoW! Now I'm a SoCal transplant and I've be eaten at many a deli in Los Angeles. Jewish, Italian, American even Korean. This place has an amazing menu. My wife had the Meat ball sub and I had the "Club." The "Meatball sandwich" portions was huge. Nice size meat balls, with a warm red sauce The meal comes with chips and a medium fountain drink and a homemade cookie. The Club came on three slices of lightly toasted white bread. All the ingredients were fresh. It came with a nice "oil and vinegar", sauce. This place gets busy around lunch time, and the orders are made by hand, so it takes a few minutes before your order may come up. I recommend calling ahead and give your first and last name or initial, to avoid confusion. I highly recommend this place. All my followers know I love value in a food tasting meal. Great value here folks. You will certainly find something you've been missing at the chains sandwich shops. Michael C. Georgetown, Tx.

Yelp
Bella Donna has been around a long time. They definitely have a system down. They are only open during business hours M-F. The menu here is quite extensive and so far everything I've tried has been spot on! I recently ordered the Italian cheese steak sandwich and it was delicious! The peppers and onions were grilled perfectly and the cheese had some good stretch. I also loved the overstuffed pastrami sandwich too. If you happen to be in this area during the week looking for lunch I'd recommend going here. Pro tip: order online ahead of time for no wait
google avatar

Christian J.

Yelp
Great sandwich shop in the industrial area off of Burleson Rd. The service is fast and the tables are always clean. It is quite a deal for an $8 sandwich. I highly recommend the Reuben and the Philly cheese steak. Everything on the menu is we're trying and the cold subs are even good. I would say the hot sandwiches are their specialty and they cook them fast so not much of a wait even during the busy time of the day.

Yelp
Great little Italian place in a warehouse district in Austin near the airport. Not quite New York but not Subway. Fast, friendly staff and fresh food.
google avatar

Frankie C.

Yelp
This place is pretty solid. It has gotten a little expensive so order smart. But there are only a handful of places to get a good italian sub around this city and this is one of them. If your in the neighborhood don't miss the chance!
google avatar

Yelp
Took the lunch crew here to eat today. This is actually a really good place if you're not familiar with the area. Their sandwiches are huge. Their cookies are extremely fresh good We had a grilled chicken sandwich, a meatball sub and the southwest cheesesteak sandwich. All were some thing we would get again. This place will deliver as well as it's smart to call ahead and pick it up just in case the line is long. Definitely go to this place and check it out.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
I probably never would have gone here if I didnt work and live so close. The sandwiches here are on point. Then menu is huge so if you can imagine a sub type sandwich they have it. Think everything from a Reuben to a Hamburger. The prices are also very on point. I'm not sure how they manage to keep almost every sandwich on the menu under 8 bucks with rising food costs. This is the perfect spot for a quick lunch.
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
The sandwiches are so good and huge! The menu has something for everyone. The prices are similar to other sandwich places.

Yelp
I came here on lunch the other day with my coworker. It was the first time I had ever been here or heard about it. Apparently a lot of people from work go here. My coworker ordered ahead for us which came in handy because when we arrived it was busy. That's how you can tell this is a popular food joint. Parking on the other hand is terrible but I can deal. I ordered the #20 Turkey which came with lettuce, tomato, provolone cheese with Italian dressing. I added Mayo, cucumber & banana peppers. I also got a peanut butter cookie which tasted homemade and had peanut butter chips in it and it was DELICIOUS! I will probably go back again and will definitely order for pick up and get the peanut butter cookies also.

Kev G.

Yelp
Was planning on ordering but went in got a menu and looked around and not one person in the kitchen was wearing gloves! I don't care how clean it is, or how many reviews you have, you NEED to be wearing gloves when making people's food, that's health 101.

Stephen M.

Yelp
What a great place. Food is amazing. Service was prompt it's a bit of a throwback to an "old school" sandwich shop. This was our first visit, but won't be our last.
google avatar

Susan G.

Yelp
Today I brought the lunch staff here to eat. If you are unfamiliar with the area, this is actually a pretty wonderful place to start. They serve enormous sandwiches. Their cookies are excellent and very fresh. We ordered the southwest cheesesteak sandwich, a meatball sub, and grilled chicken sandwiches. All were items that we would obtain once more. This restaurant will deliver, but it's a good idea to order ahead and pick it up in case the line is lengthy. Visit this location right away to see it.

Aaron C.

Yelp
Recently went in and got a sub, chips and drink to go. Got my food home and discovered that the corner of my chip bag had a big hole chewed in it from a rodent. Gross. Threw all of my food in the trash. I will never return

David J.

Yelp
The food is good, I tried the pastrami sandwich and it was tasty, service was quick and good, excellent place to have a bite if you are in the area

Yelp
I recently started working within a mile of this place and finally decided to look them up after driving past and being curious. The menu alone is tempting. They've got a variety of subs, both hot and cold, as well as wraps, pasta, burgers, and other deli items. The prices are also exceptionally fair. While it's not cheap, Bella Donna has managed to control costs to keep the prices comparable to a lot of other places with less impressive food. And despite having a huge menu and long lines, you can easily eat here (and probably have time to spare) during your lunch hour. I've been two days in a row and tried two different dishes. I've had spaghetti and meatballs as well as their chicken parmesan sub. Both show a mastery of marinara sauce, melted mozzarella, and bread that many Italian restaurants in Austin could learn from. When I had the sub, I upgraded to a combo with chips, a drink, and a homemade cookie. The chocolate chip cookie was the perfect finale to lunch. This is definitely in the lunch rotation for me and with the scope of their menu, I won't get bored with it.

Yelp
I was very excited to find this gem! It's tucked away off of Ben White near a lot of the warehouses along that area. I was craving a hot delicious sandwich, which is exactly what I got. I parked along the side of the building and ordered a meatball sandwich at the counter. This place was bumping on a Friday at 1PM. My sandwich came out in less than ten minutes. And man, it was delicious! No frills, nothing fancy. Just a hot perfect meatball sandwich. I scarfed it down in less time than it took to make it. I like that the sandwich isn't over-the-top huge, and the bread is perfection. I absolutely will return for another tasty morsel in the future!

S K.

Yelp
Absolutely the best meatball sub I've had! Totally delicious, superb quality of sauce & meatballs with a slightly toasted roll that was soft inside and a bit crisp outside...perfect! Generous amounts of everything including the cheese. Had some chicken parm sub too..excellent! Very friendly staff ; WONDERFUL Full menu & price was right for this quality. Highly recommend a visit there. I'm from Boston but make it a point to go there when I'm there...

J E.

Yelp
Great food. Great people. Great location. Unreal menu! Need a good Ruben!? BELLA IS THE PLACE!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
The sandwiches are delicious and if you go around lunchtime, you will see that by the amount of people in the restaurant! Even with so many people they are very quick, and the food is always consistent. Definitely try the tortilla soup with your neck sandwich. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Food is amazing. At first glance you'd drive on by. But man o man is the food worth the stop.

Yelp
Super cheap spot for lunch in the middle of an industrial park of sorts. A sandwich combo will run you less than $9 (fountain soda, chips, AND a cookie). Classic sub shop look and feel. I got the pastrami to go. By the time I got home, maybe 20 minutes later, the bottom slice of bread on each half was a soggy goner. The sandwich is called Yenta's Over Stuffed Pastrami and the bread was clearly no match for the slabs of Yenta's beautiful meat paired with that Russian dressing (you could substitute for mustard instead). I wasn't mad at it, but maybe next time would eat it on the spot so I can experience the full sandwich vibe. Friendly, lots of tables inside with the nearby workforce coming in and out, and a TV playing something nostalgic.

Mike P.

Yelp
I have a half hour for lunch. I went in and ordered really fast. but I waited a half hour while the cooks laughed at me and moved my ticket down the line and made people's food who ordered after me in line. they didn't start making the sandwich until after I was asking for my money back. I know I'm not welcome there and I will never go back.
google avatar

Kaytlen P.

Yelp
Just tried this place for the first time... we will def be back! I got a cold turkey sub and added mustard/mayo. My partner got a footlong Italian sub. They were both excellent, especially with the homemade Italian dressing! We also got the combos (drink, chips, and a cookie); the peanut butter cookie is seriously one of the best I've had! Everything is fresh and seems high quality.
google avatar

Kate H.

Yelp
Rueben sandwich was so good. It is a bit greasy but worth it. We got food Togo and quality was still really good.

Neil S.

Yelp
Super busy. Popular lunch spot.. Don't expect things to go quickly during peak hours. Good sandwiches for sure. Special trip for me to get Italian beef sandwich, but the have a little jalapeño kick. Worth the drive.
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
Just waited 30 minutes for 2 $5 hotdogs that only had sauerkraut on them. The pushcart hotdog has ALWAYS been really good but after today idk if i'll ever go back. Disrespectful to charge me $ for that
google avatar

Izzy M.

Yelp
My company ordered lunch for us and since I don't eat meat, I went for the veggie cheeseburger. To my surprise, I received a veggie cheeseburger with bacon on it. Not sure if this is in their recipe for a vegetarian sandwich, but very disappointed with their service.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Quality, delicious, and big sub sandwiches. It's a hole in the wall but don't let that fool you. It gives it a charm. The staff were super kind. I recommend Bella Donna subs.
google avatar

Sydney S.

Yelp
I went here recently and ohhhh myyy lordddy. The Italian sub was to die for, it was so yummy! The menu is huge and I'm eager to try more things in the future. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
Talk about a diamond in the rough. This sandwich shop is hiding on the southeast side in a strip mall that makes you wonder if anything is still open. Bella Donna's exclusive hours may also lead one to believe this sub shop is closed, but have no fear: they are still around making magical subs! Our go to order is the Italian Beef and the Super Italian (#16), and they are both amazing. The Italian Beef transports you to the Windy City, just be sure to ask for an extra side of the au jus for your sandwich drowning or dipping pleasure. The Super Italian is super yummy as well, piled high with Italian meats, provolone cheese, and a seriously complimentary homemade Italian dressing. Insider tip: a dollar off for new customers if you let them know it's your first time in!
google avatar

Jimmy S.

Yelp
I'm not sure how Bella Donna has received such high marks. I called in for a foot-long cheesesteak and what I received was a 6 inch cheesesteak where the cheese was barely melted, the meat was overcooked or freezer burned, and the bread was stale. In addition, when I stepped up to the counter to pay for my call-in order, the cashier handed me the sandwich then took three phone orders prior to taking payment. I will not be returning.

Yelp
This review is for the Eggplant Parmesan, which was good, but could have been a bit better. The eggplant was sliced nice and thin, had great flavor, but had mushy breading. The breading yo eggplant ratio was good, but it wasn't crispy like I've had at other places. The sauce and cheese were superb, but I was really surprised by how delicious the whole wheat hero roll was! I don't know what bread they're using, but it was very fresh and soft. I liked the option to get a combo upgrade for $2 more, which came with a small fountain drink, bag of chips, and a homemade chocolate chip cookie. You can get the upgrade on Mondays and Tuesdays for only $1! I love that they have Big Red on tap. They have a really extensive selection of NY style hot and cold subs, wraps abs hot dogs, so there's something for everyone. I'd like to see them add a gluten-free option. There are also burgers and a veggie burger!
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
It is close to my office. We order at least once a week for delivery usually. Everything is great! From the subs, burgers, salads, and Frito pie. You heard me yes Frito pie, at a sub shop. There is no parking so arrive early if you eat in. I

Miss P.

Yelp
the entire menu, is fantastic! i have not had an unpleasant experience with any of the menu items.
google avatar

Nichole E.

Yelp
I thankfully work right down the street from Bella Donna's and frequent them for lunch. They have an extensive menu and I haven't had anything I didn't like yet. My favorites are their muffaleta, blt (it has avocado on it) and their Italian wrap on a spinach tortilla. The cheesesteak is also good, pretty messy though. They also have a decent antipasta salad and are not stingy with their dressing, speaking of which, their Italian dressing is great on everything! My drawbacks are the lack of consistency with the way the sandwiches are sloppily made sometimes, the utter lack of parking, which I get, they're popular, and the fact that they aren't open on the weekends.

Gregory M.

Yelp
Great place! If you are looking for good food a a good price I recommend it. Large menu, fresh ingredients and great taste. It's a hole in the wall and not the cleanest but worth it!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
Just awesome. A friend took me here for lunch, as it wasn't too far from his office. I don't get out this way much, and the outside and surrounding area looks pretty run down. The inside was nothing special either, but then -oh, the food!! One of the best sandwiches I've had in Austin. The friendly staff behind the counter took my order for the Uncle Ira's Reuben, and it came out delicious and perfect in every way. Tender, flavorful corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and wonderfully grilled rye. I could tell right away that it was a multi-napkin affair. My friend got the pastrami burger, and it looked like a deli dream. I can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu (especially with some of the other Yelp reviews). I'm so glad I was introduced to this gem!
