The Best Coffee Shops and Cafes in Bend, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Beginning in 2003, Bellatazza has been one of the oldest roasters in town. It’s located on Wall Street, smack in the center of downtown at the breezeway that leads to Mirror Pond, making it a great place to people-watch. The coffee is a medium roast to bring out the flavors of direct-trade beans that owner Stewart Fritchman imports from Guatemala. While the housemade empanadas are a nod to his time spent there, their fillings go beyond Latin flavors to include variations from around the world, such as Indian lentils or New Mexican fire-roasted chile pork, all served with a yogurt-cilantro dipping sauce. Paninis are made in advance and generously layered with beautiful combinations of ingredients like creamy brie, fig, and prosciutto. Choose from many coffees but feel utterly pampered by ordering the cortado served with water to cleanse the palate and a piece of Toblerone to satisfy a sweet tooth." - Barb Gonzalez

- We went at around 11:30 AM on a Monday and it was mostly empty (which was great for us!). Plenty of seating inside and outside. - Smiling, upbeat workers who seemed to enjoy working and engaging with guests. - The food was all great! We got a scone, empanadas, and a breakfast sandwich. The hot food was the perfect temperature and appeared freshly prepared. The scone was loved by my girlfriend although I would have liked more berries in it, but it was huge! We had enough to take home and enjoy later too. - I loved the fact that the syrups are locally made. I believe the shop makes some themselves while others are locally-sourced. That really elevated the experience and was a welcome surprise. - Nice atmosphere that wasn't too loud when we went. I enjoyed the fun, indie music that was playing (which is usual in coffee shops I suppose). - When we went, street parking was available but, again, it was Monday around 11:30 so not really a peak-time. - Appeared to really support local businesses and events. Had a bulliten board in the back with posters from various concerts and events happening around town. Feedback: - I forgot to take pictures of it myself, but posting updated pictures/listing their menu online would be helpful. We picked the place based on it's online reviews but would have preferred to know more about the menu before arriving to ensure there were things we could both eat. (Diet-wise and taste-preference.) - It can be harder to find because it's tucked back from the street a little but once we rounded the corner it was easy to spot.

Coffee is very good. 5 Stars Scone seemed to be several days old, very dry and tasteless. Would have returned it, but did not find this out until I was far enough away that I couldn’t go back. Do better Bellatazza. 1 Star

Best espresso in Bend. And the best price. The espresso is excellent plain, not overly acidic, just good and bitter, yet balanced. And it doesn’t lose its character once I add milk. That’s how I know it’s of great quality. My order is a double espresso, on ice, with a splash of milk. Perfection. My new go to for sure!

Great spot for coffee pickup while walking around downtown Bend. Had an iced americano and was great.

This place is the heart of the community! The owner is an absolute champion. The coffee is stellar and I’m a total coffee snob. What really shocked me is how amazing his empanadas were!! He makes them by hand daily and they were some of the best empanadas I’ve ever had and I used to live in Latin America. Don’t miss out on this gem! Plus it’s in the heart of downtown! What more can you ask for??!!

My favorite coffee place in town. Always consistent. Coffee taste always has depth. Coffee bean selection is always abundant.

Nice little cafe with good coffee and so-so Empanadas. The Empanadas were a little doughy and soft for our taste. They throw them in the microwave before giving them to you. We ordered the cream cheese and jalapeño and the Chili carnitas which was very meaty and much better. The sigh board outside was speaking truth so we had to come in.

When in Bend go for a doppio treat and why not get one of each? The dark is rich with deep flavors all the way through. My favorite though? The really fresh and earthy light roast. Enjoy! A special thank you to Keely for the tour :)
