Dr. Bellemore herself was very kind and courteous. She was transparent about what she was addressing regarding my eyes and included me in the discussion.
My issue lies with those who were performing the preliminary tests. Firstly, the machines didn't appear to be sanitized before my use - and if they were, I was not told so. I was also not told what the tests were for; I understand as a long time patient of this clinic that I have underwent these tests in the past, but being clued in and transparent with what exactly the tests are for is something I would appreciate, especially as an undergraduate considering a career in optometry.
The biggest issue of my visit was during the capturing of my retinal photos. From what I could surmise (as the workers running the machine didn't explicitly tell me), the photos were coming out blurry, likely because I couldn't keep my eyes open wide enough. The lady assisting me reached over the machine, to which I thought she was adjusting it. Instead, she held my eyelids open herself with her bare hands??? I understand that these photos need to come out clearly - I am not contesting that. The issue I had is that I did not give her consent to perform this action, especially since I didn't see her wash her hands nor sanitize them when she entered the room. If she told me beforehand what she was doing, or even if i could do it myself I would have given her the go-ahead. Instead, I was caught completely off guard and couldn't do much except allow for the pictures to be completed. This isn't professional behavior.
There are obviously steps that need to be taken to improve the quality of care at this clinic. I hope to see improvements from the staff in the future.
