Although it's been hot like summer, the fall atmosphere made me want to pick some fresh apples. I did a quick google search and found out that Bella Farm was relatively close to my place, and they were having an "Ugly Apple" sale. Intrigued, I grabbed my basket and headed out.
Upon arrival, I noticed there were quite a few people there with the amount of cars in the lot. I grabbed my basket and walked over to the red barn, and a friendly man greeted me and explained the layout and pricing to me. Basically, all of the apples have blemishes on them, caused by the long/wet spring rains this year, but are perfectly safe to eat; hence the ugly apple sale.
Everything in the farm was well maintained and it was easy to walk around. Apple varieties were clearly marked so there was no confusion about which variety you were picking. However, since it was already late in season, most of the FUJI apples already fell to the ground.
A little bit of my background... my mom used to purchase blemished fruit from fruit stalls to make (a lot of) fresh juice when I was a kid, so I am not a stranger to ugly fruit and am kinda fond of them~
I quickly turned and inspected the apples on the ground for bruises and/or worm holes. Also, I tested the firmness of the apples by gently pinching the fruit. When I was satisfied with what I see/feel, I put them into my basket~~
I quickly picked a basket full of apples and went to pay. It turned out my ugly apple bounty only cost me $3 dollars! What a bargain!
You might ask about the taste? Well, the Fuji apples tasted so fresh and delicious, I questioned why I don't eat more apples more often!
There's also a picnic area and a play structure for families, and it's under some shade. I saw many families take advantage of that area and thought it'd be a fun day trip for the entire family :)
