Cheesemakers Across Virginia Are Using Dairy Proceeds to Raise Money for Black Farmers | Eater DC

"In Richmond, Belmont Butchery's cheesemonger Sara Adduci will give SAAFON 100 percent of proceeds from sales of its Jùscht, a tender, rich, raw cow’s milk cheese from Switzerland." - Stephanie Ganz

Google
Great old fashioned little shop with high quality meats. They even have the hard to find Studley Farms brand of jerky! They also have cheeses I've never heard of before. Fill of surprises for discriminating tastes

Google
I think this is a family owned butchery. This was my first visit here. I have been searching all over Richmond for turkey giblets that I could buy without the rest of the turkey. They have this product! I was so happy. I needed the giblets to be cooked to use with broth and other ingredients for my Thanksgiving oyster dressing. It's a German version of the dressing that uses oyster crackers. The dressing was great. Thank you Belmont butchery!

Having to put my bestest buddy in the whole wide world down after this weekend and went to Belmont Butcher to get him one of his favorites, a knuckle bone. They’ve always been so awesome, and they gave my boy his last bone on the house . He’s absolutely loving it ❤️thank you guys , the gesture meant the world to us

Google
But her was very helpful with choosing the cuts of meat. I wanted Dino beef ribs so he the butcher went to the fridge to get done that had not been cut. The cashier also gave me some great tips on braising the pork shanks that I bought.

Google
Hands down one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. A thick, grass-fed bone-in ribeye, about an inch and a half, rested and then seared in cast iron with fresh garlic, thyme, and rosemary straight from the garden. Finished off with Irish butter, it was tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The kind of meal that makes you stop after the first bite and just say, “Wow.” Absolutely delicious—yes please and thank you

Google
We have been searching for an old school type butcher shop since moving to Virginia. We have found some great farm fresh meat but have yet to find a place that has a great selection all the time. As we were on our way to a chain that has fantastic prime meat we came across Belmont Butchery. This is the old school feel we were seeking! Thrilled to see the selection of accompaniments such as butters and cheese. Our first items were some chicken breasts for a pasta dish and two pasture raised, aged filets. The quality and flavor is far beyond what we have been getting at the big box! The beef was tied and packed properly and the pricing was on point! We will be back again soon!

Google
The only place I’ve found Guanciale in Richmond. Was very tasty, was spot on for flavor. Made a absolutely banging carbonara with it that tasted just like what I’ve had in Italy! Will be back!! Staff was friendly and accommodating.

I love the steak options here. Owner was out front on my last visit and walked me through the selections. Great service from a knowledgeable team, I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Belmont Butchery is an amazing little old-time butcher shop. Old time because of fresh quality meats that are cut to order. Take one look at the mouth-watering meats in the refrigerated glass case and you will find it difficult to choose. One can't find quality like this anywhere else. Belmont Butchery offers a great section of wines and cheese to complement your entrees. There are many great selections and you will definitely be more than satisfied with the high quality, flavor and value of your purchase. The service here is friendly, helpful and consistently sensational! It is important to stop by often so that you don't miss out on some of the unique specialty items (made on site) that are not always available. Liverwurst is my wife's favorite. She said that it takes her back when her grandfather (from Germany) used to make it for her. I noticed that Belmont has a section of exotic meats available. I highly recommend Belmont Butchery! You will love it!

Yelp
A hidden gem in the middle of Richmond, Tanya has the best selection and cuts of high quality meats, lamb and poultry. She took her time guiding us with her knowledge and expertise! The place was packed. Very knowledgeable and courteous staff! We're not buying from big stores anymore. You can order online and it'll be ready for you. Prices are very competitive. I cooked my 1" Ribeye to perfection and added chimichurri. Better than Ruth Chris!

Yelp
Make sure to double check your bill here, because I trust them about as far as I could toss a full-grown cow in mud boots.

Yelp
The best local butcher with the freshest meats! Tanya the owner is amazing and the whole staff is always friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. They promote "nose-to-tail" eating -- meaning they use all the edible parts of the animal. I love that they cut the meat fresh for you and it is cut by thickness not weight. They take the time to ask you how you are preparing your meal so they give you an appropriate cut. In addition to steaks, chops, roasts they have sausage ( in incredible unique flavors) bacon, pate and the list goes on (note comment above- whole animal) They also have a great assortment of cheeses, a nice wine section and assorted other provisions. The shop is very cozy overall!

Yelp
Great quality product and service. Been coming here for years and will definitely continue.

Yelp
Belmont Butchery has an amazing range of available meets. Everyone I've dealt with has been most accommodating, pleasant and helpful. I'm new to smoking meats and at the price I can't afford too many mistakes and Belmont Butchery has been great. Mitch spent a substantial amount of time explaining different cuts of pork and had good advice for smoking. I also smoked a Belmont Butchery brisket a couple months ago and it was equally wonderful.

Yelp
We discovered this place via a search for a butcher. We are so glad we found it. We came here and pickup some thick steaks.... amazing!!! Picked up some pounds of INFERNO SAUSAGE..... loved it! If you love sausage, flavor, and spiciness.... you will love their Inferno Sausage. I hope they never stop making. We come and pickup as much as we can whenever they make it and is available. Aside from Sausage we picked up some other meats, sausages, rabbit spread (butter like), and a few other items. I recommend this butcher shop to all. Please come and give them a try!!!

Yelp
Half a dozen employees in white aprons whisk unwieldy slabs of raw meat across the small shop as the bouncy beats of Modest Mouse play in the background. Before I can fully take in the ambience of Belmont Butchery, owner Tanya Cauthen greets me and begins to answer all the questions I didn't yet know I had. In the Museum District, Belmont Butchery has offered hand-cut meats and sliced-to-order charcuterie, plus house-made bacon, pâtés and sausages for nearly 13 years. And beyond the meat, the small storefront functions as a gourmand's minimart, featuring a vast selection of wines, cheeses, condiments and other items to nosh and nibble on. Whether she's sharing product origins or giving customers a lesson from Meats 101, Cauthen doesn't just explain Belmont's selection, she narrates the history of the butchery's products as if they were her children. "At the end of the day it's all about carrying the stuff that we like," Cauthen says. "Why carry things you yourself don't want to eat?" Customers' willingness to explore has allowed Belmont to become the first retail location for local small batch, artisanal brands such as KimKim Korean Hot Sauce, Olli Salumeria and Jerk Central's Jamaican seasonings and rubs. At times, Cauthen's dedication to local delicacies has turned the butchery into something of an incubator. The first six months after launching the business, Jerk Central prepared, packaged and sold all of its goods via Belmont's storefront. "The moment you can buy one of these products at the grocery store we don't carry it anymore," adds Cauthen with a clear tone of pride. All but one of Belmont's staff are former chefs, bringing a depth of knowledge that you won't find in your average grocery store. Daunted by the wide variety of specialty cuts and gourmet goods, many customers reach the counter wide-eyed and uncertain how or what to order. The experts behind the counter function like meat bartenders: Customers tell them what they're thinking and staffers help them balance preferences on pairings, cost and place of origin in order to choose the perfect cut. Beyond assisting customers with purchases, Belmont's staff also offers recipe ideas and suggestions for meal planning. "Not only are most of us chefs, we also cook all these products at home," Cauthen explains. "We're always giving out recipes and writing them on butcher paper. We just share what we want to eat when we talk food." For those not in the know, the realm of rump steaks and ribs can prove to be full of bravado and machismo, as few things in history are considered more manly than a large slab of raw meat. But according to Cauthen, many loyal customers attribute the accessible approach of Belmont Butchery to the fact that it is a business owned and led by a woman. Cauthen studied engineering before working in Switzerland as a traveling handywoman, so when it comes to navigating a male-dominated field, this isn't her first ride. In the 13 years she's owned Belmont Butchery, she's grown used to customers approaching the biggest, oldest male in the shop -- usually her husband -- to ask for assistance. She smirks as she recalls the look of surprise, and sometimes embarrassment, that can wash over a customer's face when her husband or another male employee directs them to Belmont's master butcher. Molly Ellis, the shop's resident cheesemonger, knows the feeling. As one of only two other women who work the counter, she knows what it's like to have her expertise questioned. Despite what some customers may assume based on her small stature, youthful face and demure professionalism, Ellis has spent years working in restaurants, as a cheese distributor in Northern Virginia and now as one of Richmond's top curd connoisseurs at Belmont Butchery. A few years ago when nearly the whole staff was female, Ellis recalls people were often surprised by the lack of testosterone. Far from letting the micro-aggressions of unconscious sexism bother her, Ellis simply found it amusing. "I didn't get it," she says. "Women eat meat too. At the end of the day, we just love food." What may seem like a random assortment of dairy to the untrained eye often holds a hidden message for customers. Last month, Ellis stocked Belmont's cheese case with varieties from across the East Coast to honor her favorites ahead of the 2019 conference of the American Cheese Society, which came to Richmond last week. Events included a cheese crawl, book signings, taste tests, regional farm tours and even a Cheeseletes 5K. For those who missed the conference, Belmont Butchery is the next best thing. As with the top-notch meats, Ellis is happy to guide customers trying to balance origin, quality and price to find the right item for them. Much like her boss, she takes pride in her products and hopes to pass that same passion. "If I wouldn't have it in my fridge, then it's not gonna be on our shelves." styleweekly.com/richmond/ladies-of-the-loin/Content?oid=14942611

Yelp
We haven't been to a butcher since we left our hometown. This was a surprise! All of this meat was so good. We put it in the smoker and felt like we were eating actual fresh meat again. Their customer service was awesome. Even though their was a line. They didn't rush us. Explained everything thoroughly for us to make a decision. There is a 3 person max in a the building. So there might be a line on the weekends.

Yelp
If you watch food shows, if you love good meat and cheese and wine, if you value real food prepared with love by other people, local people, who also love and care about food, its origins, its preparation, its quality, its ability to be a form of art, then you MUST visit, patronize, experience this shop. Family owned, family run. For this boy who grew up in a butcher shop in NC, this was like a trip back in time, a trip home. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

Yelp
Honestly, these were the most expensive meats and cheeses I've seen since coming to Virginia. I like a good steak and am willing to pay for good cheese as well as support local business, but I couldn't even justify a single purchase.

Yelp
Was really excited to make my first purchase from a local butcher but was really dissapointed when I opened my cut of meat. I purchased some porkbelly and I knew it was going to be fatty but with the price that I had paid for l wasnt expecting it to be 80% fat and 20% meat. Dont think ill be going back again

Yelp
This is an amazing and charming butcher shop. I'm especially pleased with the cheese selection as they offer raw milk cheeses. The raw milk Shelbourne cheddar somehow tastes like a cheeseburger without the meat. The Rogue River Bleu cheese was so unctuous that mixed with a lovely Chardonnay made my breath smell worse than the cats (according to my 15 year old daughter) so you know it must be good. I haven't tried the lamb bacon yet but I'm hoping it will taste like bacon with a little barnyard mixed in. Edit: the lamb bacon was amazing! I didn't know that bacon could taste better than bacon but this bacon does.

Yelp
Staying safe, only 2 people are allowed in at one time. It's recommended that you order ahead and pick up. But we'd never been in before so it was nice to take a brief peak at what they offered. We finally found a tomahawk steak with the bone still in! We got the last one of the day! I also got sea salt butter and some mini cookies in a small container, perfect for a gift.

Yelp
Belmont Butchery is truly a Richmond gem! They offer an excellent selection of mouth watering cuts of meats, sausages, and charcuterie. I am a really adventurous eater and I'm glad that they also offer all sorts of odds and ends that you usually don't find in a typical supermarket. There is also a selection of cheeses, local bread, and other items to accompany the meats. Service is amazing here from start to finish. They warmly great you when you approach the counter and if you have any questions or ask for suggestions, they happily help you. Even though the shop is pretty small and can get a little busy, I have never felt rushed. Next time you're looking for something truly special to try or cook up, skip the big markets and check out Belmont Butchery!

Yelp
Got a few steaks from here today- so so good. One of the best pieces of meat I've had since living in Richmond, will definitely be coming back!! Employees are also super sweet and helpful!

Yelp
I am a longtime customer but for whatever reason neglected to review previously. So let me correct my oversight by summing up all visits in a single shout -- Richmond is very lucky to have Tanya Cauthen and her crew. Over the years we have had Belmont's bacon, merguez, pork chops, lamb, chickens, steaks, pate, and charcuterie. I have bought briskets through her and smoked them, and the goddess only knows how much cheese and wine. Not only does Tanya know everything about meat, she is intimately familiar with the specific cow or pig or whatever you are buying because odds are she just got through breaking it down in the back room. Belmont can make very helpful suggestions on preparation or tell you about the farm or supplier they are using. You can sample the house-made salamis and pates, all of which are unbelievably indulgent and happy-making. On our most recent trip we bought lamb bacon and charcuterie and pate and several cheeses for dinner, along with a local good crusty bread. Amazing stuff, and not as expensive as you'd fear, considering Tanya is to my knowledge the only custom butcher open to the general public in the entire metro area. We also bought house made scrapple -- neither Wife nor I have ever eaten it in our 50 plus years with Tanya's reassurance we bought it on faith. We also noted that she has fresh lamb, beef, and chicken stock in the cold case. My wife makes her own chicken and beef stock from scratch, but we will certainly return to Tanya for lamb stock when needed. Finally, I cannot close without pointing out that Tanya is also one hell of a cook. She won her episode of Chopped on Food Network (broadcast May 2017) with some creative and impressive dishes -- congrats to her! So trust this lady and her crew -- everyone talks about farm to table, but Tanya can literally take an animal from the field, prep it, cook it, and serve an award winning feast. She can help you with dinner too. Five stars.

Yelp
Well, now I can say I've been to a real butcher shop! My dad has been really into cooking lately and since our family has been focusing on gifting experiences rather than gifts, I decided to get him something he can really use: meat! I'd heard so many great things about this place, so I was excited to check it out. What I didn't know was apparently everyone else in Richmond knows how good this place is also! Holy struggle city batman. The place was filled to the brim with folks getting their holiday provisions. All of their meats looks amazing and put everything you would find in the grocery store to shame. Because there was too much to choose from, I ended up just getting a gift card so that he can come back on his own time and choose the meats he really wants. I just hope that they invite us over for dinner when they make it so we can taste the Belmont Butchery difference!

Yelp
Belmont Butchery brings me to my happy place, as my form of comfort food tends to involve fresh baguette with some form of charcuterie. For some reason, searching "charcuterie" in Richmond got me nowhere on Yelp, so it was only a few weeks ago that I heard through word of mouth about this wonderful oasis of meat. So, for those hopelessly searching for pork mousse with porcini mushrooms or house pate, this should wake up the Yelp search engine: CHARCUTERIE CHARCUTERIE CHARCUTERIE CHARCUTERIE!!! My roommate and I planned a post-exam party solely to try more food from Belmont Butchery, and if I do say so myself, it was quite a hit. It's rare at a party of students to see everyone standing around the table of food instead of the booze, and this happened solely due to the magical meat and offal creations from my new favorite place in Richmond. The people who work here are incredibly knowledgeable about meat, and are also very friendly and helpful. We wanted to get a great spread within a budget for about 15-20 people, and our guy totally delivered. He stayed way within, if not under budget, and put together a tasting that had variety in flavor, texture, and was altogether delicious. Everything was amazing, but I was particularly enamored with the Pate Maison (house pate with pork and pork liver), the Pork Mousse (with little dots of porcini mushrooms!), the coppa (wildly flavorful!), pancetta, and of course my hometown favorite, Fra'Mani salame from San Francisco. I sometimes tend to bash Richmond a little too much in my reviews, which is sad because this city grows on me more and more each day. Sure, it's not home, but there is a growing list of things to love about it. Belmont Butchery completely encompasses everything that is awesome about the Fan, and I will definitely miss it when I move back to the Bay Area. Thankfully, this place *isn't* in SF because the service would probably suck (nothing hurts more than being talked down to about food by a bored hipster), and it'd be crawling with hungry foodies taking photos and trying to out-foodie each other, all the while getting in the way of my meat eating. I love you, Belmont Butchery, and will be back soon. xoxo.

Yelp
This place was smaller than I anticipated, but I was still amazed at the offerings. The quality of all the products looked outstanding! I was looking for some quality pork for a Chinese stew for a potluck dinner on Thursday night, and you can't buy the kind of meat I'm looking for by-the-pound at Kroger. I used to get my meat for Chinese food at 99 Ranch, but that chain doesn't exist here. I had heard about Belmont Butchery so I decided to check it out. I stupidly pushed on the door thinking that it was a simple hinge, only to realize that there was a doorknob. Oops! However, as soon as I walked in the door, I was greeted by the employees. After peering at the selection in the glass case, I was asked whether I needed any help. I told the guy that I was looking for some pork (preferably with a little fat) for a stew, and he suggested some pork shoulder. I asked for three pounds, and he even offered to cut it up into small chunks for me! I happily obliged, and was touched (as much as you can be touched by meat and a butcher) that he cut it by hand and not by machine. He double-wrapped my bundle of meat, and hand-labeled it "pork butt" with a Sharpie (FYI: it's called butt but it's shoulder meat). I was also pleasantly surprised to see Mexican Coke for sale! That's one of my secret ingredients for this stew, but I had been using boring American Coke all year since I had not found Mexican Coke anywhere. Finding top-notch pork AND Mexican Coke kicked up my excitement level several-fold. =) My meat cost about $15, which is certainly not cheap, but when I got home to cook and opened the package, the smell and overall appearance of the meat just emanated freshness. I could not have been more satisfied! I can't wait to come back and explore this store more thoroughly when I have the time, and maybe even get a little adventurous (e.g. I noticed some rabbit for sale...).

Yelp
So thankful for a great community butcher like Belmont! I picked up a 6-lb pork butt sourced from a local farm in VA. Using a recipe from my good friend (a personal trainer and talented chef), I made the most delicious smoke-flavored pulled pork dish. It was a big hit with the family and neighbors! Big thanks to Belmont for the quality pork butt!

Yelp
If you like to shop locally and get to know your neighborhood butcher, this is the place for you. Everyone on the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and they are happy to make recommendations on cuts of meat. In fact, if you decide to purchase something you've never cooked before, never fear- the staff will tell you how to cook it. They cut based on thickness, not necessarily weight, so when you go in and order two steaks, expect to give them an estimate of size (one finger thick, two fingers thick, etc.) I particularly love the assortment of hard to find items- rabbit, buffalo, venison, plus house-made pates and mozzarella cheese. But of course, they also have fresh, perfectly marbled cuts of beef and succulent pork, and chicken, plus half a case of dried meats (proscuitto, soppressato, chorizo, and all sorts of treats to make Italian girls like me drool) and they even do some dry aging of certain meats (steaks mostly) as well. Their cases are a feast for the eyes. They also have a slammin' cheese case, a rack of wines, and fresh bread and desserts from a local baker. My personal favorite thing to do is to come here when I have company and get an assortment of dried meats (butchers choice) plus some fresh mozzarella, some tasty wine, and a baguette, and make an antipasto as an appetizer. I only gave it four stars because this place is not cheap- if it were a little more reasonable, I'd like to shop here on a regular basis... but it's great quality, and they have plenty of affordably priced items, so even those of us on a tight budget can afford to shop here from time to time...

Yelp
Looks like a great collection of meats and cheeses, the prices are a little too high for myself but the quality looks really good

Yelp
I'm really surprised by how much quality they managed to pack in this small shop. I was in town for a BBQ and could not resist stopping by the Belmont Butchery. They've got great cuts of local meat...I went for the ribeye. They cut the steaks fresh from roast based on thickness not weight. We got steaks cut to 1" per person and it was MORE than enough for each of us. The marbling on that ribeye could make a meat lover cry. Off the grill, it was one of the best rib eyes that I have ever drooled over. They also had guanciale(!) which is cured pork jowl or cheek (read: fauncy Italian bacon yo). I have only seen this stuff on Chopped so it was so pretty cool to see such unique cuts here. You could really get everything for a great meal or BBQ here....greens or cheese and charcuterie for an appetizer, fine cuts of meat, a couple of bottles of wine, and bacon for breakfast the next morning (or as soon as possible if you're like me).

Yelp
As someone who is really nervous about COVID-19 and skeptical about going anywhere to pick up anything, I found that the Belmont Butchery made it extremely safe and easy to acquire a few phenomenal cuts of meat. With phone-only ordering and payment, next-day curbside-only pickup, and packaged in vacuum-sealed plastic (so I can ease my mind by resanitizing), they have really thought of everything to keep customers and workers as safe as possible. This experience has made life-long customers of me and my boyfriend.

Yelp
If you are looking for a specialty butcher shop in Richmond, look no further than Belmont. It's a small operation focused on customer service. They will hand cut any beef or pork cut you are looking for, always have a great selection of steaks, cure their own hams, and carry a nice selection of Italian and Spanish cured meats. If you want something special (we like to get whole fresh pork hocks for Schweinshaxe), simply call a few days ahead and get it reserved for you. The owner / head butcher will go out of her way to help you select the right cut of meat based on what you want to prepare. We love this place.

Yelp
This place deserves its many five-star ratings! Absolutely worth the drive! Incredible selection of hard-to-find meats and other things to make a foodie drool. Staff is personable and friendly. Love it!

Yelp
I am so incredibly impressed with this business I went once for some chicken necks and feet to make a stock a couple years ago and have been going back ever since whenever I need a specific cut or meat and today they really went above and beyond I had a small issue with a cut of meat I got and they replaced and were incredibly easy and courteous to deal with and overall would definitely recommend this local business for your meat and cheese needs

Tyler P.

Yelp
Went in there just to check it out, the guy working the counter was super knowledgeable of his product and even gave me the low down on special delivery days and everything. Steaks and even the chicken were absolutely premium. Will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
If you want good meat, this is a great place to be. It has surprisingly good selection, considering the small size of the store. We picked up a variety of sausages for dinner. They were all tasty. Service was great. They were quite happy to walk us through their selection. Good people.

Spike P.

Yelp
This used to be our go to place for steaks. Not anymore. The owner has gone overboard with COVID procedures. Long waits to get inside, being rushed to get back outside, and employees that spend more time telling us where to stand and wiping surfaces than serving customers.

Yelp
Looking for a local and well-respected establishment that delivers excellent customer service and sells locally-raised, quality meats? = Belmont Butchery, to the rescue! Shouting from the rooftops: this place is AWESOME! Tanya and Henry are the most gracious couple and no matter how busy they are, they truly take the time to get to know you and make you feel as if you're their most important customer. It's truly a carnivorous dream that includes: house-made sausages, charcuterie heaven (prosciutto, I'm eyeing you), dried chorizo, salamis, pates, and I can go on and on. I still have yet to buy actual meat from Belmont to be prepared as I desire at home, but you can bet your brisket that I'll be here when I finally get around to whipping up that osso buco recipe I've been meaning to try. Not a meat lover? No problem, you can indulge in their selection of artisan cheeses, wines, ciders, beers, sometimes produce (onions and potatoes), local Richmond vendors which seem to rotate frequently, and various items to accompany your dinner party (crackers, spreads, olives, etc.). A+ for customer service: an employee called me on a Saturday an hour before they closed to check if I was still planning to pick up my order since they're closed on Sundays - how thoughtful! I'm counting my lucky stars that Richmond has a true butcher shop. Thank you, Tanya and Henry, for pouring your hearts into such a gem of a place.

Yelp
Me, a pescatarian, writing a review about a butchery. Pretty weird, eh? Well I happen to live with a meat-eating, bacon-loving man so I decided I needed to check this place out after hearing its praises time and time again. Of course I walked in without a clue about how to even order bacon. By the strip? By the pound? Luckily, the dude at the counter was helpful and suggested how much to order once I told him I just wanted enough for a few breakfasts for one person. The reason I think this place is so cool is that they offer such unique bacon flavors. It's not just any old bacon - it's maple bacon and herbs bacon and flavorful combinations that you probably won't find many other places. Clearly I can't speak to the actual taste of the bacon, but the bf was over the moon when I surprised him with this little treat. He devoured it over the next few days, and is probably jonesing for it again. I think if I actually ate meat and shopped for it regularly, I would choose Belmont Butchery for a few reasons: 1) Local 2) Intriguing offerings 3) Small shop size that's not intimidating for customers. They offer a small selection of cheeses as well, but it's clear that this is a meat-lover's paradise.

Yelp
This is one of the places that makes Richmond a city, vs. a small-town wanna-be. A butcher shop that practices the art of the carve, the zen of the plate, the perfection that is pork, the lusciousness of lamb, the sensuality of the sirloin. Granted, this place would give a vegan the vapors. Omnivores, however, flock to this palace of meaty goodness knowing that what's here is prime, and the staff will help you select the absolutely perfect protein for your dinner table. If you entertain, this could easily become your Cathedral of Meat. Gorgeous sausages and other charcuterie loveliness in addition to clean (no hormones, no junk) meats from sustainable farms. Don't wait. Go see Tanya and her crew TODAY. You'll thank me.

Yelp
You don't know bacon until you try local bacon. This place is not cheap, so don't come here for everyday stuff, but come here if you have guests coming and you want their eyes to pop out. "Bacon for breakfast? Sure, try this, we get it at a place nearby." Their eyes will pop out, and they will never be happy with grocery store bacon again. Ditto any local sausage, or any other meat. There's just a world of difference.

Yelp
I love Belmont Butchery because the staff is friendly and eager to help, no matter how much (or little) you're buying. I end up here most frequently when I'm putting together cheese and meat plates (you'll find cured meats from Belmont Butchery on appetizer menus around town like at Bin 22). Sometimes I just go in and ask for two or three meats for two, and the staff always takes time to ask what I like, tell me about new arrivals and make sure I'm happy. My purchase only ends up being around $5-7, but I'm always happy with my delicious selections. I also love the cheeses owner Tanya Cauthen selects. There aren't a ton, but they all are good. The aged cheddar is one of my favorites in town. I recently picked up a smoked bleu cheese for the first time, and it too was great. Along with the meat, you'll also find a few wines by the bottle, condiments, fresh baguettes, crackers, etc. If you decide to have people over for drinks or a quick meal, you could pretty much run in here and get everything you need. I love this. The staff here also really knows their stuff. Tanya has studied different types of butchering all over the world. One of her staffers is a sausage expert. The meat may be a bit more expensive here, but it's worth every penny. And, as another reviewer noted, if you want to try something new but don't know what to do with it, they'll also tell you exactly how to cook it!

Yelp
Just walking past this place is difficult, it smells too good not to stop in to grab some sort of treat for myself or the family. The meat is always absolutely top quality [hangar steak is a personal favorite], and I've never been disappointed in the wine or cheese or other tidbits purchased here either.

Yelp
The neighborhood butcher you've always wanted. The name of the game is meat, people, and these guys (and gals) know their stuff. Belmont has amazing staff, and they are beyond knowledgable. Just tell them a little about what you're looking for, and they will point you in the right direction (usually with a delicious sample or two.) Their bourbon-maple bacon will literally change your life and will ruin all other bacon for you. It's that good. The same can be said about their salamis and sausages. It's all good. You can't go wrong in this place, you just can't. It's worth the extra trip from Church Hill.

Yelp
Today my wife and I were looking for a good all natural and locally sourced steak. We checked out E.T.s and F.M. in Carytown. On a whim and because of traffic we wandered into Belmont Butchery. What a pleasant experience. The gentleman who waited on us was outstanding, professional and offered a handshake after selling us the perfect Flat Iron steak. That steak came off my grill and was so tender and flavorful. I highly recommend this business to you. I will be a repeat customer. Thank you.

Yelp
I generally only ever go here to get offal. They always have a great selection of hearts. brains, sweetbreads, bone marrow, and testicles. The marrow bones are always just delicious and creamy, the tiny rabbit hearts were juicy and flavorful, perfect for a little mouthful. I grilled the sweetbreads and tossed them in butter, and they were to die for. Everything I got here was of incredible quality and cooked up perfectly. They also have a nice selection of local cheeses and fresh baked bread. The service is also really nice and super helpful.

Yelp
Exemplary service, unsurpassed quality and, without question, the steaks I buy from Belmont Butchery (I shop there once a month) are always the highlight of my weekly menu. There's steak, and then there's steak from Belmont Butchery (and yes there is a difference)!

Yelp
Wonderful little spot with a beautiful selection of meats and cheeses. It's a great place for those who have never had a real butcher experience and have questions about the meat they are buying.

Yelp
The service is fantastic and the meat and cheeses are great quality. Very knowledgeable and helpful. They also have a good variety of sauces, rubs, and cast iron.

Yelp
Lived in the Midwest all our lives and thought we knew good meat, but what we got at Belmont was FANTASTIC! As others have said, you get what you pay for - it's not going to be the cheapest place in town, but it's worth the investment.

Yelp
Oh man! Short review. Best sausage ever. Best Scrapple too. Just plain awesome. The sort of place we all forgot about when the Big (grocery) Box came to town.

Yelp
A friend generously gave us a $50 coupon from Belmont Butchery, the kind where the owner hand writes the amount on a card, etc.. When I went to redeem it they would not honor it because it had expired. As the owner said "I've already written that $50 off of my books." I beg your pardon; You wrote off the $50 you pocketed? I will never do business with Belmont again although I am a loyal supporter of local businesses. This kind of behavior that I would expect from a national chain but not from a local business.
