9 Hotels in the U.S. That Celebrate Women - AFAR

"This five-room inn in Owego honors Belva Lockwood, the first woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court and an early presidential candidate (1884 and 1888), by displaying photos and memorabilia throughout the property and placing a book about Lockwood in every room. Restored in 2019 by Julie and Ike Lovelass, the inn sells #BeLikeBelva merchandise and runs weekly lunch and dinner tours that teach guests about Lockwood’s advocacy for gender equality and her earlier work running a boarding school for young women." - Devorah Lev-Tov

My daughter and I stayed at the Belva Lockwood Inn from June 19 through 22nd. We had an amazing time! This was my second stay, and I enjoyed it even more than the first. ||The owner, Brie Woods, and her husband Matt are amazing hosts. They greet you when you arrive, give you a great tour of the home, and insist on carrying your bags to your room. ||Since this was Strawberry festival weekend, Brie and Matt hosted an open house on Friday and a parade watching party on Saturday on the gorgeous front porch. We really enjoyed chatting with other guests and people from the community||A big highlight of staying at the Belva are the amazing breakfasts home-made by Brie and delivered to your door in a picnic basket! They are as delicious as they are beautiful. ||I highly recommend staying at the Belva Lockwood Inn!

Best bed and breakfast I've ever been too. Absolutely gorgeous remodeled Victorian house with all modern amenities. But the breakfast part is what I loved most. We had coffee and tea and pancakes and eggs and fruit parfaits...all just for one breakfast! All delicious and homemade. The owners are so friendly and accommodating that it feels like a home away from home. Great location to downtown owego, it was the perfect place for strawberry fest. Can't recommend highly enough!!!

Our stay at Belva Lockwood Inn was wonderful. The owners, Brie and Matt were attentive and kind. They have created a warm and inviting environment. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The bathrooms modern. The architecture and history of the area fascinating. And breakfasts are delicious. Delivered either in the dining area or directly to your room. Owego is a quaint little town with cute shops and good restaurants. We also made a day trip to Ithaca and the amazing Finger Lakes wine country. So If you are looking for an adult only place to stay in Owego, we highly recommend the Belva Lockwood Bed and Breakfast.

All I can say is..wow. I don’t have the words to describe what a wonderful environment Brie and Matt have curated to give their guests an incredible experience all while honoring Belva Lockwood. Every little detail was thought through. Not only are the bedrooms adorable, cozy, with a great touch of history, Brie’s breakfast’s are OUT OF THIS WORLD! You get it delivered in a basket right to your door. Are you kidding me?!? And the food….holy moly. You can tell it’s homemade. Everything was delicious. They make sure you are taken care of in every regard. Matt was eager to help my mom and I unload our luggage even though it was sweltering. It was the strawberry festival the weekend we came, and they still found the time to clean our rooms while dealing with the hustle and bustle of the festival. I cannot recommend the Belva Lockwood Inn more. Be careful, because once you go to a B&B like this, you’ll never be satisfied with anything else! Thank you for everything Brie and Matt!

From a nespresso maker with great coffee to amazing home cooked delicious breakfasts, to help yourself well stocked beautiful bar, to beautifully appointed rooms, not a detail missed. Great location! We loved our stay so much and can’t wait to come back. Great place!

The place has so many historical stories attached to it. Couldn’t ask for any better hosts other than Brie and Matt. Each room has its own story to tell and very clean. The breakfasts were so delicious. Spent day about 45 minutes on finger lake at wineries. Would book another trip there for sure.

Staying in this lovely inn is like taking a step back in time, a meticulous example of vintage 1800s architecture. The owners are great hosts and the accommodations were perfect, especially the picnic basket breakfast. I only wish we could have stayed longer

Yelp
A delightfully charming B&B! Brie and Matt are thoughtful hosts and lovely people. A beautiful inn, tastefully decorated. Delicious breakfast, spacious room. Easy access off the highway, and short walk into town. A great spot to stop en route to Niagara Falls!

Yelp
The owners of the Belva Lockwood Inn have utterly mastered the art of hospitality. We were completely blown away at every turn of our stay! Their small town, country lifestyle, puts the big city "hospitality" to shame. By the time we checked out, I felt like they were my favorite aunt and uncle and I couldn't wait to visit again! When I initially called to book, I was considering booking two rooms so my kids (3 & 2) would have a bed to sleep in. Ike said he'd look around and see if one of the neighbors had a couple pack n' plays I could use so I wouldn't have to book the extra room. No one does that unless they care about people more than they care about money!! We ended up staying in the Gorman Suite and the kids had pack n' plays in the sitting room (which saved us a ton of money on our lodging). We felt so cared about! During our stay I had a mishap where my luggage fell over in the hallway and the handle made a gash in the paint. I was mortified. I showed them the damage and offered to pay for it. They waved it off and said it was no big deal. I tried insisting, but they wouldn't let me pay for it. Throughout my stay they were super helpful at recommending places to visit and places to eat. They ended up recommending MJ's Bar and Restaurant down the road. We got their chicken noodle soup, their clam chowder, and some grilled bread for dipping. It was beyond heavenly. There was love in every bite! The last night of our stay at the Inn, we told them we were going to be checking out super early the next morning and they offered to bring our breakfast early and have it in a to-go bag so we could eat it on the road. Once again, their thoughtfulness totally blew me away! I just can't say enough good things about them. As for the house itself, its located across the street from the Susquehanna River and is absolutely gorgeous! I loved learning about it's rich 150 year history from the booklet in our room, the pictures around the house, and the owners themselves. This was by far one of the nicest places we've ever stayed at! This Inn is hidden gem and a MUST-STAY if you're traveling to or through southern New York! We give the Belva Lockwood Inn 5/5 stars!

Yelp
It is hard to say which is more astounding...the beautiful accommodations or the phenomenal hospitality. Perfect for a night away or the week long stay... and so close to all that Owego has to offer!

Yelp
Reserved the inn for a friends special birthday. The decor, food, service, and staff all exemplary. It was the perfect place filled with warmth, style, and a touch of history. We could not have been more comfortable or felt more at home. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Wonderful place for a special occasion, whether a small gathering, shower, birthday, or romantic overnight. Beautifully restored with impeccable and unique furnishings. Very spacious rooms, all with private baths and complete with all necessities. Great food and bar as well! Highly recommend.

Yelp
A fabulous, historic, restoration of Belva Lockwood's home. She was the 1st woman to run for President twice in the late 1800's. The freshly renovated beautiful Inn overlooks the river on a street of gorgeous stately old homes. Within a few steps, you'll find quaint downtown Owego, NY. Lots of cute shops and restaurants overlooking the river. You are in the heart of the NY Finger Lake Region, a casino and a short drive from Ithaca, NY. Julie and Ike are wonderful Inn Keepers who make you feel right at home. During our stay to visit family in Owego, they graciously allowed us host our family for evening cocktails and snacks. We loved the huge wrap around deck with comfy furnishings, the beautiful living room and large eating area and bar. Every morning they have breakfast ready at your door in an old fashion picnic basket filled with homemade scones, muffins, fresh fruit and yogurt. Plus. thermos of coffee. They invite you to enjoy many amenities throughout the home, including a huge honor bar made out of an old piano. We loved everything about our unique room. High ceilings, a view of the river, overstuffed chairs, a desk and many interesting photos and other items. A lovely decor. We can't wait to visit our family and stay at the Inn again. Bev & Dick H.
