Very cool place! I found the Bemis through fellow Yelper Scott B, AKA the Barcode Artist. Very cool stuff.
I needed a dose of art to counteract the nuttiness of househunting, so I zipped in to preview the exhibits before the auction TONIGHT and was greeted by one of the artists who was busy installing for the big show. Artist Joel "Mighty" Darien took the time to sign me up for a membership and the auction. He was one of several pleasant and approachable people who were working there. In a little side gallery, I ran into Rachel Ziegler, the managing director and chatted for a bit about the residency program. The Bemis has 6 month residencies that include room, utilities, and a stipend for artists from all over the country and around the world. While looking at the Chihuly glass piece in the auction gallery, I happened to meet the chief curator, Mark Masuoka, who was very welcoming, too.
The works in the exhiblits were extremely varied and interesting. I developed a crush with a metal sculpture, who knows where that will lead? I left feeling peaceful and relaxed and looking forward to the auction with dinner and drinks tonight.
