The Essential Jewish Delis in Philly | Eater Philly

"Be prepared to wait in line for a table at Huntingdon Valley’s busy Ben & Irv’s. Back in the day, the deli operated in Mt. Airy when the neighborhood was home to a large Jewish population in the 1950s. Now in the ’burbs, it still serves a massive menu of deli favorites like blintzes, knishes, turkey clubs, corned beef specials, and smoked fish to hungry crowds." - Sarah Maiellano

Food is delicious and portions are huge! I got a cheeseburger and it was delicious and made to order. This was an everything bagel with lox and cream cheese. It was a monster!

We just ordered from here through uber eats because it said they had chicken and rice soup and my husband is sick and wanted chicken and rice soup. 20 minutes after placing the order I had a voicemail telling me that they didn’t have the chicken and rice soup. I tried calling the number back but couldn’t because it was a grub hub number so I called the number directly and was told they had already replaced it with chicken noodle. Not what we wanted but what choice did we have? We got the order and it was supposed to be chicken and rice soup, matzah ball soup, and blintzes. It was 2 containers of chicken noodle soup, neither of which had any chicken in it, so they were just noodles and carrots in broth, a container of matzoh balls, and a container of blintzes. The blintzes were greasy and lukewarm, the crepes were very thick and had a very unpleasant texture, not at all what I’m used to for blintzes. I couldn’t eat them. My husband tried a bite and didn’t like them either. He didn’t like the soup at all. He said it was just soggy noodles in broth. The whole meal was an overpriced fail. It was incredibly disappointing. I would have ordered from pumpernicks if I had known that they didn’t have the chicken and rice soup they claimed to have.

Been awhile since we've been here. Seated promptly. Menu prices are on the higher end compared to other similar restaurants in the area. BLT had very riped tomatoes, which made the sandwich good. The Monti Christo was ok. Honestly, the pickels were the best out of the whole meal, and they were free! 👍

Google
Great Deli with so many options. We ordered take out at lunch time. The restaurant was crowded . Took 15 minutes. Got a 23c. Roast beef club with Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing on Rye bread. Sandwich was HUGE, served with a new pickle and small bag of chips. Roast beef was lean, cooked perfectly and sliced thinly. So many items to choose from in the deli cases with salads and Desserts. Gluten free options. Located in a shopping mall with plenty of Parking.

Google
I can’t complain about the food, but I do not suggest ever getting delivery from here unless you want to wait for hours. I placed a lunch order (I usually do pickup but am sick so was being courteous to not get others sick) for delivery and wasn’t given any warning about abnormal wait times. At the hour mark I called and was told the food would be out in 15 minutes. At the two hour mark I was told it would be out in 5-10 minutes at which point I cancelled the order. There wasn’t an apology just a “ok I’ll cancel.” I guess they don’t care about customer retention.

Google
Ben&Irv's is unassuming at the door, ambiguous as you step into its counter and deli. And ABSOLUTELY phenomenal when you sit to eat. Our waitresses were very friendly and tagged teamed our needs until the end of two very scrumptious sandwiches (the Stack and a closed Reuben) and the delightful pickled plate and tea that was kept topped off. It's worth the 26 mile round trip we made.

Google
Table of 4, 2 ordered soup and both were good and served pretty hot, never hot enough. Sandwiches were all tasty, onion rings great as always. The price for a small container of schnecken was over $20, a bit too much.

Yelp
Its so hard to find a good jewish deli! This one is amazing! Ive had many of their offerings and they have all been fantastic! The only thing not fantastic is the prices. They are definitely in the high side so not fir anyone who is on a budget.

Yelp
We decided to go to this restaurant on a Sunday. My son is a foodie and likes to try different foods and restaurants. This was our first time at this restaurant. There was a line before being seated. Our wait was like 20 minutes. Not long at all. We were seated and menus given. Our waitress was very nice. This restaurant is busy with patrons. I ordered a mushroom barley soup, it tasted good. Soon after our food arrived. My son ordered Ruben Rachel , and I ordered BLT. My son enjoyed his meal and so did I. On my way out to pay I noticed the other patrons had pickles. I approached our waitress and I said I didn't know we could ask for pickles. Our waitress, I'm sorry. I said next time. Soon after we were leaving , the kind waitress gave me a jar of pickled tomatoes and she said it was on her. That was so kind of her. She made my visit to Ben and Irv so much more memorable.

Yelp
Pains me to not give 5 stars and was generous with 3 stars. I mean Ben and Irv's has been our go to place for trays, deli, brunch, breakfast, lunch, etc. forever, and ever. Over the holidays we ordered 2 trays for two different occasions. They are pricy and look nice but both trays were not as good as we remember. Too much mayo on the potato salad, bread was not fresh, forget the pastrami altogether as it was more fat than meat.. quite disgusting. Our first tray was the salad trio...that was better than the deli tray. However, the salads were bland in flavor...and the breads did not taste fresh with that either. I was sorry I ordered the deli tray as it was not a "wow" for our new years eve party. Several guest suggested we call Ben and Irv's to let them know the pastrami was a pile of fat. Pretty sad to hear that from your guest...especially since we paid attention to every detail making a perfect night for our party. We called the next day and we did get to swap out for corn beef. Didn't help us for the party but appreciated the swap. We now need a new place to get our trays as we don't want underwhelming food and bread that tasted like day old bread anymore. After all the bread can make or break a sandwich.

Yelp
This Jewish deli and restaurant has a very expansive menu. About 13 pages of menu that ranges from breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. It was crowded on a Sunday morning. At the entrance, you find the cashier register, display of rugelach, dessert, smoked fish. The dining area is on the left, mostly booths. Our waitress was attentive and kept on checking our table. A small plate of pickles was served on the table right away. The pickles consisted of two different kinds of small cucumbers. One kind is more pickled, the other kind that I tried looked more of a cucumber, very crunchy and juicy. I picked salmon with plum and sesame entree that came with 2 veggies and a soup or salad. The waitress told me a long list of veggie choices that I couldn't remember all of them. I chose broccoli and carrot. Salmon was decent, the sauce was a bit sweeter than I expected with about 3 slices of canned mandarin. I barely tasted the sesame. The baby carrots also had sweet sauce on it. We asked for challah bread. The waitress gave us a couple thin slices of challah and rye bread. Challah was very soft and fresh. French fries was crispy and seemed like it was not frozen.

Yelp
This deli is a favorite dinner stop wherever I'm in Philadelphia. Tonight I tried a variation on a ruebin sandwich. Besides the corned beef, sauerkraut and Russian dressing this one included beef brisket too. It was quite good and filling. Our server was very efficient in checking on me throughout the meal. If you didn't have room for dessert there is plenty to take out by the registers when you pay your che

Yelp
Great Jewish deli. Good food and good service. I had the hot pastrami. It was delicious.

Yelp
One of the best places where we order breakfast to go! The service is always top notch and the food is great! If you live in the area and looking for a great diner to get a meal - definitely don't pass by. PS. They have amazing baked goods on display. Hard to leave without one..

Yelp
I arrived five minutes before my dining partner did. There were NO people waiting to sit and TONS of empty tables in the dining room. When the host became aware that my party was not complete, he refused to seat me and rather had me wait in the deli portion of the store. I asked why I couldn't sit and he rudely asked me have you ever worked in the industry?? It''s out of respect to the servers!! I HAVE worked in the industry. I would never speak to a customer the way you spoke to me. I can see if the tables were filled, and you had a line of people waiting to be seated, but there was a full 30% of the tables empty and no one in line. You want me to respect the servers? I do by being kind and tipping well. How about you respect customers who come to spend their hard earned money for your barely adequate food?!?

Yelp
Delicious food in a large menu. Friendly staff that's very helpful. Don't forget to ask for their free pickles.

Yelp
I been coming here for years but something has changed the kitchen is run by all Mexicans not that it's the problem but could be I ate 2weeks in a row there I orderd pastrami Ruben both times I got sick pains in my stomach and running to bathroom all night these sandwiches are almost 20 dollars you don't expect to get sick the owners I guess would rather greet people instead of watching people in kitchen are washing their hands and making things right this is a slilent killer to most businesses when they stop watching what's going on in the kitchen!!!!! Be careful here

Yelp
Absolutely hands down amazing Jewish Deli. They even include a deli menu to have your sliced meats ready to go after you eat in the restaurant. So very clean and attentive by all staff down to the host, the check out lady and my service. Be aware that Rueben's are served open face to tell the server you want it as a sandwich. Phenomenal food 100%.

Yelp
My wife and I conducted a blind rye bread tasting. Five ryes competed for bragging rights. How does one conduct a "blind" tasting. My wife took a slice of bread from each deli and numbered them 1-5. Only my wife was aware of the mapping of the deli to the numbers. I then returned to the room and my wife stepped away. I made the sandwiches and then converted the numbers to letters. #1 becomes letter C, #2 becomes letter A, etc. The mapping of numbers to letters was only known by me. Below are the results in order of worst to best. #5 Original South Philly Jewish Rye (available at Giant Food Markets) cost $6 for a full loaf. This was our least favorite. No flavor and the texture was completely off. The bread was very dry, almost stale. If you are short on time (and money), this will work but my recommendation is head to a deli and get some real NY Jewish Rye. #4 Ben & Irv's Deli in Southamptom cost $5.50 for a half loaf. The texture gets us closer to a true deli rye bread but still dry and light on flavor. #3 Moish and Itzy's in Newtown cost $6.00 for a half loaf. The crust is chewy as it should be and tasted great. The inside is a bit on the dry side. This was just a hair behind the #2 spot. Candidly I would rank this higher but my wife found the dryness unacceptable and I never win an argument with her. #2 Borscht Belt in Newtown cost $10 for a half loaf. This is a softer texture if that is your thing. My wife liked the texture but I like a chewier crust and heartier bread. I don't know that this bread will hold up to a mound of meat or wet toppings. The flavor was terrific. If you don't mind spending $10 for a half loaf of bread, then give it a try. I'm saving for retirement so probably won't return anytime soon. #1 [Top Spot] Manny's Famous Deli in Holland cost $4.50 for a half loaf. Winner winner chicken dinner. This is the fan favorite and a must try for anyone that values a good bread. Manny's offers the gold standard of ryes and at a price that leaves enough money to also buy a deli pickle. Let us know if you would like us to assess another favorite food. Even better, are you convinced you have a favorite? Put your conviction to the test and conduct a blind tasting of your own.

Yelp
When I was a kid my parents jokingly told me "Never eat anything bigger than your head" - well glad we didn't come here when I was young! This is a typical New York City-type deli where one sandwich is bigger than the next. Looking around at other tables it was almost funny to see the size of all the different offerings. The menu is also gigantic running from Breakfast thru Lunch items. The Corned Beef Special was very large as well as very good. The Reuben, served open faced, was gigantic (although not very photogenic!) and delicious. There was enough to bring home half of each. Delicious Pickles were served along side the sandwiches. We got one of the last tables on a Monday at around 12:30. If you want to take home additional items, when you're seated there is a 1 page checkoff list to give to your server so that when you go to the cashier your take home order is ready to go. Fun - lively place.

Yelp
4.5 stars. This was our first time out here and it was great. I ordered a massive pastrami and Swiss, which was delicious. Bonus points for including a second layer of cheese in the middle. My wife got the stack-- corned beef and pastrami piled high with cole slaw, Russian dressing and served on latkes. Also a huge dish-- we both have healthy appetites and we brought him more than enough for dinner. Service was fantastic. Everyone was so friendly. Minus half a star for some pretty bland matzoh ball soup that was rather oddly served with noodles.

Yelp
Longstanding Jewish Deli Staple. One of the few places that have been around since my childhood and still has some great quality Jewish fixings. Some of my favorite items from here are the Matzo Ball Soup with noodles, Jumbo whitefish on a bagel, Lox on a bagel, and of course Smoked Salmon on a Bagel (If you have not tried Smoked Salmon on a bagel you have truly never lived). Came here with the Girlfriend Saturday morning and ordered an omelet with sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions, peppers. This dish comes with fried hash browns and choice of bread, highly recommend rye bread as I believe it is a very overlooked bread to make egg sandwiches in the morning and other great deli meats to build your sandwich on. Do not expect a five star upscale dining experience but rather a diner that knows how to make a dam fine breakfast and has quality Jewish pickles. They also have desserts to go that are nothing to balk at. I can recommend the chocolate chip muffins, they been making them for decades and still haven't gone downhill in flavor or yumminess. As always people SYOY!!!

Yelp
Overall, we were pretty impressed with this deli. The menu is very daunting, and my biggest drawback to visiting over other delis. The veggie omelette was very good, and the pumpernickel bagel was a great addition. Friendly service and could see returning to try lunch or dinner while I'm visiting the area.

Yelp
We have a new winner. Receiving the award for the worst cup of coffee Ben & Irv's. This is the epitome of recycling. I think our coffee is old dishwater. So sad! Great sandwiches however.

Anna G.

Yelp
I am coming to this place for many years, was very happy, but yesterday I was very disappointed, they messed up my order to pick up, instead sandwich, they put soup in the bag, when I saw it at home, it was too late, they were closed, next day I came, they looked at me, like I did something wrong, they didn't want to give me money back, they write my name in the book and said its store credit, no tax refund either; but the most important, nobody apologized, look like I did something wrong and I have no proof about this credit on my hand, very bad customer service

Yelp
Yum! I love this Jewish deli! Corn beef special so good! Fresh pickles! Waitress Elizabeth was wonderful and attentive! Always a great experience!

Yelp
The food is amazing, I always stop in here to eat when Im in this area. The Jewish corned beef has unbelievable flavor, the cabbage borscht soup is very flavorful and served hot. This is what I tried the first time eating there, every selection I have tried since is addictive! I don't quite know what it is, they have some special knack for the way they prepare and cook the food ! If your in this area , please do yourself a favor and stop in there and try one their selections, you will absolutely Not be disappointed . The portions are a good size, the prices are very reasonable, and food is fresh, service in there is excellent and the business is clean and well organized.

Yelp
Great food and plenty of it.I've had their breakfast and it was delicious and they don't skimp, the coffee puts the diners and Starbucks to shame

Yelp
Holy wide selection, Batman! This place truly has something for everyone: vegetarian, low carb, high carb, carnivore--they've got you covered! No part of the menu embodies this better than the omelette selection. If you're craving a particular kind of omelette, you will probably find it here. Additional shout-out to the coleslaw, which is truly delicious: the right blend of crisp, creamy, and acidic tempered with a hint of sweetness all come together to make an absolutely delicious bite. You'll want at least a double order. All of the veggies in my dinner were fresh, from the peppers, onions, and mushrooms in the omelette to the lettuce (SO crisp) and tomatoes that came with it.
google avatar

Iris A.

Yelp
I tried this place after realizing the chicken I purchased and planned to cook was spoiled and so not able to be used . They took my order and filled it correctly. I thought it was odd that when I called and said I wanted a Shabbat dinner- the person who answered the phone had no clue as to what I was referring to. So much for a Jewish deli. I will say that the cherry and blueberry finishes were fabulous and brought me back to my Childhood days on the boardwalk in the Rockaways in Queens, NY .

JP J.

Yelp
Not the NY experience for fresh hot steamed pastrami and corned beef, but knishes were good. Service was good. NY Deli ambiance.
google avatar

Rupert Y.

Yelp
I love the old school feel of the deli counter and a guy cutting fresh fish. The restaurant feels very cramped and outdated. My personal experience is moody waitresses trying to avoid the table and basically tossing the food onto the table. My least favorite part of the experience by far is the rude woman behind the register. It's clear she's part of the ownership family but how about a thank you or a kind word to a paying customer. The food is decent but feels overpriced and overrated. If you wanna visit a place where you feel like you're an annoyance then this is your spot for sure. A little less attitude and a lot more thank you!

Eric S.

Yelp
This place is the real deal! All homemade and authentic food with a huge extensive menu. Ownership has not changed, not certain why some peoples state in their review that it's under new ownership. It's not. They are happily celebrating their 70th year in business! That's astounding for a restaurant in general! Kudos to everything you're doing! Best Food and service of any deli/restaurant I've ever been to. New York style and tons to take home for the next day!

Yelp
Service is always friendly. The menu and portions are huge. We've always enjoyed what we've ordered. Have had breakfast and lunch. They offer pickles for the table, very delicious, but the last time we had to ask for them. We usually grab some cookies on the way out

Yelp
Horrible service. My wife ordered a platter for pickup yesterday and had me pick it up. When I got there, the lady at the register asked for the name. I gave her the name, phone number and order number. She gave me an order and I paid for it. (Since my wife ordered it, I did not know what she ordered). I got home and saw that they gave me the wrong order. We called and told them about it and at first was told that we had to wait for a manager to return to resolve. We stated that we would return and exchange and get the correct order. When I got there, I was ACCUSED by the same person who gave me the wrong order of not giving her the proper information. When I told her that I did give name, phone number and order #, she called me a liar. When I confronted her about this, she said "Whatever" and turned her back on me. We have been coming there for over 20 year and used them for two Shivas in the past year, and never had this kind of treatment. I will never go there again due to this extremely rude person (My wife thinks that she might be part of the owner's family) . I hope that the person at the register is happy that they lost a loyal customer due to her customer service.

Yelp
We have always loved this place but today hit differently. We have the stomach flu and cant keep food down. All I wanted was Jewish Penicillin. We never order soups. Esp matzo ball soups are holy for me as no one can recreate how my grandma made it. We ordered two soups via Doordash. I tasted it and began to cry. If I close my eyes, it tastes just like childhood! The bullion is just right. The matzo balls are absorbed in the spices and broth. No other place can achieve that. Thank you guys so much!

Louis H.

Yelp
Love their brunches. Bagels and lox and kippered salmon. Very crowded on weekends.

Yelp
Wonderful food and excellent soups. Been going there forever. My Mom always loved eating there especially the chopped liver one of my favorites and hers! Fabulous place to eat

A bit noisy but the food does not disappoint. Great waitress and more than enough servings. Good home made food

Yelp
Outstanding Jewish deli/diner that would be five stars if not for how expensive their food is. I've never had a bad experience here, and my husband is obsessed with "The Stack", which is pastrami and corned beef piled on top of a potato pancake. It's as decadent as it sounds and very tasty. I usually get corned beef dishes and they have not disappointed yet. The menu is extensive and there must be something for everybody here. They also have a large takeout counter when you walk in, and tons of interesting items to buy. Once again, my only complaint is the price, but for what it's worth they do give you huge portions. I really like this place.

Yelp
Ben and Irv's is a Jewish restaurant/deli/ bakery that has been around for decades. I've been there a few times and have yet to be disappointed. I had a Groupon for $17 that's worth $30 dollars worth of food that was about to expire so I went to use it. Ben and Irv's is located on a strip mall on County Line road in Huntington Valley. When you enter there is a bakery, deli that you can get fresh meats and salads, and takeout orders. To the left is the dinning room. We were seated right away. Even though it was very busy, everyone worked like a well oiled machine. Our waitress was very pleasant, patient and helpful. Giving us time to decide what to get. Their menu is pretty large, with choices for all appetites. They always put a assortment of pickles on the table to nibble on. We wanted breakfast food, so my husband decided on a all meat omelet with hashbrowns, scrapple, toast and coffee. I wanted to try the seafood omelet, french toast and coffee. The portions are large, and the coffee keeps coming! The service was great, prices right, and would definitely would go back.

Yelp
Great food....just like I remember growing up in Brooklyn. Thank you for the heaping portions! Loved it!

Yelp
I'm tired of the attitude and the way you're treated by some managers or owners (pretty sure it was not just a cashier employee) of the restaurant. I ordered loaves of rye bread for Christmas. We picked them up Christmas Eve as and the order was waiting as planned so no problem with that. However, the older, blonde woman at the checkout register was so rude that it was really off-putting. She did no speak at all or smile. After we paid, we said "Happy Holidays." to her and got no response. She just sat there looking miserable and ignored us. She was not doing us a favor by waiting on us and that was her attitude. We're giving them our business and by doing so they are able to stay in business. If you can't bring yourself to smile or say "Thanks for coming in and Happy Holidays." or even just "Thanks for coming in.", then maybe you could look at your customers and eke out a half-hearted "Thanks". That's the bare minimum and you should at least be able to say that. If you're so miserable that you can't even do that, then don't work there anymore, and instead do something else with your life that makes you happy. I won't be going to Ben & Irv's again. The owners/managers/staff need to not be rude and at least say thanks or acknowledge me in some way. If you don't appreciate my business then you don't get it anymore. I'm over it.

Yelp
I've been coming here my entire adult life, and my partner knows it. This morning on a nice bagel I had the second half of the whitefish salad she brought me home for a present, and she asked me how it was. Having just bit into the third crunchy gob of something that shouldn't be in there, I said, "I think I'm past my 40-year whitefish phase." "Really? How come?" I said, "Can I answer with a question? Were they nice when you picked this up?" She furrowed her brow, treading cautiously, aware of my decades of raving about the place. "No," she said thoughtfully. She went on to explain the exact treatment that's been bothering me for years now, and that you've likely experienced if you've ever gone in. Rude disinterest. Miserable people acting like they're doing you a favor. The pickles are very good. The food is sometimes amazing. But sometimes it's mediocre. It's always plated as if by a 3rd grader. The staff never smiles, ever, as if they have some information and are inconvenienced by your desire to learn it. I've never written a bad review of anything, ever, but I am now because I've come to realize no, they don't know anything worth being miserable about. They're all just stuck in a lousy work environment. I feel like I'm awakening from being in a religious cult, but I'm 61 and it's about damn time to head to Manny's.

Not as good as the five stars claim but not nearly as bad as the one stars allege. Most of the food is average tasting. All of it is expensive but that should be expected for 19006. Slow, cranky employees. Traffic on the nearby roads moves very slowly even when it is not rush hour.

Yelp
All the traditional Jewish deli foods, soups, & appetizers are here & reminds us what's so good about a good Jewish deli! - matzo ball, mushroom barley, Sweet & sour cabbage (with or w/o boiled soup meat!), & my favorite, split pea (with garlic croutons!) The cuts if corned beef, pastrami, jewish salami, & tongue are par with New York's Carnegie or 2nd Street Delies. The sizes are GINORMOUS as well! Appetizers from gefilte fish to amazing onion rings are all here as well as full dinners with entrees only or Complete dinners from soup, salad, dessert & drinks or coffee, with specials everyday for lunch & dinner. Be warned!! The menu is huge! and not for the faint of heart...!

Yelp
Well thanksgiving came around again and no invites, no guests. Just my wife and I so a 7 pound breast or a whole Turkey was too much. We got 1.5 lbs of Turkey that came with stuffing and delicious gravey from Ben and Irvs and I made mashed potato's and crescent rolls and bought KFC cole slaw (the only thing worth eating there tbh) made a salad and some veg. The Ben and Irvs ordering by phone and pick up was flawless. The person on the phone knew what was available and what they could and couldn't do and handled the card on the phone efficiently and in a friendly fashion. The pick up people were helpful and pleasant and the food! OMG it's hard to imagine better. Really they made it so easy for a quite reasonable price with excellent quality and we had thanksgiving and a leftovers meal with minimal muss and fuss. Oh BTW they do deli too

Yelp
Have you ever watched the guy behind the deli counter slice lox with a salmon knife so old that it's little more than a half inch wide? No? I have and it's amazing. The guy that worked at Jacks Deli forever made it an art form. Paper thin slices perfectly laid out on butcher paper and wrapped. Perfect. This you will not find at Ben & Irvs. In fact when I asked for really thin lox, he held up pre sliced globs of fish which I have no idea when it was cut and it looked like it was cut with a hacksaw. The 2 corned beef specials were really good though as was the bread, bagels and whitefish salad. But I seriously wish they'd go back to butcher paper for the sandwiches instead those plastic containers. If you really need to cut cost corners get rid of the plastic, go back to a roll of butcher paper and hire an experienced person to fresh cut lox.

Yelp
My family has frequented this place for many years. We had a large gathering today for a special event & they were beyond accommodating. The food is always delicious & plentiful. Special thanks to Lynn & Chelsea for being so sweet & attentive l. Also many thanks to the manager (sorry I didn't get your name) for helping us handle my Mom's wheelchair situation. Thank you!

Yelp
Pretty good place for Jewish Deli. Good food and service. Usually crowded, which is a good sign.
